The Notion

Palin as the Church Lady

posted by Leslie Savan on 11/20/2009 @ 4:40pm

You gotta give Sarah Palin's book tour credit for one thing: It's really putting the passive-aggressive instincts of the religious right on public display.

And not just because she spends much of her 432-page book blaming campaign media flacks and hairdressers, bless their cinder-black hearts, for the McCain/Palin ticket's loss in 2008. Here's Sarahcuda talking up Going Rogue for the Christian Broadcasting Network this week, reproving her critics by saying, "These are probably some lonely people, some shallow people who want to take a shot like that, and we need to pray for these people."

The former (for half a term) governor of Alaska sounds a bit like the Saturday Night Live Church Lady, who pretended to be generous and devout but was always on the verge of boiling over with resentment, even barely contained violence, for anyone whose demeanor she considered insufficiently pious. (What would Dana Carvey's character have said about Palin's too-tight skirts and stiletto-heeled red pumps, I wonder?)

On the Sean Hannity show that aired the same day, Hannity asked Palin about David Letterman: Would she "have anything to do with him? Because you're a Christian. You want to, you want to forgive people."

"Well, certainly," Palin fumbled, caught off guard, as she tried to pass the forgiveness buck to God, by saying, "Forgiveness and vengeance isn't mine." But with her next breath, she denied one of Going Rogue's undeniable motifs: "I'm not out for vindication," she claimed--but no way would she give Dave the high ratings she can always deliver by going on his show.

This kind of passive-aggressive religiosity (which comes, of course, in Jewish, Muslim, and atheist varieties) has been around for generations. But as conservative evangelicals lost their faith in George W. Bush and witnessed the rise of Barack H. Obama, their wrath has been on the prowl for somebody to blame.

Take, for example, the "Pray for Obama" merchandise--the bumper stickers, T-shirts, Teddy bears, mouse pads, and other paraphernalia that have been popping up across the country, telling you to pray for POTUS specifically with Psalm 109, verse 8, which reads, "Let his days be few; and let another take his office." The next verse continues, "Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow." On The Rachel Maddow Show, former right-wing evangelical leader Frank Schaeffer likened this to "trawling for assassins."

For at least the past 10 years, the megachurch evangelical movement has been telling its parishioners that Jesus wants them to get rich. That fit rather nicely with the triumphalism of Bush/Rove & Co. as it built its "permanent majority" with their votes, testifying that it was their all-American duty to trample the environment and the poor, and to kill Afghan and Iraqi Muslims, on the way to God's kingdom. In imitation of the way Bush paid for his wars, many of the devout simply loaded themselves up with debt, buying SUVs and McMansions in spanking new developments.

Since the capitalist collapse, of course, that debt has become toxic. Now, in their dismay and confusion over having supported Bush--one of the first governors, by the way, to declare an annual state "Jesus Day"--evangelicals are left with a terrible anger. And they desperately don't want to turn that anger inward.

Instead, some of them want to smite Obama because they can't admit that Bush led them, lemming-like, into a betrayal of Protestantism's founding belief. Debt, trade, and the work ethic were all central to the disputes that launched the Reformation, after all. The Catholic Church preached that bank interest was "usury," that it would corrupt society and impoverish the people, and the early Protestants were sensitive to this criticism. In compensation, they hemmed in their financial speculations with strict condemnations of personal excess--whether through sex, drink, cards, dancing, sumptuous dress, or what have you--in order to project a prudence that would make economic risk seem manageable, even respectable.

And now we have the Great Unraveling. As the waters recede, what's left behind are follies like the "Drowning Jesus" (a/k/a "Touchdown Jesus"), a 62-foot-high sculpture of Christ set chest-deep in a reflecting pool at the Solid Rock Church in Monroe, Ohio, one of the non-coastal states Palin is visiting on her book tour. And who's to blame for that embarrassing excess, constructed in 2004?

I know: ACORN.

  1. Know who else is into Jesus - the blacks. Not just the regular blacks, the Haitians and West Indians too.

You should cruise around SE Queens and see all the churches. Churches on every corner. English-speaking, Creole, Spanish. Just disgusting, all these black fascist Christians. I can see the hatred in their shifty eyes as they exit their temples of hatred. You know they want to kill a faggot. That's the only reason they go to church, to hear some little black hitler talk about killing faggots.

Oh, don't get me started about the church ladies with their big church hats. God how i hate them, with their fancy hats of bigotry!

I have never seen so much fear of a woman who holds no elective office, has no job, is beautiful, sleeps with her own husband, has more experience than the current clown in the WH,and has general appeal to the average woman or man today....so much fear from the lunatic fringe here on the left, that there must be something to fear...

the way they and their buddies in the press have savaged her and her family(11 "investigative" reporters fact checking her book, and NONE of Obie 3 life storys, or anyone else on the left?)...maybe we should put them to the task of looking under ALGORES skirt...its getting a little short these days..

Sarah Palin will never be the president of the US, but she will most likly serve in the next Presidents Cabinet and will most certainlt have a major part to play in the the election...perhaps the era of collectivism is threatened by Sarah?

So many articles and TV talk shows full of ridicule..have given her an admiration level amongst the genersl population the left can only drool over.

Intellectuals, and intellectualism, are always targets of rightwingers and fascists. Hitler went after intellectuals in Germany, not only because a significant percentage were Jewish, but because the human animal is easier control with nationalistic emotions. Those who question such nationalistic behavior intellectually, single themselves out as "enemies." Thus it was in Hitler's Germany, thus it is in America today: liberal intellectuals have been called traitors and worse, by people like Ann Coulter, who would rather Republicans rule with fear (which they did for eight years), than try to give strong intellectual thought to matters facing our country, both right and left, and create solutions to those problems.

You see, without someone to "blame" for the ills of the world, conservatives wouldn't have a leg to stand on (and neither would many liberals). Intellectuals are always an easy target because they usually don't share the simplified faith of the masses; intellectuals are usually liberal; and to be honest, people who are not intellectuals are always intimidated by them: notice it's the stupid bully who beat up the smart kids, not the other way around. That's human nature, unfortunately.

Only when we have a world full of people with intellectual curiosity, will we have a world at peace. And we all know that peace is bad for defense contractors and organized religion.

Stephen, that was a true gem of a statement.

