Sarah Palin, the largely unknown and unvetted Alaska Governor tapped as John McCain's running mate, spoke out today in response to blog and media rumors about her 17-year-old daughter's pregnancy. Palin, with her husband Todd, released this statement:
We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.
Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates.
The Times reports that McCain knew about the pregnancy, and apparently the campaign planned to either keep it a secret or disclose it later on down the road. The speed of this news, first reported by Reuters, was spurred by a diary posted on the liberal blog DailyKos, which speculated that Palin's daughter was pregnant and her mother faked a pregnancy to cover it up.

The GOP made a huge mistake when they made family values an issue because that made their families an issue..

Being a pregnant teenager is something I know quite alot about; I married at 16, and by the time I was 20, I was the mother of 3...the marriage ended in divorce. As the article stated, "Bristol made the DECISION to have her baby." And that is the point; every woman should have that choice! It is not about being eager to terminate a pregnancy, it's about being able to decide your own future according to your own unique circumstances...and not having supreme court justices make that decision for me!

These abstinence only people need to start to pay attention to what their own children are doing rather than concern themselves with what other peoples children are doing.

"Shotgun Decisions" and "Shotgun Weddings", what a fine example of a leader John McCain is showing himself to be. First he makes a "calculated" choice of a female running mate with "conservative values" and the "bona fides" of Erin Brockovich. Then she turns out to be too busy playing Governor to keep track of what her minor kids are up to. Looks like they're planning on breaking another "Glass ceiling" by holding the first "Shotgun Marriage" at the White House., something we can all share with the world and be very proud of. Christian values at their hypocritical finest. If that's an example John McCain's decision making skills, I am not comfortable with his finger being on the trigger of the "Nuclear Shotgun". Talk about someone with "ambition" to be the Pres.

that is just great, mcain has thumbed his nose at all americans . his choice of a woman who has never even been outside to country except to canada(her words) and who smokes pot, now has 5 mo. old pregnant 17 year old daughter, who i sympathize with, shows she was never there for her children , also while the rest of america is trying to instill right morals, and no drugs in their teenagers, mccain and palin are as immoral and uncaring about the future of this country as anyone can be. Plus i am sure that corruption investigation she under in alaska and 17 pregnant daughter speaks volumes about her ability to provide leadership in the world and restore our respectability aroound the world, plus horndog mccain knew about the pregnancy and was going to keep it a secret. Maybe they all got high together and had a swinging party. BY THE WAY, HAS ANYONE RUN ANY DNA TESTS ON PALIN'S 4 mo. old baby to see if it has any of mcvain's genes in it? that is the only thing that i can think of for choosing this party animal, immature, "kool" potsmoking creationist, because he wants to make sure any of his offspring will follow his lead and tell all americans to go to hell, if they cannot get us blown up first with anger and disrespect for our double standards around the world. I hate mcCain for doing this to America and her too, for even thinking she can come close to most american women with morals, values, education and truly caring about their kids and the kind of world they inherit and their kids too. McVain and her are worse than bushes and i did not think anything could be worse than that, but damn, Wrong again, they aren't even in office yet, and they already are counting on americans to be so stupid, as to not know when they have already said "f... you all!!!
Posted by sickened at 09/01/2008 @ 10:27am
Palin want people to respect their right to privacy? What planet is she on, that she is so uneducated, that she does not know, if she and mcvain are supposed to represent americans, every faucet of not only their lives, but everyone they know , will be investigated and researched because of national security interests, as it should be. When they make the decision to become public figures, their lives also become public knowledge and public has a right to know of any immorality, illegal activities and bad judgement . ....that is like saying, yeh, i want to lap up all the publicity, but only when it is favorable to them. .....tough , they are not entitled to pull a snowjob on american about what fine, upstanding qualities they have. nuff said!!!

How can you argue against government programs that promote condom use because you believe in abstinence before marriage and then create a family crises of a teenage pregnancy in your own family because of this political AND religious point of view?
This is about Palin's HYPOCRISY, which is not a small thing.

