The proper, respectful and appropriate description for an foe in a debate between two senators is "the senator" or -- if there is a desire to get flowery -- "my distinguished colleague."
But Arizona Senator John McCain, who after a quarter century on Capitol Hill surely knows the political etiquette, could not bring himself to refer to Illinois Senator Barack Obama as he would any other colleague.
Discussing a 2005 Senate vote, McCain said, "There was an energy bill on the floor of the Senate loaded down with goodies, billions for the oil companies, and it was sponsored by Bush and Cheney. You know who voted for it? You might never know. That one," he said, motioning toward Obama. "You know who voted against it? Me."
That one?
That one?
If Obama had referred to McCain as "that one," he would have been attacked for showing disrespect or ridiculed for being so new to the Senate that he did not understand the basic behaviors of the chamber.
Either way, it would have been a devastating moment.
And it should be for McCain, as well.
Understand what the Republican nominee was doing.
He did not slip up.
The McCain campaign and its media acolytes have for weeks been spinning the notion that Obama is running as some sort of messianic character who sees himself in something akin to Biblical terms.
In internet advertisements, campaign spin and talk-show commentary, Obama is mocked as "the one."
A McCain Web commercial from earlier this year compared Obama with the Nazarene. That ad opened with the announcer declaring, "It shall be known that in 2008 the world will be blessed. They will call him 'The One.'"
The ad proceeds to ridicule Obama's high-minded rhetoric before closing with the narrator telling Americans: "Barack Obama may be 'The One.' But is he ready to lead?"
That commercial has long been recognized as one of the more amateurish cheapshots from a campaign characterized all too frequently by amateurish cheapshots.
Now, John McCain has brought the cheapest of the cheapshots to the debate stage.
It was, for a senior senator who has embarrassed himself too many times during this long campaign, a uniquely embarrassing moment.

There will be more, and worse. McCain is desperate and his ambition knows no bounds.

I heard Palin, in the Biden debate, never referred to Obama as "senator."
Posted by winyahn at 10/08/2008 @ 12:49am
"That one" was unpleasant and disrespectful and will probably be one of the McCain quotes from the night that sticks with people. But I don't see any relation with the business about Obama being "The One".
On the contrary, it's the exact opposite... "The One" is the McCain campaign's sarcastic mock exaltation of Obama as a celebrity of Biblical proportions. "That one" is pure McCain... he did slip up, and for a moment he was unable to mask his contempt for Obama, such that he could barely muster a pronoun to indicate him, much less the dignified honorific that decorum called for.
The "That one" moment is more akin to the Joe Biden closing statement in last week's SNL VP debate parody. "Joe Biden is better than THAT..." indicating Sarah Palin. Now reality is imitating art.

just the death rattles of a dismal attempt at a bid for the presidency by an angry old man
Posted by leftnut at 10/08/2008 @ 12:54am
I just watched a clip from a couple of months ago of McCain saying "I promise to run a respectful compaign. I promise to refer to both Clinton and Obama as 'Senator'."
So much for McCain's promises.
The man is not just losing this election. He is pissing away both his honor AND his political future.
After he loses this election, he will have defecated so heavily on his public 'hero' persona and reputation...
...it will be the end of his political career.

Those two words - said so quickly and so clearly - were the one true moment of the whole debate for McCain. He was wound up so tight with his anger that the words flew from his mouth before he could stop them. His utter hatred and disdain for Obama, and the fact he is losing, clearly makes his blood boil. This was the most honest thing he said all night and it showed his true colors. He is a small man, with no dignity left.
Posted by Liontamer at 10/08/2008 @ 01:11am
I think "that one" is, at best, curmudgeonly and dismissive, at worst, the 2008 equivalent of Ross Perot's "you people". We'll see.
Posted by Be Good at 10/08/2008 @ 01:11am
What's astonishing is that apparently the Republicans are calling it the one memorable line of the debate, and planning to make it part of their "theme"--perhaps to cover up the ugly possibility that viewers will think McCain couldn't remember Senator Obama's name. If a campaign is still developing its theme this close to an election, it is in deep trouble.

John McCain reminds me of a grumpy old grandpa who would take you behind the barn and hit you with a belt if you acted up or something. Note how he stomped off after the debate in a huff. I certainly would not want this man to "have his finger on the button".

I think he's pissing away the MYTH of his honor, Lil. An examination of his life shows someone to whom honor is an utterly foreign concept. The McCain of this campaign is indeed the real genuine McCain, and he simply demonstrates patterns that date back a full 70 years, when, as a 2-year old, he would throw severe tantrums (holding his breath until he passed out). He has spent a lifetime thumbing his nose at the very idea that rules apply to him. His serial adultery is well-known, as is his abusiveness to his current wife (e.g., the 1992 incident) and to many of those around him. He seems to revel in the fact that a lot of people who know him see him as an asshole, what with the Miss Congeniality comments. He is a sick, twisted, pathetic, bitter, utterly dishonorable old man, and the only difference between now and pretty much most of his life is the "old" part of that equation.

