Palin the Librarian

posted by Ari Berman on 09/10/2008 @ 11:12am

Brian Ross of ABC News did a great report last night on how Sarah Palin tried to ban books and fired the town librarian when she was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska.

Here are the most relevant sections:

ROSS: Around the time Palin became mayor, [Palin's] church and other conservative Christians began to focus on certain books available in local stores and in the town library, including one called "Go Ask Alice," and another one written by a local pastor, Howard Bess, called "Pastor, I am Gay."

BESS: This whole thing of controlling, you know, information, censorship, yeah. That's a part of the scene.

ROSS: Not long after taking office, Palin raised the issue at a city council meeting of how books might be banned according to news accounts and a local resident, a Democrat, who was there.

ANNE KILKENNY: Mayor Palin asked the librarian, what is your response if I ask you to remove some books from the collection of the Wasilla Public Library?

ROSS: The Wasilla librarian, Mary Ellen Edmonds, the then president of the Alaska Library Association, responded with only a short hesitation.

KILKENNY: The librarian took a deep breath and said, the books in the collection were purchased in accordance with national standards and professional guidelines, and I would absolutely not allow you to remove any books from the collection.

"A few weeks after the council meeting, the mayor fired the librarian, although she was reinstated after a community uproar," Ross reported. "The Wasilla librarian, Mary Ellen Edmonds, left two years later, and according to friends, because it was just too hard working for Sarah Palin."

  1. Christ, people...you've got to F*(^%(*)& kidding!!!!

Obama said McCain's lies are like "putting lipstick on a pig"....

I would add Palin is full of bologna, with her pork and earmarks to make any respectable governor hide in shame....her fifty million in pork over four years for her tiny town is disgraceful and her illegal firing, trip taking, etc etc etc...is shameful!!!!!while now saying pork is bad.......

If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, it most likely is a f*()^)& duck!!!! palin is a f*&(%% fowl

McCain told his wife to strip naked at a recent biker's rally and offered her up for taking...insults her regularly, started dating cindy BEFORE getting divorced from his ex-wife, calling it one of his "most miserable failings"....it is STILL ADULTERY.....and the shameful reason he divorced his wife was she was in a wreck, no longer a trophy wife, AND

mccain used THE SAME LIPSTICK COMMENT EIGHT MONTHS AGO REFERRING TO HILLARY...

How in the hell does he think attacking Obama now after SAYING THE SAME EXACT THING will attrack hillary supporters????

    Are Americans REALLY THAT STUPID????

    SERIOUSLY???????

Your can put your boots in the oven, but that don't make 'em biscuits....

No I AM NOT DISGRACING PALIN WEARING BOOTS WHILE SHOOTING MOOSE FROM PLANES, WHICH SHE ADMITS DOING....

You can't throw the baby out with the bathwater.....

DOES NOT MEAN YOU SHOULD BAN ABORTIONS FOR RAPE OR INCEST OR CRAP ON THE WORLD BECAUSE YOUR EVANGELIC PREACHER OF PALIN PREACHES END TIMES EVERY SERMON!!!!!

    Etc, etc. etc, etc....

NEOCONS ARE ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN TRYING TO FORCE END TIMES ON US and then OBAMA IS SCARY??????

THE CHOICE IS BLACK AND WHITE: OBAMA AND BIDEN!!!

NOT DUMB AND DUMBER: MCSAME AND STALIN...

    NO OFFENSE TO STALIN.....

  2. We can say for certain that no book was ever banned. Nor is there any record that Palin initiated a formal process to censor any books.

  3. lvliberty-Both sides do this sort of thing every four years so it would be silly to try and make more out of it than that.Like the rest of us,you know very little about Palin and don't know much about all of these "scandals"to claim that it's all a lie.You are, like all partisan people, looking at whatever makes your side look good and ignoring whatever doesn't.That's partisan politics.

  4. From their own standpoint, Palin & her ilk, if worried about questionable ideas & language in the local library, should be equally concerned with their children's activity in community backyards. If instruction is tenuous, these kids might confuse dog turds with silly putty. Live your own lives right wingers & be satisfied with your skewed school systems. Leave the libraries alone.

