Last week, while the media focused almost obsessively on the DNC's spectacle in Denver, the country's most influential conservatives met quietly at a hotel in downtown Minneapolis to get to know Sarah Palin. The assembled were members of the Council for National Policy, an ultra-secretive cabal that networks wealthy right-wing donors together with top conservative operatives to plan long-term movement strategy.
CNP members have included Tony Perkins, James Dobson, Grover Norquist, Tim LaHaye and Paul Weyrich. At a secret 2000 meeting of the CNP, George W. Bush promised to nominate only pro-life judges; in 2004, then-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist told the group, "The destiny of the nation is on the shoulders of the conservative movement." This year, thanks to Sarah Palin's selection, the movement may have finally aligned itself behind the campaign of John McCain.
Though Dobson and Perkins reportedly attended the recent CNP meeting in Minneapolis, a full roster of guests would be nearly impossible to require. The CNP deliberately operates below the radar, going to excessive lengths to obscure its activities. According to official CNP policy, "The media should not know when or where we meet or who takes part in our programs before or after a meeting." Thus the CNP's Minneapolis gathering was free of reporters.
I learned of the get-together only through an online commentary by one of its attendees, top Dobson/Focus on the Family flack Tom Minnery. (Watch it here) Minnery described the mood as CNP members watched Palin accept her selection as John McCain's Vice Presidential pick. "I was standing in the back of a ballroom filled with largely Republicans who were hoping against hope that something would put excitement back into this campaign," Minnery said. "And I have to tell you, that speech by Alaska Governor Sarah Palin -- people were on their seats applauding, cheering, yelling... That room in Minneapolis watching on the television screen was electrified. I have not seen anything like it in a long time."
Minnery added that his boss, Dobson, has yearned for a conservative female leader like Margaret Thatcher to emerge on the American scene. And while Palin is no Thatcher, "she has not rejected the feminine side of who she is, so for that reason, she will be attractive to conservative voters."
The members of the Council for National Policy are the hidden hand behind McCain's Palin pick. With her selection, the Republican nominee is suddenly -- and unexpectedly -- assured of the support of a movement that once opposed his candidacy with all its might. Case in point: while Dobson once said he could "never" vote for McCain, he issued a statement last week hailing Palin as an "outstanding" choice. If Dobson's enthusiasm for Palin is any indication, he may soon emerge from his bunker in Colorado Springs to endorse McCain, providing the Republican nominee with the backing of the Christian right's single most influential figure.

I noted that the Prince family was involved in this group, and I would not be too surprised if the head of Blackwater might now be on the board. Certainly, they would be represented by family members. It would be interesting to know if they had any connections with defense contractors or multinational corporations. With all this push toward government contracts for private companies, these people may be influencing intelligence agencies and the Defense Department. Is this the source of the Rose or multi hued Revolutions in Eastern Europe and the Middle East? Maybe Putin was right?
Posted by P. J. Casey at 09/01/2008 @ 09:47am
Maybe the CNP needs to be vetted, as their Palin "vetting" was way off base and will ultimately sink the McCain ticket.
You simply can't put a "government reformer" on the ticket who abuses her power in office to pursue petty family vendettas.
Palin is a hypocrite and a lightweight, and pretty soon that will be clear to the vast majority of voters.

I have news for Mrs. Stepford. I don't dislike Sarah Palin because she is a women. I just don't like her politics. she just happens to be a far right nut case. This gal is going to be one door down from the nuclear trigger. A small town mayor and a powerless governor? gimme a break. All this so the "ameners" can overturn Roe v Wade. Are you kidding me? HAP,
Are you suggesting that Obama was one of the two Illinois government officials that appealed to the State Department to get Auchi's visa restored?
If not, you are grasping at straws, looking for a way to smear Obama as revenge for McCains stupid pick of a woman who does not respect the limits of government authority and thinks it is OK to use government power to pursue personal family vendettas against ex-husbands.
Posted by Metteyya at 09/01/2008 @ 10:31am
>>>As a result, the official said, Palin will be asked to spend at least 80 per cent of her time raising money between now and the election.<<<
80% of her time OUT-OF-SIGHT (out-of-mind)?
Not a chance, HAP!
Palin will not be able to hide from this. She is a hypocrite of the first order who got up on the stage with John McCain and told America how she is going to come to Washington and reform government.
How can a sitting governor of Alaska who thinks it is OK to use her government position to pursue personal petty family vendettas going to "reform" government?
America doesn't need or want the kind of government reform Palin would deliver, as we already have a number of bozos in government that think it is OK to fire government officials because of their partisan beliefs, and to top this off with people who think its OK to fire people for personal family vendettas is just TOO MUCH OF THE WRONG KIND OF REFORM.