Civility is long gone from politics.
I've listened to Olbermann, Maher, Letterman, Limbaugh, O'Riley, Stewart, Colbert, and the rest insult politicians for years now.
If you can't take it you're in the wrong business.
Obama is "that one".
"That one" that's the next president.
And if he screws up he'd better have thick skin.
(I'm sure an effigy of Obama will be burned somewhere in the middle east soon if one hasn't already. And just image what nicknames Putin has for the O.)
Posted by bleedingheart at 10/08/2008 @ 03:33am
Kaput.
Obama/Biden have at least 340 electoral college votes locked up.
McCain has to do something, as he can't very well concede before election day. So with nothing left to lose, he reveals himself.
A mean-spirited, intemperate, irresponsible bigot.
Now if he can only pull down more of the GOP with him ... enough so the GOP fails to reach 40 senatorial seats. May be too much to hope for, as there may still be enough bigots & morons around to vote against their own interests, particulalry in the former slave states.

It was a disgracful moment in the debate and in this campaign. McCain is living up to his "bad temperment" label with vigor. Senator Obama deserves respect. It just shows the American voters that McCain and Palin are angry, hate mongering representatives of a failed party and a failed Bush administration. Do we really need another four years of hate, name calling, and us against them mentality? I think not. The next four or eight years is a time to heal the wounds, give folks a reason to believe and change our perception throughout the world. McCain and Palin are what's wrong with America's image at home and abroad. Barack Obama and Joe Biden are what's needed to restore our dignity.

Do you pick these facts out of your ass? Social Security is solid for about 30 more years. And all that is needed to make it solid forever is to raise the cap on paying into the system. As it is now people who earn over $102,000 a year pay no tax.
As for Medicare, if it was expanded to include everyone we wouldn't have a "For Profit" healthcare system. And operating costs would drop significantly. Plus it would be a single payer system and everyone would be paying in Med tax. So it would help finance the system. The Government would actually have to chip in much less than they do now.
Do a little research instead of running off at the mouth.
Posted by chaoszen at 10/08/2008 @ 08:51am

Posted by onthehelm at 10/08/2008 @ 08:54am
The reason we cannot,'just pay each our own heathcare' has one underlying false premise. It is that 'we', taxpayers, are not paying any of the healthcare costs now.
Fully 50% of all healthcare costs are picked up by taxpayers. We cover the cost of the military, the govt workers, the poor, the retired.
The government coverage costs less than the private insurance that I own and in many ways is better coverage.
Why shouldn't we get rid of private insurance in favor of universal coverage? We would save our auto companies. There are many other companies that would become much more competitive. Small business would be helped; including new start ups.
Doesn't this sound like a 'solid' republican arguement for universal healthcare?
Most importantly, it is the moral thing to do. Many hard working people are getting the squeeze as corporate America races for the bottom. This is an opportunity for WE THE PEOPLE to draw a line.
Posted by joelawake at 10/08/2008 @ 09:01am
As a conservative, I have to admit that when McCain said "that one" I found it disrespectful--one of those situations where you are only half paying attention and after he said it, think "did he just say that?"
Of course, McCain had already lost me when he said he wanted to buy up all those bad mortgages.
Who else is running in this election?

That is a very good point. I had not got around to that one yet. It's maybe the most important benefit of Universal Healthcare. Companies would no longer be stuck with trying to provide healthcare benefits to their employees which would save them a ton of money.
More businesses would be attracted to basing their companies here and entrepreneurs would be induced to start more small business ventures. Good Point.

You have seriously got to be kidding me? With all of the things going on in this country right now to be concerned with, and with all that was discussed - THIS is what we need to focus in on? Could it really be possible that no one here noticed Obama calling McCain "JOHN" throughout the entire first debate, while McCain consistently called him Senator Obama? Really didn't notice that??? Didn't notice his constant interruptions when McCain was speaking in the first debate? In my opinion, he came across as a rude teenager - but that's my opinion. What amazes me is I didn't hear this mentioned once in the coverage following the first debate. But now - OH MY GOD - he said "that one". Glad to know there's another racist term that I've somehow been unaware of until now.
The fact remains, those for Obama will remain for him, those for McCain will remain in favor of him. But it never ceases to amaze me what the media will hook on to following these types of events.
Funny thing - I had to dig to verify the story someone told me about Florida Democrat Alcee Hastings saying since Palin was a hunter, she didn't care what happened to Jews and Blacks. And it wasn't easy finding the story about Charlie Rangle, when asked why Democrats were afraid to challenge Palin more directly, said "you've got to be kind to the disabled". Google it, real stories. I'm sure most of you will find these comments humorous because a Democrat made them, but at least they didn't call someone "that one" right?
Maybe we can now create a "that one" crisis, to go along with all the others - global warming, health care, financial, home mortgage, education, unemployment, Iran, Iraq, etc. At least if Obama is elected, we'll get a break on the media crisis of the week routine for a while.
Posted by sickovitall at 10/08/2008 @ 09:54am
I disagree that this was a deliberate effort by McCain to make a derisive reference to Obama as "The One." I think he was mad, frustrated, and at a loss for words. It was apparent in his lead up to the statement.
Democrats: please stop connecting every negative ad or campaign tactic to race. There are plenty of racist, insane, fundamentalist whack-jobs who call Obama H Obama (clever) and Osama-oops-I-mean-Obama (cleverer), but there are also people who legitimately have reservations about Obama's experience and record. But aside from Palin's "Obama is a terrorist who is not like us" statements, and McCain's "who is this man," which are beyond the pale, hit-bottom-and-start-digging race-baiting tactics (which really deserves more attention from the media - seriously are McCain and Palin trying to emulate pre-epiphany George Wallace?), these crazies should be ignored and Americans should keep focusing on the issues.
Posted by jaged1 at 10/08/2008 @ 09:56am
Yes, referring to Senator Obama as "that one" was offensive, but what really bothered me was McCain's condescending tone in addressing the audience. When Oliver Clark, a young African American, asked about the bailout, McCain said, "I'll bet you, you may never even have heard of [Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac] before this crisis."
Why would he "bet" that a person of color would not know about institutions that have been so important in promoting home ownership among minorities?! I was just hoping Obama would start his answer with something along the lines of "Mr. Clark, I would never assume that you hadn't heard of Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac."

