Palin Reverses Press Ban

posted by Ari Melber on 09/07/2008 @ 6:59pm

This shouldn't even be news, but yes, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has announced she will actually take questions from the press during her quest for the White House, per the AP:

Sarah Palin has agreed to sit down with ABC's Charles Gibson later this week for her first television interview since John McCain chose her as his running mate more than a week ago.... The first-term Alaska governor has given speeches alongside McCain since becoming his surprise pick on Aug. 29. But Democrats have already begun to question why Palin has not been put before reporters to answer questions....

"She's not scared to answer questions," [campaign manager Rick] Davis said on "Fox News Sunday."

You know things are bad when the campaign manager has to explain that a candidate isn't scared of questions. The McCain camp appears to have been caught off guard by the backlash to their attempted press ban, including pushback from reporters, bloggers and Palin's Democratic counterpart, Joe Biden. Yet Palin's first instinct to cower from all press interviews, as I wrote earlier, still provides a revealing look into her character:

She talks tough about reporters, but can't face them; she talks up government ethics, but won't answer an investigation under oath; she raves about her own pit-bull image on stage, but betrays a cowardice under actual pressure. In some ways, she is living out the very caricature that she drew of Obama last week -- all talk, no action -- coupled with the smug attitude of her predecessor, the sarcastic swagger and faux-populism of George W. Bush.

shit. they even managed to train that mushmouthed idiot of a "president" enough to gobbldygook his way through a speech.

i'll never stop believing they put some kind of tiny wireless reciever in his ear, starting with the kerry debates, so someone can tell him what to say and model correct pronunciation.

in the abovementioned debates it was uncanny how his pauses right before speaking were just long enough for someone with a brain to cue him as to what to say...

    but who knows?

But the inherent dangers of letting her be interviewed before she can be brought up to speed and ' synchronized ' could prove fatal politically.

I am not so sure it is she who is the most afraid.

More likely Mccain and her handlers.

we shall see. he was expected to get a bump from the convention.

the causality of the bump remains to be seen. some will say its palin, others may claim it to be related to his rejection of bush and the neocons.

I would never have believed it just 10 days ago. But the Republicans are going to win this election.

SP [waits 5 seconds with blank stare]: You know, Al-Qaeda and the Democrats want to take away your right to burn fresh American Gasoline.

CG: Great. And how does your loving all-American family feel about it?

SP [waits 5 seconds with blank stare]: John Mccain's was a POW. Al-Qaeda and the Democrats are working hard to raise your taxes.

CG: Tell us about your experience. Obviously being governor of America's energy heartlands carries responsibilities beyond just being a community organizer, and so now, you must feel fully prepared to lead this great nation.

SP [waits 5 seconds with blank stare]: Al-Qaeda and the Democrats have a plan to teach your children in the public schools of America that bestiality is o.k.. It's time we ended education. It's a child's personal responsibility to find out how the world is.

CG: As a fresh and honest Washington outsider, what will you do to end the ballooning of our bureaucracy the Democrats have fueled for the last 40 years?

SP [waits 5 seconds with blank stare]: We fully support Bristol in my decision. America is a place where God has given us the freedom to say choice is bad.

CG: Any final thoughts before you are elected?

SP [waits 5 seconds with blank stare]: Being a POW has prepared me to be a courageous vice-president. Al-Qaeda and the Democrats want to ship your jobs to China and take away your right to use nuclear weapons. My government will act within it's first 100 days to ensure that every phone line is monitored to keep America safe from Al-Qaeda and the Democrats. Remember, first they raise taxes, then they behead you.

CG: Thank you, President, er, Governor.

  42. Mind you, I do not think Mr. O is actually a Muslim, despite what he may say while being interviewed. He may even be a Christian of some sort, probably a very poor sort. What is abundantly clear, however, is that he is not ready for prime time. Admittedly, Palin is certainly not either, but at least she is thankfully not at the top of the ticket. The pressure of impending failure is perhaps pushing Barky close to the breaking point, which is sad, but only adds further evidence to what has been clear all along--he's not presidential material yet and may never be.

