At the risk of suggesting the unimaginable to the unimaginative, the Democrats who would like to unscrew the "Reserved for Hillary Clinton" plaque from the party's 2008 presidential nomination might want to work overtime tonight.
If Clinton's challengers check their calendars, they will perhaps note that this evening's debate at Dartmouth will be the first serious forum of the fall. In barely three months, perhaps less, grassroots Democrats will begin participating in the caucuses and casting the primary votes -- in Iowa or New Hampshire or Michigan or Florida or some other pretender to "first-in-the-nation" status -- that will quickly seal the deal.
Clinton is not the preferred candidate of the majority of Democrats nationally or in most of the early caucus and primary states. But Democrats have a tendency to nominate candidates they don't like. This has something to do with political calculus; remember the passionless decision of 2004 Iowa caucus goers to back John Kerry because he "looked like a winner." Clinton has run a smart, efficient and generally mistake-free campaign and that appeals to discouraged Democrats. Clinton's strength also has something to do with her genuine appeal to certain sections of the party base -- especially young women and some communities of color. But, make no mistake, Clinton is not the ideological soul-mate of the average Democrat.
On most major issues, she stands well to the right of Democrats and independents.
Fortunately, all of Clinton's opponents for the nomination (with the possible exception of the lamentable Joe Biden) stand to her left.
Unfortunately, all of Clinton's opponents for the nomination (with the possible exception of the lamentable Joe Biden) stand to her left.
It is certainly good that there are Democratic contenders such as Barack Obama, who is arguing for more diplomacy and reconciliation in the world and at home; John Edwards, who is striking populist chords; Bill Richardson, who is saying its time to bring all the troops home from Iraq; Dennis Kucinich, who is speaking to legitimate fears about the administration's seeming determination to make war with Iran; Chris Dodd, who has spoken up well and wisely on a number of Constitutional issues; and Mike Gravel, who reminds us that we should fear candidates who speak casually about using nuclear weapons.
But, while those appeals may well attract more than 50 percent of the Democratic vote, the raw numbers favor Clinton.
Consider the latest poll from New Hampshire. According to the survey conducted by the University of New Hampshire for WMUR and CNN, Clinton is at 43 percent. That's a seven point hike since July for the New York senator, suggesting that she's got the momentum that matters a good deal at this point.
Obama is at 20 percent, and slipping; Edwards is at 12 percent; Richardson is at 6 percent. Kucinich is at 3, as is Biden. Dodd's at 1. So is "Other," which is one point better than Gravel.
Eleven percent of likely Democratic primary voters remain undecided.
If this scenario continues, the headline from New Hampshire come January -- or, perhaps, December -- will likely read: "Clinton Sweeps First Primary."
Any candidate who would prefer another headline might want to say something meaningful -- or inspiring, or simply distinguishing -- tonight. We really are reaching the point where there will not be

Ok this was back in late June, but still there's much speculation that Al may be throwing in his hat into the ring come October. Don't anyone count Gore out just yet.

well...its the math...
we have clinton and clinton alone (biden? huh?) who reps the right center, and 6 who split the center-left.
thats hard to triangulate. or...septangulate...indeed.
but strange things can happen.
i dont know what more mr. obama can do or say. if people actually listen to him and read his speeches...how can they not see true virtue?
but without any ideological competition, fifty foot queenie stands goliath-like all alone.

Can Mr Nichols explain this....?
"Clinton is not the preferred candidate of the majority of Democrats nationally or in most of the early caucus and primary states."
Yeah, so? What Democratic (or Republican) candidate usually IS, unless it's an incumbency? Bill Clinton wasn't "the preferred candidate of a majority of Democrats" in 1991. Neither was Jimmy Carter.
(Again, I know this is going to get me put in the FRANKGRITS Her Majesty Is Unstoppable Fan Club....but I'm just talking basic facts!.....And I still hold out hope that John or Barack can make come-back....a slim hope!)

Oh come on, if the in the end, the only choice you had was between Hillary and any of the current repub front runners, barring of course if they get Colin Powell to run, there's no way the repubs can put up a candidate that isn't more steeped in moral and political hypocrisy than that Hillary can approach. So everyone will choose Hillary if that the only real choice.
But then that's why Al Gore will step in.

I just read an article a ways back that said there's no way that Hillary would pick Obama as her VP since the 2 rules for picking a VP are that 1. don't pick a VP that can upstage you 2. don't pick one you can't control... Both of which would rule out Obama.
However Al could pick either Hillary or Obama, but most probably Obama The question then becomes, if Obama wins the nomination would he pick Hillary for his VP...