Long before people get busy fixing the ills of this world, they will get busy blaming other people for everything that's wrong. It's the most consistent and oft repeated human failing.

Princess Sarah uses this tactic constantly. It's always someone else's fault. It's that darn 'gotcha' liberal journalism. It's Levi's fault. It's John McCain's fault. It's Katie Couric's fault. The script on SNL wasn't very funny. Wah.

Her perfection is stunning. Is 'she' the Lord, cross dressing in his second coming?

It also seems that the most repeated proof of her qualifications is the fact that she's 'beautiful'. It's either an oedipal fixation or just plain masturbatory politico-pop-porn at work here.

I enjoy the ranting from both sides, including my own. I think the truth is... is that the role of 'politician' has just done plumb wore out, and wore US out as well. Now we just want out Mom! And for her to make everything better! Sa-a-a-a-rah!

You may be right, many of us feel the same about Obama and his cabal....

the difference, is you guys voted for yours...and as much as many of us like how Sarah handles herself and how she stands for what she thinks is correct, I don't think you will see the syncophatic behaviors the left exhibited or the 99.9 % black voters lock step for the dems and Obama, among the Sarah admires.

I admit it took Sara to get me to vote for McCain...however, I would not support her for President today any more than I would anyone on the left.

The Darlaloon and Denise, the double D's dimwits.....are in no position to make jokes about anti intellectualism..since Darla has demonstrated an uncanny inability to comprehend the world we live and Denise is just another uneducated non achiever hoping for those who took time and made the effort to educate themselves and put themselves in a position to pay for their own needs...and have something left over for the drive for excellence and more than just getting by, to pay for her demands.

Nothing you two dumbkopfs have ever posted would cause the word "intellectual" spring to mind...lock step left is the vision.

  24. The Church, of course, is a business and like any other business, it needs customers. Christians have been sitting around making up pure horseshit for centuries and marketing it to other hateful, bloodthirsty self-worshiping hypocrites, to the point where their 'Business' is little more than a social club for those who have no friends in the real world. The great thing about self-worship, however, is that it's self-destructive; which is exactly what is happening to The Church and to Ms. Palin.

Another way to look at it is that Big Religion is one of the central elements of a fascist state, as defined by Mussolini. Big Government in bed with Big Business and a Big Military doing the bidding of Big Banking and Big Religion. Mussolini must be SO proud.

  25. Imagine, if you can, an Obama - Palin debate. The sexual tones, the bizarre behavior from the right before & after, her utter bankruptcy ... her "rape" by him. Talk about a stimulant for rednecks (as if they need any) ... it would be back to the days when Nat King Cole was allowed to have his own TV show, but he couldn't be seen touching a white woman.

The GOP deserves her, they can self-destruct together ... on their way to the bank.

  26. America's elite and Palin-haters everywhere should not be so quick to dismiss or disregard the future of Sarah Palin. No other national political figure so completely fills Middle America's vacuum of frustration and hate for the Left and Right as Sarah Palin.

Middle America has been abandoned by the Left and Right, who have saddled it with a $700 billion taxpayer bailout, an unnecessary and costly war, a soaring deficit, and an overall neglect of the pocketbook issues that impact Middle America every day. Where are job creation, quality public education, affordable healthcare, and fiscal responsibility, to name a few?

Middle America is mad as hell at the Left and Right and they just might be willing to roll the dice on someone like Palin, who lacks an Ivy League education, is a working class hockey-mom with a disabled child, and who has blue-collar roots like many of the folks in Middle America. The status quo on the Left and Right have produced nothing material for Middle America, which may toss conventional wisdom into the toilet and throw the lever for Palin, figuring it has nothing to lose, and it may be right.

We can say what we want about Palin, but no Republican in recent history has created such frenzied excitement across the country as she has. Just take a look at the fervor she stirs as she wheels across Middle America on her book tour.

Perhaps this is a misreading of the tea leaves, but one could argue that she creates a wee bit more excitement than Mitt Romney or Mike Huckabee, the two Republican front-runners for president in 2012. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed woman just may be queen.

That's why she's such a perfect fit for the barking mad faction of the GOP. They need an enforcer to do their bidding.

Dubya was unintelligent to be sure but he was no rube. He served the moneyed interests not the fanatical flagellants of the teabag set.

She is currently studying up some constitutional cliff's notes and sharpening her talons.

The likelihood that she will become POTUS doesn't depend on her, as much as it does on the conditions in the United States.

  41. Palin the matriarch and, particularly, the mother of a Down Syndrome child does have an impact on a segment of the population that is much maligned by the MSM.

She appeals to a sense of morality which is, yes, highly spiritual, and which does not depend on government.

Anecdotal: when I was in my pre-teens, my parents for a time attended a couple Evangelical churches. Prominent in these churches were very large adoptive families, many of whom adopted multiple children that were disabled or with birth defects.

Some of these people probably had wacky ideas about rock and roll or maybe flirt w/ apolacypse weirdness, but they were probably some of the most selfless people I've met.

  42. Best I've read lately on the subject;

Sarah Palin is neither savior (that job has been taken by the current president, or didn't you know?) nor is she satanic. She is a politician, a species of human like the rest of us.

I'm fairly certain that if you read many of her public-policy positions but concealed her byline, many of her worst enemies would say "that sounds about right," and some of her biggest fans would say "that sounds crazy." But most people would say that her views are perfectly within the mainstream of American politics. She may be more religious than coastal elites in the lower 48, but that is something some bigots need to get over, anyway.

I'm happy about the books she's selling thanks to the controversy over her, but that doesn't mean I think these controversies are justified. Palin holds no public office and, as of yet, is not running for one. But the Associated Press assigned eleven reporters to "fact-check" her book, while doing nothing like that to fact-check then-candidate Obama's or current Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's no doubt riveting book.

    Posted by BigPasture at 11/21/2009 @ 01:23am

  43. She can sell all the books she wants, it's when she starts burning them that problems arise.

Whatever you say about her just being a politician may be true to an extent, but she is appealing to the far right for their support. She may even splinter off of the GOP and develop her own party or run with the conservatives that blew that Rep. race in NY.

