Sen. Larry Craig Caught With His Pants Down

posted by Max Blumenthal on 08/27/2007 @ 6:30pm

Republican Idaho Senator Larry Craig is the latest Conflicted Conservative in Crisis to be caught with his pants down. According to Roll Call , Craig was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport by a plainclothes police officer investigating lewd conduct complaints in a men's public restroom. He pled guilty to the misdemeanor crime he was charged with.

Craig has faced pointed rumors of same-sex affairs in the past. Craig responded to these allegations with strident denials. Now, as details of Craig's recent arrest emerge, he looks increasingly cock-eyed, so to speak.

This story would not matter if Craig had never used his position to advance the Republican Party's officially homophobic agenda. But he has. Over and over. In November, 2006, Craig flamboyantly endorsed Idaho's successful anti-gay constitutional amendment, HJR 2, which banned gay marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships in his state. Pam Spaulding has more background on Craig's anti-gay voting record here. It's also worth recalling Craig's 1999 interview with Tim Russert in which he mocked Bill Clinton as a "naughty boy" for his affair with Monica Lewinsky.

Craig is up for re-election in 2008. Will his carnality in public restrooms put an end to his career in public life? Idaho conservatives may be willing to reward bigotry, but lying is another matter.

Here's the full story on Craig's men's room exploits, according to the sub-only Roll Call:

According to the incident report, Sgt. Dave Karsnia was working as a plainclothes officer on June 11 investigating civilian complaints regarding sexual activity in the men's public restroom in which Craig was arrested.

Airport police previously had made numerous arrests in the men's restroom of the Northstar Crossing in the Lindbergh Terminal in connection with sexual activity.

Karsnia entered the bathroom at noon that day and about 13 minutes after taking a seat in a stall, he stated he could see "an older white male with grey hair standing outside my stall."

The man, who lingered in front of the stall for two minutes, was later identified as Craig.

"I could see Craig look through the crack in the door from his position. Craig would look down at his hands, 'fidget' with his fingers, and then look through the crack into my stall again. Craig would repeat this cycle for about two minutes," the report states.

Craig then entered the stall next to Karsnia's and placed his roller bag against the front of the stall door.

"My experience has shown that individuals engaging in lewd conduct use their bags to block the view from the front of their stall," Karsnia stated in his report. "From my seated position, I could observe the shoes and ankles of Craig seated to the left of me."

Craig was wearing dress pants with black dress shoes.

"At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot. I moved my foot up and down slowly. While this was occurring, the male in the stall to my right was still present. I could hear several unknown persons in the restroom that appeared to use the restroom for its intended use. The presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right foot so that it touched the side of my left foot which was within my stall area," the report states.

Craig then proceeded to swipe his hand under the stall divider several times, and Karsnia noted in his report that "I could ... see Craig had a gold ring on his ring finger as his hand was on my side of the stall divider."

Karsnia then held his police identification down by the floor so that Craig could see it.

"With my left hand near the floor, I pointed towards the exit. Craig responded, 'No!' I again pointed towards the exit. Craig exited the stall with his roller bags without flushing the toilet. ... Craig said he would not go. I told Craig that he was under arrest, he had to go, and that I didn't want to make a scene. Craig then left the restroom."

In a recorded interview after his arrest, Craig "either disagreed with me or 'didn't recall' the events as they happened," the report states.

Craig stated "that he has a wide stance when going to the bathroom and that his foot may have touched mine," the report states. Craig also told the arresting officer that he reached down with his right hand to pick up a piece of paper that was on the floor.

"It should be noted that there was not a piece of paper on the bathroom floor, nor did Craig pick up a piece of paper," the arresting officer said in the report.

On Aug. 8, the day he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in the Minnesota court, Craig appeared via satellite at a ceremony that took place in Idaho in which former Idaho federal Judge Randy Smith was invested into his new position as a judge on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

  1. What?? Not ANOTHER one? If republicans weren't so dictated by their dogmatic, anti-gay "faith" they could just come out of the closet and live HAPPY lives! Poor gay republicans can't live the lives they secretly wish they could so they tenaciously endorse anti-gay measures. Hmm.

  2. Anybody who would have sex in a public restroom is disgusting. How perverted can you get?

  3. I really don't understand this. If Craig wanted gay sex, why not go to a gay bar or hire a gay escort? How are you going to have sex in a toilet stall without people noticing four feet in one stall?