Gore's speech was scheduled for what seemed like a very appropriate location -- New Orleans.
Then Katrina stepped in. The Commissioners never got to New Orleans. The Vice-President ended up speaking at The Sierra Summit in San Francisco instead. And almost no one needed a lecture on the consequences of global warming-fired hurricane risks."

"When I took a job in the White House in January 1993, there were 49 sites on the Web," says Gore, no doubt engaging in a little bit of Hollywood hyperbole (apparently he learns quickly). "Now there are billions. And when we launched Current TV most people said it would fail, that you couldn't build a TV channel on consumer-generated content. Now everyone is doing it." The point is obvious: Gore is onto something. Better yet, his partner Hyatt, who made a fortune selling low-cost legal services, is clearly relishing the fact that he can make big bucks off of one of the more recent Al Gore "inventions." Jokes Hyatt, "I tell him I want two visionary things a year from now on."

Gore, Schwarzenegger Team Up At U.N.
AP | September 26, 2007 12:12 AM
"Arnie" and "Al," Republican and Democrat, shared the world spotlight to press for climate action, adding a touch of star quality to the staid proceedings of a U.N. summit.
The two headliners, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and former Vice President Al Gore, also highlighted by their presence President Bush's absence from the eight hours of high-level speechmaking Monday on what to do about global warming.
Bush, who did take part later in a small, private U.N. dinner with key players on climate, rejects the idea of international treaty obligations to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other "greenhouse gases" blamed for global warming -- an idea central to U.N. climate negotiations.

Oh my God, HSUB....you're right! It was all me!
I was the reason that Pelosi said something somewhat positive about impeaching Gonzales, instead of something VERY positive about doing it!

Frita does love making them straw dildos. And now tends to take back her "I was wrong! Bush did get enough pressure on him to fire Gonzales."

Gore's Vision for a Global Marshall Plan
At the Clinton Global Initiative's opening session, former Vice President Al Gore called for a Global Marshall Plan to incentive the world for climate change. Thinking out of the box, he is attempting to bring industry, governments, non-profit organizations and everyday people together in a shared vision.
This could be the motivating factor for our diverse and war torn world. It could be the shared vision necessary to lift us up out of the murk. This Marshall Plan could unite diversity, usher in peace, and feed the world economies. Jobs would be created, industry could profit, and the developing countries could find the monies for their people's education and health care.
Government regulations must be adopted. Market mechanisms put in place like cap-in-trade. We need laws, regulations and a new treaty that take action by 2009. This could be the defining moment because we have no choice. The North Pole's ice cab could cease to exist in only 23 years.
It is time to put aside our differences and come together in this global emergency to save the planet. Gore again calls for the President of the United States to lead the world. This could be the home run for the President in the midst of the debacle of our economy and the war in Iraq.

hsub...
i realize this campaign season is starting unusually early and that traditionally speaking, an october declaration of candidacy is reasonable...but...
always a bridesmaid never a bride has its limits...if gorgon does indeed plan to announce in october...
well, considering the polls, i, and i suspect many others who dont like 50 foot queenie, just cant wait around. tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow...creeping along...all the while 50 foot queenie getting stronger every moment.
if gorgon had announced by now, i would have probably been riding the horns of the bull...
but honestly if he's been playing hard to get...he played that game just a little too long...
and if he's been playing that game...he played it a tad too long.

sorry - got distracted there...lol

i think part of the reason goregon has dithered has something to do with his past relationship to 50 foot queenie and her old man...

Zero -
I do not agree completely with all aspects of Clinton's proposed plan, but it does not require you or anyone else to purchase insurance from a different provider. You can keep whatever existing insurance you have.

On Oct. 12, we shall hear again from Oslo, and I will be very surprised indeed if the peace prize is not awarded to Albert Gore Jr. (Don't ask what a campaign against global warming has done for "peace"; that would be like asking what Mother Teresa or Henry Kissinger had ever done to reduce global conflict. The impression is the main thing.)
So, and if I am right, the former vice president will then complete a year in which An Inconvenient Truth has been awarded an Oscar and he has authored a best seller. Roll it round your tongue again: an Oscar, a best seller, and a Nobel Prize in the space of 12 months or so. Not bad. And meanwhile, the field of Democratic candidates looks--how shall one put it?--a trifle etiolated...
...
Apart from the awards, not only could Gore claim that he had been a fairly effective senator and a reasonably competent vice president, he could also present himself in zeitgeist terms as the candidate who was on the right side of the two great overarching questions: the climate crisis and the war in Mesopotamia. Should I add that, whether or not he really won the Electoral College in 2000, he did manage to collect the majority of the popular vote? Several people, some of them well-informed, have been saying to me that Gore will wait until the Nobel committee's announcement before he makes up his mind. Should he make up his mind to run, he could alter the entire equation.

