Former Secretary of State Colin Powell praised Barack Obama on the eve of the New Hampshire primary, crediting the Illinois Senator for breaking barriers while running as "an American man" who can represent the entire nation. In an interview with PBS host Tavis Smiley, Powell said he was "taking joy" in Obama's rise and he said citizens across the country can "enjoy this moment where a person like Barack Obama can knock down all of these old barriers that people thought existed with respect to the opportunities that are available to African Americans."
Powell, the first black person to serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, National Security Advisor, and Secretary of State, also firmly rebutted the idea that reporters or voters should assess whether a candidate is white or black "enough."
This argument about him not being black enough, that's just absolute nonsense. He is putting himself forward not as a black man but as an American man who wants to be president of the United States of America. We should see Barack as a candidate for president who happens to be black, and not a black candidate for president.

I have to say I like the approach of this. I'm sick of people running themselves according to their race, gender, sexual preference etc. If you put yourself out as the "black" candidate or "female" candidate you alienate yourself. Why not just run as the American person instead of categorizing yourself.

Well said, Colin!
America needs more Barack Obama's to heal the deep racial divisions that have held this country back from achieving its awesome potential!

It is ridiculous to talk about whether he's "black enough." That plays directly into stereotypes -i.e. every black needs to adhere to some monolithic black stereotype to be accepted. No deviation allowed. It's actually a racist idea. (Judging him on the color of his skin or on whether his behavior seems "ethnic" enough). Brainless idea!

I'll try to be gentle....as we are both presumably on the Right!
Powell did NOT commit any sin by stating what a lot of fair-minded people of any party feel. Even bitter Edwards or Hillary partisans, certainly a very, very large majority (IMO), feel the same.
From what Ari posted, Powell made no endorsement as to his having any superior level of preparedness to assume the Presidency......but Colin focused on the undeniable fact that Obama HAS DONE SOMETHING HISTORIC.
In fact, what Colin Powell has done, just goes to show the great man he is & exactly the reason many of us had hoped he would run!

Thanks Colin.
You could have stopped all the madness.

On "experience": Obama is not the first person to run for President with only 2 years experience in the Senate. Abraham Lincoln also ran for President against the entrenched politicians of his day. Lincoln won and became one of the best presidents (if not the best) ever elected.
On "change": Voters are ready for the Obama "unite and govern" recipe for governing and are fed up with the status quo "divide and conquer" (triangulation) recipe used by Clinton, Edwards and other entrenched politicians.

Obama claims to not be running as a black man, but sans black Obama is a nobody. If Obama were not black there would be no buzz. His foreign policy statements on Iran and Venezuela indicate he has no clue and would be right at home with those idiot rulers. In a debate with any of the Republicans, he would nat stand a chance. Put me in the ring with Colin. Make him the Demo candidate! To think that two small states can be so significant is totally ridiculous.

Can't disagree....but I think to a very similar degree, it would've been about the same if Colin Powell or Condi Rice is running. All are accomplished Americans, but black! Same for Hillary from a gender perspective!
Obama won't be put to the `test' until AFTER he's nominated (still a big IF) since for most Dems and the MSM, it's just NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT.....double standard between white (Edwards, Clinton, Dennis K.) and black? Absolutely! The `test' will come from the Repubs!

That is absolutely ridiculous! We have already had "black" candidates for president like Jesse and Sharpton and NO BUZZ!!!
You guys have VERY SHORT memories, and simply do not understand that Barack is A LOT more than race. You should go study some of his writings from several years ago and educate yourself on who Barack really is. One thing for sure, he ain't Jesse and he ain't Sharpton, and that is all Powell is saying.