  5. Happy-The vast majority of people on the left are ordinary people, just like the right. The one thing that I have discovered since coming out of the mountains is that the left has a wide variety of views,as is obvious even on here, but the modern right all sound like Rush, with few exceptions. What that means is that "the left" does not have the views about voters that you claim and would have a wide variety of views on the subject.

    LVL,

The point is SHE TRIED to ban library books but got push back from the librarian.

Now we need to know why Palin objects to people reading "Go Ask Alice," and "Pastor, I am Gay"?

Even if "she" disagreed with the author of these books, that does not give her a right to prevent others from reading the material! IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T READ IT!!!

This sort of intolerant mindset concerning the views of those she disagrees means she does not have the temperament to be president and should therefore be rejected as a vice presidential candidate.

If some "liberal" mayor TRIED to ban some Christian books you like, you would be up in arms, so now that the shoe is on the other foot, where is your outrage?

  9. Happy-I would,of course, deny that the left holds that view because there is no evidence of it which is why you stated it as an opinion that you did not back up with facts and your view that I am the left shows that you, either, have difficulty understanding what you read or don't know what the left is.I am about as ordinary as a person can get and have never tried to connect with the leftist ideologues and have confronted them on their views of Israel and have stated that I'm pro God, anti abortion, anti gun control, pro death penalty, and prefer small government with few laws.Someone who is trying to connect with the left would,of course, not come on here expressing such views, as I have done. The fact that I have found the modern GOP lacking has put me in a position where I'm willing the give the left a shot at it,but that does not make me "the left".

  12. "McCain pledged to work for peace based on "the transformative ideals on which we were founded." Tolerance and democracy require freedom of speech and the press, but while mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, Palin inquired of the local librarian how to go about banning books that some of her constituents thought contained inappropriate language. She tried to fire the librarian for defying her. Book banning is common to fundamentalisms around the world, and the mind-set Palin displayed did not differ from that of the Hamas minister of education in the Palestinian government who banned a book of Palestinian folk tales for its sexually explicit language. In contrast, Thomas Jefferson wrote, 'Our liberty cannot be guarded but by the freedom of the press, nor that be limited without danger of losing it.'"

  13. "Palin argued when running for governor that creationism should be taught in public schools, at taxpayers' expense, alongside real science. Antipathy to Darwin for providing an alternative to the creation stories of the Bible and the Quran has also become a feature of Muslim fundamentalism. Saudi Arabia prohibits the study, even in universities, of evolution, Freud and Marx. Malaysia has banned a translation of "The Origin of the Species." Likewise, fundamentalists in Turkey have pressured the government to teach creationism in the public schools. McCain has praised Turkey as an anchor of democracy in the region, but Turkey's secular traditions are under severe pressure from fundamentalists in that country. McCain does them no favors by choosing a running mate who wishes to destroy the First Amendment's establishment clause, which forbids the state to give official support to any particular theology. Turkish religious activists would thereby be enabled to cite an American precedent for their own quest to put religion back at the center of Ankara's public and foreign policies."

keep hitting her on this stuff. hit her on her ideology and theology.

its time to fight back dirty - with dirty truth like this. show whats behind the smile and face - a scary, rightwing, fundamentalist, vendetta holding, christofascist.

now, obama - also speak about the manufactured rightwing outrage about your "pig with lipstick" remark. you must attack...attack not only mrs. palin, but the entire rightwing propaganda network, including drudge and mr. murdoch's and mr. black's tabloid propaganda rags.

use your communication skills to put out the message and fight the smears against you while continueing to dig and insinuate what appears to be the truth - that palin is a rightwing funamentalist wolf-in-sheeps-clothing who is DANGEROUS for america.

oh..gee! was that reference about clothing sexist????

go after that BS hypersensitivity thing too. is her gender going to be a blanket excuse to whine and complain every time anybody says anything unflattering about her? is that what the women's movement is all about? for that matter, compare how that rightwing has vicioused hillary clinton in the past to this silliness...

hit hard - through some dirt in their faces - there's plenty of it and unlike the republican crap - this is real.

fight, barack and joe. don't be afraid. if you ignore it and just play the high road you will regret it and lose like so many other dems. if you fight and pound them with the ugly truth, at least you will have tried.