....ANY Dem....I'm voting for them,...
Why does that make me a "HRC supporter"?
As for supporting Obama, happy to....tell me how you're supporting YOUR Republican nominee, and I'll follow suit with Barack!
Posted by MASK 09/26/2007 @ 4:40pm
How does voting for "ANY Dem" NOT make you a "HRC supporter"? As far as is known, she is a Dem, NO? Well, even if you are confused, at least you DID CONFIRM my putting you squarely in the (large) hole marked `Democrats'....
I am Apolitical for the GOP Primaries...have NEVER donated for this stage of an Election. The way I look at it, this stage is for true political junkies, yes, that's YOU, who could have influence on the eventual Nominee for their party. Since you didn't go to bat openly for anyone but did repeat "I'll Vote for her if she's the Nominee" only about 1,800 times, it's NOT a stretch to pierce your MASK and tag you a HRC supporter all along...but in a triangulating sort of way of course! LOL!
Why don't you just admit that Hillary is your girl and I won't dog you so much! I'm sure FRANK and KVH would appreciate it!

We on the right could only hope for ALGORE... Hillary has had the nominee spot locked for 6 years and now TN finally figured out the race is for second bannana seat?
How long before our man BUSHFOOLED suggests that ALGORE will win on election night with the write in vote?
Give it up BUSHFOOLED, ALGORE is a dolt and proves it every time he speaks in public...he sounds even more stupid than Bush and Bush has an excuse..he is dyslexic..ALGORE..it is natural with him..he has a Yogi Bear syntax that is hard to listen to with out giggling, especially when added to his speeche contents or even better yet, his "southern Preacher(black) voice...personally, I think the bolts in his neck are too tight.
Give it up, already...everyone else has...you had no chance..Hillary was crowned 7 years ago.
Bye from China..
Posted by john maasch at 09/26/2007 @ 7:47pm
If Hillary is worried about ALGORE, all she has to do is offer him the number 2 spot right now...this accomplishes 2 things..
1. Kills off the other wanna bes in the,ah, race..and dries up their money flow....
2. Hits ALGORE with a surprise right were it hurts him..in his heart..his head is a brick...it will deflate him and he will then stop living the Harrison popular vote ad nauseum for all of our remaining lives..

Thats the point and it will finish him off in his own mind, finally...he is unelectable..despite Hollywoods giving him an Oscar, if he gets a NOBEL prize, it will dimish the value of all future prizes..since he will obviously send a G-5 to pick it up along with his check, and fly back to one of his homes...his book will be in print for all to see in the futures years as his predictions follow the path of the Millerites....and his dolt image solidifys for the next generation providing laughs for the future.

JoMa,
What are you willing to do for your growing rift with reality when Al Gore enters the race, wins the Nobel? Will you attempt to eat your part of the north pole for solice or just start foot tapping in bathroom stalls along with the rest of your new con repub friends set forever in denial?

This thought has crossed my mind several times, and it profoundly disturbs me. If Hillary Clinton is elected to to the Presidency, the Executive Branch of the government of the United States of America will have been controlled by just two families for a quarter-century. Beyond my whacko anti-royalist/aristocratic sentiments, I am choosing to not ignore the worried feeling I get when I think of her leading our country.
She stands for very little that is meaningful and is capitalizing on the current political climate. She is a political opportunist, playing it safe while the candidates who have pertinent and in some cases (I think) immediately critical concerns talk themselves out of favor with the consistently fickle American Left.
I read once, and I don't remember where (I apologize) that Mr. Gore would not consider entering the race unless it looked as though Mr. Obama was having trouble challenging Mrs. Clinton. If you believe that she could or would take the party and the country in a direction that we do not want it to go in, then I implore you to remember the dedication, leadership, and humanity evident in our former Vice President. If Mr. Gore enters this race, and I hope it is next week, he will have my vote in the primaries... he has proven his worth while Mrs. Clinton has shown herself to be opportunistic and cold.

I do believe there's a need for change and the current poll number will indeed change as they usually do. It's still way way too early to start saying who's won...
Well, unless one says it's Al;)

At last night's debate, fresh off a Clinton vote in the Senate for a warmongering resolution that Bush could easily use as an excuse for bombing Iran, Obama said -- nothing. Thankfully, John Edwards called her on it.
This vote was inexcusable pandering to a right wing electorate who will never vote for Clinton under any circumstances, and a simultaneous stick in the eye to her core constituency. That Clinton is the front runner is an absolute disgrace.
This technique where Clinton laughs at her critics might have worked with Chris Wallace on Fox, but her strained and so obviously feigned attempt to ward off Gravel's shaming her for this inexcusable vote just doesn't cut it. She should be ashamed of herself, and her half-hearted attempt to laugh it off indicated she knew she should be ashamed of herself.