There was a time, when Mccain was younger, I would have given him serious consideration. At his core I believe he is a good man who wants only the best for his country and its people. If my memory serves correctly, he had his best chance at the presidency in 2000, until the evil Bush machine (Rove, Cheney, etc, etc) bush-whacked him in South Carolina. But it's obvious now his age and possibly his health has caught up with him. He does appear to have fallen to the level of regretful, impatient, grumpy old man. McCain supporters (and his family) should urge him to pull back, to let the chips fall where they may - before he falls apart. It would be terrible if that were to happen publicly.
The race is over. We have a new president for a new time. And this voter is looking forward - cautiously - to the future.

Let's have the guys who have created or at least been a major part of our current financial mess be in charge of our health care. Outstanding idea.
Still waiting to see that little tidbit reported somewhere.

Yeah they pay tax up to $102,000 and none thereafter. So raise the cap and Social Security is solid.
You will have to excuse me if i "assume" that most folks already know that..

The hatred that McCain has for Obama is far greater than "That one". If the first debate is recalled, McCain didnt look at Obama even once throughout the session.
This old fox is being trained by more foxier spin experts, throughout instead of giving a logical relevant answers/summary to the questions posed his replies were empty/hollow/placid such as "I know how to do it" or "How it is done" or "He doesnt know, I know". Never, this is how I will get it done, 1,2,3.... etc. What filth from a presidential candidate when the whole world is affected with global economy crises and is looking at us to do something about it, and here this old short-handed incompetent guy , was stammering all through is the answer for that? He got Sarah Cheney Palin on board to rectify washington? Her own houses both official and unofficial are in disorder, 7 of her aides are up against her for the troopgate scandal. And 312 lawmakers sessions she has missed, wherein they wore badges "where Sarah?" and she was out for fishing, hunting and what not, and here she is expected to run the country if Mccain dies anytime near? Make Sean Penn or Jesse Ventura the vice presidents but not her - hockey mom my foot. Only sex starved guys will vote for her as she oozes out sex only but not any substance that relates to our live.

That's awesome! While reading an article about McCain calling someone "that one" and I'm sure being totally offended, you respond by calling Palin "Glacier Gidget".
Good thing our friends on the left don't stoop to the slimy right wing tactics of name calling!
By the way, also loved the fact that when asked to name one thing he DOESN'T know - Obama finally didn't have an answer to something. Instead, listed the 500 talking points he's repeated time and again over the past year.

Obama sucks!! Both political parties should be ashamed for even putting him in the race, he has to denounce all his friends, rev wright who damns america, rezko corrupt business, his friend johnson who took 21 million from fannie mae, and yes ayers the terroist, but yet we still will put him in office with the sme name with the people we are fighting..hmm you may not like mccain but why would you put someone in office that has o idea what he is doing??? hell at least mccain served our country, Obama just a kid who's daddy didnt want him and has the nerve to call his grandma a "typical white person" guess he's a typical terroist.

yeah, I caught this too...
anyway, re: the bailout, I quote a passage from benjamin barber's book (not me) called consumed which was written before bailout:
"socialism when it comes to costs (the now classic Chrysler Corporation bailout), but market capitalism when it comes to profits. Ironically, firms that are politically connected to the government by which they hope to be bailed out do better than those without such connections."
with this logic in my mind I know people who just bought Ford and GM...
I hope they both go bankrupt...they both just got $25,000,000,000 as part of new bailout package and are asking for me, presumably to build more energy efficient cars...THIS IS A LIE....they are sucking us dry...we need to boycott these liars...."that one" called bush is the real liar....
when paulson elect his old goldman sachs colleage kneel cash carry out of business school only four years ago 35 y/o to manage and delve out as he sees fits to whomever he chooses, $700,000,000.000 this is reprehensible....
for those already laid off, if you are picketing, please announce when/where for everybody's benefit...
nobody at the top reads these blogs....
they will react to protests...and caricatures being burned in effigy...if it is effective in other third-world states, why not here?? we are rapidly becoming one....or more of a fiefdom....where only political connections count for anything....this is wrong...