Man, just how many Fosters does it take to continue on like that? Sort of funny, though. She's the goods, all right. I hadn't quite heard her referenced like that before. Fawning admiration like that seems premature. Remember what happened to some Obama supporters? But your point almost makes sense, in a weird way. If we keep repeating the same mistakes... why not make a bigger one? Two rights don't make a left, but three do.

There's this Crocodile Dundee effect going on in your last post. Kind of fun. Go catch me a cane toad, mate.

  45. Fish, she's an empty suit, like Obama, like Bush.

Palin is townie identity politics for Repubs. Until Bam the Dems had been putting up shitkickers exclusively clear back to LBJ. So what's the big deal?

    Posted by gangpapist at 11/21/2009 @ 12:39am

Now, this is just me, but... I'm getting tired of the old 'Fearless Leader' routine. So I have nothing supportive to say about the ex-governor.

The persona of the politician has reached a moment where it is so tarnished and diminished by crass financial imperatives, so bound by principles that the everyday person is not privy to, that it is quickly becoming useless as a device to promote any forward movement in our society and, instead, increasingly serves only as a springboard for division and polarity.

I feel that way about all of our presidents, and I feel that way about the Palin phenomena. And when America makes the mistake of listening to someone like Sarah who has no real ideas, then we say as a nation 'I don't care if she has any ideas'. And then there's this other effect: LR up there is thinking like she's queen material. I got a kick out of that when I realized the subtle implications there. We're gonna have a queen! Full circle, I tell ya! Then England, the United states and Australia AND Canada can form a giant new empire to squash the asian threat!

I have to admit to agreeing with you about the empty suit thing, all around. I guess that's what I'm talking about as well. A sad state of affairs.

    Really?

List her accomplishments. Not a comparison to liberals, just hers as the New Leader of the far right. She is running now a the next talk show hostess, not a political figurine.

What she is is a well rehearsed repeat-o-meter that barely has a new thought. Watch/listen to her on various outlets, she has the same mantra over and over and over, while saying little. Methinks she is hoping for change.

But, for many folk, following Sarah The Empty Slogan fits neatly with eschewing science in favor of the Words of Mud Hut Dwellers from the Time of Birds is Bats and disease is caused by God. She too is UNDER ATTACK from most of America while claiming to represent most of America.

I note again that Jenna Jameson showed more intellectual clout and business savvy than "I'm not a quitter" former governor!!

Which brings up another good point...Jenna Jameson represents a difficult representation for the American Taliban...on one hand she lives the American Dream. She supplies a good that is clearly desired by the consumers of America and has become very wealthy working within the capitalist society.

But, she does it with sex!!

If she did it with depictions of violence the American Taliban would worship her as they do Chick Norris and Jesse Ventura. But, as she does it with pleasure I am sure the cons detest her and what she stands for.

Sarah Palin is highly unlikely to ever be either a nominee or president. However she is an authentic voice (not the Leader as some leftists suggest) for conservatives in this country. And as the Gallup polling shows, conservatives once again are the largest segment of voters in the country.

As others here have noted, the left appears genuinely frightened about Gov Palin despite their attempts to deny it.

Is that what I think it is? "My wife really doesn't like to think... or, at least, not too much". I'll bet that her and you don't have that discussion too often. Ha!

Conservatives here are protecting Palin because they don't like women who think too much, it seems. I'm still waiting to hear what she's supposed to stand for... except anti-intellectual comfort food, especially for those 'male dominant' facets of the world society. Sort of a weird reflection on the Taliban, when you consider it. When will a burqa be in the Eddie Bauer catalogue?

I saw the Barbara Walters interview last night. If Palin would just say something besides the Mom and apple pie thing she might actually gain traction instead of just reenforcing her image as a phony firebrand. Yes, I can't wait for 2012. Even though running for president is supposedly not on her radar, the rest of society will be able to clearly identify the troglodyte squad here in 'our' America. And that, at the very least, serves an important function.

    Run, Sarah, run!

  72. from the article on touchdown jesus...

"A 62-ft. high sculpture of Christ appears to explode from the dirt behind the amphitheater at Monroe's Solid Rock Church. From the waist down, he's underground...."

    and...

"Lynch has created other larger-than-life sculpture in places such as Las Vegas (Caesar's big Neptune) and Disney World. Church leaders believe it is the World's Largest Christ (or at least the W.L. half-buried Messiah) and have submitted it for consideration for a Guinness World Record."

    now, lets wiki "christo redentor"

"Christ the Redeemer (Portuguese: O Cristo Redentor, formerly Portuguese: Christo redemptor) is a statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; considered the largest art deco statue in the world.[1] The statue stands 39.6 metres (130 ft) tall, including its 9.5 metre (31 ft) pedestal, and 30 metres (98 ft) wide. It weighs 635 tons (700 short tons), and is located at the peak of the 700 metres (2,300 ft) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city. It is one of the tallest of its kind in the world. The statue of Cristo de la Concordia in Cochabamba, Bolivia, is slightly taller, standing at 40.44 metres (132.7 ft) tall with its 6.24 metres (20.5 ft) pedestal and 34.20 metres (112.2 ft) wide. A symbol of Christianity, the statue has become an icon of Rio and Brazil.[2] The statue of Christ the Redeemer is a very important symbol of Brazil's Christianity. [3] It is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone.[1][4][5]"

christo redentor is often sacriligiously referred to as "el zobaco de cristo", zobaco meaning something akin to "underarm funk" as a result of the statue's pose with arms held wide...

OK, then what happened in the last election if all of those people are really conservatives? What happened on Wall street, come to think of it? Unless, of course, the financial collapse was all the fault of the g-dless liberals. Obama wasn't the president yet and the system was already in free fall because of good old American greed and corruption. Besides making armaments and killing things, that is our greatest industry.

The lefty cracker MSM feels a strong sense of ownership of how folks what ain't old fat white guys are allowed to think, so it pounced.

They also feel that they own sexuality, which is supposed to be a lure away from backwoods values and into the highly enlightened world of todays mindless twittering "smack that" pop culture. In the right scenario, our cultural betters even believe that they have a right to enlighten our children without their consent. The subtext of the Polanski defense seems to be that the West coast elites believe the great artiste, by opening the hillbilly girl's anus (something she may never have consented to, given the choice), opened her mind.

