Fighting "State of the Union" Deception

posted by Ari Melber on 01/23/2008 @ 3:41pm

President Bush has been caught lying again:

[Hundreds of false statements about Iraq] were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses.

That's the conclusion of a new, nonpartisan study by the Center for Public Integrity and the Fund for Independence in Journalism. Researchers found 935 false statements from the Bush administration over a two-year period.

2008-01-23-Picture1.png

It's, like, a pattern or something. And next week, Bush is giving his last State of the Union address, a bully pulpit he used for several deceptions fingered in the report. (Including the famous falsehood that Iraq "recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.") Now the Campaign for America's Future is launching a "reality check" campaign to correct falsehoods in the address. They just posted a prebuttal video on YouTube. The idea, apparently, is that we shouldn't have to wait five years to correct lies from the President of the United States.

    2. All the Repubs are talking "Reagan", not "Bush"...so THEY're trying to distance themselves.

    3. Wexler's impeachment move is likely going nowhere.

    5. NOBODY (at this point) is going to budge. The 30% Bush Support Crowd have basemented out....and the rest of us know he's a liar and/or incompetent.

    So....what's the point?

  4. Is kind of amazing that a "Lies / month" graph is something needed to measure the veracity of the POTUS. Of course, if the MSM had been doing their jobs as opposed to putting on frilly skirts and waving pom-poms, maybe something might have been done when it did matter. That being said, I don't think a censure would be out of order as a "swat on the behind" as he's leaving.

It's the least we can do!

  8. Being very interested in the candidates positions on all the issues, I came across a non-profit, non-partisan website that was very helpful to me called ProCon.org. They have a link which takes you to a chart that lists all the candidates and their positions on each issue, pro or con. It is very handy and seems to be updated frequently. They also have links to bios and lots of interesting little-know facts.

  9. why not continue to look at the stupidest, most vile regime in the history of our country and point out their lies and ass covering bullshit?

hmmm...median income declining for almost 40 years...a few getting mega-rich while the many get slowly poorer...rampant consumerism encouraged on the part of ever more impoverished schmuk nation by extension of credit rather than increasing share of prosperity...the elites benefitting economically from such elite enabled and encouraged self destructive, materialist irresponsibility....

solution? throw out a few hundred dollars to the $40,000 a year crowd to enable them to continue buying stupid china made plastic crap they dont need and continue to pay them less every year. the under $40,000'ers? who cares? inconsequential...

so after schmuk nation either finall puts aside their meatless bone of a tax rebate, mindlessly spends it on useless crap, or uses it to make a debt payment...what then you mushmouthed idiot, george bush and your enablers?

  30. oh well,

    this goes HERE:

World's First Air-Powered Car: Zero Emissions by Next Summer

This six-seater tax, which should be available in India next year, is powered entirely by a tank filled with compressed air.

    By Matt Sullivan

Published in the June 2007 issue.

India's largest automaker is set to start producing the world's first commercial air-powered vehicle. The Air Car, developed by ex-Formula One engineer Guy Nègre for Luxembourg-based MDI, uses compressed air, as opposed to the gas-and-oxygen explosions of internal-combustion models, to push its engine's pistons. Some 6000 zero-emissions Air Cars are scheduled to hit Indian streets in August of 2008.

Barring any last-minute design changes on the way to production, the Air Car should be surprisingly practical. The $12,700 CityCAT, one of a handful of planned Air Car models, can hit 68 mph and has a range of 125 miles. It will take only a few minutes for the CityCAT to refuel at gas stations equipped with custom air compressor units; MDI says it should cost around $2 to fill the car's carbon-fiber tanks with 340 liters of air at 4350 psi. Drivers also will be able to plug into the electrical grid and use the car's built-in compressor to refill the tanks in about 4 hours.

Of course, the Air Car will likely never hit American shores, especially considering its all-glue construction. But that doesn't mean the major automakers can write it off as a bizarre Indian experiment -- MDI has signed deals to bring its design to 12 more countries, including Germany, Israel and South Africa.

    Really?

More than six in 10 in a poll by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press said they oppose the Supreme Court completely overturning the high court's decision 30 years ago allowing legal abortions. That number has been essentially unchanged for more than a decade.

the American Research Group asked 1,100 Americans:

Do you favor or oppose the United States Senate passing a resolution censuring President George W. Bush for authorizing wiretaps of Americans within the United States without obtaining court orders?

The results show most Americans favour censoring Bush:

    46% in Favour

    44% Oppose

    10% Undecided

"If President Bush did not tell the truth about his reasons for going to war with Iraq, Congress should consider holding him accountable by impeaching him."

The poll found that 50% agreed with the statement

44% disagreed, and 6% said they didn't know or declined to answer. The poll has a +/- 3.1% margin of error.

