MoveOn Launches Online Townhalls

posted by Ari Melber on 03/28/2007 @ 02:14am

MoveOn today announced it will convene three "virtual town hall meetings" for 2008 presidential candidates to discuss Iraq, health care and energy policy. The meetings will be organized from the bottom up: MoveOn members choose the candidates and questions, and then vote for their favorite. The first topic is Iraq, and MoveOn says it will encourage its members to support and donate money for the candidate "they believe will do the best job of leading us out of the war in Iraq."

The online meetings will be broadcast by Air America, which has generously offered to host both Democratic and Republican presidential campaign debates this season, and MoveOn says the major Democratic candidates are ready to participate if asked. Minor candidates are ready too--rather than wait for an invite to address the town halls, Earlier this week, Rep. Dennis Kucinich cut a video with his "message to MoveOn.org members.".

Standing in a jacket sans necktie before a clump of trees in Washington, Kucinich emphasizes in the video that he is the only presidential candidate who has voted against every bill to fund the Iraq war. "I'm appealing to you to keep in mind that Congress has the power to end the war, and that's why I disagreed with my own leadership, and disagreed with MoveOn's leadership, as to how we should resolve this situation in Iraq" he says. The message comes at a time when MoveOn -- and other progressives -- have been criticized for supporting House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's Iraq supplemental bill. Kucinich is taking his appeal directly to MoveOn members in an effort to recruit online opposition to MoveOn's leadership, which is a very MoveOn thing to do.

One of the chief critics of MoveOn's supplemental stance is John Stauber, executive director of the Center for Media and Democracy, who recently coauthored a widely-circulated essay assailing MoveOn as "cynical" and not serious about ending the war. He told me MoveOn is focused on "bloodying the Republicans" over Iraq to help Democrats win, instead of putting all its energy into ending the war.

But many antiwar leaders argue that the timetable which the House passed, with the support of many conservative Democrats, is precisely the tangible step the country needs to ratchet up the pressure on President Bush and the GOP.

It's hard to imagine how the failure of a more "pure" bill advancing immediate withdrawal would do more to end the war than the success of Pelosi's bill. As Donald Rumsfeld might say if he were a MoveOn leader, (admittedly a big IF), you end the war with the Congress you have, not the Congress you want. Of course, this debate will continue at MoveOn's town halls – the first one is April 10.

  1. Move on? Townhalls? Thats like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson holding townhall meetings...the only ones who show up are the choir, the already converrted and the public to watch the circus come to town and see the loons in action...not very main stream, those Moveon kooks.

    Big joke.

  2. I'm pleased that Air America offered air time for presidential debates. I believe the people at Air America would frame them very nicely. Not that the Republicans will accept the offer, having a keen sense of their own self interest, and I am afraid many Democrats have such a poor sense of their own self interest that they will refuse the offer, too.

The presidential debates have been a lamentable circus ever since the two "major" parties wrested control over them from the League of Women Voters in 1988. This respectable organization would never have booted Ralph Nader from the debates, as was shamefully done in 1996.

"Zero," while the Democratic party is exasperating in its weakness, I believe it needs our help as much as it needs our criticism. The Democrats did not create all the political circumstances that weaken them. I would for my part vote for Greens if I could -- and I do when I can. My favorite vote ever was cast for Ralph Nader in 1996.

How much should we criticize the Democrats as anti-establishment gadflies, and how much should we "pragmatically" support the "lesser of two evils" so as to ward off another regime of Republican rabid dogs? I don't know. Dennis Kucinich's candidacy makes this question more serious, I think. This man deserves much more credit than he gets from anyone in the media (except the "Counterspin" radio program of "Fairness and Accuracy In Media (FAIR)," which recently lauded him). He has a stronger spine than ten average Congressmen put together. Why, then, do people say he has no chance to win? Maybe this is more our fault than his. Maybe some internet "town meetings" could help.

    But… I dunno.

  3. Oops, all you readers who keep an eye on acronyms know I made a mistake. "Counterspin" is produced by "Fairness and Accuracy In REPORTING," not "Media." Otherwise, you'd get "FAIM," which would remind any French speaker of hunger.

Clearly, I was confusing FAIR with the politically rightward-leaning "Accuracy In Media," or AIM. Not a mistake I'd ever make listening to the radio.

Archie...er...John obviously used the wrong analaogy there. Much better analogies can be found in the ones George Bush held when he was trying to eliminate...er...reform social security. Rmemeber when they carefully screened everyone who tried to attend...and kicked anyone who looked like they might dissent? Even arrested 3 in Denver for having the audacity to even CONSIDER speaking a word in opposition.