Black, white or a little of both... Obama has decency and charisma, and he's not just frittering it away for personal influence. He makes people feel good about themselves... and it's high time someone had the guts to remind us here in America that the Government is beholden to it's people, and that the people's visionary quest can become the genuine calling of political might... as we all grew up believing it could.
As the hew and cry of the 'righties' beckons us to be appalled by Obama's apparent lack of experience, I wonder about GWB's pre-presidential 'experience'... and how we rallied around his self ensconcing 'war president' proclamation... without a shred of evidence to verify our enthusiasm...
Obama, however, is a harbinger of change... change from what we now have... extreme partisanship and senseless unamerican animosity towards one another and the world... to the simpler creed of "one nation, indivisible... with justice and freedom for all."
Do you have the courage it takes to believe in the hard working, innovation loving people that make the US a light to the world? Or are you part of the problem? It's a basic choice we all have to make... and I think you've got what it takes to see greatness of character and feel relieved rather than threatened. It's time to find out what's right about this world and it's people... by caring for both.

I most certainly like Sen Obama but Colin, please keep your mouth shut with any more of your comments. YOU, Powell, sat in front of all of us that infamous day at the UN and pushed forward with the seriously flawed case for WMDs. You have ZERO credibility in promoting the criminal policies of that fcking monkey Bushie junior and his fat a s s sidekick, Mr Heart Attack, DICK Cheney. Go back into hiding Colin.
Posted by christinedish at 01/08/2008 @ 01:31am
What does Powell think Obama is worthy of to be praised for, being an American? Like the rest of us aren't worthy of being praised for being Americans? Is simply being an American sufficient to be president? Is one so simply minded to think that is meaningful? Do the masses have an IQ of only 60? My dog would expect more than that to follow a person.
What kind of American is Obama? He attends a racist church which espouses black, black, black and not christian, christian, christian.
Their web site says: The vision statement of Trinity United Church of Christ is based upon the systematized liberation theology that started in 1969 with the publication of Dr. James Cone's book, Black Power and Black Theology. See http://www.tucc.org/talking_points.htm
Obama's membership with a black racist church is NOT American and nor is it Christian.
Have you visited Obama's web site? You'll notice it says nothing about what he stands for. It's one thing to want change but I will only support specific change and want to know the details of what change the candidate intends to push for. Obama clearly doesn't want us to know what his real agenda is.

President of The Harvard Law Review is impressive. Theoretical and lofty writings are impressive. Obama has the potential to be a great leader. Getting your leadership experience at the highest level of power is insanity. Certainly when compared to the average American, Obama is no nobody. When compared to the competition, those that have dropped by the wayside, and other heads of state, Obama simply has not accomplished anything outside of school to write home about. Of course, except for Hillary and Edwards - come to think of it, he does fit in! But would not be there without his blackness. Hillary is only there because of Bill/female. Edwards is only there because of wealth and sexual ambiguity.
GWB was chief executive of the most populous state for six years after running successful businesses and a Harvard MBA. You can rag all day about WMD's, but none of the Dem's would have had the courage to stand up to Hitler even knowing about the camps. Nothing short of a nuke somehow has become the definition of a WMD. Obama wants to make nice with snakes and rabid dogs. He knows olive branch has always been extended, its the other side that has not stepped up to the table with clean hands. He just plays to the crowd.

Re: Colin Powell Praises Obama. Smart Powell, no question about it. The political general repositions himself, again and again, to get the most from the situation. Obama would be easily defeated by any in the GOP field. If suddelly, Obama wins, Powell may get Secy of State again, or maybe VP.

Nevertheless, this endorsement is about as useful to Obama as Lew Rockwell's is to Ron Paul... File it under "Thanks, but No Thanks!"

W never ran a successful enterprise in his Life!!! Saudi Money bailed him out of TWO failed oil companies, and I can provide you the actual documents - with W signatures - that prove it! The baseball franchise was a Gift from Tom Hicks of Clear Channel and numerous shady deals fame. That team only increased in value because the citizens of Arlington took on an ENORMOUS tax burden to finance a freebie stadium, at the behest of Bush Pere and Hicks! W made a nominal "investment" of $100k or so out of his inherited money, and Hicks gifted him a 10% ownership interest! For nothing!
JPoz, you are a complete fool if you think W EVER ran anything anywhere except into the ground. And that includes our economy AND our standing in the eyes of the world. W is and always has been a puppet, a loser, and a drunk. Don't come back to this board without real facts, not Dittohead BS.

