Condi for Veep? New Revelations Should End That Speculation

posted by Katrina vanden Heuvel on 04/10/2008 @ 5:35pm

The rumorlet that Condi was eyeing the GOP ticket got some traction last Sunday when Dan Senor, former spokesperson for the catastrophic Coalition Provisional Authority, said Rice had recently spoken at a meeting convened by Grover Norquist and his band of economic snake oilsmen. I was sitting to Senor's right--as part of ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" roundtable--when he trotted out this line. I jumped in, suggesting that it seemed delusional to add the worst National Security Adviser in modern US history (okay, tied with Henry Kissinger) to a GOP ticket already burdened by its support for a criminal and disastrous war and occupation. Yesterday, Rice's chances to be Vice-President got blown out of the water. ABC News reported that the Secretary of State chaired explicit White House discussions about which torture techniques should be used on prisoners.

According to these reports, these talks "were so detailed" that "some of the interrogation sessions were almost choreographed -- down to the number of times CIA agents could use a specific tactic." This is more evidence that senior officials, "not only discussed specific plans and specific interrogation methods, but approved them". Given these new revelations not only are Rice's chances of becoming a veep candidate blown out of the water--if there's any trace of decency left in a GOP headed by two torturers-in Chief, Bush & Cheney--but this news should also lead to demands that she resign as Secretary of State.

As True Majority puts it: "America needs a Secretary of State who can repair relations with countries around the world and stand up for human rights. Instead, we have a Secretary of State who chaired meetings on specific torture techniques. Our international reputation and moral standing are just the the latest in the ever growing costs of this Administration's foreign policy.

The ABC report indicates that officials at these meetings included Vice President Cheney, former National Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, CIA Director George Tenet and Attorney General John Ashcroft. It is now clear that abusive techniques at Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib were not isolated incidents by a few "bad apples". Instead, they were the logical consequence of policies dictated at the highest level of government and led by the current Secretary of State. Her directives to the CIA were unambiguous, "This is your baby, go do it".

Take action right now. Demand Rice resign. Sign the petition: http://www.truemajority.org/condi

  1. She won't resign. These people have not honor, nor a sense of shame, nor a trace of true Americanism. They worry only about how comfortable a cushion they can land on when our true long national nightmare is over on 1/20/2009

  3. this report is or rather should be the smoking gun that would get Bush impeached and removed.

America has lost much on 9/11. most of all its moral stature.

  4. I like that conservatives preach moral superiority because they believe in God or whatever yet they are willing to allow torture, mass murder and genocide as long is it "keeps America safe". Even if there is not proof that it is keeping America safe. It is kind of like the bear repellant argument. If I sell you bear repellant in Los Angeles and no bears attack you in Los Angeles it does mean it was because of the bear repellant and you still wasted your money.

  6. Condi is a war criminal & traitor...

1.) Look at her sordid & squalid track-record as National Security Adviser, where she squandered her time hanging-out with her "husband" (her word) George W. -- watching football -- whilst both ignored the warnings that we were at risk of a major attack. 9/11 happened on her watch, because she spends more time contemplating her reflection in the mirror than in considering Presidential Daily Briefings (PDB)... She's admitted that she has no imagination (i.e. no ability to deeply think)!

2.) The corporate-owned main-stream media hacks who worship at the altar of quasi-fascism adore their Queen Condi and ignore the fact that Bush appointed her as "Head of the Iraq Stabilization Group" in October 2003. After that appointment, Iraqi stabilization & security went to hell... Condi is an incompetent.

3.) As Secretary of State, Condi flies around demonstrating that she is a vacuous fashion victim -- with nothing of substance (except disaster after disaster) occurring everywhere where she personally intervenes. She is the laughing-stock of the diplomatic corps-- and the majority of State Department officials can't wait to see her back-side (in a different sense that her "hubby" W.). Also, world leaders, smile broadly (especially Israeli leaders) during their photo-ops, whilst telling her what is in their best interest. Condi hasn't served our best interests, here in the United States of America.