In August and September of 1998, 16 major polls asked about impeaching President Clinton (http://democrats.com/clinton-impeachment-polls). Only 36% supported hearings to consider impeachment, and only 26% supported actual impeachment and removal. Even so, the impeachment debate dominated the news for months, and the Republican Congress impeached Clinton despite overwhelming public opposition.

    --

Bush has a 24% approval rating.

Congress, which has NOT censored, opened impeachment hearings, called for troop reduction. passed coherent energy legislation, called for open hearings on multiple admin violations of law, controlled spending, all of which are blocked by repubs and conservative dems...

has an approval rating in the teens.

Most Americans support access to birth control.

    --

    14-June-2005

A new poll indicates that 60 percent of Americans think the United States should withdraw some or all of its troops from Iraq.

The Gallup poll of about one thousand adults, conducted earlier this month, shows that public support for the troop withdrawal is at its highest level in two years. Only 36 percent of those surveyed think troop levels should be maintained or increased.

According to the survey 56 percent of Americans would be upset if more troops were sent to Iraq. The same number, 56 percent, said they do not believe the war in Iraq was worth fighting.

So, LUVSDESPOTS, I think you need to revisit your thoughts on who is the fringe

What happened to the conservative's blathering on and on about the "rule of law" when it came to perjury (a lie about a blow job while under oath), but when an entire administration has committed more illegal and unconstitutional acts than Nixon could have dreamed of in his greatest fantasies, the conservatives turn into the biggest bunch of spinners and masters of illusion you have ever seen.

"Bush didn't lie, he was given bad intelligence."

"It isn't torture if it catches terrorists."

"It isn't unconstitutional to wiretap American phones without warrants if we might catch a terrorist."

"He said he would fire anybody who leaked a CIA operative's name...He said he would fire anybody who is convicted of leaking...what leak?"

"Every president fires US attorneys - who cares that nobody else ever did it in the middle of a term?"

It matters because McCain, for one, would continue with the Bush policies in Iraq. It matters because there are neo-cons like Roger Cohen who still claim that getting rid of Hussein was worth all that has still transpired. It matters because there are those who will keep repeating, like Petraeus, give it another six months.

Emphasizing the lies that got us into Iraq underlines a fundamental flaw of the endeavor and its continuation.

    Posted by brunowe at 01/24/2008 @ 10:02am

  49. You know this lying mantra has been an excellent tool used by the left to drive the Presidents approval rating down. Of course it has meant a change in the definition of a lie--it no longer means to knowingly state a falsehood---it now means to say anything that turns out to be incorrect. Well I know that Republicans are sometimes slow learners but with the Democrat candidate being favored in the general election I think that we can now use this new definition provided for us by the left and begin to count the "lies". Already Hillary leads in this category and what turns out to be truly amazing is that she leads in this category using both the old and new defintion of the word "lie". What is good for the goose is good for the gander --let the count begin. I was going to say "tit for tat" but I am sure Hamilton grad would come on here and be offended.

That might be true...if any of the leading DEMOCRATS were pushing for immediate withdrawal.

Right now, both sides are NOT arguing "how we got there" and only nuanced arguments on "how we get out".

If Hillary and Obama came out, agreed with the study, and said "Bush lied us into Iraq"...but still said "We're probably going to have troops there until 2013"...

does it matter about the first part???

I'm sorry, you think "the left using the lying mantra"...

has been what drove Bush's approval rating down?!?!?!?

Not the fact the war's been dragging on for 5 years, 3900 GIs have died, HUNDREDS of BILLIONS (approaching a TRILLION) and Iraq's still a mess (Sorry even Petraeus "needs more time"); Hurricane Katrina, Plame-gate, Schiavo, Abramoff, etc., etc.?

  57. And where is this story? The White House has destroyed millions of emails that they legally are supposed to archive. And, shockingly, the days that are missing seem to coincide with some events involving the Plame affair. This makes Nixon's 18 1/2 minutes of missing tape seem like less than nothing, and yet I hardly see or hear any discussion about this in the mainstream media.

    WTF?!!!!

Are you kidding me? Millions of emails that are potentially damaging evidence, or that at least are historical documents that are legally supposed to be archived, gone? The scope and magnitude of this is astounding, and that there is little to no mention of it other than a couple of blurbs here and there is sickening.

And I will be proactive and present the conservative spin in advance:

"Clinton/Gore did it, too." Not to this scale or level of pervasiveness.

"It was a simple mistake. Stop with the conspiracy insanity." One email is a mistake - millions is a conspiracy of monstrous proportions.

"Most real people who aren't liberal whacko's dont care." People's ignorance of this incredible fiasco doesn't mean that people condone it.

