The national polls are instructive early in the fall presidential campaign season. They tell us whether a candidate has strength, momentum, a chance.
But as the campaign enters its final stage -- with election day less than a month away -- the numbers from the states start to matter. That's where the electoral votes start to pile up.
So what of the battleground states?
Forget about states, competitive or otherwise, that backed Democrat John Kerry in 2004. The latest polls from all of them favor Democrat Barack Obama this year. (Indeed, the analysts at Real Clear Politics have in recent days moved four 2004 states Kerry states that were supposed to be battlegrounds this year -- Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Pennsylvania -- from "Leans Obama" status to "Solid Obama.")
What of the states that backed Republican George Bush in 2004? Where are they trending.
Here's something to ponder: In 2004, Bush secured the presidency with the electoral votes of:
Colorado
Florida
Iowa
Missouri
Nevada
New Mexico
North Carolina
Ohio
Florida
As of today, the Real Clear Politics poll of polls for each state -- which averages all the recent surveys of voters -- has Obama winning every one of these battlegrounds.
If the election were held today, and if the polls proved correct, Obama would win the Electoral College by a margin of 364 votes to 174 -- a split roughly parallel to that in the 1996 race between Democrat Bill Clinton and Republican Bob Dole.
Clinton, it should be recalled, was generally seen as having secured an Electoral College landslide.

Bush 2004 States Are Tipping Over.
Posted by frosty zoom at 10/09/2008 @ 12:03am
This election has landslide written all over it. The badly wounded global economy is solidifying that fact.
Yet, it's this same cratering economy that is likely to turn the task of the new administration into a snake wrestling match --think giant anaconda. The silver lining is that it will likely transform our overseas occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan into untbearable burdens.
Looking back, I'm oddly thankful that John Kerry lost in 2004. Perhaps that was a bit of a godsend. I suspect we'll be needing several more of those godsends to see us through the next decade or more.
Best of luck to America, and the rest of the planet.
We're gonna be needing it.

My fellow friendly prisoners ----- between Diebold, a slough of very clever, effective, nasty voter suppression techniques, big corporate media - the worst sinner in all this ------ it's not over at all. Soon we may be hearing NBCLockheed, etc., droning on about McCain/Palin's late surge, comeback. 2000, 2004 were successful practice.

I'd hope that a looming landslide would open the floodgates for a large third party turnout. But I don't see the statistics for it yet.
I'll probably vote third party as at least a symbolic gesture to indicate my strong conviction that the entrenched two party system --it's not exactly a constitutional mandate is it?-- is a leading culprit for much of the trouble we've dug ourselves into.
Posted by b_kool_66 at 10/09/2008 @ 12:20am
If the WA election system wasn't so whacked I'd vote for Cynthia McKinney just to get the Greens more votes so they can register for future elections easier. Alas, I'm stuck with the sucky top two ballot. Oh well, at least the choices are stark.

Although it's not an entirely unlikely outcome, the chances of that at this point are pretty slim in my estimation.
Unexpected nightmare scenarios are certainly a dangerous possibility, but somehow I don't see the tide turning against the solidity of the image that Barack Obama and his astonishingly effective team have cast in the mind of the American electorate --that of a level headed and soundly deliberating figure. In short, a fair representation of who Obama really is.
Unfortunately, the times demand an innovator and a risk taker to at least some significant degree. This is my most serious reservation about Obama.
His track record is cautious, and frankly, too conservative for the needs of the moment.

That's for sure.
Starting with Obama & Afghanistan.
Afghanistan ... where no foreign army in history has ever got its way.
Where even the Brits now say, Cut a deal with the Taliban, and leave.
The Brits should know, they've been kicked out of there before.
But will the US MIC allow Obama to survive, if he attempts to actually command in the interests of the US people?
Will AIPAC allow it?
Or are the American people damned to defeat by their own military. And foreign interference.
Why not, it's happened in so many other countries, often with the foreign advice & assistance of the US military. If they can do it abroad, what's to stop them at home? that piece of paper called the Constitution that they've sworn to defend? Contrary to law, the US military has already begun positioning combat forces for combat duty within the US, starting with the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Div.
And how many US politicians have uttered a peep about this?
Think you'll hear it discussed in a debate?
Think a Congressional committee will summon Pentagon officials to do some explaining?
Keep thinking.