Those were perfect examples of what the wingnuts think of as 'townhall meetings'.

Hillary and Edwards are getting ready to line up for a 2nd helping of shame. I know Gore and probably Obama will maintain their honor, and condemn an attack on Iran for the disaster it WILL/WOULD be.

Mask and fellow Republicans are thirsting for Iranian blood the way Bushs owners like their oil.

Naderites are too busy protesting against the bill Bush is going to veto, you dont hear any of them talking about a war with Iran. Of course, that fuccker John Edwards - look Edwards, we are going to lose everything, dont go for a 2nd even greater helping of shame. You cant apologize for a mistake the 2nd time. I fully expect Hillary Clinton will abandon decency and speak in favor of an attack on Iran, I'd be less surprised if Bush went against the idiotic idea than if she did.

You believe your own lies, don't you, old lying coward? Rational, good? As I told you before, you're part of the demographic that voted for Adolf, the ignorant petite bourgeoise. You think you're too good to work, you're not bright enough to make it big; so you ally yourself with big capital against labor and, in the end, freedom. Rational people understand the need for government regulations, taxes, unions and all the other things you abhor. You don't like regulations, unions, or taxes? Then come up with a substitute system that fairly recoups the costs capital requires of society to show a profit; correct all the abuses that demand collective bargaining for labor and regulation of industries by government. You are nothing more than a parasite, feeding off society. Without labor you can accomplish nothing. And you wallow in your ignorance, proud as a pig.

The country is stuck in a completely unnecessary war; men and women are dying and getting maimed everyday; incredibly large amounts of resources are being squandered in Iraq. And you're worried about your assets? Kooks, clowns, corporate lackeys--yes, there are, but they would not have launched this inane war. But what do you care? You don't have to do the fighting or dying, right? (Just like Vietnam.) All you have to worry about is the money you make off the labor of others, old lying coward.

  27. NUCLEAR WAR IMMINENT – BEGINS FRIDAY

You don't know what you don't know.

The STORY about British Sailors held captive by IRAN is a LIE. Remember the LIE about Israeli soldiers held captive by Lebanon to justify Israel's raping of Lebanon? Same game, different name. It's all BULLSHIT!

    Think WAY outside the box.

Ahmadinejad works for Israel, they INSTALLED HIM the same way they installed Bush in the US. That's why every word Iran's leader says and every move he makes appears to be provocative toward Israel and the US. He's no mad man…he's a tool of Israel and US. He says and does precisely what we tell him to do – in order to present the APPEARANCE that we are somehow justified in launching an OFFENSIVE NUCLEAR STRIKE AGAINST IRAN ON FRIDAY.

    WAKE THE FUCK UP!!!!!!!!!!!

World War III Starts on Friday – unless PATRIOTS ARREST CHENEY RIGHT NOW.

If the military Generals and Admirals want war, there will be more war than they ever imagined. If they choose to uphold their oath and defend the Constitution, they've got 36 hours to make a difference.

Time is up. World War III starts Friday – and it will coincide with conditions inside the US that lead to Martial Law, through either an Anthrax attack or a phony Bird Flu Outbreak. They are doing this to SAVE THEIR OWN HIDES from the imminent disclosure of their own criminality, including their direct role in 9/11 to serve as the pretext for everything that has resulted.

    STOP THEM!

    TODAY!

  28. Very good LL,

His post earlier reads out of a 60s labor/students march against capitalistic pigs....and those of us who have done our own labor, produced our own wealth, became independent and depend on our selves, created wealth, and high incomes, are some how the losers..losers to big corporations, are too good to work(despite 60+ hours a week),..voted for Nazis, are cowards(with draft numbers of 311)...those of us who actually worked our way through school, believed, when told, work hard go to school, earn a good living and build a good life with in the system, ...believed the common sense approach that there is no free lunch.. that we are the ones who are vilified..those of us who believe unions, while necessary in the 30s, are useless today(I mean , Jesus, a union in govt jobs? to protect aginst what? bad boss?, competetion?, better wages?) Every industry that has a union entrecnched is failing and will not survive...BTW, how are the nations schools doing? good unioon examples?..

