The Notion

Unequal Power, Unequal Access

posted by Laura Flanders on 11/11/2009 @ 09:34am

"If women are denied a chance to develop their full human potential, including their potential to lead healthier and at least somewhat happier lives, is society as a whole really healthy? "

It's not my question -- it's the question raised by Dr. Margaret Chan, Director General of the World Health Organization which just finished up it first -- first? -- study of women's health.

Their verdict? Societies are still failing women. While women provide the bulk of health care, they rarely receive the care they need. Sound familiar?

Worldwide, WHO reports women do the caring -- at home, at hospital, at clinics -- yet those very same institutions fail them.

Take HIV/AIDS. Up to 80% of all health care and 90% of care for HIV/AIDS-related illness is provided in the home - almost always by women. Yet women remain uncared for, poorly protected and as a result, HIV is now the leading cause of death and disease among women between the ages of 15 and 44. Survive to older age, and the two leading killers of women are heart disease and strokes. Why? Because women show what one friend of mine was told were "atypical" symptoms. And as long as the male minority on the planet is considered the typical patient -- women will keep dying because of that fact.

Sound strident? No it's just common sense -- the WHO tries to win governments over by offering economic incentives to act: because women tend to live longer than men, better deal with their health problems now or pay more later.

But really. "We will not see significant progress as long as women are regarded as second-class citizens in so many parts of the world," Dr Chan said. Unequal power relations, she continued, "translate into unequal access to health care and unequal control over health resources." "What does this say about the state of social progress in the 21st century?" asks Dr. Chan. One can only wish she'd ask Rep. Stupak and the House Democrats.

    Ms. Flanders:

I can't tell you how much you lose when you start a writing with all manner of profound facts, such as HIV/AIDS being the leading worldwide killer of women 15-44, and then immediately begin poisoning, dividing, and separating us with a sneering reference to "the male minority on this planet".

Why don't you just begin addressing men as "you people"? You'll certainly more directly achieve your goal of alienating men who would otherwise be deeply impacted by what you say, along with any woman paying attention to you who happens to have a positive take on men herself.

Governments around the world are silent spectators of this robbery. The multinational drug companies are not allowing third World countries, to manufacture these medicines citing property rights. 10. we can most effectively take care of our own house.

we have been letting our own house fall into dangerous disrepair for years now.

lets fix it up first, then we can get about the business of realistically trying to save the rest of the world, or at least nudging it gently in the right direction.

single payer health care for all citizens - like the rest of the civilized world. free business from that extraneous burden...free all from a parasitic kraken that systematically drains resources as surely as any third world corruption.

help make american business competitive and efficient by instituting single payer health coverage. create a healthy work force, a business community capable of concentrating 100% on its business and not distracting social issues better handled by non profit public sector.

government CAN be business's best friend WITHOUT effing the schmuk - by taking from business onerous and distracting crap and thereby allowing business to do what it does - produce valued goods and services to be consumed sustainably by healthy employees who have enough REAL expendable income to afford such...

and while we're at it, how 'bout a little good gubbamint involvement in assuring portability of pension funds too...

as a progressive conservative i want a happy, secure, healthy society where consumers feel secure enough to responsibly consume my products and services, where stability reigns without ossification, where smart change is responsibly implemented - as opposed to dog eat dog style vicious anarchy and fear induced viciousness.

we are very wealthy and fortunate. huge gobs of wealth is ready to invest to retool our great nation. this time lets invest it wisely and build a house of stone upon a firm foundation.

Darla, To these religious fanatics, the children are not of any concern in either case. Control is their main concern. In this case, it's control over a women and her partner's decision about a personal matter. These anti-abortion fruit baskets are also harming men as well as women by their moronic stance on birth control and abortion.

I saw a piece a month or so ago where one of these so called Christian family values adoption agencies treated the mothers to be like a piece of meat that was to deliver a baby so they could take their cut in the selling of said baby here in the good ole USA. There are people making money off the misery of teens, young parents who can't afford to have children and so on.

Most of these so called Christians have no intention of adopting these kids themselves, but boy are they big on forcing others to have children. They're all a bunch of hypocrites that don't have to deal with outcome of their foolish, selfish, stupid and religiously biased positions. But boy, they sure feel grand believing that they have some type of moral superiority or high ground with their feeble pea brain reasoning on the subject.