That says it all. Guess I don't remember that being covered in the Bill of Rights.Posted by sickovitall at 10/08/2008 @ 10:00am
It was covered in the Bill of Rights aswell as well as in The Declaration of Independence. If not specifically then by intention and spirit. In the Bill of Rights we have the 9th,10th,11th and 12th amendments. Which allow the people and the states to basically decide to do whatever is not expressly delagated to Congress. In other words if we want Universal Healthcare there is nothing stopping us from having it.
In the Declaration of Independence which is not the same as the Constitution in a legal sense still carries the spirit of the founding fathers. We have certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
I don't know about you but I can't see how sick people have much of a chance to pursue Life, Liberty and Happiness if they are riddled with disease.

So -- the Duke and the Dolphin are at it again. Where's Mr. Twain when he's needed?
** OK, don't get mad, get even.Let's air the Muthee tape anointing Palin Queen of Alaska until incredulous viewers realize the depths of Palin's commitment to xian dominionism.
Palin is a witch hunter. I suppose that we should be grateful that she doesn't yet shoot alleged witches from air craft.
Palin learned how to hunt witches from a "genuine" witch hunter. Her disgusting mentor, far-right theolog, the so-called "Bishop" Thomas Muthee at Wasilla's Center of Jesus-the-Sorcerer.
And, this story is mostly true. So, where is the anger from anyone? Why isn't Palin run out on a rail, like any other common bawd --
McCain & Palin, the Duke & Dolphin right out of Huckleberry Finn. Those damn' cheatin' frauds -- Mark Twain had'em tarred and feathered, and only then run out of town on a rail.

[By WILLIAM GLABERSON Published: October 7, 2008 WASHINGTON -- A federal judge on Tuesday ordered the Bush administration to release 17 detainees at Guantánamo Bay by the end of the week, the first such ruling in nearly seven years of legal disputes over the administration's detention policies.
"I think the moment has arrived for the court to shine the light of constitutionality on the reasons for detention," Judge Urbina said.
Saying the men had never fought the United States and were not a security threat, he tersely rejected Bush administration claims that he lacked the power to order the men set free in the United States and government requests that he stay his order to permit an immediate appeal.
The government recently conceded that it would no longer try to prove that the Uighurs were enemy combatants, the classification it uses to detain people at Guantánamo, where 255 men are now held. ]

I guess if we were a Christian Country we would take take of ALL Americans. But evidently we are only a Christian Country in the bedroom.
right now Pontis tax dollars (assuming he can keep a job) are being used to pay for healthcare for those he despises. His healthcare dollars are being used to pay for healthcare for those he fears. 50% of bankruptcy filings are due to medical expenses, so every time some one declares bankruptcy Ponti pays.
The difference is it is done with 28%+ administrative overhead and profit taking, as well as paying for Scrushy's legal tab.

The concept of a negro with a "Moses" complex, i.e., a black man who other black people call "The One," has a long history in racist culture in the South. Lest anyone think this comment is coming from some wild eyed liberal, it was first voiced by Michael Gerson on one of the Sunday talk shows a month or so ago. The McCain slime machine uses the term fully knowing its coded meaning among bigoted whites. McCain's use of "That One" in the debate is all part of this effort.

Perhaps you could explain the ALaska Independence Party and how membership is actually a statement of love of country?
Who is Obama really? Is he a constitutional law instructor, or a secret mooselum?
Is he a community organizer working with christian churches to get people off welfare, or is he a fist bump terrorist golfer?
Is he a mixed race child raised in middle America that went on to become a rising star in the Chicago business community, raised himself by his bootstraps in a real life example of living the American Dream, or is he a secret White Women sex fiend?
Is he a man that served on aboard with another man that did something bad 30 years ago, or is he a CEO of a multi-national corporation that moved it's PO box off shore to keep from paying it's share of taxes while it did business with Iran, Syria, Qhaddafi and Saddam Hussein?

By using THAT ONE, McCain is trying to invoke "less than human" objectification, kind of like when one refers to an animal or insect. Some with racist inclinations refer to non-Whites in this manner, and McCain was trying to subtly appeal to these kinds of voters.
Posted by Metteyya at 10/08/2008 @ 12:59pm
Come on, people. McCain's remark was tactless and rude, but it comes from a man who is clearly about as comfortable in front of a TV camera as Nixon on his worst days. Progressives don't help themselves in seeing some vast conspiracy behind every McCain gaffe. There is plenty to be outraged about on what are indisputedly orchestrated bits of disrespect to Obama (viz., campaign adds) without overreaching in this way.

Get used to hearing two words... PRESIDENT OBAMA
Posted by BizarroRio at 10/08/2008 @ 1:08pm
Doesn't it seem like mccain is suffering from excessive anger. His behavior shows a man who may still be angry because of his military experience. He did not vote to increase benefits to vets. He appears to be suffering from depression (anger turned inwards). He is known to be disrespectful to his wife. He was definately angry last night. That smirk seems to be a perminate part of his face. Maybe he is angry because he has always gotten what he wants. It was his father and grand-fathers pull that made him a navy pilot. It certainly was not his talent. He wrecked three planes. One because he was goofing off trying to fly under utility wires. Some believe he may be responisible for the tradagy on the Forrestall. Did he help his fellow sailors when escaping from his inflamed plane? NO! Some believe he even collaberated with the VC! He is basically a poor example of an American Senator. To think someone like mccain could be president is insane. We could never elect someone who is soooo incomp..... oops I forgot about bush!
Posted by Truthman at 10/08/2008 @ 1:12pm
I don't actually think it was racist or particularly even that insulting, and some are going over the top with this one.
But I do think it made McCain seem old and crotchety. Sounded (and looked with his frenetic jabbing at Obama) a bit like my departed grandfather in his later years.