  45. my banning really profoundly tee me off. not so much that it resulted in a blood pressure rise, but seriously nonetheless.

i may have indeed gone too far from time to time, i admit, but at least i think i have been entertaining to those who dont take me too seriously and even more entertaining when some no humor dingdong DID take me too seriously...

and god knows i may have had minor disagreements with the editorial staff in regard to issues from time to time but

    a) always made it clear that i loved their mag and respected them even if i differed slightly in opinion AND

    b) consistantly defended them against spurious and nasty attacks by rightwing trolls AND

    c) consistantly kissed their posteriors a little on top of that just in case...

and then for some unknown reason they up and ban me...

and not only do they ban me, they do so in a profoundly humiliating way, leaving me to sporadically babble at myself (been busy, so did not notice until embarassingly late) and think i was pissing all my old friends off since nobody ever responded to me...

not to mention that i'm pretty sure that to do such a thing involves the dumping of semi malicious software on my lappy since my anti-virus program gets all warny often when i log in here...

but...i'm bigger than that. i see the big picture, have no pride, and would never childishly turn coat over something so petty and silly, so here i am again.

quite honestly for several months i was intermittantly employed, caring for an elderly relative and although i have been blessed with the deaths of some wealthy relatives and have responsibly and cleverly invested my earned money over the years i was in no way giving money to anybody until i was fully employed, as i am now.

    and they effin banned me!

  46. I win, I win, I win. And indeed, you win too, for I have more thoughts, sobering though they be, to share with you:

WITH UNCONTROLLABLE VIOLENCE AND A HOPELESSLY CORRUPT POLITICAL LEADERSHIP, CHICAGO IS NOT WORTH FIGHTING FOR. AMERICA SHOULD PULL OUT OF CHICAGO IMMEDIATELY. THE CHICAGOANS MUST BE LEFT TO WORK OUT THEIR OWN POLITICAL FUTURE.

Chicago, home to and political base of Barack Obama, has had a tragically busy summer. So busy that the American death toll is higher there than it is in Iraq: Total Is About Double the Death Toll In Iraq:

CHICAGO (CBS) - An estimated 123 people were shot and killed over the summer. That's nearly double the number of soldiers killed in Iraq over the same time period.

In May, cbs2chicago.com began tracking city shootings and posting them on Google maps. Information compiled from our reporters, wire service reports and the Chicago Police Major Incidents log indicated that 123 people were shot and killed throughout the city between the start of Memorial Day weekend on May 26, and the end of Labor Day on Sept. 1.

According to the Defense Department, 65 soldiers were killed in combat in Iraq. About the same number were killed in Afghanistan over that same period.

In the same time period, an estimated 245 people were shot and wounded in the city.

[We must also add a half dozen or so people tragically cut down this past week too. --ed.]

This is the only nick I have ever been. I have never posted, ever, under any other.

I am new only in that regard.

I have read this blog, in detail and consistently, for just shy of eight years. Lurking, as Mask sometimes liked to call it.

After that period of time, you feel like you get to know people.

After Frosty disappeared during his excessively extended "news break", and with no explanation as to why and nobody seemed to notice, I couldn't stand it any longer and logged in to frickin find out why.

Mask didn't know, though he suspected.

It was IBBLE who knew, and told me why.

Shortly thereafter, Sjchermak pissed Frosty off passed the point of no return, and the rest is history.

    All is well again.

so you were a lurker, eh? well, i for one am glad you jumped in.

(benchrest is either kieth olberman or chris matthews in real life - thats how msnbc keeps robbing me for material! har har har!!!)

hows that for a delusional megalomaniacal ego?

oh dont get me wrong! i AM perversely proud of having been banned and therefore a part of the bad boys club...

just fires my oppositional defiant ego and makes me want to be even worse (therefore the new evil handle)...

so guess i'll have to keep that inmind as i snarl and claw...

though god knows...if LIBZSUX is any guage...

like i said, the only way to get permanantly banned is to die!!!

,aybe that "warn this person" has something to do with it, but if it does it must take X number of warnings then automatically bans...i'll ask my computer/web guru one day when i'm thinking about it.

  98. Problem: the "reporters" you refer to Mr Ari aint reporters but soldiers in a war of evil against good.

I am referring to the extreme fascist left of the lot, the mob who created Obama out of thin air and pushed him onto the confused youth of this country as the Messiah.

The appearance out of nowhere of Sarah Palin, who clearly is a creation OF HER OWN WILL AND POWER, not of some fringe mob, has thrown a huge wrench in the spokes of the "movement".

This Melber "reporter" is clearly one of this fascist mob along with the gang at CNN, MSNBC, NBC, NYT.

Sarah Palin should not - NOT - speak to any "reporter" until after elections for this reason: the jackals believe she is unprepared, weak, vulnerable. They want her NOW, before she is ready for them.

If she refuses to allow them near her, they will simply die of frustration. They will explode with hatred. They will swallow their laptop keyboards whole.