  19. This is from Wiki on one of the books Palin wanted banned:

"Go Ask Alice is a controversial 1971 book about drug abuse that is considered a classic of American young adult literature. The book purports to be the actual diary of an anonymous teenage girl who died of a drug overdose in the late 1960s and is therefore presented as a testimony against drug use. Alice is not the protagonist's name; the diarist's name is never given in the book. A woman named Alice is mentioned briefly in one entry; she is a fellow addict the diarist meets on the street. Despite this, reviewers generally refer to the diarist as "Alice" for the sake of convenience."

The book appears to be a realistic account of a teen struggling with drug abuse. WHY WOULD SARAH WANT TO BAN THIS?

LL and his ilk would LOVE to ban books and anything that conflicted with their rightwing, fundamentalist version of christianity.

evolution, sexual themes, anything uncomplimentary to his version of christianity...

The firing of the librarian after she demurred on the basis that Palin didn't fee she had the other's support isn't a very credible coincidence. Neither is the idea of her being rehired following public protests.

no - dems have tried to ignore and assume others would forget or dismiss - not effective in this situation.

dems need th HIT AND HIT AND HIT - AND IF THEY KNOCK HER DOWN - KICK AND KICK AND KICK HER...

hit hard and don't stop - hit with truth and hit on her religion, record, and personal demeanor - make people look at her and fear her.

and if everytime we hit, they boohoo and cry "unfair" or "sexism"...

eventually they will start sounding wimpy and bullshitty and pathetic. pull no punches.

as a side benefit, mccain will appear increasingly weak and marginalised himself. it will start to look like he is meaningless and unable to win without pulling some kind of gimmick.

The ENTIRE Palin candidacy is based on GOP hypocrisy.

    Among several points-

    1. McCain's original campaign (Pre-Palin) was based on "experience"...he picks Palin with a year as Gov and a mayorship and suddenly the campaign is about "reform and change".

    2. They bring up Jeremiah Wright....but now claim it's "no big deal" that Palin's ministers from Kalinin to Kroon are just as wacky and "God will strike down America".

    3. They bring up a casual friendship with Bill Ayers.....but try to make TODD PALIN's membership in a separatist group as "nothing to it".

    4. They attacked Hillary's call for a windfall profits tax on Big Oil as "more Hillary socialism".....but oddly forget Palin supported and PASSED a similar measure in Alaska.

    5. Due to OBVIOUS un-popularity of such moves to the general public, LVLIB is forced to DENY that Palin attempted to remove books from a library....a move that LVLIB would otherwise support!

    6. They attempt this LUDICRIOUS "Obama called Palin a pig" charge...when it's clear from the FULL text that he was talking about McCain's policies...

and IGNORE that McCain used the EXACT SAME PHRASE a year ago to describe Hillary's health care plan....did McCain call HRC a pig?!??!!?

Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno."

    – Sen. John McCain, speaking to a Republican dinner, June 1998.

Not only is McCain's hideous attempt at humor about 10 times more tasteless than what Shuster said (as the David Corn article notes, newspapers that reported on the joke wouldn't even print it), but while the newsman's ill-conceived comment was at least spontaneous, McCain's joke was a prepared remark to a public audience.

Maybe McCain has more in common with Limbaugh than Rush thinks. The straight talk express should be ashamed of himself.

What's odd is, that these guys are so fired up...for somebody who'll be less than Quayle when it comes to real power in a McCain Presidency.

You think he's going to put her in charge of a major policy move...when she has no support except the GOP base and no experience in Washington?

Or is it more likely he'll send her down to NASA to talk about "Mars landings"...or meet with nice, safe foreign leaders/nations like Brazil or Australia?....or send her to schools to promote the "McCain Education Plan" and spell "pototoe"?