Condi doesn't give a damn about "We the People". The fact that she was instrumental in Bush/Cheney/Rove/Rice (i.e. neo-con policy) orders to murder, torture, rape & illegal rendition-- renders her fit to be arrested.

Of course, if she was a white male-- she would have gone the way of Rumsfeld. But, then Condi is permitted instead to get away with squandering U.S. reputation; our U.S. soldier's blood; and, our taxpayer's treasure. Pathetic!

  10. Condi Rice is the new "Silent Sam", who like Samuel Pierce, the disgraced former GOP HUD Secretary under Reagan, is the one black face in the circle of Republican power who quietly approves her bosses actions and is dismissed by the circle as a necessary token.

If there were attacks not stopped then you would have a reason for these protections. But if you implement policies for no reason other than to waste money and prove to the world a little more that Americans don't care about anyone but ourselves you have to prove to me that attacks have been stopped. You keep saying it has kept America safe but there have been no attempted attacks that were stopped by any more of the protections. The reason you try to change the subject is because you have no proof that an attack has been stopped therefore you can't justify the need for all of this excessive policy.

Would you buy bear repellant in Los Angeles?

    1. Condi will NOT be Veep. Sorry, HAPPY. Your "silver bullet" to blunt Obama or Hillary isn't going to be there. McCain will be a slightly younger "white guy" (that the LVLIB guys like) and you'll have to tread lightly around the race issue.

    2. Nobody is going to resign from the Bush Administration...unless "something" comes up in the Spring. But that's looking increasingly unlikely. (BTW, saw John Nichols is STILL dreaming of impeachment further down this chain.....geez, louise...is it delusion or a book pitch at this point?)

    3. Kissinger walked...so will Condi. Hell, she'll probably be "redeemed" by good P.R. in the 2010s to 2020s.

EXACTLY my point. Bush would be absolutely sure to tote any attacks that were actually thwarted. Why? Because it gives legitimacy to his crazy and excessive policies. It gives proof that what he is doing is working and making us safer and not just destroying our economy and our collateral with the rest of the world. I contend that these new policies have done nothing but harm America and make her more unsafe and make it more unsafe for Americans abroad. We have pissed off enough people that now people are starting to want revenge on us for the excesses.

Unfortunately, without some sudden attack of morality on some mid-level Bushie, there will be no resignations or dismissals period. Nothing will change until January 20, 2009 (barring Bush cancelling or nullifying the election for "national security" reasons) when whoever the new occupant is takes over.

It's very simple. They KNOW they are right and moral and just in their actions. They only require the satisfaction of their moral certitude and to Hades with anything else, it's just so much background noise. How does this belie youth Happy? Or are you once again being condescending because I look for other ways to protect our country than killing people? If I worked at a dock wouldn't that make me more experienced than you in the matters of dock security? I think the reason you keep pointing out my age is because you have no respect for people younger than you. You think somehow you being older than me renders more weight to your argument. However the argument you proffered is something I already know. That's why I said INCREASE our security measures so we can start to close some of these holes. You think I don't know about dock security? I live in Los Angeles next toe Long Beach. The #1 port in America responsible for something like 40-60% of American imports. I think it's the number 6 port in the world. We have been hit over the head with dock security here.

Your condescending remarks don't change the fact that many people would agree with me about securing ourselves here rather than killing more people to do it. Like I have said war only leads to more wars. For every terrorist killed two more are born in their place. You are fighting an endless and losing battle. Maybe it is time to try a new tactic. The benefit to youth is that it is easier for me to think outside of the box. You get locked into a way of doing things that whether it works or not you keep doing it because it is all that you have known. Maybe you shouldn't have such contempt for people younger than you and try to benefit from that we have a great imagination and can think in new and exciting ways about dealing with things.

That's the biggest line of crap you rethugs spew. If you remember, Sept. 11th took place under the helm of George W Bush and Dick Cheney. They sat on their asses and allowed it to happen which in turn gave them the excuse to go into Iraq. The plans for Iraq were on the drawing table before 9/11,

What did W say to the official giving him the report about possible airplane attacks against the U.S. via Bin Laden? Oh ya, it was this, "Consider your ass fully covered". Yep, a real concerned president for you there.