By doing nothing, by not speaking to the fascists, Sarah will vanquish them, and the world will be a far better place.

Lawrence Leaves of Grass, by Walt Whitman Little Red Riding Hood, by the Grimm Brothers Lord of the Flies, by William Golding Lysistrata, by Aristophanes Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck To Kill a Mocking Bird, by Harper Lee One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, by Ken Kesey The Chocolate War, by Robert Cormier Pigman, by Paul Zindel

Plus: Anything by Stephen King, everything by J.K. Rowling, just about everything by Roald Dahl, both of Mark Twain's major works, most of Judy Blume, most of William Shakespeare, and (this is truly mind-boggling) Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary by the Merriam-Webster Editorial Staff.

GalleyCat@mediabistro.com slyly comments, "Maybe if she didn't want to ban Our Bodies, Ourselves by Boston Women's Health Collective her daughter Bristol wouldn't be having a shotgun wedding." Yes, that book is one of those she wanted to ban.

Now I get it, finally ... why she went to so many colleges in so many years ... she was so busy reading.

So many books, so many long words, so many languages to master first (Middle English, Attic Greek) to expose the hidden meanings ... who knew she was such a scholar?

OTH: who gave her this list? and who originally drafted it? does it exist elsewhere?

  111. The headline reads: "Palin reverses Press Ban." Not quite. She still hasn't submitted herself to the press, and has only committed, in principle, to one interview--with softball lobbing Charles Gibson.

Only the passage of time will reveal the extent to which Palin keeps her promise. Moreover, the initial ban by her handlers is partiuclarly enlightening. It appears that the GOP's electric and dynamic savior is, in actuality, merely a pretty face who reads copy well. IMHO,. sophisticated republican insiders are terrified about "releasing" her to the press. The woman may be a tiger, and give a good speech, but my gut feeling is that she ain't the sharpest pencil in the cup. After all, how many rocket scientists take six eyars and five colleges to obtain a B.A., financed, albeit in small part, by donning a tight swimsuit and glittery high heels, and then turning her back to wiggle her ass in front of a bunch of old Alaskan men.

And finally, they have yet to publish "Foreign Policy for Dummies."

There is simply not enough time left for behind-the-scenes polishing, proving, once again, all that glitters is not gold.

and of course mr. obama is for it. james johnson told him what to do.

but if no bailout, then what?

a crisis like this is not the time to redo the system. just imagine if they DID COLLAPSE. EGAD! the chinese would be furious!

(secondary mortgage markets managed by a non-governmental government agency are the perfect vehicle for all sorts of monkey business. the whole DEREGULATION business finalized by clinton sure has a lot to do with this. remember robert rubin?.)

obama must now take over the debate from the punditocracy and ignore the silly "how can she juggle family and career?" stupidity. hit her hard on issues and what record she has.

    great - she is a woman...she has a career...fine...

american women - are you REALLY her? do you REALLY identify with sarah palin?

and then hit her where she is weak - record and ideology...

remind the people how moderate W talked in the 2000 election...remind people how the gop has behaved...

throw up things like her support for seccecionism and her stated policies/actions on record...then if the republicans start whining about the dems being mean they will look whiney and shrill.

change? look at her record and ask yourself this...

does her record really say "change"? does her ideology really indicate the change you want? or is she just a fresh, glitzy face with the same attitude, ideology, and friends as those who have been in power for 8 years?

remind the people of how bush talked in 00 and contrast this to how he walked for 8 years...make the connection...

And only a problem if the MSM actually dealt in substance.

People understand tags and/or symbols. New con repub dic'tatorship follower makers understand that what people get in a mass market sale.

Dems need to sale the image of new con repub's as liars, big time. Every ad has to show one new con repub lie after another; not to be trusted. It's too complicated to just tie hsuB/cHeney to McPOWhowmanyMANSIONS, so what about it? That needs to be totally clear as to why that's a bad thing.