The MSMs histrionic response to Palin is the equivalent of acid in the face. Not because she didn't cover her hair, but because she is not their tool for exploitation. She represents something that pre-dates the corporate, choreographed kiddie porn that the elite tastemakers who once opined on serious art, music, and culture, have rushed to embrace in the just the last decade, and she must be destroyed. Note the ecstatic glee over her daughter's unplanned pregnancy.

Sarah Palin, a woman definitely into keeping the MSMs laws of feminine cool off her body, committed the ultimate crime against "girl power." Where the bitch should be making "transgressive" sex tapes (banal), she instead spreads those healthy gams to pop out a hideous fu**in RETARD (rogue). More acid please! The right wing nuttery has stolen the Christian message twisting it into the egotistical and bourgeois message of "I have the right to earn all the money I can even if it means drowning on debit card debt 75% of the American people...of course I do my Sunday Church visit.....and I don't feel repentant of anything I do."

If one blindly opens just about any page in the Gospel, chances are that Jesus will be telling us to be compassionate, and to repent of anything we did that was not magnanimous enough, or of anything that we could to do to save someone and we did not. This is the core of His message: "Love thy neighbor, and do anything on your reach to help him/her...I will appreciate that."

Anyone that is not able to see the wrong he/she has done in his/her past and that is happy with "creating material wealth to be richer every day" is as far from Jesus.....as Satan aka in the USA as "The Republican Party".

That 'pray for Obama' thing is so nauseating....yes, we liberals did not like Bush because of one thing: he lied, lied, and lied. But none of us wanted him to die. And less of all, none would use religion to incite hatred and homicide. That is the exact opposite of Jesus's message. So I invite religious people of all creeds to analyze what your pastors tell you and compare it to what actually Jesus - or any other Prophet- tells you, utilize your reasoning and don't be fooled.

  90. NEW YORK (AP) - "Going Rogue" is going big.

Publisher HarperCollins said Friday that Sarah Palin's memoir sold 300,000 copies its first day, among the best openings ever for a nonfiction book. In 2004, Bill Clinton's "My Life" debuted with sales of 400,000 copies. The year before, Hillary Rodham Clinton's "Living History" started at 200,000.

"Going Rogue" was released this week and its print run already has been increased from 1.5 million copies to 2.5 million, HarperCollins announced Friday. Palin, the former Alaska governor and GOP vice presidential candidate, is in the midst of a nationwide promotional tour.

    Keep knocking her.

This is a great thread for determining what makes your average Lefty tick. My poor mate Fishie, who is obviously terrified of powerful women, is going frantically around whistling up the chimney to stop his knees knocking together (can't fool us Fishie) as he contemplates this universally popular women.

And you, you sweet cussin little thing, just wish you were as attractive to men as this "unique mixture" woman is.

    What makes a Lefty tick?

Here's what I gleaned from this thread. Irrational fear, envy, jealousy and the consequence of the latter two, hatred. Contrary to your feigned opinion it seems she brings out the best in men and women to whom she serves as a role model. So who's afraid of the big bad Palin? No need to put your hands up, you've already given yourselves away.

My view of any political leader is that most are mere figure heads and the real power lies with the party and the advisers. Thus Palin would probably do no better and no worse than most you have had. I'm not a prophet or a voter but I agree with Liberty that she is unlikely to be the GOP nominee for the simple reason that she is too independent. For Lefty's, who are the ultimate in group think, that is also a crime.

Sarah Palin had more executive experience that the present occupant of the WH. She is no less gifted as a leader than any of the other Governors who have advanced to the WH.

I'm not saying that she will even run. But I think that by the time the next election rolls around, Obama will be so weakened for his failures that the WH will be ripe for a new occupant. He's another Jimmy Carter. Sarah can stump for any candidate that shes deems worthy and draw crowds equal to or surpassing the crowds that Obama drew.

If Palin studies up on details so that some leftist reporter can't trip her up with a loaded question, I think she will do just fine. And she won't have to run around shouting 'Yes we can' like the robotic hoards who backed Obama. CAN WHAT?

Did you know that the AP sent eleven fact checkers to peruse her book but zero to check out the two books that Barack Obama supposedly wrote.

Right now Sarah Palin is in the infancy of her popularity. Her next book will deal intrinsically with policy. Voters will be able to judge for themselves if she is grounded in common sense as she claims to be or if she is all over the map.

One thing is for damn sure. Ever since she has arrived on the scene, she's captured the imagination of the entire nation for better or worse.

The leftwing attack machine will run it's course. sooner or later, a republican candidate will emerge. If it's Sarah, I will look forward to her debate with Obama so that she can point out all the campaign promises that he broke and the lies he told about taxes. She already made mince meat out of Joe Biden. If The McCain canpaign let her loose she may very well have brought that election home.

GWB is a distant memory. Read her book.

Jesus preached all the opposites of what Palin has come to represent. Christ represents--love, not hate, oneness, not division, truthfulness, not lies, common humanity, not us verses them, sincerity, not manipulation, humility (recognizing one's flaws), not unbridled ambition, service, not inordinate ambition to lead others, forgiveness, not vindictiveness and settling old scores, and more. As for others being "shallow," this woman personifies it in a big way. Is it not the very reason why people rejected her big time in the election of 2008 and indeed rejected McCain for selecting her as a running mate. Surely, Palin is delusional. Do we need to say more? Thomas Aquinas does the same, and although I don't agree with everything in Summa Theologica, it gives me insights.

Christianity in the US is intellectually bankrupt. The United Methodists, among others, have reached the ridiculous conclusion that their beliefs are no better than anyone else's. What kind of moron believes something he doesn't think is right or better than competing beliefs? The evangelical, fundamentalist and pentecostal churches pride themselves on their ability to hold beliefs that have no rational basis. They actively oppose supporting their beliefs rationally, and so have adopted New Age epistemology, if such a thing exists. If somebody points out that beliefs that are devoid of any rationality are simply a matter of opinion, they get mad and offended and counter the statement by accusing the person of being unsaved or worshiping his own mind. At least he has a mind to worship. Lack of rationality leads to Heaven's Gate and Jonestown. This is why they can fawn all over the right-wing politician of the month. It is very difficult to dumb down Max Lucado. If you don't know why, take about 5 minutes to read a few of his books in their entirity.