Unbelievable-You really wrote "encourage India to annihilate Pakistan". You do realize that the only way India could annihilate Pakistan is with nukes and that Pakistan also has nukes. So, let me get this straight...You want India and Pakistan to get into a thermonuclear war with US troops stationed next door in Afghanistan????? This of course would only embolden the terrorists who hate our freedoms...You troop hating/terror loving motherfucker!!!

Even in the hills of Idaho and Montana there is a sea change going on where kitchen table issues are trumping the concerns of the wealthy business types that you seem to be concerned about.
Maybe you should have spread some of your ill-gotten gains to your brothers in those hills, 'cause now they are more likely to put a bullet in your head before they would consider putting one in Obama's.

Congress spent the money (GOP and DEM alike). Obama may win but he won't be president for more than one term like Carter was if he makes it that long, which despite what you may think I would not like to see and the calamity it would create would be very bad for the nation, but I am sure there are many people in the hills of Idaho and Montana who are cleaning their guns as we speak. It only takes one nut and one bullet to change history.

BTW, with public schools, roads, retirement benefits, healthcare (medicare/medicaid), GSE's (Fannie/Freddie and now AIG), corporate welfare/subsidies, government run financial markets (The Fed) and a federal government that is the single largest employer in the country-What makes universal healthcare so deplorable?

I hope McCain gets LOTS of advice from people like you.
His "nastiness" is costing him the election, as this election has become a referendum on Karl Rove "divide and distract" politics.
Distraction only works if the one you are trying to distract is unaware that this is what you are doing. Once they become aware that you are trying to distract them from focusing on the economic issues that really matter to them, the distraction fails miserably!

Just get it from his strange mannerisms... in debate 1-- never looking at Obama... in his disdainful treatment of Obama on the Senate Floor during the bailout bill when Obama approached him.... and now, "That one." it's the same old coded Republican bullshit... It's Willy Horton... it's the white woman telling Harold Ford Jr. to call her in the Corker commercial.... it's the GOP trying to hold America back from its destiny as a democracy that doesn't view people based on race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.

Some facts for the health care buffs (from a Canadian perspective):
1. I choose my own doctor an HMO doesn't. 2. My taxes (income, cigarettes, alcohol and such) pay for my health care. 3. In 2005 the per capita spending on health care in Canada $3,326 and in the USA $6,401. And, 46 million of you south of the border aren't covered. All of us are. By the way, the USA spends more money per capita on health care than any other nation in the world. 4. The USA spent 15.3% of its GDP on health care and Canada 9.8%. 5. U.S. government spending covers less than half of all health care costs. Private spending for health care is also far greater in the U.S. than in Canada. In Canada, an average of $917 was spent annually by individuals or private insurance companies for health care, including dental, eye care, and drugs. In the U.S., this sum is $3,372. 6. Administrative costs for health care are also higher in the United States than in Canada. 7. One of the most important differences between the two countries is the much higher cost of drugs in the United States. In the U.S., $728 per capita is spent each year on drugs, while in Canada it is $509. At the same time, consumption is higher in Canada, with about 12 prescriptions being filled per person each year in Canada and 10.6 in the United States. The main difference is that patented drug prices in Canada average between 35% and 45% lower than in the United States. The price differential for brand-name drugs between the two countries has led Americans to purchase upward of US$1 billion in drugs per year from Canadian pharmacies.

Some facts for the health care buffs (part 2 of 3)from a Canadian perspective):
8. And for those of you who like to say that malpractice suits are the cause of high costs: The extra cost of malpractice lawsuits accounts for some of the difference in health spending in the two countries. In Canada the total cost of settlements, legal fees, and insurance comes to $4 per person each year, but in the United States it is $16. Average payouts to American plaintiffs were $265,103, while payouts to Canadian plaintiffs were somewhat higher, averaging $309,417. However, malpractice suits are far more common in the U.S., with 350% more suits filed each year per person. While malpractice costs are significantly higher in the U.S., they make up only a small proportion of total medical spending. The total cost of defending and settling malpractice lawsuits in the U.S. in 2001 was approximately $6.5 billion, or 0.46% of total health spending 9. Who gets better care? One commonly cited comparison, the World Health Organization's ratings of health care system performance among 191 member nations published in 2000, ranked Canada 30th and the U.S. 37th, and the overall health of Canadians 35th and Americans 72nd. (However, waiting times for major non-emergency surgery have been longer in Canada.)