What is occurring tragically, is that male homosexuals of all races are infecting women causing especially black women to have high infection rates. And the data shows that this is occurring mainly among young people which speaks to the change in sexual morality in this nation.

People should make their own decision on whether they need to purchase health insurance, what level of coverage if any to purchase, and have states provide a safety net of coverage to the uninsurable.

  18. In the Mayan theocracy of Central America between the 11th and 16th centuries. To appease a feathered-serpent god, maidens were drowned in sacred wells and other victims either had their hearts cut out, were shot with arrows, or were beheaded.

In Peru, pre-Inca tribes killed children in temples called "houses of the moon."

In Tibet, Bon shamans performed ritual killings. In Borneo builders of pile houses drove the first pile through the body of a maiden to pacify the earth goddess.

In India, Dravidian people offered lives to village goddesses, and followers of Kali sacrificed a male child every Friday evening.

In the Third Crusade, after Richard the Lion-Hearted captured Acre in 1191, he ordered 3,000 captives - many of them women and children - taken outside the city and slaughtered. Some were disemboweled in a search for swallowed gems. Bishops intoned blessings. Infidel lives were of no consequence. As Saint Bernard of Clairvaux declared in launching the Second Crusade: "The Christian glories in the death of a pagan, because thereby Christ himself is glorified."

If it weren't for these sacrifices, devilish women would be torturing heroic men en mass today.

Actually, you couldn't be more wrong..as usual....we religous types teach our children to wait for sex and we teach them the dangers of sexual diseases...

and we teach our male children to keep their dicks out of other males asses, as that is not what they were design for...our young girls, not women, but girls, that condoms in the mouth are for whores and married or comitted people...not children, and any "rubber" items in their mouth should be balloons.

We teach our children that drug users and gay men have spread HIV/Aids around the world, that in many other cultures one can seem to break the social mores that spread aids amoung the women, from there into the family, and we teach our children that some behaviors are indeed ...wrong....and to use their own judgement based on our teachings, not the union school rep, and THINK before acting...

we just do not want our children getting their values and moral back bone from the school system, since they fail miserably at education and can't teach math or reading at grade level, therefore, last place they should put their failure history of edjacation... is..sex.

Let's see, I wonder where Liver sits on the abortion issue.

I have a different observation to make. I have yet to meet a non-religious person yet who was against the practice of abortions. The only people who are dead set against the practice are Christians. Good God Liv. Sometimes your lack of common knowledge on subjects is mind boggling. And, your backpedaling on the left getting the idea that most Christians are against abortion shows just how far you'll go in an attempt to make the left seem to be out of contact with reality, but the opposite is true. You are the one who's grasp of reality is at question on this topic.

You see, if you take religion out of the equation and remove the the belief that life begins at conception, the antiabortion crowd's argument falls to pieces. Is it considered murder to have your tonsils removed, and arm amputated, having a kidney removed etc? No and neither are abortions. Abortions and birth control remove potential lives, not existing ones. If you wish to make birth control illegal, then go all of the way and make masturbation illegal as well.....whoops, you guys would probably be all for that.....of course you would continue to do it in your closets at home, but that's only for you to know and no one else, right?! johnny's irresponsibility ends up costing everyone and to some extent must be factored into the equation.

this is one of the most ignorant, hate-filled and moronic screeds i have ever read on the internet.

putting a condom on a penis, with one's mouth, is not disgusting, immoral, gross, lascivious, or anything of the sort.

it is a practical, useful and necessary tool for young men and women, so that they understand HOW IMPORTANT BIRTH CONTROL is in:

    a) reducing pregnancy (and abortions)

    b) stopping the spread of disease

    these are FACTS.

why are you people so afraid of sex education??

Don't you see the flaw in your argument dude?

Conception is when the sperm fertilizes the egg. That is an action with a clear, scientific result. It is not a tonsil or a liver. It is a potential life because it is a life. That is not based on religion, it is science. You know science, right, it the thing you don't really understand, but use everyday to justify the destruction of western economies to save the planet. Remember? (haha, just kiddin' around with you.)