I've been a bit busy today and just got home and had almost forgotten your post until Father Tom with his proud boast of being an intellectual reminded me of the tremendous difference in our cultures.

Australians generally are afflicted with the tall poppy syndrome (cutting tall poppies down to size) and unlike Americans compensate by understatement. A true hero over here, when asked if he was a Thomsian Intellectual would, though he may be a specialist from the Vatican's School of Natural Theology, reply; "No bloody way mate, I'm just a brickies labourer"

Some refer to that as the Aussie cultural cringe. So it may help you to understand why no Aussie man or Aussie woman, unless waterboarded, would "ever admit to being an intellectual".

Incidentally I married my wife for her body. That's OK Aussie speech.

As far as Palin goes I think Leslie Savan is playing us all for suckers with the Church Lady bit. The Nation really does a tremendous job with the prolificacy of its articles and is well served by its journos in that respect. They are obviously not in a very active journos Union. They would strike in Australia.

However I bet she smiles all the way from that headline to the bank. This one I see as a bit of fun for all - not to be taken too seriously.

How an intelligent person could read "We want Sarah to run in 2012" as evidence of "fear" is truly beyond my simple brain. Maybe it goes in the same logic path as seeing the forged Niger documents as "proof".

Is this more in line with basing "core values" on myths, metaphors and squishy ethics? As I read this blog I keep seeing this line that liberals "fear" Sarah, but I keep reading liberals laughing at her and those that have a strong desire to be one of her followers. Where does the disconnect come from? Why do people want to climb on the Sarah bus, when she has no policy statements to follow, little experience to judge by and is offering little but platitudes and sound bites?

Oh, sorry, I forgot the Bush years and the sycophantic clamor of those that loved GWB but now call him a liberal. Why do they call him a liberal BTW? Because the conservative policies he pushed failed and they do not have the intellectual honesty to admit it, so they revert to the easy button, fear and hatred of "the left". It rights policies and candidates failed it obviously isn't the fault of their ideology, it MUST be that the failed ideology is actually "leftist". If it were otherwise they would have to reappraise their own ideology and that would take self reflection. They don't do self reflection, they do blame.

  137. There's a boring football game on, so I'll confide to you guys, cause you're special, a secret.

I have personally made love to Sarah Palin. It was a deeply spiritual experience.

You know that scene in "The Rules of Attraction" where that dorm-room jumkie guy shoots up some smack and starts yelling, "I can feel my dick! I can feel my dick!"

Well it was nothing like that. It was like my purest, most basic emotions: my hatred for towelheads and homosexuals, were stripped down to their rawest, nakedest form, the quivering, pink, larvae of bigotry, then drained of their precious hateful essence, freebased, and shot through my veins. A lightning bolt of white supremacy bullet trained up my spine and exploded inside my tiny cerebrum into a million points of light.

As she dug her fingernails into my chiseled traps and delts, my entire epidermis sizzled with a holy islamophobia. And as she pushed her strap-on deeper into my rectum, I was Spirit-filled with a religiosity so powerful it could unwed an army of adams and steves.

When we were done we held on to each others wet, shivering, naked bodies and inhaled deeply the sweet smoldering smoke of dried and cured intolerance.

So I guess, what I'm saying is, I know something about the true power of the Sexual Personae of Palin, that maybe y'all don't.

  148. I have puzzled about Ms. Palin more in terms of the face she chooses to present to the world as opposed to the real thing. Take, for example, her studied effort to present herself as a God-fearing person and as a good Christian. Therefore, it is not unfair to judge her by the standard she has set for herself and her politics, especially as she has shown a penchant for judging others by it. Thus, she says, rather arrogantly, that she would pray for those who are criticizing her. She denounces other people's action as "pure evil," and readily uses her religion to loudly take a stand on her politics. A sage has said, "don't tell me anything about who you are; I see"! And what do we see in Palin. Are those who see her as a phony justified? Let's see. It would seem that Jesus preached all the opposites of what Palin has come to represent. Christ represents--love, not hate and division (surely not "us versus them"), oneness and brotherhood, not separation, truthfulness, not untruth, forgiveness, not vindictiveness and payback politics, sincerity, not manipulation, humility (recognizing one's flaws), not constantly seeing others as the problem (remember Jesus emphasizing that we acknowledge our own flaws--remove first the plank in your own eyes, he said), inordinate desire for attention as opposed simple living and selfless service, simplicity and moderation instead of showmanship, working with the poor instead of loving a life of celebrity, and more. Palin calls others "shallow;" but what substance has she shown so far in her words and politics? Is it not the reason reasonable people were alarmed about her being McCain's pick as a running mate in the Presidential campaign of 2008 and why the electorate rejected Sen. McCain in the end? Over all, I feel that if Christ w

  163. What a hoot! A poll comparing Obama to Palin?

She hasn't had a chance to do anything but complain and play the prom queen victim act. And no one, I repeat, NO ONE here that's standing up for her has shone a light upon her policy opinions. That's because there aren't any.

She just wants to tell us about her son Trig, what a great American she is. How she likes to shoot things. How people 'just don't get it'. And what about the 'real Americans' comment?

People who like her just avoid these tender subjects. They change the topic to 'why are you attacking her?'. I'm anxious to actually read her book and hear about her opinions on foreign policy.

Right up front I'll tell you that I think Max Blumenthal's opinion piece about her is right on. She thinks that she is a victim and she plays on the sympathies of those who also feel victimized.

I've got my issues with Obama's performance at present, but to try to make a comparison is just silly. I won't say stupid, because that would almost infer that we're talking to adults here.

After quitting as Governor - as in 'quitting her job' - she seems much more qualified to lead a girl scout group. I'm serious. She's a mother figure. I can see where that might appeal to some folks.

Try this: In your minds eye, put her in the same room as Putin; or maybe the leader of Pakistan. Or Hamid Karzai. All the important world arenas. How is she going to do? What's she going to say? How are they going to treat her? Look folks... Mom is not going to help you out here. She's gonna go make some moose chili.

Yup, I was wrong about Hillary for President but then again she stopped campaign planning after Super Tuesday and as a result lost by "not winning even tho she won every primary in the end". The delegate fiasco for counting purpopses cost her the spot.

Any rate..as I have always mentioned, the only poll that matters is election day.