  5. Always ends up as so with homophobes....

even those kind who claim to be "progressives" but throw around terms like "fruit", "fag", or "mary" as insults!

  6. Sounds UNreal!

IF he is in fact gay, this bathroom `affair' of "he said, he said" is much more believable and Craig needs to go! Needs some kinda backup to his "in the closet" status to make the officers' "in the stall" story stand up! Time for discreetly aimed CCTVs' in public restrooms?! They will come one day...beginning in schools...no more "Smoking in the Bathroom!"

  7. I always find it rather ironic how so-called law and order conservatives are so quick to send non-conservatives up the river, but as soon as one of their own gets busted, their mealy-mouthed backpedaling comes out, and no longer are they the "hang-em first, try em later" types that they usually are.

Or (not necessarily you), "progressives" who point out hypocrisy in a conservative's lifestyle...

but oddly miss the hypocrisy of liberal leaders, like those who talk about reducing CO2 for its global warming effect (even host a movie about it) ....and then pay off their "carbon footprint", while making few changes to their lavish CO2-producing lifestyles...to a company THEY own!

Plenty of hypocirsy on all sides, yet all sides rarely see theirs.

  9. MASK:

Well, I'm not precisely sure to whom you are referring, but I am fairly certain it wasn't me, considering the fact that I live an extremely low-CO2 footprint lifestyle, eat almost entirely locally grown food, and work from home almost full time, so I rarely have to drive more than about 2-3 miles a day (excepting of course, when I go to see clients).

On a related note, I am in the process of designing my own house, which will be 100% off grid, and 100% without CO2 emissions.

  11. According to NICHOLS, "On Aug. 8, the day he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in the Minnesota court..."

Anything other than what Craig pleaded to, remains "he said, he said"! One can have suspicions based on what one wants to believe....IF Craig is gay, I am more likely to be another FRANK and other Libs on this thread, and `convict' based on personal opinion or biases!

Why isn't believable anyway? Gay people are not the only people who lead closeted sex lives or solicit sex in public places.

  13. This is all especially interesting seeing as how there is a paper out of Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania talking about how there were gay domestic partnerships in the Middle Ages.

Perhaps it is time to move away from such rigid definitions of sexuality and relationships?

That will take me another 12-24 months, to find a suitable lot, and secure the appropriate code exceptions and whatnot. I am trying to build this in Pittsburgh, and they are notorious for enforcing outdated code. Luckily, my girlfriend is a bureaucrat and knows all the ins and outs of Pittsburgh building codes.

I'm not much for coincidences when it comes to situations like this. Preachers always get caught with thier pants down. My only suggestion is for people to stop preaching and start living the example they want to see in others. Hypocarcy is the ultimate sin.

  33. Also, Barney Franks indiscretion was over 20 years ago. The issue here isnt how many Republicans vs Democrats are involved in "affairs" (sexual, legal, fraud, ect), its that Republicans continuosly cram thier "Family Values" down our throats. Franks has NEVER said that people should not have sex (private or public). Franks has never endorsed a bill that prohibited sex (private of public). Its the Hypocracy that is at issue here. Republicans need to clean out thier own closets before they try to clean out everyone elses. And trust me, they will never be able to clean up thier own closets, because, as they are learning he hard way, we are all human, and we all make mistakes. Just let me make my own mistakes as long as it doesnt prohibit anyone else from making thier own mistake. Live and let live.

What if Larry Craig was throwing around terms like "fag", "fruit", or "mary" for his political opponents and when called on it, said

And this Guy Republican Senator Larry Craig. DON'T ANY OF YOU REPUBLICANS DARE EVER MESS WITH ME IN A RESTROOM. Hey, I am not prejudiced, it's just that, in a restroom, keep your disgusting Republican feet THE HELL AWAY FROM ME. I don't want you Republicans rubbing your leg against me, like Larry Craig.

HAVEN'T YOU REPUBLICAN SO CALLED "MEN" ever heard of poetry. Why not recite a nice Gay poem. Ever heard of flowers? Flowers are very romantic. Gay men will probably cream themself, you Republicans should just try giving a man a nice flower.