The potentiality does not exist merely because the sperm and egg exist, so your masterbation sidetrack is moot (and stupid). Sperm + nothing = life? Naw! Not even you can buy that, can you?

The whole abortion movement isn't really about "womens' rights" at all, any more than preemptive invasion of Iraq was about spreading democracy, was it?. It is about institutionalized population control, particularly population control of minorities and the poor.

But it is legal in this country because the courts said so. But that's not enough. You insist that we all fund this murder. Sorry, no sale.

Hey Darla, I just don't agree that your attitude towards sex is healthy for young women at all. You are at the mercy of liberal men who are deathly afraid of committment of any kind. And can't really conceive of what respect for a woman entails. But they sure like the benefits of that banana demo and the freedom and power abortion gives them over women.

Bottom line, do any of your 'lovers' even care about you enough to commit themselves? Probably not. They are all narcissists, just like YOU.

Start with Margaret Sanger, Darla, honey, and then go on believeing that you are not a useful idiot, and that abortion is about your "rights".

When University of Chicago researchers set out to discover which religious denominations have the best sex, they learned that the faithful don't do all their shouting in church. Conservative Protestant women, their 1994 survey found, report by far the most orgasms: Thirty-two percent say they achieve orgasm every time they make love. Mainline Protestants and Catholics lagged five points behind. Those with no religious affiliation were at 22 percent. (Unitarians may not wish to read any further.)

From a NY Times Review of Tom Perotta's book "The Abstinence Teacher"

<Raised Roman Catholic (he has since lapsed), he was exposed to the self-abnegating form of religion that the evangelicals, he said, had turned on its head, particularly in regard to sex. "Catholic theology is that sex should be for procreation," he said. "But this evangelical culture really embraces orgasms and pleasure. I was really interested in that strain of Christianity that didn't want to fight American culture and that's a vibrant, prosperous and actually kind of sexy culture.">

well thanks for the data, antisocialist, but you do realize that the vast majority of women lie (or severely distort the truth) about their ability to reach orgasm.

no woman, or man for that matter, would want to be seen as someone who either cannot reach orgasm, or cannot have sustained, quality orgasms; and therefore will lie, or distort the truth, to make it appear as if they do have a full and satisfying sex life.

many women don't reach orgasm in their lifetimes. and that is because men either don't know what they're doing OR don't last long enough. or, obviously, the woman doesn't know what she's doing either, or doesn't know how to relax/breathe long enough.

tantric sex is probably the best way for a woman to do this, and i'm wondering how many christian women are into that.

And we have no illusions about being human. We, as parents, hope we have armed our children with enough information to make their own moral and intelligent choice. I would not want them to exist in life as a Darla,..... so completly lost on all fronts.

Only an idiot like Darla would equate a desire to have the family be responsible for sex ed rather than the scghool, with being anti sex ed...

My point remains I do not want anyone who has proven themselves so inefficient and ineffective as the public school system to teach my children or yours, about sex, a very important function in life....when they fuck up their only function so completely that our children "graduate" without knowing how to make change if the McDonalds power goes out and then can't read the instructions on the condom pamphlet...

  79. so many of the older generation in this country are living in this extremely puritanical mindset, which seeks to repress desire, which seeks to repress sexuality, which seeks to repress what we all know and do with our bodies. they are basically afraid of their bodies.

in japan, for instance, families often go to the spa together. and they clean each other very meticulously. and all in the buff (at least in some parts of japan!). and this is great for children. to show them not to be afraid of their NAKED bodies.

sex education serves an extremely important function: it prevents unwanted pregnancy and disease. it gets people talking about the body, about sex, about health.

  94. What kills me is that these idiots can't see the biggest money drain on our economy is our defense budget and the wars we have to continually be in to justify paying the obscene amounts of national treasure used to fund the war machine's ventures. the budget for Iraq and Afghanistan represent less than 1/10 of 1% of the US budget. It has not impact on domestic spending. It is the leftist deficit spending by the Democrats that quadrupled the deficit in less than one year.

And as I asked another blogger who made a similar attack, what is Congress doing with the 35 billion per year that goes into the Highway Trust Fund from fuel taxes?
