Bill O'Reilly's Foxy Lady

posted by John Nichols on 05/01/2008 @ 12:25am

You can argue with Bill O'Reilly about a lot of things. But the Fox Newsman got something right Wednesday night.

"(The) media in America," O'Reilly explained, "has become very corrupt, partisan."

No viewer of O'Reilly's program could possibly disagree.

Watching him get cozy with Hillary Clinton, his guest on Wednesday night, was one of the creepier moments in the creepy history of Fox's experiment in partisan broadcasting. And the pursuit of their mutual agenda -- discrediting Clinton's rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, Barack Obama -- confirmed the the full extent of the corruption that results when a political campaign and a broadcast outlet start working together.

O'Reilly and Clinton tag-teamed Obama on the only issue that Fox covers these days: the Rev. Jeremiah Wright

O'Reilly pitched the softball: "Can you believe this Rev. Wright guy? Can you believe this guy?"

Clinton replied: "Well, I'm going to leave it up to voters to decide."

O'Reilly: "Well, what do you think as an American?"

Clinton: "Well, what I said when I was asked directly is that I would not have stayed in the church.

O'Reilly: "You're an American citizen, I'm an American citizen, He's an American citizen, Rev. Wright. What do you think when you hear a fellow American citizen say that kind of stuff about America."

Clinton: "Well, I take offense. I think it's offensive and outrageous. And, you know, I'm going to express my opinion, others can express theirs. But, you know, it is -- it is part of, you know, just an atmosphere that we're in today where all kinds of things are being said."

Clinton is Fox offended.

Clinton is Fox outraged.

Clinton may never be the Democratic nominee for president.

But she's got the makings of a Fox New analyst: corrupt, partisan and ready to play ball with Bill O'Reilly.

I saw this today, and HAD to share it with everyone. It is just a brilliantly researched and written list of inconsistencies with several of Obama's stories. I think it should be done for ALL three candidates, but I guess this is a good way to start at finally looking at the candidates with some honesty.

  18. I did the equation in my head today. I decided there is no way the SD's will give it to Hillary. Now I know some of you will say "You're an idiot" but hear me out. As Frank has so often pointed out the super delegates role is to do what's best for the party. Now you may be saying winning is the best thing for the party and Hillary is most electable. That's the typical argument. This is the problem whether she is more electable or not doesn't matter. If Hillary is GIVEN this election without actually winning by the numbers a lot of Obama's supporters won't vote for her and not only will they not vote for her they will not vote for a Democrat ever again. Now you are asking why or saying Hillary's will do that too. Let's take a look at their base.

Hillary appeals to women over 55 the most. She picks up a decent amount of Hispanic votes but those can go either way. Look at Barack's base. He brings out massive amounts of the youth vote. If you destroy the base of youth voters you lose those voters for a long time to come. Maybe the youth vote doesn't matter now as Mask says but it will when they grow up. These people will start to either not vote or vote third party which will mean more votes lost for Democrats. over 55's will always vote and when you're over 55 you probably have your mind set on your party and will more than likely not vote any other way. So maybe this year they won't vote for Obama but you're guaranteed in 4 years they will. However the youth vote can and most likely will leave if Obama doesn't win which fractures the party for years to come. If Obama wins the youth feel like they have done something worthwhile and will then vote again more continuously and consistently. If Barack get it taken away by SD's that chunk of the youth vote doesn't come out again for another I would say 3 election cycles. Which means WITHOUT those people voting at all or with those people voting third party the Dem's WON'T be able to win again for another 3 election cycles. As much as we like to think the youth vote doesn't matter at all it does matter some. Without it I don't think Demos can win. It won't guarantee you a win. But it can guarantee you a loss. Repub's don't have to base anything on the youth vote because they typically don't get it so they won't need it but Demo's need it.

I think the super delegates see this and it makes them nervous because no matter the outcome if Hillary doesn't get ahead, which she won't, she CAN'T be given the election for fear of doing long term damage to the party. Where as if she loses it only does short term damage in that we MIGHT not get elected come November. Which could work in the favor of Demo's. If you look at the history of the US generally the reason Repubs get elected is because the one before them leaves a mess when they leave office and leave it for a Demo to clean up. When the Demo can't they use that as fodder to get them out of office. They are trying to do it this year. We are in a recession they WANT the Demo's to come in and raise taxes to try fix the mess because they think that will drive voters away from the Demo. If we leave the Republicans to try to clean up their own mess and they can't they will lose 4 years from now no matter who they run and they will lose consistently after that. Can the country take another 4 years of this? I think it can. But it will be very apparent that things are getting worse. The Repubs keep saying they are the only ones who can save us but Bush got us into everything we are in now and Bush-44 is just more of the same. He has admitted to knowing nothing about the economy for GOD'S SAKE. If that's the case all those lobbyists are going to easily make him do what THEY want not what is good for the country. Now I am going on a tangent though. But this is why I don't think the SD's will go for Hillary because it will be suicide for the party and their role is to protect the party not to make sure someone gets in office because if they vote for Hillary we lose the White house no matter what. I think that's why the Repub's have changed tack now. They know Hillary can't win because if she win's the nom we lose 90% of the African-American vote because they will feel like they got robbed once again and that they once again have been shown that a black person can't succeed in this country and you lose at least 70% of the youth vote because they will feel like once again their votes don't matter. She can't win with the constituency of Hispanics because McCain polls well with them too. She can't win with only women because Republican women are still going to vote McCain. She would have to rely on white males and most white males are moderate. Which means McCain can scoop them up. So they have to know that the only person who has a chance is Obama so they are trying to kneecap him now so the Demo's don't stand a chance.

Go ahead, whistle all you want past this particular graveyard, but $5 gas, 4000 killed/30,000 wounded, a housing market & general economic collapse notwithstanding, O'Reilly will be a huge factor in swinging the election into the GOP column in November.

  41. Let's see, Barack says Wrights comments are offensive and antithetical to everything he stands for and he should pretty much be applauded, or excused for being political. Hillary says Wright's comments are offensive and she is being deviously nasty right-wing slime. The issue of Wright itself is a media travesty over a non-issue, but would it be a non-issue if a Republican candidate so embraced an equally controversial right-wing pastor for 20 years? I wouldn't think so, and I don't think The Nation would either. The Republicans may be hypocrites in their denunciations of Wright, but it seems to me too many on the left are being just as hypocritical. As much as I don't see anything particularly offensive in Wright's diatribes, at least I am pretty sure that Hillary would find the right-wing pastor as offensive as she finds Wright.

  51. This Republican thrust to support Clinton tells me clearly that:

    1) They fear Obama and think he might win over Mc Cain and change things substantially in D.C.

    2) They think Clinton is beatable by McCain. It will be such irony if Clinton gets the nomination how will Fox and O'Reilly will dispose of her.

    3) Speeches, sermons, essays and different forms of literature allow for language 'figures'. Wright is patriotic, he is criticism of America only means he wants to help heal her.

    4) All the dirty things Clinton has done to get ahead in the race means she does not have scrupules. I wonder what will she be able to do when nobody sees if she is elected? Obama is right, she is politics as usual.