True. Things get primal in the days just before the big day. McCain's ads and speeches are employing "dangerous" a lot.
To show any sign of anything creative at this point is easily spun a la the Swiftboaters.
Possible, and that's all that matters -possible bad-something.

And hence progressive / liberal become pejorative.

8,000 boisterous supporters came to see both Sarah Palin and John McCain at Lehigh University and throughout Palin's remarks and introduction of her running mate the crowd chanted "NObama!" "Sarah!" and "Mac is Back!" But, as she neared the end of her remarks at least one member of the crowd got a little too rowdy and screamed, "You're a hottie!" Palin did not miss a beat and exclaimed, "Now what does that have to do with anything?"

Hockey Mom' Palin to Drop Flyers' First Puck Sarah Palin plans to drop the ceremonial first puck when the Philadelphia Flyers open the regular season Saturday.
AP Wednesday, October 08, 2008
0 23 Comments | Add Comment PHILADELPHIA -- Sarah Palin's next faceoff will come at center ice at an NHL arena, not at a debate.
The GOP vice presidential nominee will drop the ceremonial first puck when the Philadelphia Flyers open the regular season against the New York Rangers on Saturday. Palin, the Alaska governor and self-described "hockey mom," will join the winner of a team promotion for the "Ultimate Hockey Mom" to drop the puck.
Last month, Palin visited a Philadelphia bar with Flyers owner Ed Snider, who has donated money to Republican presidential nominee John McCain's campaign.
"Because of the tremendous amount of publicity she has brought to our sport, we invited the most popular hockey mom in North America to our home opener to help us get our season started," Snider said in a team statement Wednesday. "We are very excited she has accepted our offer and we are very proud of the publicity she is generating for hockey moms and the sport of hockey."
The team will award all hockey moms entered into the contest with a free "puck-er peach" lipstick and four tickets to a hockey game of the Flyers' minor league affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms. The winner will appear on the ice with Palin for opening faceoff.

It seems that the economy will have to bring us to our knees to bring on true change. We're standing at the moment, like a faith healed dude throwing away his crutches on a stage under the lights & hitting the floor shortly after they are conveniently switched off. Maybe the right wingers will come up with a euphemism for unemployment like "temporary wealth abatement".

something of a change of topic, but was listening to NPR this morning and they did a piece on a spanish bank, Banco de Santander.
"Don't sell people deals you would not take yourself" or something like that - the head of the bank quipped. apparantly the banco is doing right well now as others flounder...
ah, the golden rule!!!!
lets be honest.
true, the repugnants and their ideology, as well as a disticntly flippant, irresponsible attitude as exemplified by mushmouth's exhortation to the average schmuk to "go buy crap and take a trip" or something after 9/11, are indeed the primary culprits here. the entire smoke and mirrors, trickle down, quick fix, buy now pay later, voracious triumph of the gluttonous id i place largely on the ideology and mindset encouraged primarily by the gop and their satano-ayrando voodoo economics ideology.
but this is not to say they were in any way alone in this debacle.
the current mortgage crisis was also a fault of well meaning dems who apparantly bought into this mindset as well - forcing banks to loan irresponsibly to home buyers without regard to the future ability of these customers (often first time buyers, unsophisticated in terms of buying homes and credit)...
why was the government encouraging this voodoo irresponsibility and not encouraging builders to build affordable housing which the average schmuk might have been able to afford? with plentiful affordable housing, and a little tiny loosening up of mortgage standards, perhaps a lot of pain could have been avoided all around...perhaps much good could have resulted...
Posted by dexter666 at 10/09/2008 @ 08:16am
but forsooth! (whatever that means)
all that was built were oversized, overpriced, mcmansions and high end upper middle class style slaptogethers...many not worth three quarters the asking price, which was often still beyond the means of schmuko the consumer clown who tried to buy them...
and as for schmuko the consumer clown...schmuko's CHOSEN ignorance, addiction to irresponsible spending (admittedly fueled by the greed of easy money credit extension and encouraged at every step of the way by wall street, madison avenue and washington), greed, sloth, gluttony, and vanity all contributed to the mess as well.
ah, the snake eats its tail, but which end is the head?
for as jimmy carter proved way back when - don't dare tell the truth if its unflattering to the voter!!!! mr./mrs voter won't vote for the uppity pol who points out his/her failings and culpability in consistently electing people who tell them what they want to hear and refuse to tell them what they need to hear...
i'll wait til obama is in the white house for him to tell something resembling the whole truth about the culpability of schmuko the consumer clown in this mess, perhaps not until a second term even...if i'm wrong and he pulls it off more power to him, but wisdom dictates he get elected first and don't fix the machine which aint broken yet...
but i think its waaaay beyond time we started thinking like the head of the Banco de Santander and opt for sane, sustainable growth, golden rule economics and the way of the ant...