While it's unfortunate that Bristol Palin has an unplanned pregnancy, she and her family are at least making the best of it. Nothing says the girl must have an abortion, even if the father has tried pressuring her into one. The baby actually has good prospects in life.
This does raise the tragic issue of out-of-wedlock births. There's an epidemic in the US. For example, some 70% of all African-American babies are born to single mothers (56% of Hispanic babies and 22% of whites). There's a strong correlation between growing up in a single-parent household and emotional and behavioral disorders as well as poor school achievement. Children of single parents are also vastly over-represented among criminals and drug abusers.
Obviously, single-parenthood is bad for children, bad for parents, and bad for society. I would like to see Sarah Palin and other politicos address the issue more systematically.

BRISTOL?
KARMA, KARMA, KARMA.
Environmentalists bristle over rumor of lifting ban on Bristol Bay drilling
by Margaret Bauman, Alaska Journal of Commerce November 29th, 2006
Word spread like wildfire through Alaska's environmental community Tuesday of alleged Bush administration plans to lift a presidential moratorium on offshore oil and gas exploration in the North Aleutian Basin.
The area includes the commercial fishing grounds of Bristol Bay, described by Rick Steiner, a professor with the University of Alaska's marine advisory program, as "THE BREADBASKET OF ENTIRE BERING SEA."
Reports circulating through environmental groups were that Alaska Governor-elect Sarah Palin, as well as Alaska's congressional delegation, had "signed off" on the action, Steiner said.
Curtis Smith, press secretary for incoming Gov. Sarah Palin, said he could not confirm Palin's specific actions regarding plans to lift the moratorium.
Smith said that in the past PALIN "HAS SAID THAT COOK INLET WAS AN EXCELLENT MODEL FOR HOW AN OFFSHORE DEVELOPMENT AND A DELICATE MARINE ENVIRONMENT CAN CO-EXIST. It is something the governor-elect would consider; she would want to learn more about it."

Upper reaches of BRISTOL BAY experience some of the highest tides in the world. One such reach, the Nushagak Bay near Dillingham and another near Naknek in Kvichak Bay have tidal extremes in excess of 30 feet (9.9 m), ranking them -- and the area -- as eighth highest in the world. This, coupled with the extreme number of shoals, sandbars and shallows, makes navigation troublesome, especially during the area's frequently strong winds.
As the shallowest part of the Bering Sea, Bristol Bay is understandably one of the most dangerous areas for large vessels. This is one reason why the Bristol Bay commercial salmon fishing fleet is limited to 32-foot (10 m) overall keel length. In addition, most of the area is not well documented by nautical charts and navigational aids are sparse.

Bristol Bay is home to the world's largest sockeye salmon fishery as well as strong runs of chum salmon, silver salmon and king salmon, each occurring seasonally.
Major industries are commercial fishing and the associated canneries, sport fishing, hunting and tourism. The number of commercial lodges, hunting- and fishing-resorts and visitors to the nearby Katmai National Park and Preserve has grown exponentially in recent years.

The area has also experienced significant interest in oil and mineral development, most notably with the proposed Pebble Mine on the north shore of Iliamna Lake, and auctioning of leases to tracts in the southern Bristol Bay area known as the North Aleutians Basin, an area which has been closed to offshore oil and gas development since a moratorium in 1998.
THE DRAFT PLAN BY THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT (PENDING PUBLIC COMMENTS UNTIL 2/5/2007), ALSO PROPOSES TO OPEN MOST OF THE BLM'S 3.6 MILLION ACRES (15,000 KM²) IN THE AREA TO HARD ROCK MINING AND OIL AND GAS DRILLING.

ready to do some co-existing, delicate marine environment?
Posted by frosty zoom at 09/01/2008 @ 12:00pm
Seismic work involves the use of underwater air guns that generate extremely loud noise – a single blast is 10 times louder than a rocket launch, and the blasts occur every 10 to 15 seconds for days, weeks and even months at a time. These sounds carry through the water for hundreds of miles and have been known to cause permanent hearing loss in marine mammals. They can disrupt their feeding, migration, social bonding, predator avoidance, and have been associated with stranded whales. They also can interfere with Native Alaskans' ability to hunt for these subsistence food sources, particularly the bowhead whale.
Under the provisions of the MMPA, NMFS may authorize the incidental taking by harassment of only "small numbers" of marine mammal population stock. NMFS, however, authorized Shell to harass huge numbers of marine mammals – over 40,000 in total – including nearly 40 percent of the population of beluga whales in the Chukchi Sea and more than 20 percent of the endangered bowhead whales that feed and calve in the Polar Bear Seas.