If McCain gets out of line (i.e. fails to appoint abortion abolitionists and to continue gutting/defanging the Public Broadcasting Service, Environmental Protection Agency, Food and Drug Administration, and Occupational Safety and Health Agency) I suspect he will suffer a steep decline in health that will leave Mrs. Palin -- someone who we can all easily see is a real red-blooded American) in charge so that we can avert setbacks in the effort to outlaw fetus killing and in our efforts to maximize American's freedom and our domination of global commerce.
In addition to the above... Welcome to the GOP tent, Hillary supporters! Now let's begin the talk about "women's rights" vs killing unborn children. Should this really be an issue, or are supporters of abortion just trying to get us to abandon our humanity and willingness to protect those who cannot protect themselves? It's a valid debate and I challenge you to make a sensible, humane argument.

Governor Sarah Palin State of Alaska P.O. Box 110001 Juneau, AK 99811-0001
Dear Governor Palin:
As scientists and other wildlife professionals , we urge you to strengthen the application of science-based wildlife management to sound policy decisions, especially for those Alaska programs related to predator control. We are concerned with potential problems of managing and conserving large mammalian carnivores and their ungulate prey resulting from recent approval of predator control programs designed to severely reduce populations of gray wolves, black bears and brown bears. We strongly urge the State of Alaska to gather data necessary to justify, implement, monitor and evaluate these programs so that management practices will ensure sustained populations of both predators and prey.

Hi Mr Happy,
I gotta say I admire your consistency in waving the conservative flag here on the Nation blog. Certainly more interesting for you than preaching to the converted over at the Weekly Standard. Wrong though you mostly are.
Question for you: How's the campaign going to deal with the public record that shows Governor Palin only shut down the Bridge to Nowhere when it became obvious the feds weren't going to pony up the bux.
Her words, which make a liar out of her's and McCain's claim that she stopped the bridge:
'People across the nation struggle with the idea of building a bridge because they've been under these misperceptions about the bridge and the purpose,' said Palin, who described the link as the Ketchikan area's potential for expansion and growth. Palin said Alaska's congressional delegation worked hard to obtain funding for the bridge as part of a package deal and that she 'would not stand in the way of the progress toward that bridge.'" Ketchikan Daily News on August 8, 2006,
'We need to come to the defense of Southeast Alaska when proposals are on the table like the bridge and not allow the spinmeisters to turn this project or any other into something that's so negative,' Palin said.
So she seems very happy to play the Ted Stevens game of suck-as-much-as-you-can-from-the-feds, until the wind blows the other way--then she's a reformer.
She was picked because she is an ideologue and a woman and the boys with the checkbooks think she might appeal to the country and keep the gravy train of taxpayer dollars borrowed from future generations rolling right along. Not Presidential material.

I wonder if they are from different fathers? If we are to get a meaningful paternity test of whether Sarah Palin's last child is really Bristol's, then we need to know who is the father of BOTH pregnancies, as the second (current) pregnancy may be from a different guy than the first.

No I read that all perfectly fine. My point is it has been brought up throughly. You think when the point was brought up that SOMEONE didn't investigate it? Watergate was hidden until someone brought it out. This wasn't hidden. He DIRECTLY addressed it. It is there for investigation. You don't want it because you are looking out for the country, you want to have this election concentrated on non-issues. This HAS been investigated. The reason it is not an issue is because there is nothing to talk about. The press don't print articles saying there is nothing to talk about.

Don't get carried away with how much money the conservatives have said they raised ... the reality is always a bit far from the truth.
So ... Tom Delay placed his hand on Palin and gave his blessings?
The old saying "people in glasses houses shouldn't throw stones." may apply with Palin.
The "trailer trash" affair between her sister and brother-in-law has to be "vetted" out I would suppose.
Now a 17 year old pregnant daughter? Ha. I was wondering during Palin's speech whose baby that was. Now we know why the 17 year old was carrying it ... because she is carrying one of her own. Nice cover up!!
But really, I don't harbor ill feelings towards this little girl, only the hypocracy of people like Palin.
Did the people of Alaska know about this?
I believe that how a Gov., Pres. and/or VP manage their own lives and family's are of interest.
Certainly interesting when that candidate would like to regulate mine by passing laws that impact my life's choices.
I believe that this is just the beginning of more interesting news in the days to come and expect that Palin will pull out before the end of Oct.
The investagation in Alaska is now raising new questions.