Colin Powell on deciding weather Obama is running as a black candidate on why people are supporting him.
What has Obama done?
If they are not supporting him going by his resume of accomplishments. Then they must be supporting him for what he is.
The same reason Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice were demonized by the racist Democrats (a conservative black person goes against the plantation rule)
They want to mold history to their vision not reality their by changing reality.
Obama is a token black man given by the democrats for historical reasons. These are the same racist democrats that attack any black person who tries to tow a conservative line. They simply want an Uncle Tom to tow their line.
Posted by Joeslogic at 01/08/2008 @ 08:32am
As you can see by all the anti-Powel posts this proves my point.
They love to take Powel down to the whipping post. And in the Democratic plantation they police their own quite well.
Posted by Joeslogic at 01/08/2008 @ 08:37am
Obama's greatest domestic challenge, should he win the Presidency, will be coping with the Black Caucus, in all forms. They will be shameless in trying to manipulate him to serve their amorphous agenda. What is encouraging, thusfar, is that he seems to have his own mind well intact. IF he is able to collaborate without capitulating, and IF his legs are not knocked from under him by people of his own race, then there is a chance that an Obama legacy could go a long way toward helping heal, once and for all, the now truly oppressive racial nonsense that stifles too much of our way of life. General Powell's observations are most welcome.

Poor JOE. I guess the Repub field IS as weak as everybody is saying.
Huckabee-- too "creationist" for the sane GOP, too populist and "help the poor" for the regular GOP
McCain-- too old, too liberal on immigration
Romney-- a "flip-flopper from Massachusetts" (too much crow to eat), and too Mormon for the anti-Mormon bigots on the Religious Right.
Giuliani-- too many mistresses, too many marriages, and his "Florida or Bust" gamble seeming to implode.
They hoped to run against Hillary and bring back all their Clinton jokes/scandals (How many times you think we'd hear "Vince Foster"?) or Edwards (How many haircut/mansion/lawyer jokes?).
Now they have to run on "The Dems are racist because they nominated a black guy"....heheh

Mask and Frosty... I sincerely do hope, in the event of his election, Obama is able to turn the tide of racism away from the trend it has been on since the Civil Rights movement triumphed. I hope he will be able to properly handle legitimate interests, while deflating most of the excess that has become so oppressive. Such would certainly be a welcome relief from the ignominy of having to tolerate another 4-8 years of our "First Black President" and his currently candidate spouse.
Mr. Obama appears to have true grit, and i wish him well. Mrs. Obama would make a very fine First Lady as well. At my age, I never thought I'd live to see the day when such a possibility as this could exist in our very confused and contentious homeland.
My personal hope is for an Obama vs. McCain contest in 2008. Either way it went, America would not be embarassed by the result.

It would be a breath of fresh air that would in deed make great advancement in healing the racial divide. But to do so would open up the gates of the Democratic plantation and in doing so risk loosing the iron grip of prejudice the Democrats have on the black people.

