Texas Gov Goes Giuliani

posted by Ari Berman on 10/17/2007 @ 2:18pm

Fred Thompson outraised Rudy Giuliani in Texas this quarter by a margin of $1.2 million to $970,000. But this morning Giuliani picked up the coveted endorsement of Lone Star Governor Rick Perry, a potential VP nominee.

The Giuliani campaign hopes Perry will help them shore up support among the right flank of the party, particularly social conservatives. Perry said Giuliani assured him that he would appoint "strict constructionist" judges to the Supreme Court, like John Roberts and Samuel Alito.

As I reported in my recent article, "Rudy's Dirty Money," the ties between the Perry and Giuliani camps run deep. Giuliani's new chief fundraiser, Houston day-trader Jim Lee, bundled hundreds of thousands of dollars for Perry's campaigns and was appointed last year to the board overseeing Texas's $96 billion public school employee pension fund. Other top Giuliani fundraisers, like corporate raider Boone Pickens and Texas Rangers owner Tom Hicks, have also donated generously to Perry.

Moreover, Perry has been a major booster of a controversial proposed toll superhighway, known as the Trans-Texas Corridor, which Rudy's law firm, Bracewell & Giuliani, has helped represent.

  1. "Perry said Giuliani assured him that he would appoint "strict constructionist" judges to the Supreme Court, like John Roberts and Samuel Alito."

Rev. Dobson put the skeer into Rudy (prob some Repubs too). Seems not EVERYBODY (despite LVLIB and HAPPY types) is willing to vote for ...

    "the lesser of two baby-killers!"

(Interestingly, this is almost IDENTICAL to the plot-line of the last season of "The West Wing" where a pro-choice Repub gets the nomination "Arnold Vinick" has problems with his Right, and gets his Veep candidate to promise them that "he'll be there to push Arnie in the right direction on judges"!)

  2. Goodness....Abortion-on-demand IS YOUR LIFE's CALLING! There isn't much sense to pound this "the lesser of two baby-killers!"....as POTUS, Rudy will stand pat on the issue anyhow!

Perry's going w/Rudy is pretty big!

What does "stand pat" MEAN, HAPP? That he'll be the new "pro-life kinda" Rudy who's trying to woo the Religious Right...

or old Rudy who favored "partial birth" abortion?

  4. He won't put forth an Amendment either for or against Abortion...seems obvious...thought you'd understand!

Republican candidates united against Clinton By Steve Holland Wed Oct 17, 2:57 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidates have determined who the enemy is in the 2008 election, and her name is Hillary Clinton.

Although they have been squabbling among themselves over who among them is the real conservative, they all agree they want to prevent the leading Democratic presidential candidate from winning the November 2008 presidential election.

Doesn't have to, HAPP....just nominate the "sure thing 'pro-lifer'" DAVID SOUTER type judges that Dubya's Dad did.

I know you're fairly cynical, as I am. Why the rose-colored glasses that "President Rudy" is going to be a Dubya-reincarnate on social issues??? And not his Dad-41?

  7. "President Rudy"

HAPPY has already made it pretty clear (on a thread a few days back). He's willing to ignore Rudy's "past" flirtations with being pro-choice, as long as he keeps us "winning" in Iraq and keeps the Bush tax cuts.

It's the LOVELY dilemma the Right is faced with. Giuliani's the only one who even gets close to beating Hillary (not much lately)...but he's more liberal on social issues than some Democrats.

But "keeping the fight on terror going" (i.e.holding the WH), to HAPP, even LVLIB, is more important than a President who will "sell out the babies"!

all i have to do is read this:

"Freedom is not a concept in which people can do anything they want, be anything they can be. Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do."

Maybe, maybe not....abortion is a much higher priority for the Dems than most Repubs and Indies........Rudy certainly won't be in control of the timing(s)! Anyhow, I sure hope THAT one issue will NOT forever be the basis of how our SC Justices are chosen....kinda sick, really!

You are overly focused on this....perhaps as your assignment here was for.....as you point out, even LL can accept Rudy.....that's just a reality! Overall, I'd NOT want any GOP Nominee to take a hard anti-Abortion stand since IMHO, it will lose more votes than gain. Conversely, a GOP Nominee that takes a strong pro-abortion stand, again IMHO, will gain more votes than lose.

  11. Forgot to add: fighting terror is more important than abortion, but not as important as a strong economy, low unemployment and tolerable inflation!

Voters unhappy with Bush and Congress

Wed Oct 17, 2007 4:32pm EDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Deepening unhappiness with President George W. Bush and the U.S. Congress soured the mood of Americans and sent Bush's approval rating to another record low this month, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.

Bush's job approval rating fell to 24 percent from last month's record low for a Zogby poll of 29 percent. A paltry 11 percent gave Congress a positive grade, tying last month's record low.

  13. Tricky Ricky only won his last election by 39% of the vote. This crook likes to use our tax dollars shift our freeways to tollways, and he's been pushing his Trans Texas Corridor (TTC) land grab on Texans as well.

Okay, HAPP...so the rankings of importance are...

    1. Strong economy

    2. Low unemployment

    3. Tolerable inflation

    4. Fighting terrorism

and maybe, if at all, 5. Abortion and the social issues.

Cool....we now have put the social cons on notice.