I am an enthusiastic supporter of Barack Obama, but I am NOT part of his campaign staff. My thoughts and words are my own, and I will not allow ANYONE to dictate to me what I should think, what I should feel, or what I should express to others on this board or anywhere else.
If I think Sarah Palin has a character question, then I will express this unfettered.
It is unfortunate that Sarah has decided to make her family an issue in all of this, but she had a choice of whether to send those emails and staff (and husband Todd) to lean on the public safety commissioner to pursue a personal family vendetta. She also had a choice of whether to come clean with the public and admit to her daughter's pregnancy when it "first" came up last year when she took Bristol out of school for 8 months.
Sarah Palin made the wrong choices and decided to make her family a political issue in assessing her own character and fitness for higher office, so it should be no surprise when others make them an issue as well.

McCain's choice of Palin and the "cabal's" vetting of it only serve to hammer home McCain's desperation, the catastrophically delusional nature of the Christian Right, and the utter destruction wrought on the Republican Party in the last eight years as the party collapses into a pile of rubble before our eyes.
Add-in the arrival of a hurricane to throw the GOP Convention into complete chaos and the effect is positively hallucinogenic.

This is a call for all Obama supporters to ignore the 72 year old war hawk and his laughably inexperienced side kick from Alaska. Do not give the conservative media what it wants; do not play into the hands of the hardcore right. Sarah Palin is simply put part of a carefully planned political strategy to lure Democrats into saying something stupid or arrogant about a mother who, regardless of what the liberal community might think or say about her, will nonetheless be heavily supported by the Christian evangelical block of the Republican party. This is inescapable fact. Any attempts to tear down this obviously underqualified and potentially reckless choice for Vice Presidential candidate with will do a few things which are counterproductive to our cause: Even giving Sarah Palin the time of day will: 1) Envigorate the right, encouraging more conservative Republicans (who's minds are already made up about Barack Obama and therefore probably won't change about McCain/Palin) to turnout and vote 2) Open the door to negative attacks on Obama, further highlighting Republican talking points 3) Show a disregard for the politics of hope, undercutting our movement for change's mantra of abandoning the political bickering and negative ways of the past And probably most importantly: 4) Interfere with what is her's and McCain's inevitable collapse. The work is already done: America is ready for change and it won't come from the direction of McCain/Palin. Everyone knows this already. And negative attacks against a governor from one of the most sparsely populated states in the Union won't help us achieve our goal, which has been and should always be: To elect Barack Obama the President of the United States because he will make a great President. Let us focus on why.

The Palin chapter will make for dizzying reading in the campaign book(s) being written, and not much more than that.
The Palin pathos offers only 1 danger to the Dems, in distracting attention from the real issues, the disastrous effects of 8 years of GOP incompetence & corruption.
But while the national race is over, the real Q is will the Dem majorities in the house & senate be large enough to enable the Dems to govern without GOP blackmail & sabotage?
Distracting from this will eat up much GOP money & time, especially on the networks, for the next 10 weeks.
This has to be countered with reality, dear Nation editors & writers.

Do the Dems and the loons here REALLY want to examine the sexual activity of a 17 year old, blame the results on some perceived character flaw of the mother... and ignore Obamas "heritage"?....Really? Man, you guys are realy rattled....and should be....and you should be ashamed. Posted by JOMAMMA at 09/02/2008 @ 12:25am
Uhhh. Can you not see the difference between a child being responsible for their parents activities rather than a parent being held responsible for their child? If you can't see the difference you truly are lost to partisanship. You are talking about a parent who does not want to tach sex education but has a 17 year old pregnant daughter. Then you are talking about a man who has a loving family but a fathr who was an idiot. As people we don't get to choose or shape our parents. We do shape our children. You need to get your head out of your ass and stop looking at everything through such a partisan lens.

I'm somewhat sensitive to the word cabal, especially as applied to religious groups. It seems only fair to treat all groups equally, and so "Christian Cabal" is no more acceptable than "Muslim Cabal" or the infamous "Jewish Cabal." Saner terms such as "secretive group" strike me as less burdened.

before you get arrested by mcbush gestapo stormtroopers, remind minnesotans that they would be fine economically if they got 1/10th of the $50,000,000 of federal pork pal satan got for her tiny alaskan town (pop 6000)from 96 - 02 as mayor, it would seem to run counter current to mcbush's msg...but in gop, reality is whatever they twist it into being.....good luck, america

Folks hero or no hero "You can't fix stupid", Ron white, Comedy Channel. I just wish McCain and Palin would share the stuff they are smoking . My paper "The Bangor Daily News, O.K oxymoron, published a full front page color photo of Laura Bush and Cindy McCain. Now there are two candidates to be type cast for a remake of The Stepford Wives.