This country isn't one ounce more safe than it was before Sept. 11th nor does Bushco's fighting them over there so we don't fight them here crap make any plausible sense. In fact, if anything, we are more at risk now than we were then since we've now given many Iraqi people a damn good reason to want to take out revenge on us.

Meanwhile, the puppet Iraqi government's oil reserves continue to grow as do the billions of dollars in cash they have stashed away in some U.S. banks. Can anyone say kickbacks here? Unfortunately, we the American people who are funding this fiasco, aren't getting jack out of this whole endeavor.

The link below shows just how involved good old Dick Cheney and Ms Rice were in the torture talks.

Did the Repubs create Ross Perot?....don't think so.

If, as you contend, Norquist and the "true cons" are pushing Bob Barr...they're pushing the wrong guy anyway.

Barr has joined with the ACLU to oppose the Patrioat Act and the NSA wire-taps. He also is talking Libertarian Party nomination...not independent...which means he'd have to support a lot of libertarian stuff that the "true cons" wouldn't cotton to.

    Sorry...you're wrong on this one.

  59. In all seriousness, what the heck is going on???? There is more than sufficient grounds for impeachment for not just one, but multiple offenses, and not just for Bush, but Cheney too! I have never been so disgusted with the democratic leadership. Does anyone think that if the party roles were reversed, republicans would think twice about pushing impeachment hearings through. They did it over lies about a bj and Dems won't do it over lies about an illegal war, illegal torture, and illegal eavesdropping. I mean, how ridiculous is this. Our constitution is a joke, our bill of rights is a joke, congress is a joke, and the entire world is laughing its ass off at us. Congress, get with the program and do your job!

  60. Mask, are you not a self described libertarian?

I don't think the repubs are "creating" Barr.

but, lets ask our resident cons what they think of Bob Barr?

    Cons?

    Posted by crabwalk at 04/11/2008 @ 11:14am

  61. Barr and Norquist were members of Patriots to Restore Checks and Balances. a PATRIOT Act reform group.

Norquist on Barr- "...the Libertarian Party has always needed more practical leadership. Maybe it's like that scene in Young Frankenstein where the scientist swaps part of his brain and the monster swaps another body part. It can be good for both of them."

I have to agree with 'ya on this one. He may be conservative, but he's not sympathetic to the neocon agenda.

  65. Bob Barr co-authored a Libertarian Party appeal to Ron Paul to seek their Presidential nomination. With Paul declining to do so, Barr appears to be one candidate, Democratic ex-Senator and former Presidential candidate Mike Gravel another, and there's at least one long-time party activist in the race, as well. The Libertarians have run aggressive campaigns for President in the past; the difference this time is that the Right was far less fractured in 1980 and 1988, for instance, than it is now.

With a Barr/Gravel Libertarian ticket, and if Alan Keyes is the Constitution Party's presidential nominee, McCain could lose moderate, anti-war, pro-civil liberty Republican voters to Barr and Gravel, and socially conservative hardliners to Keyes. Are we talking big numbers, amounts that could throw the election? I doubt it, since I think once the Democratic race is over McCain will fade fast as the country looks to turn the corner on the war and economic policies. But I wouldn't be surprised if the Libertarians have their best showing ever, and maybe catch some of the same kind of BS flack that Nader's been taking for the last 8 years if McCain loses a particular state by a tight margin. And the Constitution Party might pick up a couple of hundred thousand votes, if those social conservatives decide not to sit at home.

Actually, having these guys in the race might not be such a bad thing for the GOP, because even if they don't vote for McCain, there's at least a 50/50 (Barr/Gravel) or much higher (Keyes) chance that these voters would pull the lever for Republicans lower down the ballot.

    nor are many "true conservatives".

Barr is closer to many of them than is McCain.

Will the cons stick to ideology, or go with the "most electable"?

I think it will be interesting to watch. Will the cons sell out to the "liberal" MCCain in order to keep the conservative Hillary out of office?

wouldn't it be nice if it was a four way race, a race in which we had some actual choice? Or, for that matter, a five way, with IRO voting? ahh, a boy can still dream of a real republic, not a two party oligarchy.