Archivers take note:
I am going to go ahead with the prediction that this announcement was timed to set the stage for a "graceful" exit from the ticket by Palin.
Sometime soon, certainly by the end of September, you will see SP before the cameras telling us that she wants to "spend more time" with her family and that she doesn't want "to be a distraction" in this most important election.
Who's Mc Nasty got in the wings?
Mittster (magic undies and all) ? Fred Thompson ?
Heck, this might have been a stunt to buy time so that Johnny Mack can continue to woo Hillary (wouldn't Frank wet himself ?), whatever, SP is the patsy. I wonder if she knows.

I swear, some of you people make me sick. Viewing Briston Palin's apparent pregnancy of some kind of come-uppance for the religious right is atrocious. She's a 17-year old kid who is obviously in for more than she ever bargained for, not some rallying point for people who want better sex education.
Granted, the abstinance only curriculum does not work, and most reasonable people know that. But to use a kid, no matter if she is the daughter of a Republican Vice Presidential candidate, as some kind of poster child for the hypocrisy of the Christian right is wrong. I'm a Barack Obama supporter, and i fully agree with him about the need to stop this politics of personal destruction, that you can disagree with him/her without trying to destroy them.
If Barack is half the candidate I think he is, he'll come out with something close to matching my outrage about this issue.

"We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates," requested Sarah Palin.
Well, let's see what Chelsea Clinton has to say about that! For those of us who cannot remember how the radical Right treated her, here's what the late great Molly Ivins wrote back in 1995 (in an article for the May/June issue of MOTHER JONES, now available online):
"On his TV show, early in the Clinton administration, [Rush] Limbaugh put up a picture of Socks, the White House cat, and asked, 'Did you know there's a White House dog?' Then he put up a picture of Chelsea Clinton, who was 13 years old at the time and as far as I know had never done any harm to anyone.
When viewers objected, he claimed, in typical Limbaugh fashion, that the gag was an accident and that without his permission some technician had put up the picture of Chelsea--which I found as disgusting as his original attempt at humor."
I respect Sarah Palin's call for decency. But her appeal to "tradition" rather misses the mark.

STEED16,
This is about HYPOCRISY "and" CHARACTER of a woman who would be president if McCain is elected and has to step aside.
From the Daily Kos Diary, we have a COMPELLING CASE that Sarah Palin LIED TO THE PUBLIC concerning her own pregnancy. Read the Diary below and make your own determination:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/8/30/121350/137
Obama can say whatever he wants, but the American people need to know the CHARACTER of a woman who could be president.
My only issue with the Daily Kos story was the timeline in light of Sarah's new claim that Bristol is ALMOST 5 months pregnant.
But if Sarah really is covering for Bristol and Trig Palin was delivered on April 18th, IT IS STILL POSSIBLE that Bristol is "almost" 5 months pregnant with her SECOND CHILD. A woman is "highly fertile" immediately after pregnancy, and young Levi no doubt was anxious to have sex again with Bristol as soon as he could.
So when Sarah Palin tells the public that "she", not Bristol, gave birth to Trig on April 18th, and this turns out to be FALSE, then the public has a right to reject Palin as their Vice President on the character question that this raises.

The age of consent is defined as 16 years old, according to Alaska statutory rape laws. If a person who is at least 18 years old engages in sexual activity with a person who is 16 years old or younger, he or she will be charged with sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree. This charge is a felony in Alaska.
In addition, Alaska statutory rape laws declare that anyone who is 18 years old or older who has sex with a person who is 16 or 17, or who is at least three years younger than the offender, can be charged with sexual abuse in the third degree.

Posted by frosty zoom at 09/01/2008 @ 2:47pm
So let me get this straight... Trig Palin is not Bristol's sister but her son. I don't know for sure if i buy that. I mean, on the face of the dailykos article, it may seem convincing. But this is, after all the United States of America, and not the Dominican Republic where baseball players regularly forge such documents as birth certificates to change vital statistics in their favor.
In any case, Metteyya, you are right that this twist in the story, if true, is kind of troubling if only for the cover-up of her daughters pregnancy. I guess maybe that can be a legitimate investigative story, because it deals directly with the charachter of Sara Palin. That said, Bristol's current pregnancy should not be a political football, and i still feel very strongly about that.
This assertion that somehow the Sara Palins and John McCains of this world expose their children to this kind of nonsense is tragic. It's one of the reasons Michelle Obama didn't want Barack to run for President, and probably a big reason why a lot of good people don't run for office. Now, you can argue about whether or not there is a tradition about granting the children of (Vice) Presidential candidates some kind of privacy from the media. I can, however, say without equivocation that there should be such a practice.
I'm not one who likes to bash on the media constantly, but this kind of tabloid journalism, especially when it invovles some 17 year old kid just because of who their mom is, is pretty sad.