Laura Bush chimes in warning the Dems, but remained silent when the MSM and Republicans attack Michelle Obama with baseless propaganda! Nice job Laura! My daughters will learn of you as a liar and hypocrite, not just a first lady!

IMHO they think they're more important than they are. But everyone thinks that, don't they?

I will be both surprised and delighted if Sarah Palin is still on the Republican ticket come election day. Other than appealing to Christian fundamentalists, she brings almost nothing positive to the ticket and lots of negatives--more and more each day. It would appear that the standard Republican formula of nominating stuffed suits and then being able to win elections simply by controlling public perceptions may no longer work.

GET REAL, MAX,
If it's so secret a council how do YOU know about it? I'm sure thier Schutz Staffeln-like Security Police would be better than that.

I think you are oversensitive and misreading the intent of the use of the world 'cabal.' It was clearly meant to refer to a secretive group, and not an entire religion.
Definition of cabal from dictionary.com:
"A small GROUP OF SECRETIVE PLOTTERS, as against a government or person in authority."
Sounds like Max used it in its classic meaning here.

John McCain chose Palin because he needed someone good at changing diapers. His!

Keep joking. You overestimate the intelligence of the American Voter. Big Lie will win again, because Obama can't roll a strike. This nation's most dangerous enemies are now convened in St. Paul, Minnesota; Sieg Heiling the Geezer and Gidget with a Gun. McGain wins, and the USA will be a large third world dictatorship of the corporations.

PLEASE DO NOT MISS THE OPPORTUNITY to FULLY vet the Council for National Policy. More than your average Christian group. USE YOUR GOOGLE!
On the surface, Evangelical Christians like Tim LaHaye (Left Behind, covets Armageddon), Jerry Falwell (late), Pat Robertson, John Hagee, and the like.
But also Ollie North and architects of Operation Phoenix in Vietnam.
Also Gary North and Rushdoony who consider the US Constitution too liberal, and want Old Testament Law.
Another member and huge financial supporter is Rev Sun Myung Moon (the Moonies). Ironically, Moon argues that *HE* is Great Father and Jesus Christ will bow down at his feet. He says Jesus was a FAILURE. Moon was crowned King of Peace in the US Senate Dirksen Bldg by a host of Republicans. YouTube. Close to Japanese org crime and Korean CIA (KCIA), plus arms mfgs.
How can real Christians get behind this stench? Stealth.
Also tied in is Gen John Singlaub and the World Anti-Communist League, which was formed from the Korean CIA, surviving Japanese fascists and German Nazis, Chinese National fascists, and homespun US fascists. WACL worked with Latin American DEATH SQUADS in the 1980s, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and other places, including Guatemala where Gen. Rios Montt's mottos were to "carry a machine gun and a Bible", and "Kill a Priest a Day".
Where in the Gospels are there death squads and murdering priests and nuns?
Yet despite all this religious insanity, it's a big tent, so there's plenty of room for angry closet homos and meth addicts like Ted Haggard (Bush spirit'l adviser) and pedophiles like Tom Feeney, gays who are "cured" by a few weeks of prayer.
SOMEHOW, this cult considers these men GOOD Christians.
This is EXTREME fascism, beyond Bush, in a dress with a pretty smile.

I forgot to mention.
The World Anti-Communist League, a part of the CNP, also backed fascist anti-Castro Cuban terrorists in Miami and Latin Am. This includes people who strafed tourist beaches, numerous terror attacks, Orlando Bosch who shot a Spanish ship with a bazooka in a Florida harbor, and Luis Posada who shot a Cuban passenger jet filled with students and the fencing team out of the sky enroute to Venezuela, to tweak Castro. He said they were commie fencers.
By the way, both men were pardoned or protected by Bushes, George and Jeb.
WACL also involved in Operation Gladio bombings in Europe, for 40 years, blamed on the Left.
Terror File Online (or similar site) describes AL-QAEDA as the Middle East wing of the WACL.
This is probably accurate. It's plausible, because WACL was housed in the Heritage Foundation building along with AEI, in the 1980s when Heritage hosted no less than THREE mujahideen radical Islamist groups. And Al-Qaeda was born as an anti-communist terror group, meant to LURE the Soviets into their own quagmire, in Afghanistan.
In summary, a Christian Right, Armageddon-loving, Moonie, gay homophobe, terror group, all about the military and fighting terror, but linked to Al-Qaeda.
But Evangelical Dominionist Christians for the Rapture absolutely love it, because they say the correct WORDS.
