During the week of October 21, far-right wing operative and former communist agitator David Horowitz deployed his allies to college campuses America to spout crude anti-Muslim invective and hype the threat of more terror attacks on the United States. Horowitz called this event "Islamofascism Awareness Week." Among his stable of campus speakers were noted Islam experts Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity.
"Islamofascism Awareness Week" was, from the beginning, little more than a marathon fashion show for the paranoid style. But it was not until Horowitz muscled his way onto the campus of his alma mater, Columbia University, on October 26 that his event attained the commanding heights of reactionary hysteria.
Pacing the stage like a drunken circus clown impersonating some bygone demagogue, and standing beneath a massive image of a woman being shot in the head, Horowitz launched into a long, frenetic rant about his own persecution at the hands of a shadowy liberal conspiracy.
Though Horowitz devoted portions of his tirade to attacks on the Muslim Students Association, which he sought to paint as a front for virtually every Islamist group that strikes fear in the heart of his culturally deprived conservative peanut gallery, he seemed more comfortable lashing out at his perceived oppressors -- liberal professors, leftists, and the Democratic party -- than he did at any so-called "Islamofascists."
When I asked Horowitz about his weird comparison of his own father to 9/11 mastermind Mohammed Atta in his book, "The End of Time," his hysteria peaked. My question provoked him to link Jerry Falwell, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and "Jerry Springer and all his guests" together in a plot to bring social justice to the world "at the point of a gun."
Listening to Horowitz was like being trapped in a subway car with a raving derelict for an hour and a half. But unlike in the subway, where the transit police usually arrive to remove the derelict, the police came to Columbia to protect Horowitz from the non-existent security threat he had invoked in fundraising appeals for days leading up to his speech.
Horowitz's performance had to be seen to be believed. Luckily, despite being forbidden to film by the president of the Columbia University College Republicans, my co-producer, Thomas Shomaker, and I managed to smuggle a camera into Horowitz's speech and record it all.
Take a look at our latest video, "The Demons of David Horowitz."

Horowitz's life trajectory is fascinating. A political aide to Bertrand Russell in the 60's, to Ramparts editor, to close friend and biographer of Isaac Deutscher --the writer of an acclaimed epic multi-volume biography of Leon Trotsky-- to present painter in possession of a putrid palette of pabulum.
I'm too young to remark on the previous clarity of his mind, but whatever amount he possessed in the past is emphatically gone today.
Thanks for the fascinating zoo feature of the day, Max.

Another fighter of the mythical Islamofascist was indicted yesterday. Bernie Kerik, one time nominee for Peerless Leader of the Homeland Security Dept and Ministry of information, was indicted on charges of corruption. I am wondering if that is one of the criteria for defeating a few thousand wackos, being corrupt. An awful lot of the Play-ahs in this failing GWOT seem to hold that position.

A sure sign of freedom of the press, freedom of expression and just plain freedom, is the banning of all video cameras from a public forum for people speaking while campus security pays for their security.

Christopher Hitchens -- God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything.
'...But Islam when examined is not much more than a rather obvious and ill-arranged set of plagiarisms, helping itself from earlier books and traditions as occasion appeared to require. .... It makes immense claims for itself, invokes prostrate submission or "surrender" as a maxim to its adherents, and demands deference and respect from nonbelievers into the bargain. There is nothing--absolutely nothing--in its teachings that can even begin to justify such arrogance and presumption....It was noticed even by some of his wives that the Prophet was capable of having a "revelation" that happened to suit his short-term needs, and he was sometimes teased about it. We are further told--on no authority that need be believed--that when he experienced revelation in public he would sometimes be gripped by pain and experience loud ringing in his ears. Beads of sweat would burst out on him, even on the chilliest of days. Some heartless Christian critics have suggested that he was an epileptic (though they fail to notice the same symptoms in the seizure experienced by Paul on the road to Damascus), but there is no need for us to speculate in this way.... one can only regret the seeming fact that direct communication with g-d is not an experience of calm, beauty, and lucidity. Christopher Hitchens -- God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything:
'Religious faith is, precisely because we are still-evolving creatures, ineradicable. It will never die out, or at least not until we get over our fear of death, and of the dark, and of the unknown, and of each other. For this reason, I would not prohibit it even if I thought I could. Very generous of me, you may say. But will the religious grant me the same indulgence? I ask because there is a real and serious difference between me and my religious friends, and the real and serious friends are sufficiently honest to admit it. I would be quite content to go to their children's bar mitzvahs, to marvel at their Gothic cathedrals, to "respect" their belief that the Koran was dictated, though exclusively in Arabic, to an illiterate merchant, or to interest myself in Wicca and Hindu and Jain consolations. And as it happens, I will continue to do this without insisting on the polite reciprocal condition--which is that they in turn leave me alone. But this, religion is ultimately incapable of doing. As I write these words, and as you read them, people of faith are in their different ways planning your and my destruction, and the destruction of all the hard-won human attainments that I have touched upon. Religion poisons everything.'

hitchens' is as much a slave to western ethnocentric abrahamic religion as he claims those who acknowledge such are, but like the angry ever rebelling adult adolescent satanist, incapable of comprehending spirituality in any other way than the petty, concrete objectivist, silly, childish, personal god/boogyman mode he rails against.
because for all his education and bloviating pontification he is incapable of comprehending religion without an invisible demiurge-like simplistic personal "god"...
AND SINCE HE THINKS OF HIMSELF AS BEING SO INTELLIGENT...AND HE CAN'T UNDERSTAND RELIGIOUS THINKING BEYOND THE HOLY BOOGYMAN LEVEL...ALL RELIGION IS STUPID...NOT HE WHO DOES NOT UNDERSTAND...