Some facts for the health care buffs (part 3 of 3 from a Canadian perspective):
10. A peer-reviewed comparison study of health care access in the two countries published in 2006 concluded that U.S. residents are one third less likely to have a regular medical doctor, one fourth more likely to have unmet health care needs, and are more than twice as likely to forgo needed medicines. The study noted that access problems "were particularly dire for the US uninsured." Those who lack insurance in the U.S. were much less satisfied, less likely to have seen a doctor, and more likely to have been unable to receive desired care than both Canadians and insured Americans. 11. I'll end with some basic statistics from 2002: U.S. Canada Life Expectancy (Male) 74.8 77.4 Life Expectancy (Female) 80.1 82.4 Infant Mortality/1000 live births 6.8 5.3 Obesity Rate (Male) 31.1 17.0 Obesity Rate (Female) 32.2 19.0 HC spending as % of GDP (2005) 16.0% 10.4%
Through all entities in its public-private system, the U.S. spends more per capita than any other nation in the world, but is the only wealthy industrialized country in the world that lacks some form of universal health care.
I hope this straightens a few things out for those who seem so worried about universal health care.

Funny about gupdog's story about his Indian friends. I worked with an Indian fellow from 1999 - 2004. He was educated in India and came from an well-to-do family. he came to the US in 1975. I would jokingly tell him he was as American as I am because he had been in America as long as I had( I was born in 1976). He talked to me about Muslim-Hindi relations often. He mentioned Kashmir as well as the fact that he had muslim friends. He also mentioned how he knew that not all muslims were bad because of his friendships. He never mentioned violence towards anyone let alone Pakistan. I just wanted to offer a counter to gupdog's "stories".

I'm appreciative that you are addressing the hidden theocratic underpinnings of McCain's language and actions.
But respectfully, you aren't taking it where it truly lies, and that is of the Republican Party's integration into the Assembly of God and other Pentecostal and televangelist terrorist activities.
These people and their organizations are well-funded, very heavily armed, and they are actively and effectively infiltrating and taking over all aspects of government administration, direction and function.
They have one mission, one goal - to effect a complete and total world war which will destroy all civilization.
Victory. I posted about this at the Home of the Brave blog at Wordpress.com.
They use that word over and over and over again. But it doesn't refer to military victory - because there is no declared national enemy in Iraq to conquer.
It refers to taking over the US in government, military, and civilian authority and control so that a global nuclear war can be carried out.
McCain and Palin need to be investigated and charged with treason and terrorism NOW. As does the Republican Party, the Assemblies of God and every other "religious" organization which is fronting for a domestic terrorist organization.
They are dangerous, they are armed, and they want nothing good for you, your family and your country.

The entire McPalin campaign is predicated on fear, hatred and lies. It is impressive to watch it fall apart. I have never been confident in American voters, yet now everytime McCain attempts a new stunt it backfires. This guy is a spoiled brat; he's never succeeded at anything, but he truly believes that he is entitled to the presidency. His desparation to outrank his father and grandfather is leading him down this destructive path. The efforts at creating fear and the lies are too numerous to mention. However, the audiences at the campaign's recent hate-rallys should terrify every American. These groups should complete the picture by goose-stepping.

dog, i'm in montana. in my neck of the frozen tundra, obama is perfectly safe and loved. he watched the fourth of july parade here--right there on harrison avenue, with everyone else. then he went to a picnic lunch out in the open, grassy knolls all around.
you, on the other hand, dog, would not last a day, spewing your ignorance, dragging your knuckles, drooling all over yourself like you do, before you joined america's missing, never to be heard from again.

Hey FishPuppy,
Barack worked on stopping "Loose Nukes" with Republican Chuck Hagel(you'd like what Chuck had to say about Palin BTW).
"Loose Nukes" coming out of the former Soviet Union have posed a bigger threat for longer, and could be more easily used than anything Iran or Iraq would be able to produce. We had Iraq under control prior to invading post 9/11. Saddam was a control mechanism, that is all. Now that Bush/Cheney screwed it all up, Iran and Iraq pose a bigger problem now than they ever did prior to 9/11.
Wait...what am I doing trying to talk sense to someone who has none.
Sorry FishPuppy, I shouldn't expect you to exercise your brain without stretching first...you might pull something.

Hey dandlion, it's all good. I've done the same thing too.
As far as Palin goes, I guess what bothers me the most is how easily swayed by fluff people are. I thought that stuff was saved for babies and puppies. Or 4 year olds who really can't sing any better than any other 4 year old. I knew Americans could be gullible but MY GOD!!! I almost wonder if a candidate could get away with this 4 weeks from an election ride a wave into office and only then have people say..."What the fuck did we just do?" I try not be surprised by the rampant stupidity in this country, but we seem to keep out-doing ourselves.
I posted somewhere else that What if Obama had a preacher who was "Laying Hands" on him saying protect him from witchcraft? Like Palin did with head bowed. He'd be called a practitioner of Voodoo. If Michelle was a "Secessionist" like "The First Dude of Alaska" the Obama's would have never got out of Iowa. Yet the "mainstream media" just keep talking about fluff when it comes to her.
All of that being said, I am thankful that he picked her because I do think it back-fired in a lot of ways. But the fact that so many people are so excited about voting for her really freaks me out. With the media it's the principal, with her supporters it's confusion and absurdity of how much they like someone they don't know and never heard of two months ago. They don't even care about her actual policies or capabilities, but gutting a moose is important to being President. I always knew people let dumb things sway their vote, but people that support her should seriously be ashamed for being so gullible.
In the end she'll go back to Alaska and lose her re-election bid, but I hope we've learned a lesson about VP's with Cheney.

