Joe Tells Rush Who Wears the Rants in This Party

posted by Leslie Savan on 10/09/2009 @ 6:22pm

The good folks on the set of Morning Joe spent Friday morning dodging prairie oysters flung by the host at rival Rush Limbaugh, who had called Joe Scarborough a "neutered, chickified moderate." Rush had simply been trying to geld another Republican who dared criticize him, but this time Scarborough gelded back and it was not a pretty sight.

It all started earlier this week, when Scarborough ripped Rush for going "off the deep end" by jiggling with glee over Obama's failure to win the 2016 Olympics for Chicago.

No forgiver of lese-majeste, Limbaugh hit back Thursday at Joe and "PMSNBC":

"I would be careful," Joe replied this morning, "if I had put my testicles in a blind trust for George W. Bush for eight years." He liked the image so much he painted it again, and again: "There are a lot of people on the right that in fact did put their testicles in a blind trust for the past eight years and stopped being conservative and started being apologists."

Eeew! on Joe's suitcase metaphor. But more eeew on Time.com's Mark Halperin and his rictal smile as it dawns on him that he's one of the apologists who Joe just sliced and diced.

More substantively, though, anybody who's been paying attention has to know that much of Scarborough's argument is laughable: Does anyone remember his principled opposition to the invasion of Iraq? Nope, because until relatively recently he was all for boots on the ground pretty much everywhere there's terra firma. And how can this former congressman-soldier in Newt Gingrich's Contract-with-America revolution (which shut down the government when President Clinton wouldn't slash Medicare funds) really claim that he represents a different kind of conservatism?

But kudos to Joe for trying to correct the prevailing, erroneous sexual math in which conservative=manly and liberal or moderate=emasculated. While this nutsy equation has been operating nationally for ages, a personal cockfight between Rush and Joe has been in the psychological works for a bit, too. As I wrote about Morning Joe's shimmying, unpredictable political tilt back in February:

You can imagine Rush and Sean taunting Joe behind the trackhouse over at WABC [Radio]: "You're not a real man, you're on MSNBC! You work with liberal girls and lesbos. Joe likes girls, Joe likes girls..." And Scarborough, who has the insecure performer's instinct for where the sympathies of 51 percent of any crowd lie, is very susceptible to hazing. (He's written, as the New York Observer points out, that he quit his frat at the University of Alabama because he didn't want to dodge Scotch bottles tossed from third-floor windows and have upperclassmen yell at him, "Hey, queerball, pick dat up!")

Joe stood up to the hazing this time, and it doesn't look like he'll blink at some later date. That's in part because the Palm Beach Penguin left him no choice--how else can a true, white male conservative react to being called "chickified"?--and also because some political taboos are loosening, with both David Brooks and South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham already openly defying Rushbo.

But what's really changed is the country, which, most polls show, is no longer buying this Master of the Universe trash talk from anyone. It's pointedly funny that this kind of tea-bag-swinging is taking place just as the GOP has been getting its panties into a twist over women: Sen. John Kyl of Arizona snarling, "I don't need maternity care" in an insurance policy, Virginia gubernatorial candidate Robert McDonnell's graduate school thesis describing working women as "detrimental" to the family, and the National Republicann Congressional Committee saying, of House speaker Nancy Pelosi, that Gen. Stanley McChrystal "should put her in her place." If the real purpose of a political party is to win elections, don't you think it would go out of its way not to offend the more numerous gender?

Well, nuts to that, says Rush. Joe, however, seems to be getting it.

  1. Leslie, the next thing you know the health insurers will deny health care to women across the board because they are a 'pre-existing condition'!

I'm anxious to hear any conservative rebuttal on this topic. On one of Chris Nichols last posts about the Michele Bachmann phenomenon they switched the topic from Michele to Reagan faster than you could say 'Star Wars'. Hardly anyone (conservative) had anything to say about the errant congresswoman.

It's much like the pit bull problem... is it the dogs or is it their environment? And who knows how it got loose and got into my yard? At moments like these the people complicit in looking the other way defer from comment while they try to stifle a laugh.

    Detroit (AP) October 9th, 2009

In a surprise move today, NFL officials announced that the Detroit Lions would be awarded professional football's highest award normally awarded to the winner of the Super Bowl.

"We feel that the Lions are playing with a new verve and their victory would have been all but assured", an NFL spokesman was quote as saying.

Why does equate political positions with masculinity. It's really infintile.