LL, these guys are usualy the ones that can't feed them selves and are totaly incompetent..MT fits the bill...I'd bet everything in his posts he tries to describe some of us is really a description of himself...loser, can't make it, so it must be the corporations, oil companys, the capitalist, the "rich"...always someone else has his share...when in truth..the MTs will always be with us and we will have to feed them, always a load, never votes but demands solution from those of us who already FOUND the solutions...thats why he wants our assets...he has none,...and it has nothing to do with cash or monetary items....he is nothing and offers the same..

So, I am off to mingle and celebrate with other capialistc pigs losers...to find a profit. I have tuitions to pay and orders to fill...

and the things I abhor..MTs of the world and those like him here, deeply seated in the kook section, as a danger to us all..for they are the useful idiots..and we pay for them and their errors over and over...

oh well, off to become a better " the ignorant petite bourgeoise."

  39. George Bush at the 2000 Republican Party Convention

Prosperity can be a tool in our hands -- used to build and better our country. Or it can

be a drug in our system -- dulling our sense of urgency, of empathy, of duty. Our opportunities are too great, our lives too short, to waste this moment.

    ...

For eight years, the Clinton/Gore administration has coasted through prosperity. And the path of least resistance is always downhill. But America's way is the rising road. This nation is daring and decent and ready for change.

    ...

But instead of seizing this moment, the Clinton/Gore administration has squandered it. We

have seen a steady erosion of American power and an unsteady exercise of American

influence. Our military is low on parts, pay and morale.

    ...

This administration had its chance. They have not led. We will. This administration had its chance. They have not led. We will. This administration had its chance. They have not led. We will. This administration had its chance. They have not led. We will. This administration had its chance. They have not led. We will. This administration had its chance. They have not led. We will. This administration had its chance. They have not led. We will. This administration had its chance. They have not led. We will.

    ...

And now they come asking for another chance, another shot. Our answer? Not this time.

    ...

America has a strong economy and a surplus.

    ...

We will write, not footnotes, but chapters in the American story.

    ...

Medicare does more than meet the needs of our elderly, it reflects the values of our

    society.

    ...

And those who spend your tax dollars must be held accountable.

    ...

The last time taxes were this high as a percentage of our economy, there was a good

reason ... We were fighting World War II. Today, our high taxes fund a surplus. Some say

that growing federal surplus means Washington has more money to spend. But they've got

    it backwards.

    ...

On principle ... those in the greatest need should receive the greatest help.

    ...

The world needs America's strength and leadership, and America's armed forces need better

equipment, better training, and better pay. We will give our military the means to keep

the peace, and we will give it one thing more ... a commander-in-chief who respects our

men and women in uniform, and a commander-in-chief who earns their respect. A generation shaped by Vietnam must remember the lessons of Vietnam.

    ...

When America uses force in the world, the cause must be just, the goal must be clear, and

    the victory must be overwhelming.

    ...

And our nation today needs vision. That is a fact ... or as my opponent might call it, a

"risky truth scheme." Every one of the proposals I've talked about tonight, he has called

a "risky scheme," over and over again.

    ...

In Midland, Texas, where I grew up, the town motto was "the sky is the limit" ... and we

    believed it.

    ...

And I have no stake in the bitter arguments of the last few years.

    ...

Single moms struggling to feed the kids and pay the rent.

    ...

We will give low-income Americans tax credits to buy the private health insurance they

    need and deserve.

    ...

A hundred years from now, this must not be remembered as an age rich in possessions and

poor in ideals. Instead, we must usher in an era of responsibility.

    ...

Corporations are responsible ... to treat their workers fairly, and leave the air and

    waters clean.

Our nation's leaders are responsible ... to confront problems, not pass them on to

    others.

And to lead this nation to a responsibility era, a president himself must be responsible.

And so, when I put my hand on the Bible, I will swear to not only uphold the laws of our

land, I will swear to uphold the honor and dignity of the office to which I have been

    elected, so help me God.

I believe the presidency -- the final point of decision in the American government -- was

    made for great purposes.

    ...

For me, gaining this office is not the ambition of a lifetime, but it IS the opportunity

of a lifetime. And I will make the most of it.

    ...

Their war room is up and running ... but we are ready. Their attacks will be relentless

... but they will be answered. We are facing something familiar, but they are facing

    something new.

    ...

A prosperous nation is ready to renew its purpose and unite behind great goals ... and it

    won't be long now.

    ...

Our country is ready for high standards and new leaders ... and it won't be long now. An era of tarnished ideals is giving way to a responsibility era ... and it won't be long

    now.

    ...

The night is passing. And we are ready for the day to come.

