Obama Speaks Out on Powell Endorsement (Updated re George Will)

posted by Ari Melber on 10/19/2008 @ 1:53pm

Barack Obama welcomed the endorsement of Colin Powell at a North Carolina rally on Sunday, linking the decorated veteran to soldiers serving today.

"With so many brave men and women from Fayetteville serving in our military, this is a city and a state that knows something about great soldiers," he told the crowd, according to remarks released by the campaign. "And this morning, a great soldier, a great statesman, and a great American has endorsed our campaign to change America. I have been honored to have the benefit of his wisdom and counsel from time to time over the last few years, but today, I am beyond honored and deeply humbled to have the support of General Colin Powell," said Obama.

Obama benefited from some of Powell's wisdom on Sunday morning, when the two spoke for about ten minutes. Robert Gibbs, a senior aide to the senator, said Obama told Powell that "he looked forward to taking advantage of his advice in the next two weeks and hopefully over the next four years."

At the rally, Obama also cited Powell's leadership as an inspiration for a spirit of service and community that transcends old divisions -- which Powell discussed as one of Obama's strengths during his Meet The Press endorsement.

"General Powell has defended this nation bravely, and he has embodied our highest ideals through his long and distinguished public service. He and his wife Alma have inspired millions of young people to serve their communities and their country through their tireless commitment and trailblazing American story," said Obama. "And he knows, as we do, that this is a moment where we all need to come together as one nation – young and old, rich and poor, black and white, Republican and Democrat."

UPDATE: I must add that it is truly saddening to see some conservatives respond to Gen. Powell's endorsement by impugning his decision with baseless personal attacks, or recklessly suggesting that race helps Obama's campaign, instead of responding to the Powell news for what it is -- the bombshell of a former senior Bush national security official endorsing the opposing party's nominee. (For more, see Sam Stein's report that Rush Limbaugh and George Will took those tacks on Sunday.)

Now Powell's endorsement may get Mr. Will thinking about "race," but thankfully most of the American public sees Powell differently, on the merits, as a decorated military leader and statesman. As I wrote on Friday, Powell remains the most respected person ever to serve in the unpopular Bush administration. That is precisely because most people assess his views and character based on his record. Other major national security figures in Bush's cabinet, from Don Rumsfeld to Condi Rice, have unfavorable ratings that quadruple Powell's. Yes, voters can tell Rice and Powell apart, even though they are both Republican secretaries of state who happen to be black. By the logic of Limbaugh and Will, however, that Rice endorsement should be just around the corner.

Finally, for further reading: I assessed the role of Powell, Rice and Obama in our segregated power structure in this Nation essay. It's long, but it explores the way some observers, like Will, misunderstand the challenges facing racial minorities in politics and government.

  2. I wonder how the glue sniffing crew is going to spin this one. I bet that Michele Bachmann is going to snort a large tube of gorilla glue and claim that Collin has spent a lot of time in the middle east without his pass port and should be deported immediately, after being water boarded. Old drunken Joe McCarthy would be proud of Michele Bachmann.

They are using the "race rationale" for the Powell endorsement to try to try to diminish it. They obviously didn't watch the Meet The Press segment where Powell made the endorsement, as Powell left little doubt that it was the Republican Party moving hard right to the Bircher lunatic fringe that left him no choice but to endorse Obama.

Powell also thought McCain was clueless on the economy and showed poor judgment for selecting Palin as his VP since she is obviously not prepared to step in as president should the occasion arise.

And, finally, Powell cited the tone of the McCain campaign and its effort to smear Obama with a person who was part of a terrorist organization 50 years ago but who is now a tenured professor at the University of Illinois, and their campaign's inability to acknowledge that being an Arab or a Muslim doesn't disqualify one from being President of the United States, even though Obama is obviously a non-Arab and a Christian.

"...that it was the Republican Party moving hard right to the Bircher lunatic fringe..."

IMHO, Mett... the GOP hasn't moved anywhere...

GWBush simply gave them free reign to 'experiment' with their policies left unadulterated... on the American populace.

It was a disaster... as it was originally a polar response to it's 'better half'... but... after gaining all the hubris that power, weapons, and money could buy, they destroyed the only duality that could give the neo-cons 'meaning'... in a sense cutting off the hand that gave them a quasi legitimacy... thus more or less insuring that they would go off the 'deep end'.

    That's what fascists do.

...which is why fascism is generally considered 'short lived' and violent...

"'Cause if you're talkin' 'bout destruction...

  8. We are at war and everyone should question whether Obama has the integrity and ability to lead this nation at this time. And, would he keep this country safe, or will his affiliations with radicals/terrorist lead to more devastation? In my opinion, I don't believe he has what it takes. Let me explain another connection to a radical/terrorist. In 2006, Obama campaigned for a relative in Kenya, who was running for the Presidency. Obama's cousins name is Raila Odinga. Subsequently, Odinga lost by 230,000 or so votes. He did not accept the loss. So he called for demonstrations by his political supporters who in turn committed ethnic cleansing and genocide. Point blank, this guy tried to subvert the election process and use blackmail until he got what he wanted. Here is a video that gives a good accounting of the events along with photo's as proof of Obama and Odinga campaigning together. And Obama, used U.S. taxpayer money for this and his Senatorial position to help this terrorist. did you know that mccain, in the 80's, served on the BOARD OF DIRECTORS of the american chapter of WACL (world anti-communist league), a group whose membership consisted of ww2 nazis, neo-nazis, anti-semites, and latin american death squads?

or that his running mate was associated with a heavily armed rightwing seccesionist militia that masquerades as a legitimate political party (AIP - alaska independence party)? that this organization shares ideology with other such notorious groups and individuals as the OKLAHOMA CITY BOMBERS? that it openly suggests insinuating sleeper candidates into the republican party?