I am despondent because Mr. (911/National Security) Dick Cheny is saying Sarah Palin is ready to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency. Obama was wrong about this country being America. It is a blue/Red country. The Republican party in it's quest for power and to keep the uber wealthy WEALTHY... The GOP will do anything to stay in power. A shameful party it is and yes I will say evil. They throw cultural wedges out there to blind the less fortunate ignorant. For Obama was a dream that came soo close to reality. I also blame Obama's campaign for not seeing the Palin move coming and in the end it was inexperienced in how to close the deal. I will admit a mistake for the first time and apologize to my brother and sister who were Hillary supporters. For I'd rather had Hillary over McCain & Palin any day of the next 4 long cold years. The Clinton's are it seems the only one's able to fend of the GOP's ugly machine. Don't lok fo much help to Obama from them. They know Hillary can run in 4 years. The election has not been held and i know polls mean nothing except the officila polls on Nov 4th. But the race is ratcheting up and Obama lied to me when he said he would not be swift boated. For Obama has been swiftboated. It will be a vey sad day for me personally on Nov 4th. I look forward to the future and fighting in the second civil war between the Blue & the Red.

I guess it's just a white, feminist thing.) I know that many of you don't dig this, but journalism is a constitutionally-protected job. Because of this, if you're running for one of the two highest offices in our nation, you should be scrutinzed by the press. It's what we do, and the First Amendment allows us to ask you questions about your policies, the dumb shit you've said, and other things that you've used to prop yourself up. If you don't like that level of scrutiny, drop out. But if you're not gonna drop out, stop whining, answer the questions and shut the fuck up. The one thing that Palin has going for her is that Charlie Gibson is going to be asking the questions. Since he's one of the two knuckleheads that took two hours of my life that I'll never get back from me in April in the name of a presidential debate on ABC, she'll be made to look like the second coming of Margaret Thatcher.

If she's so "out of her league" Metteyya, explain to me why her rise has pushed Obama off the front page. And why you are so freaked out. Shouldn't her inability be obvious to everyone?

You can't be a "legitimate" demographic that a "president" should kiss up to if you think black people are inferior because of the pigmentation of their skin, the texture of their hair, and the width of their noses.

Did you even watch the DNC?

Have you considered the business record of Joe Biden?

Citing business failures as an executive disqualification only proves your naivite and lack of any real business experience.

  166. Funny about the term "redneck". Depending on what part of the world you are from, one's definition may be different. I was watching the History Channel last week and they were discussing how in WV during the early 20th century, mine workers(?) came together to protest low wages. To show solidarity, the workers involved in the protest/strike wore red bandannas around their necks. Because of the red bandannas, workers were referred to as "rednecks". Did anybody else see the episode. I thought it was interesting that an origin for the term "redneck" can be linked to unionization.

Obama has little national experience himself, and when you hear his story, I hear, "lucky as heck that he made the right connections at the right time" Wasn't long ago he lost a race for another job. Palin may be new, and yes, I believe she is new to national media, and yes, I believe she is being sheltered a little...so what!! You will have plenty of time to tell her how much you hate her and how many times she says "a" instead of "the"...Sen. Obama is a great orator...but that doesn't mean he will be a great President. No, that was a definition of "redneck" from Urban Dictionary.

I just use the common definition of redneck, which is a "lower-class racist white person".

Palin can't pick and choose which qualities of the redneck to embrace or not, especially when she names her marketing business "red neck".

She clearly is embracing everything about the redneck, including their RACIST views.

    Posted by Metteyya at 09/08/2008 @ 3:19pm

The article is on the mark as to limousine progessives or liberals and their contempt or lack of understanding of the swath of America they advocate for (or use). If Palin were a Democrat she would be a dream progressive candidate -- a Wal-Mart mother fighting for progressive causes. If D's lose this year, the best thing would be for Katrina and Company to move and publish the Progressive from Kansas City or Omaha. If 99% of self-described "rednecks" are racists, pointing to someone in the 1% small minority and saying "see, I didn't mean 'racist' when I said 'redneck' " is disingenuous and does not fool anyone, especially most Americans that already know what a redneck is.

Palin, YOU WANT TO APPEAL TO LOWER-CLASS "RACIST" WHITE VOTERS AND THAT IS WHY YOU USE THE TERM REDNECK AS THE NAME OF YOUR BUSINESS.

Redneck is sort of like saying Hockey Mom or Country Music lover. We all know there may be a rich guy or black or two in those groups, but 99% or more are WHITE "and" RACIST.

Yes, I think they will be fun...for the fact that the Right and their Spin Machine (Rush, Fox News, various talking heads) will say one of two things-

    1. Scenario A- Palin holds her own, maybe exceeds expectations. "Ha! So much for Biden's genius. She put him in his place and shows she's upto speed on all issues!"

    2. (more likely) Scenario B- She barely makes it through, even pulls a "Quayle vs. Bentsen" moment or two. Biden asks her a complicated question on foreign affairs, that she has no pat answer for...or worse, GIVES a blatently pat answer for.