What the hell is rush questioning others masculinity while he is the one with the moobs?

  14. HAR!

Nice to see one of their own call out the quislings and apologists.

Of course, after 8 years of apologetics, bend-over and ignore The Law and twist and shout interpretation of the Constitution...now all of a sudden the cons call Bush a "liberal". When their policies fail miserably they simply do not have the guts or simple ethics to admit that things went terribly wrong under their rules. Nope, the easiest explanation for them is not that Bushs conservative policies failed, but that he MUST be a liberal.

And then TWILLIE, who apparently cannot read so well, shows up and simply is unable to be proud that his Commander in Chief won a Nobel.

    Posted by crabwalk at 10/10/2009 @ 07:03am

  15. The cons are crying, what a shame. Where does this latest conspiracy start. The bad people at the Nobel. They wanted to give an award to Michelle B and Sarah P for prettiest dunce in the ideologue category. Glenny could win in the best crier category and Rush in the biggest racist buffoon category. The fact of the matter is that the Presidency of the United States is too big to fail. Wily coyote tried to fall off the cliff. Luckily the American people showed up in the 2008 election and showed those policies the door. The world is looking for leadership, the conservatives haven't had their variety since "the actor". Let's help the world stage get less dangerous.

As far the Obama Nobel, I'm guessing in this timeline, it was just always meant to go to a currently sitting US president, like 2 years ago... so one could say Obama getting it is somewhat actually a little late!

There are many pieces that explain various liberal views of Obama's Nobel Peace Prize, "twillie." I'll just mention two of my favorites. Richard Kim has a good one on the NATION's website. I'd also strongly recommend Glenn Greenwald's reaction at SLATE.

I think it's worth pointing out, for the record, that just because one is a professor, that does not mean one's default mode of speech is lecturing. Just saying.

Also, on the subject of the thread...Leslie's claim that Scarborough's a hypocrite doesn't change the fact that his substantive point is right: when you blindly follow one leader who proclaims himself to be conservative rather than sticking to your own principles, there's a problem. I think that's more generally applicable, too: don't put the leadership of one person over the principles by which you have promised to govern.

  21. After all rush limbaugh is the very picture of masculinity.

That is if masculinity is defined as being a morbidly obese drug addict.

Think of how many "conservatives" you know that talk like they're the worlds biggest badass because they own a camoflauged hunting jacket and they once got into a fistfight 20 years ago.

The truth? Most conservative tough guy are soft, flabby bitches that would be the first to go if they couldn't get their wonderbread from their local supermarket.

Generally I chalk the tough guy image up to these people compensating for their lack of confidence regarding their sexuality, and/or their tiny peckers.

  22. Obama received thte "Participent" Prize in a not so veiled attempt by a Europe to stop America from escalating in Afganistan. They have no stomach for their own defensive interests and they have no stamina.

That is not to say we should go full bore into Afganistan, but it does show that Europe hasn't had any real influence on the world scene since America saved it from one big German lesson...twice, until now.. now is a good time to push America.. since now Eyrope sees us with a weakened American economy, a govt whose policies will further weaken the economic clout and slow us down even more, and a govt in power that actual cares what Europe, thinks about America,.... instead of what America thinks about America..and half to more than half in America are not happy with what is taking place here...

Conservatives are conserned for what is best for Americans and America...not what Europe thinks America should do for whats best for the world...big difference. The Democratic Party is dead and should be renamed the Socialists Party.

Chinas influence will grow greatly at the expense of Americas self inflicted wounds and Europes influence on us...China does not have a history of benevolent actions on those they defeat, they are pragmatic...I believe Europe(and Russia, the Islamic world) would like to see America weakened economicly, miltarily, and influencialy. The current US govt is right on path to create just that senario.

Like the 'neutralization' of the zionist media's next target, Iran, for example. The writer / producers for both 'shows' probably planned this in advance. They used to call it 'great television.' Now they just call it 'great.'

Same stunt with the Obama Nobel Prize crap. Another divide, distort, distract tactic. Unfortunately, it works. The zionists WILL get their next war, no matter what.

Because the state was spending more than it takes in...

Colorado lost Billions in oil revenues, and a large number of union poil rig jobs, as well as huge tax revenues , which are a large portion of our state earnings, when it imposed enviromental restrictions..the companies moved to Utah, Wyoming and Dakotas...and took the cash, jobs and benefits with them.

Colorado unemployment rate was lower than most, around 7%...it was low until we began to turn from red to purple..we may go back to red next time around.