I like "Know Nothing's" suggestion that the RNC brings this sort of scrutiny upon itself because of its "family values" stance. It would be more meaningful if DNC were ever scrutinized for the mega bucks it both courts and controls (more millionaires in congress, more "blue" CEOs, more pocket contact with fat cat supporters -- Electric Al and his investment pals warrant hardly a mention in MSM circles). There is, I'm told, something in the DNC that can't stomach the growing income gap. What a joke. If ever a bald face liar existed, it's a limosine liberal, and there's more of those every day. I'm not sure if it's worse that the media is complict, that the DNC doesn't acknowledge that the media complict or that the DNC will do everything they can to take apart Palin's story, a story they just can't stand for what it does to expose them as "all about me."

Teenage pregnancy is all too common and not at all shocking today.
However ... this prenancy is not common regardless of how conservatives will paint it.
If this were Bidens daughter or granddaugher, conservative talking heads would be at the cruel head of the pack blasting Biden and the Democrat party.
This is their type of issue to bleed and sit in judgment on.
Reading the comments of some of these hypocrites is disgusting now that the shoe is on the other foot. But what choice do they have?
Respect the private life of Palin and/or her 17 year old daughter? Give me a break!
Palin has accepted the spotlight by accepting a position that she is not qualified for in the first place.
She and her family are fair game now that she is running for office. I'm interested to know how this person, one who would strive to enact laws to regulate your morality, manages her own house.
Evidence shows that whatever message she teaches at home didn't take. This along with the on going investagation of abuse of power would be enough to drop an perceived liberal in his or her tracks.
So don't give me the "hands-off" BS. Obama has spoken like a class act by stating that his campagn wouldn't focus on this.
But ... we need to know a bit more about Palin. It appears that her record and beliefs may not match up with reality.
Christian Right Wing Hypocracy! On display should we forget what it looks like.
Posted by Hoot at 09/01/2008 @ 3:10pm
Posted by steed16 at 09/01/2008 @ 2:58pm
In general, I agree that the family is off limits.
But Sarah Palin has mixed-up politics with her family. I believe the record will show that she fired an outstanding public official because he wouldn't carry out a personal family vendetta Palin had against her sister's ex-husband.
And this latest scrutiny is in large measure based on Sarah's projection to the public that she is some sort of "super mom" who adheres to right-wing "family value" policies of Christian fundamentalists, especially the idea that we only need abstinence-only education in our schools to prevent unwanted teen pregnancies.
Someone who abuses power for personal reasons would have no problem leaning on a doctor friend to put her name on a birth certificate or falsifying birth records. So I don't think this story is going to end until we get a paternity test from Levi or whomever (not sure if Todd's DNA would not show up in grandson) Bristol had sex with other than Levi during the time of conception to establish the paternity of the child.
Posted by Metteyya at 09/01/2008 @ 3:26pm
Palin is against sex education and for abstinence only education. Wants creationism taught in science classes that focus on empirical evidence.

Where do your children's names come from? TODD: Sarah's parents were coaches and the whole family was involved in track and I was an athlete in high school, so with our first-born, I was, like, 'Track!' BRISTOL IS NAMED AFTER BRISTOL BAY. That's where I grew up, that's where we commercial fish. Willow is a community there in Alaska. And then Piper, you know, there's just not too many Pipers out there and it's a cool name. And Trig is a Norse name for "strength."

The point isn't Bristol and her child to be and husband to be. It isn't even Palin's parenting, the point is the rash and impulsive decision by McCain to select Palin over, say Olympia Snow or Kay Bailey Hutchinson or some other qualified female Republican with foreign policy experience. McCain is unpredictable and quick to jump in, as we saw in his response to the Georgian mess. Not good qualities for a President. If McCain had been President during the Cuban missile crisis he would have been more likely, in my view, to listen to the Generals who were urging Kennedy to attack. Obama's training in Law and Politics encourages the kind of sober deliberation the Office demands.