    Posted by conshame at 08/28/2007 @ 7:12pm

  61. That other Republican too, what's his name, the other Republican?

Offering $20 to stick his Conservative Member in a black man's mouth? What is with the INSULTINGLY LOW RACIST PRICE????

IS A BLACK MAN SUPPOSED TO BE CHEAP OR SOMETHING????

    $20???? 20 DOLLARS? THAT'S SLAVE WAGES!!!!

$20??? Oh, I got it wrong. The Republican offered $20 for the Black Man to put his Member in the his Conservative Mouth. Oh.

That is still such an insultingly low price as to be RACIST. These ain't the slave days, white person.

    Posted by conshame at 08/28/2007 @ 7:16pm

  62. Republican wives, I don't feel sorry for them. They get what they deserve for servicing America's enemies.

How'd you like to be the wife of Larry Craig????

Republican children, I feel sorry for them. Growing up in "families" like Republican Senator Larry Craig, Republican Senator Vick, the other guy - the $20 guy...

    Posted by conshame at 08/28/2007 @ 7:19pm

  63. Republicans: DO NOT MESS WITH ME IN THE RESTROOM. I have no problem with you being Gay. BUT, in the restroom, keep your hands and feet to yourselves.

    Posted by conshame at 08/28/2007 @ 7:23pm

  64. Bob Allen - that's the other Republican's name. What the Hell kind of racist slave wage offer is God Damnned 20$.

    Posted by conshame at 08/28/2007 @ 7:28pm

  65. ALOT OF GAY MEN, are able to keep their hands and feet to themselves, in public restrooms.

I know some men who are gay, and NONE of them would ever act like a Republican Senator from Idaho. NONE of them.

MOST gay men are decent, respectful Americans. MOST gay men are decent, romantic, classy....

  68. I SUPPORT the vast majority of Gay Americans. I CONDEMN the activities Republican Senator Larry Craig. MOST Gay Americans go in the restroom, use the urinal, wash their hands and leave. MOST Gay Americans are decent, classy, romantic. ONLY A TINY FRACTION of Gay Americans, like Republican Senator Larry Craig, are disgusting perverts. Republicans, Americans do not want you people grappling with us in the restroom.

This other Republican, Representative Bob Allen from Florida, asking a Black Man for a lick off his chocolate stick, for $20. Was that $20 Confederate? What a stingy, no-class, racist offer.

Racist Republicans, you don't buy a Black Man for $20. Not today. Maybe in the Racist Confederate South.

  72. Okay, you got to respect the old guy's right to consent sex, with whom ever it is, over 18 years of age. However, the ubiquitous FoxNews and other Gop news outlets, so quick on anything that smells from the Dems, tried hard to miss this news for 3 months. Ah, we won't report this, you judge. Read this news.

    -----------

How Did News Outlets Miss Senator's Arrest for Nearly Three Months? By Joe Strupp August 28, 2007 1:38 PM ET

NEW YORK The revelation late Monday that Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested nearly three months ago for allegedly making sexual advances in a men's room raises the issue of how such an action could occur without the press reporting it.

Even Roll Call reporter John McArdle, who broke the story late Monday, admits he only received word of the arrest and subsequent guilty plea via a tip last week.

"You would think in the 24-hour news cycle, something like this would slip through," said McArdle, a four-year veteran of the Capitol Hill daily. "He wanted to keep it quiet, and he almost got away with it."

Even more surprising is that the unreported arrest occurred at a time when Craig was under scrutiny following previous allegations of gay relationships and sexual advances dating back to late 2006, when a blogger accused Craig of having relationships with men. The conservative senator has long denied the allegations.

  73. Someone made the astute comment that anyone having any kid of sexual experience in a restroom is sick. Perhaps, but not if you actually like the smell of feces while performing falatio, as apperantly Larry Craig does.

    Posted by snapperone at 08/28/2007 @ 11:25pm

  74. LVLIBERT1, the Republican Senators you are defending ARE NOT WORTH IT. What they have done is horrible.

LVLIBERTY1, when I go to the restroom, I do NOT want Republicans trying to play with my foot. Keep your DAMNED feet to yourself, Republican Senator Larry Craig.

Republican Senator Larry Craig is a DIGRACE to Gay Americans. THE VAST MAJORITY OF GAY AMERICANS, go the restroom, piss, wash their hands and leave. MOST Gay Americans do not go into a public restroom and start messing with peoples feet, like Republican Senator Larry Craig.