I dont think Romney is disqualified by his religion, but I think it will be an issue for all the libs who fear religion and its values more than anything plus there are fundementalists who will not vote for him based on THEIR beliefs. Either way, as usual, any Repub, much less a conservative, has an uphill battle fighting the dem candidates, the press, the unions slush funds, and now ACORN(another jewel in the corriupt political arsenal of the left)..and stacked coverage in general.

I think Rommney will have a Mormon issue like Kennedy had a catholic issue...it took Old Joe to buy the election with union help in West Virgina ...Romney , for me seems fine, but I think the press, which is now solidly a wing of the Dem party, will hammer the shit out of the Mormon thing mercilesly, all th while pointing out how the right doesn't like him for that, whether true or not..he will be papered by the press.

    1. Status quo on military intervention.

    2. Unqualified support of Israel.

    3. Sound government fiscal policy.

    4. Lower taxes.

    5. Foreign policy and economic policies are driven by a social conservative agenda that wants government intervention in the home but not in the board room.

  194. Palin will never run for President and if she does she will not get the nomination.

What she will do, and this is the real point of fear for the left, is she will raise billions for the GOP and will have a huge influence on who the GOP picks and she will be used to campaign in the districts of Dem congressmen who voted for this piece of shit that Pelosi and Reid have just coughed up, as well as the uber spending socialist crap destroying the national wealth engine and currency. She will be heard loud and clear about a return to the Constitution which was designed to protect men FROM govt intrusion, NOT to have 1/2 the population working for govt and sending the bill to the few left paying for the whole mess.

Yes, the left should be afraid, for if Obama and cabal in Congress continues down this drunken spending spree with debts into the next 200 years as America sinks to world parity of medocrity because of the history of liberal govt here.. then the fear of Palin will be realised.

She may well have power more potent than the Presidency..she may have the power to remove him and all the others in the left run Congress...and do it without the corrupted criminal ACORN or the multitude of front groups all funded with stimulus money to be used to buy votes for the next election.

She just might be able to do it with massive fund raising from ordinary people....community organising of a sorts, except this time those going to the polls in droves will be very angry tax payers ready for revolution.

Yes, the left should be afraid. They are in trouble...and next year is election year and Palin is running for ..no office.

Wow. What a diatribe! The left is not afraid of Palin. Name one blogger on this blog who has shown fear of Palin. The only one I can think of is darladoon, and even she said she's afraid of the people Palin controls, not Palin herself. (and she's right to fear Palin's followers...they are the same people who got caught up in Hitler's "Deutschland Uber Alles" campaign. By the way, that roughly translates into "germany first" which is EXACTLY what Sarah's followers say (About America) without even knowing what they are talking about!

I hope Palin takes over the Republican party. I hope she and her followers manage to eliminate every single moderate Republican from the party. I hope she alienates independents. I know she hates liberals.

She has no qualities to run for office (or even be in office, which is why she quit) and if she becomes the "kingmaker" for Conservatives, so much the better.

  198. Sarah Palin appears well on her way to becoming a million-selling author.

"Going Rogue" sold 700,000 copies _ a number that includes pre-orders _ in its first week of release, according to a publishing official close to the former Alaska governor. The official was not authorized to release the sales figure and asked not to be identified.

Palin's memoir came out Nov. 17 with a first printing of 1.5 million copies. On Friday, publisher HarperCollins announced that the printing would be increased to 2.5 million.

Few nonfiction books have debuted so well. In 2004, Bill Clinton's "My Life" sold more than 900,000 copies in its first week.

Sarah is doing well for someone not holding political office and never having been President. The "cream" is hearing the leftist squeal like a pig being butchered!

  208. I have puzzled about Ms. Palin more in terms of the face she chooses to present to the world. Take, for example, her studied effort to present herself as a God-fearing person and as a good Christian. She judges others by her standard. Thus, she says, rather arrogantly, that she would pray for those who are criticizing her. She denounces other people's action as pure "evil." It would seem that Jesus preached all the opposites of what Palin has come to represent. Palin calls others "shallow;" but people rejected her as McCain's running mate for this reason. If Christ would come back to earth today, Palin may not even recognize him. She would call Christ a "socialist" for trying to help the poor. As Shakespeare states through one of his more memorable characters, "the cull does not make the monk." Dr. Sam

This is how mistakes are made and we all know how eager the lefties are to parse her speech and find the slightest that they can magnify, even as they ignore all of Obama's. If you listen to Barack Obama, he's very diliberate in his speech , although he says 'uh' way too much. Sarah has a lot to say but her manner of speech needs refinement to put her on a higher level as a communicator.

She has plenty of time to bone up on policy details and to hire a speaking coach to slow her down. If she does wish to persue higher office, she'll need to do both. At least she has a war chest now.

Thrawn, I agree. There is something to be said for Sarah Palin's celebrity, but I guess living in Hollywood and seeing celebreties fairly often throughout my life, I have grown pretty immune to the lure of meeting a celebrity.

But that's all that Sarah Palin has: celebrity. I hope that our political leaders, both on the left and on the right, would have more brains than she does; she is truly a former beauty queen who has managed to parlay that kind of celebrity to a national celebrity. She's nothing more than Carrie Prejean; and with the same moral compass: do it for the money. If Palin really cared about governing, she would not have quit her job as Alaska's governor, regardless of how hard it got for her; she should have slogged through it, as all politicians sometimes have to do. But no, she WANTS the celebrity (and the accompanying money that goes with it), more than she wants to govern and show her governing credentials.

Celebrity is shallow, and the fact she has pursued it so blatantly, tells me everything I needed to know about her seriousness as a politician; she HAS no seriousness about being a politician.

So you've lived in Hollywood most of your life huh? Well, that explains it.

As for the Prejean, Palin comparison, that's simply ludicrous. Sarah Palin rose to the highest office in Alaska, the nation's largest state and was quite successful in that office until a campaign was mounted against her with all of those silly ethics suits to drive her from office. Her Lt' Governor was more than capable of carrying on her policies and to gain re-election himself.

Her decision to leave that office was clearly explained, right from the horses mouth. You just choose to believe it was because of other reasons than she stated, as do others who will cintinue the onslaught against her. Look, when the liberals captured the House and the Senate, Sarah saw this as an emergency, as did the rest of the right.