Like Rumsefeld and Co., Ms. Rice will be indicted for war crimes by a third party state and spend her remaining years like Henry Kissinger as a very will paid consultant who has to pay close attention to where she travels and the current status of any extradition treaties between her destination and the prosecuting nation.

  70. good point CK. I have always wondered why the constitution party gets so little traction within the con world. I have hope that this year will be their year.

We can only be better off if some of these "3rd parties" start garnering 5% or more.

but, Keyes? He is a joke. Zero experience. could not even beat O in a Senators race. However, I know an awful lot of cons that love his rhetoric, as absurd as it is.

And your Jewish comment is nonsensical. The right-wing Likud view is NOT the view shared by the vast majority of Jews, although AIPAC has done a wonderful job of "convincing" (bribing) Congress that right-wing Jewish views are mainstream.

  79. Reality seems to never quite arrive for the far left. Their constant visions of conservatives hauled off in chains never materialize.

Lester Crawford, a former commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). According to an October 17, 2006, Associated Press article, Crawford "abruptly resigned" from the FDA in September 2005 and pleaded guilty to charges of "conflict of interest and false reporting of information about stocks he owned in food, beverage and medical device companies he was in charge of regulating" in October 2006. According to the AP article, "[b]eginning in 2002, Crawford filed seven incorrect financial reports with a government ethics office and Congress, leading to the charges."

Brian J. Doyle, former deputy press secretary for the Department of Homeland Security. On September 19, 2006, Doyle "pleaded no contest to seven counts of using a computer to seduce a child and 16 counts of transmitting harmful material to a minor," according to The Ledger of Lakeland, Florida.

Claude A. Allen, former assistant to the president for domestic policy. Allen resigned in February 2006 after a January 2006 police investigation concerning multiple fraudulent returns to a Target store in Gaithersburg, Maryland. On August 4, 2006, Allen pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor theft.

David H. Safavian, a former chief of staff of the General Services Administration. Safavian was found guilty of lying and obstructing justice in June 2006. According to a June 21, 2006, article in The Washington Post, Safavian resigned "days before" his September 2005 arrest. The Post added that he "was convicted in U.S. District Court ... of covering up his many efforts to assist [disgraced Republican lobbyist Jack] Abramoff in acquiring two properties controlled by the GSA, and also of concealing facts about a lavish weeklong golf trip he took with Abramoff to Scotland and London in the summer of 2002."

John T. Korsmo, former chairman of the Federal Housing Finance Board. On April 7, 2005, Korsmo "pleaded guilty to one count of making false statements to the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, which oversees the Finance Board, and the Inspector General for the Finance Board." The Senate committee and inspector general were investigating Korsmo's participation in an October 2002 congressional fundraising event.

  81. The dems are in trouble whether B.O. or Hillary gets the nod. As I've said a thousand times, you can thank Obama's candidacy for that. The dems had a list a mile long, full of misdeeds by the Dubya cabal to campaign on and now they can wipe they're arses with it, thanks to Barry-O.

Posted by FRANKGRITS 04/10/2008 @ 11:06pm | ignore this person

You know something Frank, I've finally had enough of your Democratic Leadership Council, "you need to coronate my candidate or we're all going to hell shit."

No matter who wins the Democratic nomination, they'll still be plenty of shit to throw at McCain regarding his part in the Bush Administration. Why you can't seem to get that is beyond me.

No, actually it isn't. You're part of that "How dare this upstart run and spoil our coronation!" set. That Barack Obama (not Barry-O as you so disrespectfully put it) actually deemed himself worthy of competing for the Democratic nomination just galls you. You take it as a personal affront.

I have three words for you pal: Get. Over. It.

I'm telling you right now that if Hillary pulls the pin on the Democratic Superdelegate grenade, she'll never win in November. A lot of folks will decide to sit this one out.

But then again, I'm noticing that you're down with the while phyrric victory thing.

We'd have a President who was previously captured and tortured for bombing innocents from the air and a VP who previously directed the capture and torture of people for the killing of innocents from the air.