Also interesting that you don't seem to be complaining about the bills giving money hand over fist to the banks. With you, its always complaining about the little guy.

"We are getting ready for a boom in our business..our overseas business..in China....we sell TO China American products..and as Obama policys of spending and printing are driving us away, killing off the rest of the jobs here and the currency...it makes my product appear cheaper in China...and I make more...more that will never see the US shores..so you can't steal 60-70%..."

Well, why don't you go back to your Ayn Rand books and funny party commentary about "Who is John Galt?" then? Why don't you move yourself and your business to China - and enjoy all that freedom and tax free living you'll experience there? All I can say is don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. America doesn't need you and your fuckin' whining.

  46. Does anyone remember Rush on NFL Prime time? I do ,he said Donovan Mcnabb wasn't smart enough to play quarterback for the Eagles. The guys on the show were stunned, as was ESPN. Rush wasn't back the next week. Rush said recently that school buses should be segregated. Don't worry people have not forgotten about his racial views. He is a disgrace but a lightning rod and example for Glenny. On taxesfor the wealthy, you mean to say a higher tax on people after they make $3 million annually would be a" hardship". How much are we spending on "nation building" annually? How can we spend multi- billions of dollars killing and maiming people but saying no to health care for our citizenry? How and who is going to pay for our "war" borrowing. Our children or is it our grandchildren. Yourjomam since you are proud of the taxes you pay,do you get an interest payment statement with them. That is what you supported and it sounds like you are off-shoring other income. I think you probably do work hard are you the only one who posts here that does. The gay marriage b.s. can go. you're right, twillie, but it sounded pretty bad:

""I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve."

Just finished watching German film about Sophie Scholl, a young anti-Hitler activist executed in 1943. Your statement above pretty much sums it up. Excellent film - can you imagine living your life to the soundtrack of endless radio exhortations by Goebbels? Knowing that the maniacs in charge were totally, murderously insane? In America, it's, like, Divide and Take Their Money. In Nazi Germany it was Divide and Destroy. Phew. end of rant. Try to have a good week, everybody.

I'm a football fan and watch that show . Every man in America would like to be on that show. Rush made an overtly racist comment and got thrown off the show.Ask Tom Jackson from Prime Time what he thought. It was not his show which allows him to say things like"school buses should be segregated". Now I am just pointing out his track record. I do agree here whole heartedly..it is about parents....(communitys where 80% plus out of wedlock "familys" have no parents or understanding that it is more than dropping off in AM and picking up atPM that matters, and that Govt IS NOT a substitute for parents)..and not all about the money, yet you claim the private schools are about money....they get by with a lot less than the public system...and the public system and the unions ARE about money...

I also spent from 6th grade to High School in a very affluent area of the Twin Cities...Hopkins/Edina. My family attends Wayzata schools..

And education was an imperative...my parents, before buying a house, investigated and found out where the best schools were and then bought a house in that district. And our schools did work despite my spelling problems..math and science was my strength, and the teachers played to it...I remember fondly and respectfully a handfull of teachers who made their mark upon me and I am grateful...and union horse shit, strikes, or political indoctrination were NOT the order of the day.

education was the order of the day, the teachers had the pride in their work and it was reflected in the acheivements of their sdtudents...entering the next level with the skills neccessary was...unlike today.

And thats why private school is worth the investment...in some years each of us parents wrote out another check and handed it to the teachers directly.

"Spell check" can also by done by using a rather widely known book published by a guy named Webster, as I noted previously. As for the subject, lately - well, forever - yours has been the coming gloom and doom brought on by "loons" who oppose deep-dish tax breaks to huge enterprises who then use the money saved to pay themselves fat bonuses. And, as always, you complain about your own taxes, though, according to your own pronouncements here, said public grab doesn't seem to be hitting your wallet too hard, that's if you actually possess the wallet of which you speak.

As for the matter at hand, the morning joes and pigboy rushbos can pound away at each other all they like until they form pungent piles of steaming human flesh unable to land on the less fortunate whose own flesh may happen to have the wrong pigmentation...

In short, there are three ways to deal with people being a jackass. One, you ignore them. Two, you reason with them. Three, you engage them as a jackass yourself, preferably in a way that signals you are prepared to take it much farther than they would like.

I've tried one and two. I had thought I'd give the third option a try for awhile. I didn't think it would be more effective, but it certainly has made more of an impression.