  84. THE REAL JOHN MCCAIN

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran's Foreign Ministry has condemned remarks by Republican presidential candidate John McCain that exporting cigarettes could be a way of killing Iranians.

The state-owned English language IRAN daily has quoted ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini denouncing the remarks as "inappropriate" and describing McCain's attitude as "regretful."

Last week, McCain was asked about an Associated Press report that the U.S. exported $158 million worth of cigarettes to Iran during the Bush administration in spite of restrictions on U.S. imports.

"Maybe that's a way of killing them," McCain said. He then said that he was joking.

Mayor Palin: A Rough Record Tuesday, Sep. 02, 2008 By NATHAN THORNBURGH / WASILLA, ALASKA

"At some point in those fractious first days, Palin told the department heads they needed her permission to talk to reporters. "She put a gag order on those people, something that you'd expect to find in the big city, not here," says Naegele. "She flew in there like a big-city gal, which she's not. It was a strange time, and [the Frontiersman] came out very harshly against her."

Stein says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. "She asked the library how she could go about banning books," he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. "The librarian was aghast." That woman, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn't be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving "full support" to the mayor."

Palin's church at the time, the Assembly of God, had been pushing for the removal a book called "Pastor I Am Gay" from local bookstores, according to the book's author Pastor Howard Bess, of the Church of the Covenant in nearby Palmer, Alaska.

"And she was one of them," said Bess, "this whole thing of controlling information, censorship, that's part of the scene," said Bess.

Thats B.S. Yes she did try to ban books by posing the question to the librarian in the first place. Then when the librarian told her she would not allow it, Palin fired her. She was reinstated a short time later due to public outcry and quit 2 years later saying that she could not continue to work for the mayor because it was to difficult. Quit the crap we know what the story is.

And NO....YOU are claiming that Obama is as dumb as Bush, by suggesting that in front of HUNDREDS of people and the world-wide MEDIA, he'd make a "obvious" sexist remark like an idiot.

YOU want us to believe Obama is stupid AND sexist...and it makes no sense and has no logic.

Now, you saying that your "best scenario" is for John McCain to die, so that Palin can become President IS easy to understand and requires no creative interpretation.

The dems back the fairness doctrine as a result of a corporate monopoly in the AM and FM radio world that pushes propaganda through the likes of Ingraham, Limbaugh, Hannity, and Oreilly. I dont know any libraries that are that one sided. The idea that commercialism will decide what the radio market wants is baloney because of CBS and Clearchannel's control of the radio airwaves. Air america was not on in major cities (DC, where I lived for one) and Al Franken suprisingly sucked on the radio. I guess the point, if I have one, is that you have taken Fairness Doctrine(which i dont particularly like either) and made it the same as banning books. 158. Darin, maybe you can answer yet another question that has gone unanswered...

Why is it that the party that has run under the mantra "Family Values" for 16 years... does not want to discuss their VP candidates family?

why is it that the anti-homosexual crowd will vote for the VP with a lesbian daughter, and the anti-teen sex crowd will vote for the VP with a pregnant teen daughter? Why is the THEORY of Family Values integral to their electioneering, but the REALITY of the candidates families is off limits?

    Posted by crabwalk at 09/10/2008 @ 4:16pm

  159. While I would have never voted for McCain I was ready to cast my vote for a third party (or not vote at all for that matter), his pick of a religious fundamentalist immediately swung my vote to Obama.

    Good job Johnny!

CRAB, you don't understand...but I'm sure Darin will explain it to us...

all those times, before Palin was picked, when Obama used the term "put lipstick on a pig"?...

he CLAIRVOYENTLY KNEW that McCain was going to pick a woman....and as the raging sexist that he is (and monumental idiot who gives voice to that sexism in public)...

he was actually attacking poor Sarah INTO THE FUTURE!!!!!

See? Despite being a total idiot and a monumental misogynist....Obama KNOWS THE FUTURE!!!!!!

To deny it is to deny reality...as I'm sure Darin will say....HEY! Maybe I'm clairvoyant too!