Obama isn't running for President as a black man. Oh come on. Then why is he a member of a church that's missions statement begins with the statement, "Unapologetically black". Why does he do everything in his power to shuck off and belittle the family that supported him (that was white) to embrace dreams of his father who he barely knew in order to identify with the Afro-American descendants of slavery - a topic that he knows little more about than what the rest of us learned scholars know but have no personal knowledge of. Why does he pandor to young people who are too young and naive to do the real work of doing the research to find out what this man is (or rather isn't) all about. Give me a break Colin. I truly admire you but this man is not in your league.
Posted by sjbj2322 at 01/08/2008 @ 10:31am
Joeslogic - I am harboring some justifiable (thusfar) hope that Obama CAN keep a balance. He, like almost all other appointees and elected officials of his race from either political party, WILL be "Uncle Tommed" by somebody, for good or ill. But, I perceive that he can thwart or neutralize that baloney... which is the major reason I think he has a real shot. Also, I believe HE knows this already. I don't see the Black Muslims getting in his corner anytime soon, and the NAACP will, eventually, come along once they realize that Mrs. Clinton's biggest electability problem is, was and will always be, her husband.
So-called mainstream and/or middle-class "African Americans" shouldn't be threatened by an Obama presidency because, to date, the candidate seems to be prudent (unlike Senator Edwards) about knowing his administration could not possible survive without their, and all other, entrepeneurial-capitalist financing of initiatives which benefit them directly.
Other than the venerable Shirley Chisholm and Colin Powell, Obama is the first viable black presidential candidate, in the right place with the right stuff at the right time. All the other possibles, from Keyes to Sharpton, and Jackson to Andy Young were either loonytunes or were coming in too deep in debt to racial extremists whose agenda will never, ever, be found tolerable by whites... whose votes they MUST have in order to hold office.
I don't foresee Obama pandering, anymore than McCain would. when in office. And, although a lot of other stuff has been placed (by our media pundits and political party system) higher on the national agenda than race relations, I am feeling a delicate sense that we could be in for some relief from partisan race-baiting. That alone could indirectly contribute to helping us resolve long standing difficulties in tangential areas of interest to everyone.
The Clinton juggernaught against Obama is just now gearing up, however. Stay tuned for some triangulation the likes of which has hitherto been unimaginable.

This whole Obama craze is political immaturity. Obama talks of change and unity, but what does that mean? Change to what and how? By unity and an end to partisanship does he mean he will abandon his leftwing positions? Will he cease attempting to turn America into an extension of Europe? I don't think so. Funny, the Europeans have christened him as the new JFK. Ironically, if he held JFK's postions on economics and foreign policy he would become a pariah in the Democratic Party.

(B) Hillary supporters trying to convey the image that "There's a lot of racists out there, folks, better not let them nominate a black guy!"?
(C) One guy changing his "TN" account and nick?
heheh

Seems like ...

They saw "Colin Powell" and just dropped by. I would have bet this is what "conservative" sites are like, 24/7 ... but then Hillary lost her mind;
"Dr. King's dream began to be realized when President Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act," Mrs. Clinton said when asked about Mr. Obama's rejoinder by Fox's Major Garrett after her speech in Dover. "It took a president to get it done."
This is a milder though typical response;

This lady I'm sure has listened to the shameless interview that Senator Clinton gave to Fox dismissing the role of Dr King in the civil rights movement.
What has happened lately to her campaign? It is parody.

It will probably hit just before polls close ... if she's lucky.

My thoughts exactly... As y'all may have noticed, I am constantly stalked on the internet, by cowards.
I wonder if they realize how easy they are to track?

"Dr. King's dream began to be realized when President Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act," Mrs. Clinton said when asked about Mr. Obama's rejoinder by Fox's Major Garrett after her speech in Dover. "It took a president to get it done."
Assuming that is an accurate quote, it isn't an accurate account - more fashionable revisionism. The Civil Rights Act was passed by Congress because it was supported by the Republican minority which provided the necessary votes despite the objection of the majority of Democrats. That was bi-partisanship; Republicans working with a Democrat president against his own party.
In the meantime, Obama is nothing more than an empty suit. Charming? – Yes. Extreme leftwing? – Yes.

"TN"'s webmaster could check IP Addresses, but it's of no matter. Like the "newbie single-timers" (Ron Paulines, etc.) they come...they go...they are full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Really??!?!? So who would you call a "centrist"?