If McCain DOES NOT win EVERY state that Bush won in 2000 (given he'll likely pick up NO "Gore-2000" states)...
he loses.
That means if he loses Virginia (which he is right now), much less something like North Carolina...it's over.

It's still up in the air to a degree, but early signs could portend the outcome. If you see results coming in where McCain is "tight" with Obama in Solid Red states like North Carolina or even Georgia....McCain's in trouble.
If he loses Virginia, but wins Florida...he's still in trouble.
If he loses Pennsylvania AND Ohio....he's in trouble.
As above, if Obama wins Florida....it's over for McCain. If Obama wins North Carolina and Virginia (even if McCain wins Florida)...it's over for McCain.
Now all of that is based on PRESENT polling and trends. Still got 4 weeks to go. But it is possible that you could know the winner before the polls close in California.....possible.

Let's hope will be wrong this time too just like they were with Hillary's victory in NH. An Obama administration would be devastating for this country both economically and socially. His pledge to cut taxes for 95% of Americans is MATHEMATICALLY IMPOSSIBLE since 40% of Americans ALREADY pay NO taxes. It's called redistrubution of wealth - i.e SOCIALISM. The guy has never voted for a tax cut before - so why would he start now.
And socially - this is a center right country - Obama and other liberals can only win by pretending to be something they're not. And then when they get into office they let their true colors show. Obama will put more liberal activists judges in place. People like Ruth Ginsberg who sided with the child rapist organization NAMBLA. Look it up if you don't believe me. They'll promote policies that deemphasize family as the basis of society.
People - think of the consequences of your vote. Don't buy into the hype. Obama is LIBERAL. Biden is LIBERAL. Just look at their records. Most of America has always rejected and still rejects liberalism. This time it's just better disguised.
Vote McCain/Palin.

Holy cow! This is very fascist-creepy. And it's true. According to the Army Times web site,
http://www.armytimes.com/news/2008/09/army_homeland_090708w/
"They may be called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control or to deal with potentially horrific scenarios such as massive poisoning and chaos in response to a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-yield explosive, or CBRNE, attack.
"Training for homeland scenarios has already begun at Fort Stewart and includes specialty tasks such as knowing how to use the "jaws of life" to extract a person from a mangled vehicle; extra medical training for a CBRNE incident; and working with U.S. Forestry Service experts on how to go in with chainsaws and cut and clear trees to clear a road or area.
"The 1st BCT's soldiers also will learn how to use "the first ever nonlethal package that the Army has fielded," 1st BCT commander Col. Roger Cloutier said, referring to crowd and traffic control equipment and nonlethal weapons designed to subdue unruly or dangerous individuals without killing them.
"The package is for use only in war-zone operations, not for any domestic purpose."
And if you believe that last sentence, I'll talk to you after the putsch.
A brigade is about a third of a division, something like 3,000 troops and associated equipment. Yikes!