I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH Republican Senator Larry Craig BEING GAY.

If Republican Senator Larry Craig wanted to be a good, decent, law-abiding, classy, romantic, Gay American - I have no problem with that. I am not prejudiced. I don't care what Republican so-called "Men" do in their own restrooms. In your own restroom, do whatever you want. BUT, Republicans, STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM ME, when I am trying to take a piss. I DO NOT want Republicans messing with me in the restroom.

    Posted by conshame at 08/28/2007 @ 11:59pm

  75. LVLIBERTY1, question: Do you think it is racist, to offer a handsome Black Man, a slave wage (less than $25) - to lick his chocolate stick????

Because I do think it IS RACIST. A Black Man deserves reasonable pay.

BOB ALLEN THE REPUBLICAN OF FLORIDA IS A RACIST. (in my opinion)

    What do you think, Lvliberty1?

    Posted by conshame at 08/29/2007 @ 12:02am

  76. Are there no limits for vulgarity on this site?

Why can't we talk about some DECENT AMERICANS, Americans with wholesome sex lives -- instead of Republican Perverts getting busted in men's rooms ALL THE TIME????

    Posted by conshame at 08/29/2007 @ 12:07am

  77. I CONDEMN Republican Senators.

    Posted by conshame at 08/29/2007 @ 12:08am

  78. Bob Allen IS RICH, a big, rich, wealthy Republican. $20. $20. $20. $20 ? ? ?

You Republicans ever heard the Biblical story about Lazarus?

    Posted by conshame at 08/29/2007 @ 12:16am

  79. Lazarus was a poor man, lived during the time of Jesus Christ, he starved to death because of an evil rich man, and the evil rich man was burned alive forever. EXACTLY like the story of Bob Allen the Republican from Florida.

    Posted by conshame at 08/29/2007 @ 12:22am

  80. Bob Allen the Republican of Florida OWES REPARATIONS TO EVERY Black Man he throated for slave wages. How is a Black Man supposed to live on $20? You don't expect a White Man to make a living off of $20!!!

    Posted by conshame at 08/29/2007 @ 12:25am

  81. I DO NOT CARE HOW "GOOD" Bob Allen the Republican of Florida THINKS he is.

    Posted by conshame at 08/29/2007 @ 12:26am

  82. Ok, so he probably lied about his sexual orientation and promoted a right-wing agenda which stripped down civil rights while being gay...

The REAL hypocrisy here however is the social and cultural climate in most parts of the USA. A climate where being gay is seen as inferior to being heterosexual or as ethically bad or even sinful - barring anyone with a deviant sexuality from all higher careers. A climate where your sexual orientation and your specific sexual preferences are subject to public scrutiny and even to laws and regulations - and not seen as the most private sphere of your private life!

It is THIS climate which CAUSES all the cases of hypocrisy by different public servants or christian preachers (in the same way the Catholic celibacy causes cases of pedophelia with priests)!!! By it, people with a sexuality deviant to the allowed mainstream are forced into psychological denial. Part of this 'strategy' is to - wrongfully - marry and have a family plus opting for a carreer which is as far away as possible from the sexuality you're running away from. Which leads to unproportional high numbers of people with a deviant sexuality in religious or political offices. The very same restrictive climate leads to the lack or even absence of establishments where sexual minorities can meet and socialize - which in turn leads to public places like in a restroom being misused for private issues.

I'm sorry, but Europeans like myself will just never understand this kind of discriminatory, moralistic climates. Only very few right idiots raised eyebrows when the mayor of Berlin (and possible next chancellor of Germany) announced that he was gay... In fact, in Germany, only neo-nazis discriminate against gays the way the American mainstream does. That the same mainstream is shocked and enraged when incidents like this one happens, is laughable beyond words, as the moralistic, restrictive climate this mainstream created HAS CAUSED THESE INCIDENTS!!!

  84. ELZIAX, I agree there aren't enough gay bars in Right Wing Republican States - BUT, MOST GAY AMERICANS DO NOT use public restrooms to harass people trying to take a piss.

MOST Gay Americans get dressed up nice, smile, offer a man a nice flower and some poetry, and if he says "No", they just politely move on to the next man. VERY FEW Gay Americans are criminals - like Republican Senator Larry Craig.