    Posted by conshame at 03/29/2007 @ 2:37pm

  42. Allegedly British - with this crew who knows if they were even on a boat.

    Posted by conshame at 03/29/2007 @ 2:39pm

  43. I tell you, when Plunger is Americas #1 hope, the only American who has it right, we are in trouble. I dont fault The Nation or anything for not running front page "STOP THE WAR WITH IRAN", I am not a nit-picking Naderite. Not everyone can be as bright as Plunger, and understand precisely what is really going on.

Now in the past, Plunger has posted some pretty silly conspiracy spoofs, and the bit about Israel being behind Aj in Iran is just theatre, but he is 100% CORRECT in identifying the #1 issue that our counrty needs to face right now.

    Posted by conshame at 03/29/2007 @ 2:45pm

  44. I'm sorry, but Plunger is 100% correct?????

    On what?

That Ahmadinejad is a mole for Israel?

That we are going to launch nuclear missles on Iran tomorrow???????

MT, yes to corroborate, I recall as well that MAASCH identified his age as 54 only the other day. Hence, necessarily, he was born in either 1952 or before the end of March 1953.

Nonetheless, somehow, bystanders to the tawdry spectacle of MAASCH's fevered imaginings of being envied (let alone noticed) are supposed to suspend even minimal cognitive functioning in order to believe the following: That this self-described titan of the private sector, this midwestern muj', who boasts tirelessly about his lumbering sojourns across the (miniture?) golf course and indeed across the globe -- a combination of Trump and Bill Gates, in his uniquely bloated sense of import -- is "confused" about his age, when he was born, and/or how to accurately perform the operation (2007-1953)-(2007-1972).

Perhaps he is better with numbers and other symbols when they apply to something more slaient ... like bra-size (44DD, anyone?) ...

  46. Hman,

    Maasch -

    We are all SO impressed

    Posted by HMAN23 03/29/2007 @ 12:11pm

I was answering a question for Chip...as far as my job, I also don't expect anything of value or interest here from the kook section..their posts show their understanding ...

I don't think anyone cares about me in any shaped or form..

I see Lemon balls is babbling unintelligent sounds again....selling arms..hmm, might work...

  47. Maasch-I care about you as a human being, but don't care for your politics or your claim that everyone who disagrees with you is a kook or a loon.

  48. ...as far as my job, I also don't expect anything of value or interest here from the kook section...

Your job? You mean scrapping a profit off Third World labor. Hell of a job.

    Posted by mtspence05 at 03/29/2007 @ 4:13pm

  49. NOBODY,

Disagreement with me does not earn one a seat in the loon or kook secvtion and a hat with a propellar on top(a red one)...being a loon or a kook does....not many here are loons or kooks, but here is where they congrigate.

Well, GLENN....the ramblings of NOBODY are so open to interpretation you might be right or I might be. Of course yours is the more charitable "twist", so no doubt you'll be credited for your keen insight....while I will be scorned for assuming it sounded like what it sounded like.

    hehe

  51. HMAN....I HAD to peek given CONSHAME's gushing over PLUNGER....here's my favorite part (although the "non-existant" British sailors being held by "Israeli-controlled" Ahmadinejad is a close second)--

"Time is up.

    STOP THEM!

    TODAY!

Better pack up the kid and wife...could take me upto 15 hours to make it to the Canadian border by morning, when WW-3 starts!

    Posted by Mask at 03/29/2007 @ 4:30pm

  52. NOBODY,

I also care about you as a human being and a fellow American..I don't care for your politics and am capable of separating you from politics...and buy you dinner or drinks in a friendly spirit.

Posted by john maasch at 03/29/2007 @ 4:31pm

  53. Before you claimed you are 54. In 1972 you would have been 20. High draft number, only 17? Which is it. You're a liar, a war dodger, a coward--that much is for sure.

I'd much rather be with an honest Egyptian, Russian, Iranian or anything else than a lying, coward American. People like you give the rest of us a bad name.

Just having a little fun, not that there is anything wrong with having pride your work!! I just started to have flashback's of Liberty discussing his "ministry."

    Posted by Hman23 at 03/29/2007 @ 5:19pm

  55. No offense, but you people are not making much sense.

What gives? Got anything meaningful to talk about?

    Posted by USAPRIDE at 03/29/2007 @ 5:29pm

  56. Good night everyone. Enjoy your last night of freedom before tomorrow ushers in WW-III and martial law is imposed!

  59. Okay....going to give PLUNGER the benefit of the doubt and wait until 11:59pm Greenwich Mean tonight before saying anything....hehe