It might be possible to create a new energy source by putting all the heads together of people like GupDog, McCain and Palin(and everyone campaigning for them), Bush, Cheney, Lieberman, O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Mona Charen, Maggie Gallagher, Michelle Malkin and the many others like them. I bet with their heads all lined up ear to ear we could create the world's most powerful wind tunnel. Why not finally put the space between their ears to good use?

I share your fears about Palin, but even though the general media is doing a miserable job of detailing what a pathetic fraud both her and the irrational one are, I think and hope that the majority of U.S citizens are coming to realize that whatever was "rotten in Denmark" has crossed a significant body of water. At this point, I am actually more worried about whether the value of the act of voting itself has been destroyed by Rovian tactics, the new "Gosh, ain't they dandy" electronic ballots, and what I see as the distinct possibility that we may not even be "allowed" to have an election via Presidential Directive 51. I am afraid that I am going to have to call it a day, I am well into my 22cnd hour and words on the screen are starting to run together. Amazing that I can proof read three or four times and not see something until after I submit it.

If Obama wins Florida, go to bed early. Miss UnChristian hate-speech Palin will be headed home to her igloo where she will be impeached and back to no career. My brother who lives in Wasilla, says he will vote for her just to get her our of Alsaka. Boy, is that a sad state of affairs. I mailed in my ballot today. The voting has begun here in California.
I think Obama has California locked. . . but I am happy to be able to vote for him.
I am 55. When I was growing up on Chicago's Southside, which was considered one of the most racially stratefied cities in the country in those days, with rigid lines between blacks and whites, I could never have imagined a black person running for national office.
I am proud of all of us, collectively, for being a country with the potential to value civil rights and opportunity for all.
When I was growing up, you never even saw black people on television. And there were virtually no women leaders either.
The world has to change. It is a fact of life, change. I am proud of all of us that we have been able to nominate a black person for the President and I hope to christ he wins.

NEOCONS - made you look. Yes - you
There are some new trolls dropping in, looking for a weak spot to exploit on Obama's health care plan.
Notice how little they say of McCain's $5000. Do a little page search. Not one mention of this.
OK, yeah... Health Care as a right? Clever Limbaugh retort, it's not in the Bill of Rights.
Subtext, big govt liberals, etc. All the same stuff you used the corporate media to suffocate Gore, Kerry.
First your heroes aren't exactly financial / fiscal conservatives or any ideology whatsoever besides ineptiology.
Second, the Bill of Rights doesn't mention "health" or "medical" or "marriage" or "pregnancy" or "family" or "$5000"/whatever McCain's promising either.
Third, don't hide behind these zinger, state your position clearly. For ex., respond to these basic questions.
Exactly how far would you take your position??? Stand up and be counted. Your opinion - Yes / No:
Should private health care providers / corporations be able to deny care/coverage to:
Anyone without insurance or the ability to pay?
Regardless of age (neonates / elderly)
Regardless of history (vets, AIDS)
Same line of questions for government -
Homeless psychotic vet?
Baby still kickin' in a dumpster?
Where exactly do you draw the line? Try hard not to dodge the details.

Some of you may be surprised at his comment; you should not be because as John N stated in this article and that I as well concur with him......."it was not a slip up. Racism, incompetence, stupidity, etc. make up the very fabric of McCain's and people like him (Stevens, Kenning, Bush, Bolton, etc.) existence.
Unfortunately these are the people that continuously are put in positions of power regardless of how incompetent they are. Besides that comment, what about when Oliver posed his question to the candidates concerning "tension felt by homeowners..."? Part of McCain's (again stupid/incompetent..) response to Oliver (called him by the wrong name as well) was that "Oliver probably never heard of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac before the financial crisis erupted".......what?!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by rayven at 10/08/2008 @ 8:38pm
McCain's words to black Oliver, "I'll bet you, you may never even have heard of them before this crisis."
In context, it's creepy. Wouldn't find it that harsh otherwise...

Neither candidate has proven that they have the qualities so desperately needed in the next president...dignity, honesty, and integrity. With America so torn, this could have been the year when a true viable independent candidate with those qualities would win. I guess we'll still have to wait for a savior to rise from the streets. I only hope that happens in my lifetime.

Long, long time ago, when the primaries were underway, I just knew it would come down to Obama and McCain, because the timing is so apropos. An old white man against an uppity young black man is the perfect imagery for the necessary changes long overdue in this country.
Now, to have some real fun, McCain should stop saying, "That one," and refer to Obama as "boy." Then, Obama could call McCain "Massa John."
Ah! Good times on the old plantation.
Posted by Tunnelrat at 10/08/2008 @ 10:04pm
"None of the Above" should be on every elected position on every ballot in the country, from 'Dog Catcher' on up to 'President Elect'. THAT should make for far more interesting campains. Also on the 'Health Care' front; There should not be private, for profit, legal fictions being able to have life or death decision making ability over human beings or the rest of the critters on this place this place we call home, it is bad enough we've got governments doing that. (This goes real deep and I don't have my 'waders' on.) And back to what this commentary was talking about; The McCain/Palin ticket is an openly bigotted/racist ticket and is showing to the world America's dark underbelly goes further than just Bush/Cheney et.al. and in so doing is making it alright for other governments around the world to do the same things to their people. As in Ohio in 2004 the voting in JEB run Florida in 2000 was rigged in multipul ways from the outset and that Gore won the state by a 300+ vote margin and all this has been well documented, just not reported by the 'corporate owned' media. There... I had my little bit of say on this matter now I'll put my foot back in my mouth muffle muff...