"Liddy's connections to John McCain In 1998 Liddy hosted a fundraiser at his house for John McCain's re-election campaign at which guests could have their pictures taken with McCain and Liddy.[6] Over the years, Liddy, who has referred to McCain as "an old friend," has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator's campaigns -- including $1,000 in 2008. When David Letterman asked McCain about his relationship with Liddy, McCain said, "I know Gordon Liddy. He paid his debt. He went to prison and paid his debt, as people do. I'm not in any way embarrassed to know Gordon Liddy."[7]"

  33. I don't think George Will meant at all what he's being accused of saying here. At least, I didn't interpret the video clip that way. I thought Will was speculating on the mentality of certain segments of the American electorate, and the effect Colin Powell's comments might have on them - he was not attributing racial motives to Powell himself.

George Will showed great integrity and courage in being one of the first prominent conservatives to break ranks and denounce McCain bluntly as unfit to be President. (I'm referring to Will's article "McCain loses his head.") We ought to be rolling out the blue carpet for him, not hastily interpreting his words to mean the worst thing possible. I'm sure he's getting plenty of punches below the belt from his own side, just as Christopher Buckley and Kathleen Parker are; he doesn't need any more from the Left.

  42. Factual sources for information about Obama, his trip to Kenya, Odinga: http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/kenya.asp

Factcheck.org refers to numerous reports by reputable news sources in this report on Corsi's inaccurate book about Obama (alleges the same false claims of Obama & Odinga) http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/corsis_dull_hatchet.html

Using the following "sources" for your information is unsound, they only support your already extremely biased & dangerous views. Just because a website exists does not make it Truth or Fact. "youtube" - video sharing website allows public posting of all manner of videos (does not view or check for accuracy or legality before going online); not a news source "ztruth.com" - a personal blog, not a news source "obamatruth.org" - scathingly biased web site with questionable research methods and sources "zogby.com" - a pattern in Zogby polls that trend towards McCain in every announcement

It's your right as an American to believe in falsehoods and inaccurate information. To disseminate false information is also your right, to claim it's truth is pretty close to illegal. For others to believe your false information as truth is just plain moronic. Still, a right. Intelligence can't be legislated - we've all seen that with the troll-ish comments posted here. We get it - some people are racially motivated to hate Obama and will use thinly veiled code words like calling it fear for America because of "terrorist" connections or "socialism" to support your VERY Anti-American ideas. Unfortunately, this election has shown the truly disturbed nature of many Americans and has given uninformed people more "code words" for racism and hate. Avg numbers among 7 recognized polls show Obama 10.28 pts ahead. Not Zogby, though. Huh.

Powell's spotted record began with orchestrating the cover-up of the MyLai massacre on the ground in VN as PIO of the Americal Div, protecting colonels & generals. This brought him to Nixon's appreciative attention, and a slot in the Nixon White House as a Fellow.

For knowingly lying at the UN, thereby facilitating what he knew was an illegal war of aggression, Powell qualifies as a war criminal, all of his wiggling since the Iraq war flopped notwithstanding.

  48. So much for "support the troops." Hypocrite right-wingers only support the troops in the abstract, and as long as they keep their mouths shut.

  49. RE: Change the World

You can't change the world -well, except to make it worse- with $150 million a month.

  51. Sam Stein's story has now been updated; he has backed off from the claim that Will attributed Powell's endorsement to racial motives. Ari Melber should now update this story to reflect the change; I feel that an apology to George Will might also be in order.

The link on the home page of the Huffington Post now reads "Limbaugh, Buchanan: Powell Endorsed Obama Based On Race", and it now shows an image of Pat Buchanan instead of George Will. The title of the article has also been changed; it now reads "Some Conservatives See Race in Powell's Obama Endorsement". And the sentence commenting directly on Will's remarks now reads: "The esteemed conservative columnist George Will did not go so far, but he did seek to explain the impact of Powell's decision as part of a larger, more psychological sway that Obama held over other African Americans."

  52. It must be a real coup to get the endorsement of a man who was a key figure in leading this country into the reckless and dangerous quagmire of Iraq.

  53. I bet Obama is calling "W" right now for his endorsement.

    " ...Intelligence can't be legislated... "

This is not completely true. Though you can't suddenly impose 'intelligence' onto the citizenry at large... it is possible to create and support the conditions that encourage intellectual curiosity and conscientious consideration of the issues facing humanity.

This has been largely forgotten in our social discourse... of late, and needs to be brought back to the table for the welfare of this great nation.

It is far too easy for a government to 'lower the bar' intellectually... by tightening up the economy, turning the frustrations outwards towards wars of aggression, and polarizing the population around trivial side issues.

These tendencies can be quickly reversed... and reverse them we shall.

At this point... it will benefit everybody!

  56. >>>He is a very decent and honorable American who just holds views that are not compatible with the Republican party. I think he would be more comfortable as a Democrat.

This is the Republican problem - they are alienating all of the moderates, which pares the party down to the Bircher hard-right lunatic fringe that Palin represents.

Politics is about ADDITION, not subtraction, or breaking even.