Now, I've been moving more to the ignore direction. I have almost reached triple digits on my ignore list, and I come to the site much less. I think I'm going to put my threshold high enough that you will also be included.

I'll give that a try for awhile and see if that makes this site any more enjoyable.

2010 and the inevitable pick-up of some seats in Congress by the GOP will dampen it for a while, but it will come roaring back in the 2012 Primaries.

One faction will win the nomination...and likely lose the election.

If the Hard Right gets their nominee....then the Moderates will claim that 2006, 2008, and 2012 were the fault of "hard liners" and "out-of-touch with the mainstream of America" "Glenn Beck fan" types and pull it back to the Center-Right for 2014 and 2016. And the base will have to "go along to get along" like they did in the pre-Reagan Era.

If the Moderates win the nomination and lose...the Base will scream "See? See? We need a REAL conservative in 2016, no more 'RINOs' and 'McCains'!"...

and the GOP will go the way of the Whigs as they nominate some Neandeerthal who'll promise "First day in office...I'll ban abortion and put 100,000 troops on the Rio Grande!!!"

You should get familiar with the abbreviation DNFTT. If everyone ignored, i.e., "didn't feed", the trolls around here, they'd go away - which would help the discourse immensely.

In operant conditioning terms, this would be called giving "no response", and it is the absolute best way to cut down on undesirable behavior. Unfortunately, there are folks, like yourself, that don't understand this, who feel it it their duty to comment, encouraging them and by doing so make the conversation get murkier - even though they intend the opposite.

Given this fact and an effective system for filtering them out, it makes little difference what I do. So, I do what pleases me. Some days that means ignoring, some days reasoning, and some days I'm a troll myself.

I began judging whether my teachers were liberal or conservative by the 10th grade. It wasn't very difficult in most cases. And where there was some ambiguity, I asked them directly. If they were not forthright, I asked them leading questions to get their position on issues.

Fortunately, I was raised in one of the most conservative counties (at the time in the nation). But there were still some libs in the school teaching system.

  100. Now, I've been moving more to the ignore direction. I have almost reached triple digits on my ignore list, and I come to the site much less. I think I'm going to put my threshold high enough that you will also be included.

I'll give that a try for awhile and see if that makes this site any more enjoyable.

    Posted by srjenkins at 10/11/2009 @ 11:43pm

Sorry to hear that SRJ. I only have 7 people on my ignore and they are either total racists, or post nothing but lengthy conspiracy theories.

  101. and the GOP will go the way of the Whigs as they nominate some Neandeerthal who'll promise "First day in office...I'll ban abortion and put 100,000 troops on the Rio Grande!!!"

Another keeper. Sounds just like the leftists who proclaimed the GOP dead in '65, in '76, and in '96. Wrong each time.

  102. maddow, on the other hand, is pure class.

    Posted by darladoon at 10/12/2009 @ 12:36pm

Maddow is nothing but a snobbish, far left dyke. Perhaps that's why her ratings remain at or near the bottom each month.

  103. "Maddow is nothing but a snobbish, far left dyke. Perhaps that's why her ratings remain at or near the bottom each month"

so, according to antisocialist, the higher your ratings, the more intelligent/persuasive/interesting you are?

according to that logic, then, brittany spears is all three.

    Posted by darladoon at 10/12/2009 @ 2:25pm

  104. John, can you settle on ONE qualifier?

Is it "never listen to" or "sporadically/once or twice a month listen to"?!?!?!?

    Posted by Mask at 10/12/2009 @ 1:55pm

Fair enough...I should clarify..I am not a ditto head who listens each and every day. I listen to Rush once or rwice a month by accident and then never coplpete an hour, but many months never hear him at all. I haven't heard a 3 hour show in 5 years...

You decide...since it seems you already have me pegged as a Rush defender...

I think Rush is a YOUR JOMAMMA defender...

Bizarre conclusion on your part. I mentioned nothing about intellect. And I find Maddow neither interesting or persuasive.

She's simply just another far left radical with a small viewing audience.

    Posted by Mask at 10/12/2009 @ 3:24pm

I USED to see Maddow on MSNBC because for a few years, I was watching MSNBC to monitor what that segment of the left had to say.

But I recently decided it was just too much nonsense and I have discontinued even receiving the station on my satellite dish.

She is however on programs like Meet the Press.

Most of my news viewing these days on television comes from the Chinese network (CCTV), CNN, Free Speech TV, and Link TV.