She cannot make the same impact from way up there as she can by traveling the lower 48 and metting people up close and personal to deliver her message face to face. People love her. Get over it.

Oh and BTW, do you have any teen age girls in your family? Any of them ever been knocked by ARod? Get the point?

Actually no, I haven't lived in Hollywood most of my life, but I have lived here for a while.

I agree that people love her. I am simply not one of them because I believe, as based on her actions, not her words, that she craves celebrity more than she craves to "help the real America."

As for her to-do with David Letterman, I agree that Letterman (who I love) was completely in the wrong. However, I also believe that his apology was heartfelt and that the joke itself was directed towards Bristol, that paragon of Republican Teenage Abstinence Only policy, and not the younger daughter.

But answer me this: if Palin wanted her family kept "out of bounds," why did she hold up her family as virtuous throughout the entire campaign? She never once (until AFTER she brought them onto the nations stage) said to the media, "Keep my children out of this" as Obama did right from the beginning. So, who protected their children better from the limelight, Obama or Palin?

  229. steven carver "loves letterman"! That's typical. Letterman shares some of the great traits of other men carver "loves", like Clinton, Edwards, Gavin Newsome etc. These wonderfully admirable traits, shared and celebrated by liberals everywhere include: Sociopathic-narcissism and the ability to BETRAY those closest to them....Thier WIVES and FAMILIES! This betrayal is almost mandatory for any Dem./Lib to reach the heights of popularity amongst thier loser-liberal followers, and should be a good lesson for all children on the importance of betraying those closest to you in order to further your own selfish agenda! By the way, I hope they throw the book at Mark Sanford, he's scum!!! Those who love despicable, selfish, evil people like David Letterman are the problem with this country and I have no respect and plenty of disdain for these bonafide losers!

I sided with Letterman on this one. The joke about Bristol was fair game. When it turned out Sarah had her younger daughter in NY, and there was some potential ambiguity as to how the joke should be interpreted, Letterman did the right thing by offering a heartfelt apology.

I think Palin was wrong to insinuate that the apology was insincere. I think she was wrong to encouraging her fans to believe believe the worst about Letterman. In fact, I think it was spiteful. I understand that she was angry at people taking shots at her daughter, but she knew that was going to happen when she accepted the Rep VP slot knowing Bristol was pregnant.

Q: Is there a way that Palin could "redeem" herself?

The NTs embodiment of redemption is the Apostle Paul, who went from persecuting Christians, to conversion, to theological stardom, and finally martyrdom.

Maybe Palin could follow a modernized reversal of Paul's journey, with a bit of Hollywood flair. She could renounce Christianity, make a sex tape, and travel the country like Javier Bardem in No Country For Old Men, offing little Down Syndrome bitches with an air compressor-powered cattle gun. That would be sexy!

Your own morals, as exhibited throughout this blog, are all over the map, and not consistent in the least. I believe in freedom for all; you don't. I believe in peace between nations; you want a holy war with Islam.

You don't support freedom for Iraqi's, Iranians, Afghans, Pakistanis, and other countries where the US might intervene against totalitarian govts.

This doesn't really deserve a response but seing that you are so far off the mark and an obvious victim of bandwagoning that I'll take a shot.

First of all, as far back as I can remember, all Presidential candidates appeared several times during campaigns with their families. Sarah is very proud of her family and rightfully so.

You're remarks about Letterman are laughable. He has certainly proved himself to be a model of virtue, hasn't he. His apology was anything but sincere as he was back at Sarah just a couple of weeks later. Please recite for me one joke he's done about Obama.

What difference does it make which daughter he made the joke about, even though he shoul have known that it was Sarah's younger daughter who attended the Yankee game that day. I guess we can be happy that he hasn't taken any shots at Piper yet.

Your cheap shot a Bristol reveals your real motive here. You are one of these people who hates Sarah Palin because she's pro life. Thank God her daughter learned from her mother's values and did not consider killing that beautiful baby.

Also, I've seen plenty of shots and videos of Obama's family. Who's hiding?

That's an awful way to refer to Sarah's baby. If she didn't carry her baby around, the stupid left would be asking, "What's she trying to hide her poor handicapped child now." But that's not the reason why Sarah is usually seen with her baby. She is a proud, loving mother who gives thanks to God for choosing Todd and She to be that child parents.

    Posted by gunslinger1 at 11/24/2009 @ 3:30pm

  249. gangpapist-I was just pointing out that it wasn't necessary for Palin to renounce Christianity prior to doing those things, like make a sex tape.

    Posted by i'm nobody at 11/24/2009 @ 3:32pm

  250. Posted by i'm nobody at 11/24/2009 @ 3:32pm |

Dude, I'm not talking about her just making a sex tape or doing naughty stuff. I'm talking a road to redemption here.

Her crime seems to be that she 1)embraces pretty standard middle-american moral values 2) she's a big-time breeder 3) she spit in the face of every sanctimonious lefty who ever looked at that positive EPT and decided to let the good times roll, by giving birth to a fu**in retard.

So while yes, Christians could make sex tapes, Palin's road to redemption would probably involve a renunciation.

Our Lady of Renunciation. She could be sainted.

I noticed none of these men are listed as the "people steven carver (and please at least have the courtesy to spell my name right) loves." And yet their moral departures from the straight and narrow are just as bad (if not worse) than Clinton's, Letterman's, or Gavin Newsome's. Slinger - a couple of things...

    1. I don't hate Sarah Palin because she is pro life. I hate her because she's a stupid former beauty queen who managed to get elected to the top job in a state that has less people in it than the city I live in...and when that got too hard for her, she QUIT! That's why I hate her.

As for being pro life, I am both pro life and pro choice and people like you, who only see in black and white, can't grasp your tiny little minds around that concept.

As for Letterman jokes about Obama; I found these on the Intertubes:

"Well, we're just a couple of weeks from new President Barack Obama being sworn in. And he's been very busy naming a lot of cabinet positions. And today he announced that he wants the surgeon general to be TV Dr. Sanjay Gupta. That was the kid on 'American Idol,' wasn't it?"

"But surgeon general, that's a tough position, and it was hard for Obama to make the choice. It was between Gupta, Dr. Phil and a guy on 'Scrubs.'"

