Barack Tops Topless Britney

posted by Ari Melber on 01/28/2008 @ 4:57pm

Barack Obama's South Carolina victory speech skyrocketed to the top of YouTube on Monday, shooting past new footage of a topless Britney Spears and netting over 323,000 views so far.

Obama and Britney have actually been battling on YouTube since last week, when he shot past two videos of a (fully clothed) Spears trailed by paparazzi. Obama's speech is also the second most "favorited" video of the day on YouTube, just behind a personal message from Ron Paul. (Paul does not draw as many overall viewers, but he has the most views of any Republican candidate, and his motivated supporters consistently choose his clips as their favorites.) And today the Obama Campaign rushed out another video of his endorsement event with Ted Kennedy -- we'll see if the liberal lion can also rival the pop culture competition.

The Kennedy and Paul videos are below. If you want Britney, go find her yourself.

Update: It appears Obama will be the only presidential candidate releasing an immediate video response to the State of the Union. Campaign spokesman Bill Burton recently sent this short blast to reporters: "tonight [Obama] will release a video response to the President's State of the Union address. Later this evening, we will provide a script of the video and a link where you can view it. The video will be released after the Democratic response."

  1. One thing I thought was interesting here was how much the themes Kennedy mentioned where identical to those that many of Reagan's speeches talked about, like the best days of America being ahead of us, like a rendezvous with destiny, etc. I think one interesting facet of that is that hope and progress aren't the exclusive possession of either party, which is part of why I find Obama's cross-partisanship appealing, even if I disagree with meaningful parts of his policy platform.

So "optimism" and "hope" are wholely owned subsidiaries of the GOP?

I'm not saying that "only Republicans get to do hope." That's a little bit of a strawman. What I'm saying is that the particular kind of optimism Kennedy's talking about very closely resembles that of Reagan. I'm specifically talking about the phraseology; some of the particular phrases Kennedy used were pulled right out of Reagan's speeches.

  7. What? Kennedy sounds like Reagan? How Orwellian can we get? Much of Reagan's popular appeal was his attempt to repackage the hopeful language of JFK (ie. city on a hill=camelot). I'm not taking sides per se, but let's have a little historical perspective. My guess is Jack Kennedy didn't invent optomistic nationalism either. Remember Hamarabi, "there is nothing new under the sun."