  110. Here's my first post into the meat-grinder that these comments remind me of:

To be blunt, Beck will overtake both Limbaugh and Hannity in both popularity and ratings points. Not that this surprises me, since you give some folks a man on a horse, and they'll walk right behind it...stepping in horseshit and calling it Chanel No.5 along the way.

I did attend public schools, and did rather well. When you live in the Central San Joaquin Valley, you find that both the schools and their students are much different than your "typical" public school.

A lot of folks blame the teachers for what is wrong in our school systems. True, there are some who never should have been credentialed in the first place.

However, it's the "blame teachers first" mentality that has driven many fine teachers into other professions...much to the detriment of our national education system. And those who squalk the loudest about "inferior teachers" would probably, if challenged, decline to take up the job themselves.

    And so, the cycle continues.

Until we stop treating our schools as a "government-run baby-sitting service,"and start caring about how their little Junior and/or Precious can totally maximise their learning experience during those twelve years? We will be the much worse off for it!

And until we stop glorifying "tax fighting" and look at what damage has been done by "Saint Howie" Javis and his true believers/ Then the axiom of "You get what you pay for" will apply to our kid's education.

If Public Education is so "expensive"? Try public ignorance and apathy...which are much harder to correct.

    Good Day!

  111. Santi you are so full of it makes me wonder. You are like Alex P. Keaton, the conservative way or the highway. I remember teachers in high school in a much different way. Were they interesting ,did they inspire you to read for example. But perhaps you are like my oldest son who always tells me everything is political. Rachel Maddow is a lesbian, that's a fact. Unfortunately for you she is on the other side. She is intelligent, does her research and normally beats up the conservatives she debates. Simply because she is better prepared and looks at 4 or 5 angles of a question or situation. You are a homophobe and refuse to acknowledge that she is a thinker. I am glad you are watchiong Chinese T.V.,you will be able to warn us they are cutting off our credit.

I've been involved in politics since I was 10 years old. How many 10 year olds do you know who start their day with the editorial page of the Newspaper? That was how passionate I was even then.

  113. Twillie and darladoon-Think again about your comments,if you think ESPN threw Rush off the air for the milk toast you stated you two should go sit in the corner. I'm a football fan and watch that show . Every man in America would like to be on that show. Rush made an overtly racist comment and got thrown off the show.Ask Tom Jackson from Prime Time what he thought. . Posted by whatozz at 10/11/2009 @ 11:54am

Oh, OK......... I've thought about it. And ESPN did throw him off the air for that comment. And , Tom Jackson had nothing to say at the time. And, I have no idea what he thought. Why not enlighten us? But, I think Rush "resigned", rather than apologize for slamming the MSM.

So, surely you can quote the "overtly racist remark" he made, right?...

    No, didn't think so.

    Posted by twillie at 10/12/2009 @ 9:35pm

  114. Santi-that makes you atypical, shrug. IO was typical I read the sports. It wasn't political then. Twillie do you know what tone is? To paraphrase it Rush said"the media wants Donovan to be a superstar because he's black. He's not the reason they are winning, they are winning because of the defense not him." It was not the words, it was the way it was said. It was an ESPN experiment with the "hot" radio guy who was used to saying anything he wanted to on his show. It was the smirk and the way he looked at the 2 former All Pros that did it. It is inconsequential to you and that is fine. I suppose his latest comment that student buses should be segregated is o.k. also? That's an old states rights issue ,you have some supporters here.

  115. Posted by whatozz at 10/13/2009 @ 4:52pm

Ihaven't heard his school bus quote. Why don't you put it here IN CONTEXT. There are a whole lot of people who listen to him just to find a quote that can be taken out of context to make him out to be the boogeyman. He even baits them.

so, I think the school bus quote is one of those. Prove me wrong.

As for the "smirk" and the "way it was said"; well, that may be just you who's the hater, huh?

    Posted by twillie at 10/13/2009 @ 7:03pm

  116. Joe might as well face it! Rush has become the face of the current Republican Party mean-spirited, nasty, vicious and corrupt to the core! There is no room in the party for sane people like Joe anymore. If the sane ones stay they prostitute every principle they have to remain Republican. They get shoved out by the bullies like Rush. Rush represents all that most of us has grown to loathe and detest in the Republican party! They are no longer the party I used to vote for back in the 70's. They have been taken over by some vile force there are no words for. When Reagan invited this element into the party he assured it's eventual doom!