Yup, it sure looks as though AIPAC/Banking lobby Stephin Fetchits Barak Obama and Joe Biden are going to win. But don't count on much in the way of an interruption in our warmongering, unless, of course, General Betrayus disaapoints them by pulling their chestnuts out of the fire by coming out forcefully for a negotiated end to the Afghan farse. But never fear, if Israel decides it wants to attack Lebanon again, they'll be sure to have today's version of cluster bombs available for the job, count on it. And on Iran, if them towel heads get the bomb and start in on that latter day Holocaust, Barak'll fix 'em. I mean better that American's die for Israel than Israelis, of course, particularly since Israel has no nukes of her own. And Russia, can't you tell how agressive Putin is, I mean he's right up their in our face, isn't he. Nice to know that this time I will actually vote for someone who I think (I said "think") will bring the change we need to slow down climate change, get our kids out of the Middle East, stop the wholesale rape of our country by the international corporations, bring sanity back to Washington DC., and start building respect for the U.S. from the international community.
One can only hope.
Oh, I forgot to say, since some folks still are in denial and believe the McCain/Palin ticket (did I get that right, or is it Palin/McCain - so confusing!) is going to bring any kind of change to politics in DC: GO BARACK AND JOE!!

Stepin Fetchit was the stage name of American comedian and film actor Lincoln Theodore Monroe Andrew Perry (May 30, 1902–November 19, 1985). Perry parlayed the Fetchit persona into a successful film career, eventually becoming a millionaire, the first black actor in history to do so. [Wikipedia]
I just bet he was laughing at all the white persons laughing at him.

Doesn't the constant fishing and the begging for assurance about my presence here after the election leave you with a decided contempt for yourself, Maskedcaca? Most self-respecting people would feel that way. But what to expect from someone that calls others "stupid" yet can't manage properly to spell "Stephin Fetchit", "poseur" and "continuing". I know, you were working on how to be a douche-nozzle when the English and spelling courses were being offered and you succeeded! And yes, that's right, now say "duh" and bend over and crack a smile for us.

Ah, yes. I clearly remember the little sneeze caused by the popping bubbles when trying to get the first sip from the bottle.
"Thanks for the memory Of rainy afternoons, swingy Harlem tunes And motor trips and burning lips and burning toast and prunes How lovely it was! "

He probably was, Tunnelrat. And the Stephin Fetchit that I referred to above is taking money from and probably laughing at all the people here and elsewhere who had trusted him on things like FISA, and bringing troops home from Iraq, and off-shore drilling, and NAFTA, and campaign finance reform and .... You get it, I'm sure.

It took three disasters to sway the voters, the downturn in the economy, the war in the wrong country and Sarah Palin.

"Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything." J. Stalin Still valid today?

Terribly sorry, Looney. Not up on the correct spelling of racial slurs.
Point to you for that one.

Florida is the key and if Obama can make it in Ohio, its more than over. I just fear the hypocrites in the voting booth "taking a second look" on his race..
If the Dems don't make it this year, that will mean we have at least 25% of our fellow citizens with serious mental problems of accepting people of color.

There's also the "Reverse Bradley Effect" (the BE being people who SAY they'll vote for a black candidate for PC reasond, but don't).
The RBE is a large number of folks who due to employers or peer pressure SAY they don't like Obama...but are sick of Bush and don't want 4 more years of his economic policies (which is what McCain promises).
They'll crack jokes on Obama or say "That guy's a far left-winger"...but secretly they don't want to keep going the way we've been going for another 4.
And they are a lot more scared of "President Caribou Barbie" than a "President Obama".

So I suppose we should thank the wacko....in the next 27 days that he'll be around.
LOL

Mannn, checking out Real Clear Politics -- wow, the combo of the Dem convention & Palin "phenomenom" seems to have started the blue line domination. This really has been an amazing ride from the Huckabee oddities to Temple Mitt to the Hillary evils.

Anyone willing to guess:
Will they be pressing this Ayers crap for another 7 days? 27 days?
What else will they try? What will Rove do next?
False flag of some variety?

Nawww...his sole raison d'etre is this lame-ass and/or crazy attempt to garner votes for Nader. Like Nader, Looney will disappear soon after Election Day.

we're just too lovable to let us go.
plus, to whom else could he deliver such odd insults?

When I look at news articles about the corporate identity of much of Obama's financial donations several questions occur to me:
Does all this mean that the Democratic Party will now serve the function of being the primary protector of the corporate dominated status quo?
Are we simply heading toward an era where the center will be located squarely within a corporate-friendly Democratic Party, with the Republicans playing an increasingly marginal role?
With the failure of any third parties to win more than one or two seats in Congress, what alternative strategies will progressives be able to take?
I think we are all experiencing the curse of living in interesting times.