Gee...hope I never said "lipstick on a pig"...hate for my wife to find out how I somehow "hated Sarah Palin and all women" in the past!!?!?!?!

    Posted by Maskdelta at 09/10/2008 @ 4:44pm

  165. Odd....I just put the blathering "LibZ" on "ignore" and I lost half the posts .

And I just watched the "pig" thing on YouTube ....what a lot of fricking senseless whiners the GOP are. It was clearly focussed on McCain's policies being rebranded and therefore valid cliche. If the GOP assumes Palin's a pig, that 's their problem.

And you make up the top 10% of the country. The other 90% is getting their taxes cut.

    Posted by Cccomfo1 at 09/10/2008 @ 5:33pm

  169. I think LVL is right on this one. The American Library Association has a librarian Code of Ethics that includes, "We uphold the principles of intellectual freedom and resist all efforts to censor library resources."

In most circumstances, if I were running a small town's public library, I would construe such questions as an opportunity to go on record, and I wouldn't find them particularly disturbing.

The only reason it comes across as problematic is the set-up that the writer does in this article - and other people are doing elsewhere - that states that censorship was her motivation. That's speculation.

Yet, there is something problematic here. The part I find disturbing comes from the Factcheck.org article. The article claims that the reason she asked for the resignation of all department heads was because she was administrating a "loyalty test". I don't think I want a person that thinks that kind of behavior is appropriate in an office at the highest levels of the federal government.

"Putting lipstick on a pig" is a fairly standard expression. Reason was kind enough to review how it was used in the past by Republicans:

Dick Cheney: "John Kerry is trying every which way to cover up his record of weakness on national defense. But he can't do it. It won't work. As we like to say in Wyoming, you can put all the lipstick you want on that pig, but at the end of the day, it's still a pig."

Fred Thompson: "He dishes corn pone with a master's touch. "You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig"; "that dog don't hunt"; Congressional efforts to give amnesty to illegal immigrants are "like selling a horse twice."

Tom Tancredo: "I am disappointed but not surprised that the president has once again chosen to trot out this same old pig, albeit one with a slightly new shade of lipstick."

John McCain: "When asked about Mrs. Clinton his speech, he said her proposal was "eerily" similar to the plan she came up with in 1993, when she headed a health care reorganization effort during her husband's administration. "I think they put some lipstick on a pig," he said, "but it's still a pig."

Most people in management can figure out whether someone is onboard without having to play B.S. games like asking everyone at a certain level for their resignation. Such actions reek of incompetence.

Thought experiment: Name how many times this happened to you in your professional career. In your friends professional careers? How about the city you live in when a new mayor is elected?

It doesn't happen. You know why? Because it's a stupid move - particularly if you don't have other qualified people to perform those functions, as invariably you wouldn't in a small community in Alaska.

The simple fact is the video and the context don't support your assertions that it was aimed at Palin. In your hypothetical example, if McCain would have done the same thing, it would be exactly the same - blown out of proportion for political ends, but not meant as it was spun. Check the video yourself.

I stated my preference if I had to choose between the two. Luckily, I don't have to choose only between those two. I can do any number of things ranging from not voting to voting third party. In any case, my state has already decided for me, just as the respective parties have chosen my candidates for me. And winner take all means there's no one representing my interests.

    Posted by SoHAPPY at 09/10/2008 @ 7:18pm

Only few EVPs get replaced when a new CEO is brought in. Any CEO that tried to ask for the resignation of all of them would find themselves without a job, post haste.

I'll also point out that local government doesn't have "political appointees". The chief of police is typically someone that has the job because s/he knows police work. Or the library director knows how to run a library. Secretary of State is a policy position. Library Director isn't.

    Posted by Darin_the_Troll at 09/10/2008 @ 7:58pm

Could he be pausing for dramatic effect, to emphasize the fact McCann is continuing Bush policies - and pretending that someone as establishment as himself is going to bring "change"? Or is that too far out there?

"I promise to run up huge deficits, send thousands off to die in a needless war, and use the constitution to line my parrot cage".