And the Right says "Biden was being condescending!..he was attacking a WOMAN!...he is a sexist pig who was demeaning her!" and various hypocrises, much less inaccuracies.

Right upto Palin saying "Nuke da bastards!" on a question about Iran...you, HAPP, LVLIB, DARIN will defend her debate skills as "Lincolnesque" or Biden's rhetorical destruction of her as the martyrdom of Joan of Arc.

But her actually "win" (by debate class standards) a debate against Biden....dubious at best.

    Posted by Maskdelta at 09/08/2008 @ 4:24pm

  185. Metteyya, I need not say a word. Your blatant racism towards white americans is plain for anyone to see.

There is no debate with someone who apparently speaks for "all americans."

Your words and Weltansschaung stand by themselves in contrast to your desired results of a racist free america. You are magnificant in your liberalism. You accuse all around you, but fail to recognize that you are the true racist here.

It is very affirming and I thank you. I am energized to do all I can to keep people with your views, as entertaining as they are, as far away from power as possible.

I don't think you're much swayed by the opoinions of Keith Olberman vs Bill O'Reilly, are you?

You need to travel more - and don't be afraid to hang out in some of those truck stops along the way and get a real taste for what being a redneck in America really means.

If you think I am a racist for pointing out the obvious, then you have real issues that you don't want to face yourself.

The problem is usually never the messenger, the problem you have is that Palin's message is targeting "racist white voters", and you are having a hard time acknowledging this reality because YOU find her message appealing.

Fortunately for Obama, Palin has other more serious problems with her character, and as this emerges, she will sink the McCain ticket.

    Posted by Metteyya at 09/08/2008 @ 4:47pm

  188. Golly Metteyya, I've been to 9 different states this year and 5 countries. So I'm actually getting in some travel.

I even have relatives in *GASP* Tennessee and Ohio and Florida! And they wear... brace yourself... ball caps ALL THE TIME!!!

So tell me, is your entire exposure to red necks limited to the last 20 minutes of Easy Rider, or what? Because that's what it looks like to me.

But you know, when they're not clinging to their religion and guns, they are surprisingly tolerant of people different than them. All kidding aside, sure there are racists amongst 'red necks'. Just like there are racist pastors in chicago, and you know what I'm talkin bout, right?

I just think your racism brush is a bit too broad. It's a frickin roller brush. And I think you are completely missing the obvious problems Obama faces with his character under scrutiny.

My advice, as I've been saying all along, side-step Palin and focus on the issues. You will not win a closet cleaning competition - especially considering Hillary's motivations to see Obama lose.

Or better, ignore the current polls and continue as you are towards defeat.

  189. From this afternoon's news:

"Obama said the McCain campaign is deliberately avoiding the U.S. economy, hoping instead to make the presidential election a contest of personalities."

And, if at all true, McCain can thank you personally Metteyya. Keep referring to Palin as searching out racists for support. Harp the french thing. Yeah, that'll infuriate the truck stops!

Obama/Biden ought to have you on payroll! ;-)

While that's going on, have you even contemplated what the bailout of Freddie/Fannie means to you personally? And who is protected? (Hint: It ain't the people dude.) And is it a good or bad thing that Obama is FOR this $100B bailout? Do you even know?

Our system is entirely captive to the banking cartel called the Federal Reserve. The bailout occurs over the weekend news cycle and I contest the vast majority of americans on both sides of the aisle are totally unaware of what has just taken place.

Fannie Mae and Freedie Mac were started as PUBLIC loan guarantee institutions to jump start the post-Depression economy.

Correct me if my history is wrong.

Later, FM & FM were privatized.

The Federal Reserve was created as a privatized Treasury. Down with big govt. Let private bankers run things, because THEY know best. To do otherwise, that would be "socialism". Govt cannot afford to hire the best experts like a bunch of Wall Street bankers. Worse, it's a private banking cartel with quasi-govt protection, plus mild reporting requirements.

I agree that the Fed should be abolished, but that will not really make a huge dent in how the Constitution was subverted and perverted by ACTIVIST JUDGES to develop "corporate personhood", full civil rights, no personal liabilities, moral hazard, etc.

WASHINGTON - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has charged her state a daily allowance, normally used for official travel, for more than 300 nights spent at her home, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

An analysis of travel statements filed by the governor, now John McCain's Republican running mate, shows she claimed the per diem allowance on 312 occasions when she was home in Wasilla and that she billed taxpayers $43,490 for travel by her husband and children.