  62. Continuing the discussion on nuklar energy, from the NYT [bold mine], while I head out and burn some fossil fuel.....

    America Needs France's Atomic Anne

    By ROGER COHEN

    Published: January 24, 2008

It's not often that I find myself recommending a French state-owned industry as the answer to major U.S. problems, but I guess there's an exception to every rule.

In this case the exception is the French nuclear energy company Areva, which provides about 80 percent of the country's electricity from 58 nuclear power plants, is building a new generation of reactor that will come on line at Flamanville in 2012, and is exporting its expertise to countries from China to the United Arab Emirates.

Contrast that with the United States, where just 20 percent of electricity comes from nuclear plants, no commercial reactor has come on line since 1996, no new reactor has been ordered for decades, and debate about nuclear power remains paralyzing despite its clean-air electricity generation in the age of global warming.

    Areva is headed by Anne......

....Among Democrats, Barack Obama has shown most willingness (albeit guarded) to back nuclear power,......

It's time to look to the French. They've got their heads in the right place, with nuclear power enjoying a 70 percent approval rating. The Germans, by contrast, have gone silly-Green and are shunning nuclear power. The British, more smart-Green, are reviving their plants.

.....we have to get over our fears, especially irrational ones.

Nuclear power has proved safe in both France and America -- not one radiation-related death has occurred in the history of U.S. commercial nuclear power. It constitutes a vital alternative to the greenhouse-gas spewing coal-power plants that account for over 50 percent of U.S. electricity generation. Thousands of people die annually breathing the noxious particles of coal-fire installations.

..."Nuclear power is the most efficient energy source we have," said Gwyneth Cravens, author of "Power to Save the World: The Truth About Nuclear Power." "Uranium is energy-dense. If you got all your electricity from nuclear for your lifetime, your share of the waste would fit in a soda can."

Cravens once feared this waste so much that she demonstrated against nuclear power plants, but she's come around. Like Patrick Moore, a founder of Greenpeace who once lambasted nuclear power as "criminal" and now advocates its use, she's been convinced by the evidence. That's called growing up.....

  64. The study counted 935 false statements in the two-year period. It found that in speeches, briefings, interviews and other venues, Bush and administration officials stated unequivocally on at least 532 occasions that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction or was trying to produce or obtain them or had links to al-Qaida or both.

"It is now beyond dispute that Iraq did not possess any weapons of mass destruction or have meaningful ties to al-Qaida," according to Charles Lewis and Mark Reading-Smith of the Fund for Independence in Journalism staff members, writing an overview of the study. "In short, the Bush administration led the nation to war on the basis of erroneous information that it methodically propagated and that culminated in military action against Iraq on March 19, 2003."

Named in the study along with Bush were top officials of the administration during the period studied: Vice President Dick Cheney, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and White House press secretaries Ari Fleischer and Scott McClellan.

Bush led with 259 false statements, 231 about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 28 about Iraq's links to al-Qaida, the study found. That was second only to Powell's 244 false statements about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 10 about Iraq and al-Qaida.

Gradually becoming a highly unlikely prospect (from a start of "a dim prospect"). Two scenarios-

    1. The Repub wins in 2008. Congress will be too busy worrying about HIM to "go back" and try to nail Bush or Cheney. Plus, aside from "embarassing" them in a hearing or two, all they have is impeachment and post-Presidency impeachments aren't Constitutional.

    2. Hillary wins. And (A) she'll be too busy trying to get Congress to work on her agenda to want them to spend time on it. And (B) Bill dropped all the DOJ investigations of Bush-41 when he took office....Her Nibs likely to do the same with Bush-43.

Your retort, "big accident", reminds me of two very distinctive days.....when Challenger blew up on launch in FL and Columbia blew up on reentry over Texas. I've been to Cape Kennedy and the Manned Space Center here in Houston multiple times, and, the thought of quitting the space program because of these "big accidents" never ocurred to me. Granted, the number of lives lost weren't large, but the sadness I felt affects me even now as I write this.....

Let me just say you and I have very, very different perspectives on risks and rewards; yet, curiously, you are also worried about nuclear wastes that stays `hot' for thousands of years buried a mile underground.

Today's WSJ had another article dealing with China's chronic energy shortage....even adding one coal-fired plant a week, they can't keep up with the demand for energy......the ever bulging middle class is just now acquiring A/Cs and dandy appliances like washers & dryers....heck, for the first time ever, China is importing coal into its southern Econ Hot Zones--it's faster than transporting domestic coal from far north over stressed-out rails.

Here we are, the country with the knowhow, the patents, broad geography to locate nuke plants far from populations, etc....and we stopped cause little ole Three Mile Island....what a joke the EnviroNuts have made us into! Yet, the same nuts decry our dependency on foreign energy!