Mask -
Despite the lack of time or space to begin a course in Political Science 101 to support my answer, I will offer two: Giuliani and McCain - though both have leftwing tendencies. But none of the candidates really have an appreciation of the Constitution which limits the scope of the federal government far more than where it has traveled - especially since the 1930s.

Lets all remember who brought up the race issue at all! the democrats were the ones saying that stuff. Personally i think Obama is a good person , but he definately doesn't have the experiance to be president. He gives great inspirational speaches , but they seem empty of any substance. You have to be honest with yourself , seems like he is drawing a young crowd , which is great! Anything to keep the hillary out of office. But do the majority of his supporters really care about policy?Ask them , which of his policies they support(besides) punishing the rich. And i bet you get an uhh?

Besides Bush hatred, Can any of you dems give a reason why any of your canidates should be pres? I'd love to know. Look at congress, besides wasting our time and money with endless B.S. investigations ,and failure to take away conservative talk shows 1st ammendment rights. What have they done? America sees how Nancy pelosi's districts, gay pride parade, and publics lewd acts, made america look. Look i don't agree with 50% of what Bush has done, especially ,with this stupid outlawing light bulb crap! And the selling of our sovereignty to mexico, and the U.N. We need to come together, and protect this country,as Americans not left and right.

WTF?

WTF?
"Despite the lack of time or space to begin a course in Political Science 101"
Your position has nothing to do with Science, political or otherwise, debate would just be circuitous exercise in futility, as you don't have the standard, of reason, to uphold ... and I do. I'm moving to another thread, this one is full of people who have lost their fucking minds.

Hey V -
Bye, and please take your circumlocution with you.
Posted by malarky1 at 01/08/2008 @ 4:25pm
Good day to you V.
And yes the whole Clinton debacle seems to be winding up to an interesting train wreak to watch. I would think given the possibility of total loss she would opt to be a running mate but after the damage done in the first two years and over the next two years the obvious sad state of affairs that the media will not be able to spin as the fault of the minority party. She would never get another chance. Still she has political favors to pay she is indebted to many.
And Mask for the record I also think Bush has been a failure on many levels. 1. Not standing up to the media using his bully pulpit like Reagan did. 2. Being far too liberal with my tax dollars. 3. Allowing those two boarder patrol agents to sit in jail. 4. Not totally and unequivocally pardoning Scooter Libby. 5. Not having Valerie Plame and Joe Wilson tried on charges of treason.
The list could go on and on. The difference between you and me is I come to my own conclusions you are fed yours by the DNC.
BTW I can hit several remote systems and post from them if I like from Colorado, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, and New York, Ohio.... I suppose it may be vaguely amusing for a short while to do so while observing you in your tin foil hat tinkering for answers to these scary phenomena. Ultimately I'm sure convincing you that I am an agent for some mysterious right wing elite and secrete organization.

Judging in my limited experience reading his posts here I would point out that BlueHawk seems to be a liberal albeit a centrist one. The likes of which actually have some thought provoking points to make. You should pay attention and learn. And step away from that extreme edge you seem to be on the verge of falling from.

"This whole Obama craze is political immaturity. Ironically, if he held JFK's postions on economics and foreign policy he would become a pariah in the Democratic Party."
So true JFK was a fiscal conservative. And JFK was afaik no communist sympathizer. A point that seems lost to the history books. And also the whole Civil Rights bill just how does the left get away with it? Truly most Americans believe that the left owns civil rights. The only explanation is the spin by the media and education system. Ignore it enough or say it enough picking and choosing your facts slowly over time you can actually change if not reality the perception of reality at the least, thereby changing reality as we know it to be.

Yes. Obama is just "an American Man" running for president who happens to be a hard core socialist who wants to raise taxes calamitously on high achievers, which will have permanent and highly destructive effects on the U.S. economy. I don't really care what his race is (unlike Colin Powell and other prominent blacks who "just happen" to support him). It's his politics I find totally unacceptable!