And while you may have seen "shots" of Obama's girls during the election, he certainly did NOT parade them all over the television the instant he was nominated for office, did he? In fact, when the press started getting too close, he again (time and time again) told the media to stay away from his family. Sarah never did any such thing, because she wanted the "real america" to see her fabulous, if imperfect, family and vote for her because of it.

There is not a single Muslim, homosexual or anyone else I want to see dead or in hell.

Marriage is not a civil right or any other kind of right. Just like a drivers license is not a right.

Republicans support mandatory health insurance? Name one. Name any conservative who supports mandatory health insurance.

You bring out your repeated lie (and that of other leftists) that the Iraq was was a lie. You've been proven wrong but will never admit it. And again, you sidestepped. You don't favor freedom for all the people in the countries I listed.

Show me where Adams and Madison believed in an income tax?

  261. "There is not a single Muslim, homosexual or anyone else I want to see dead or in hell.

Marriage is not a civil right or any other kind of right. Just like a drivers license is not a right. "

Undoubtedly Antisocialist thinks he is better than Muslims, homosexuals, and anyone else... except him and some other members of his stupid sect. And I name it sect, because anyone that is as intolerant as he is, defines by his attitude to be sectarian.

Marriage in a civil society as special as it is, is a contract, period. It occurs in several forms since the dawn of humanity. Civil marriage is one thing, religious marriage is a sacrament for people who believe in it, the blessing of a civil marriage by God. Know you won't come up with things like non believers don't have the right to marry...or are you?

We cannot impose our beliefs in an heterogeneous society. Civil society means respect for everyone's beliefs and to guarantee the rights of everyone

It is so funny how the extreme right is a copy of the extremist Muslim societies...everything the same with another deity. As they say, there is a thin line between love and hatred. You could team up to convert the rest of the world, don't you?

These neo cons are so brain damaged they think that society today is comparable with our Founding Fathers's. No, Madison or Adams where brighter than you are. They were seeking the eternal values of liberty and the people's welfare. In today's society of course they would had sought those in another way. Certainly what they weren't is egotistical and self-righteous as the religious right.

"Freedom, equality, fraternity..", it is still a task to fulfill,

  266. emile-Like these others who proclaim themselves to be brilliant that isn't reflected in your posts.Your responses are juvenile, pointless, and nothing more than a run of the mill put down.Telling someone to get a life is just the usual old tired put down.Tax that brain you claim to have and come up with a good put down so I can be entertained. It would, also,be good if you expanded on your put down and say what the person got wrong rather than just responding with a put down that a 10 year old could come up with.

  267. emile-If you guys were half as brilliant as you believe yourselves to be then you would realize that I prefer that you guys put me down.My view is that you guys are crazier than I ever thought of being, as I have stated. That would mean that I want you guys to look down on me and put me down.I'd have to go back to heavy drinking and drug abuse if you didn't.Either that or commit suicide.

  268. the put down was that you don't know anything about people. grow up.

  269. emile-Your response was pointless and juvenile.Another run of the mill put down.Like these others who proclaim themselves to be brilliant you appear to have lived a sheltered life. It's obvious that you guys know little about people who are different from yourselves. You frequently make incorrect statements about what others believe in who are different from you.At least, you admitted that you can't tax your brain and come up with something good and can just do run of the mill put downs that are meaningless. You,also, showed ignorance by putting me down again since I just told you that I prefer that you put me down.

    Posted by i'm nobody at 11/25/2009 @ 12:41pm

  270. emile-You self proclaimed brilliant people who believe that you're superior to others have delusional views of yourselves so what makes you think that you have realistic views when it comes to other people?

    Posted by i'm nobody at 11/25/2009 @ 1:07pm

  271. Jesus said many things that are being igonred by the religious conservatives, mainly: "Love your Enemies" I dont' think starting War in Afganastan can be considered Love. Also, "Turn the other Cheek", also not anything like war. How about, "Blessed are the peacemakers" I could go on forever....

Ssshhh....maybe, if we're all quiet, and no one points a camera at her, she'll leave the continental US.

We eagerly await Cheney/Palin 2012 (mutual suicide pact or GOP healing cleanse: you make the call).

No! We're just getting warmed up! I haven't heard her recipe for moose chili. Putin hasn't reared his head! Or has he?

The poor thing was unfairly maligned about the Russia thing. She never said that she could see it from her house, and, to be factual, you CAN see it from Little Diomede island since big Diomede island belongs to Russia.

But let's put that aside, for there are many other things to be made fun of... like the Newsweek cover that makes her look like a cheerleader for the Dallas cowboys. Oh, those darn 'gotcha' journalists! 269!

  275. wolfgang-I make the assumption that any male who says that there is a difference between womens looks based upon race, religion,or political ideology are homosexuals. All straight men learn at about the age of 12 or 13 that women are beautiful and sexy regardless of race, religion,or political ideology.Only a gay man would be so discriminating since they don't have the same reaction to women as straight men do.

I just have 2 questions to this comment.First do others consider you attractive "I'm Nobody" and if the answer is yes are you still available

You also forget about her beliefs in banning books and the fact that neither she nor her daughter can practise her method of pre-martial sex! "Just say no" isn't that basically her philosphy. To bad she didn't practise it herself. Oh well do as I say not as I do!!

Yes, she'll strong-arm a librarian over books about gays, but she's here to protect you from fascism!

At least if she wins, we'll only have her as president for two years or so before she packs it in with a, "This decision was about America, not me", resignation speech from the rose garden.

    Posted by snowball777 at 11/26/2009 @ 06:22am

  277. drpiggy-I'm glad that you knew to not take that post seriously.I don't know if I'm considered to be attractive or not.I look like cousin Itt on the Addams family.I'm married.

Given that the 'regular' heat on any sitting president is very intense, I completely concur. But she could just squash dissent! A hostile takeover of all the remaining 'liberal' news outlets. No more pesky stories about contentious environmental debates. chermak would be her go-fer. Wag the dog, SJ!

We'll have to watch carefully just in case Todd and the rest of the family decide to steal the duvets from the living quarters. There's a hell of a lot of silverware that could go missing as well.

  282. Beck-Wooten '12

Not one complaint has ever been made about Mike Wooten's professional performance from any member of the public other than the Palin/Heath family and their closest friends.