Perhaps I'm linguistically challenged, or something, but in my day we used to call people like McCain - not "that one", but "that prick".
Pricks, as we all know, usually end up in positions of power.
Did Obama refer to McCain, as the "honorable senator"? I hope not, but if yes, it must have been the most difficult two words of his entire career.
Posted by canadiankid at 10/09/2008 @ 12:24am
McCain is portraying Obama as a naive elitist with little experience. And he is correct to a certain degree. But Obama's willingness to absorb information, synthesize and analyze, give erudite answers to queries and remain calm despite the storm leads me to believe that he IS prepared to take over as President. He appears intelligent enough to choose a staff that will support him and his ideologies but not be afraid to tell him when he is wrong. And he is perhaps naive enough to believe that we can correct all the bs that the Republicans have given us over the last 8 years! He does not strike me as a man who will throw a tantrum a la McCain if he doesnt get his way.And he is a "congenial" friend and adversary! McCain is an admirable man who endured great pain and suffering for his country. But that does not give him the right to be a President. His bellicose nature is NOT suited for this country at this time. Cooler heads are needed. And I for one will choose "that one" over McCain when that important Tuesday comes...
Posted by vinsan at 10/09/2008 @ 12:43am
McCain is being true to his bully-on-the-playground persona. Frat-boy, sophomoric...fear mongering. He is the Mr. Wilson to Barack's Dennis. Let him keep it up because most of us not want Mr. Wilson as our leader.
I say leader because we need more than a figurehead good ole boy, have a drink with him guy. We want intellectual, worldly solid leader to take us out of the muck the ole boys we have had put us for 8 years.

It would be nice if The Nation would do a definitive story on the wingers and why they feel it necessary to spew hatred.
For the past 8 years, at the national level, the party they love has been in power, and with disastrous results. But all this time they and their radio Goebbels impersonators, Rush Limburger et al, have been ranting and raving at us as though we progressives had been peeing in their swimming pools and laughing at their NASCAR jackets.
Even when they're on top, they're paranoid and nasty. Now that they're about to be relegated to the dustbin of history (we hope), what can we expect of them? That they will come after our leaders with their squirrel guns blazing?
Seriously, these people need looking into, and they're never going to volunteer to have a psychiatrist do that. Let's get a brave journalist or two to do it.

elcomputo posted: It would be nice if The Nation would do a definitive story on the wingers and why they feel it necessary to spew hatred
Why is it necessary? Because they are fearful. Fear is the root of anger, and for the last 8 years, fear has been the mantra of the RNC. yes America is threatened by terrorists - homegrown terrorists -who have demonized anyone and anything that they have deemed as "other". They have tapped into the fear in the American culture that perhaps we really aren't all "that" in the world - and have solidified and codified the rational "if you're not with us, you're unAmerican"; during the 60s the chant was "My country love it or leave it, My country right or wrong" but the real underlying mantra was "either agree with me or get out" - From my perspective as a low rung retail worker, I find it disheartening and very sad to watch the RNC rallies and I hear the echoes of the 1930s rallies in Germany, the same sound and fury and fear in those rallies echoes mightily throughout the Joe Six Pack rallies emceed by Palin. And no one blinks an eye - it's politics as usual. Really? When did Seig Heil become our slogan? When did rights of the mob supercede the rights of the individual? When did we decide the only Right worth keeping was the Right to Bear Arms? When did we decide the USA meant tyranny and oppression? When? On the day we elected fear as the overriding raison d'etre for all things political.

"That one," and refer to Obama as "boy." Then, Obama could call McCain "Massa John." Ah! Good times on the old plantation. Posted by Tunnelrat at 10/08/2008 @ 10:04pm |
Yeah! God I have been waiting for that slip! too bad Trent Lott isn't on the stump with Gramps, it would be just a matter of time before one of the White Dudes let slip with that "boy", and it would be landslide city.

Only repeatin' what I hear.
The other thing that causes this phenomenon, along with voting for an African American president, is marijuana use. apparently, according to congressional testimony given by upstanding civic leaders, that plant has a detrimental effect on the minority mind ...According to the same people that worn me of communism, liberal thoughts, socialism, gun control regulation, all around regulation of business, sexual freedom, universal healthcare.
Just assimilating the right wing propaganda, Abel. Ask GupDog, he has lots of it to share.

I don't care how the media tries to forgive "the senile old senator", for "that one", this one is clearly arrogant and the tone that is the beginning of a racist and xenophobic attitude.

mccain's behavior indicates he can not work across the isle he is a divider not a uniter. if he can not give the common courtsey of respect in public i can imagine what he feels in private. mccain is dangerous and out of control