hitchens, like friedman, an intellect far too overrated. at least friedman is a master of the obvious after the fact - hitchens still supports the iraq fiasco, cannot distinguish gradation of religious faith, and seems to get away with his b minus/c plus interpretations purely because of his irritating limey accent, ever confused in this country with education, refinement, and intellect.

my problem with him is that like so many angry western atheists...he ignores anything outside western abrahamic personal god traditions. this i find ironically ignorant, ethnocentric, and...closed minded - exactly what he rails against.
again, like the angry satanist railing and flailing against a specific creed, hitchens betrays his intellectual bondage to that against which he rails and in the process miss out on a very big part of the picture...the non abrahamic religious traditions, often dismissed by educated beyond their intelligence sophists like hitchens as non-religions because they don't speak of a personal god!
ugh!

Christopher Hitchens -- God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything:
'...There are four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum of servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking. ...
And here is the point, about myself and my co-thinkers. Our belief is not a belief. Our principles are not a faith. We do not rely solely upon science and reason, because these are necessary rather than sufficient factors, but we distrust anything that contradicts science or outrages reason. We may differ on many things, but what we respect is free inquiry, openmindedness, and the pursuit of ideas for their own sake. ...
We believe with certainty that an ethical life can be lived without religion. And we know for a fact that the corollary holds true--that religion has caused innumerable people not just to conduct themselves no better than others, but to award themselves permission to behave in ways that would make a brothel-keeper or an ethnic cleanser raise an eyebrow....'

Well in that dont you think its fascianting that so many traitors to the USA have been liberals and demmocrats?
State Department officers Alger Hiss and Laurence Duggan who gave the Soviets wartime intelligence.
Lauchlin Currie, a friend and aide to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, notified Soviet intelligence when agents operating in the United States were dubbed suspicious by U.S. intelligence and law enforcement.
Duncan Lee, an assistant to OSS Chief William Donovan, divulged a plethora of intelligence secrets to Moscow.
Three members of the Treasury Department sold the Soviets weapons designs, economic assessments, and other classified information.
An NSA linguist, William Weisband, who briefly contributed to Venona by translating intercepts, notified Soviet intelligence of the project's existence.
However, the most notorious, and perhaps the most threatening to national security, of the agents identified by Venona intercepts was the network of Soviet atomic spies. Venona intercepts proved that Soviet agents had infiltrated most areas of the Manhattan Project, and had obtained secrets from ultra-secure sites such as the Oak Ridge and Los Alamos. In 1947, it was discovered that the Soviets had placed several intelligence sources in the War Department. While Gardner uncovered several dozen codenames in communications regarding atomic secrets, Venona intercepts added to the cases against spies Klaus Fuchs, Theodore Hall, and Julius Rosenberg.
Sorry all were LIBERAL DEMOCRATS!!! FASCINATING huh? I know it might be disturbing information for some, but the first step is to admit what you have a tendency to be, sorry these are the facts and they are not subject ot debate.

There are four irreducible objections to religious faith....
I'll only point out that some religious people view sex as a means of achieving union with God, a la Kama Sutra and it may very well be that origin stories are not meant to be taken literally.
Where does that leave these objections? There are many good arguments against religion. It is unfortunately that someone so against it couldn't figure out how to offer any.
Our belief is not a belief.
Speaking of outrages to reason. Try replacing belief with any other noun and see if this makes any sense. Our cow is not a cow. Our madness is not a madness. Let's just say this is not his shining moment.
We believe with certainty that an ethical life can be lived without religion.
Belief with certainty? Does that make it true? There are some that would claim ethical living is religious living.
"...that religion has caused innumerable people not just to conduct themselves no better than others, but to award themselves permission to behave in ways that would make a brothel-keeper or an ethnic cleanser raise an eyebrow..."
Same could be said of those without religion. In other words, it's not particularly meaningful.
I could go on. The point is that this author you insist on quoting doesn't do a particularly effective job of presenting an argument against religion.
Further, many religious people are very tolerant of other religious traditions. It shows that he is...how do you put it...critizing what he doesn't understand.

And despite their cruel, bloodthirsty and savage ways, both have fanatical supporters who defend their actions to this day.

Though it is doubtful any of you will do so, I recommend you read Robert Spencer's "The Politically Correct Guide to Islam". It exposes the true nature and history of Islam versus the politically correct versions that liberals have tried to pass off. Islamists attack him repeatedly, but are unable to debunk his facts.

Christopher Hitchens -- God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything:
'...The likelihood that any of this humanly derived rhetoric is "inerrant," let alone "final," is conclusively disproved not just by its innumerable contradictions and incoherencies but by the famous episode of the Koran's alleged "satanic verses," out of which Salman Rushdie was later to make a literary project. On this much-discussed occasion, Muhammad was seeking to conciliate some leading Meccan polytheists and in due course experienced a "revelation" that allowed them after all to continue worshipping some of the older local deities. It struck him later that this could not be right and that he must have inadvertently been "channeled" by the devil, who for some reason had briefly chosen to relax his habit of combating monotheists on their own ground. (Muhammad believed devoutly not just in the devil himself but in minor desert devils, or djinns, as well.) ...'

SRJ,
You are demonstrating that you really don't know anything about the Quran or Islam. What we are seeing is the resurgence of historic Islam driven by their sense of empowerment created in large part by the price of Oil and their global expansion into Asia and Southeast Asia. Islam was quite weakened for centuries and is now feeling their ability to reclaim their obedience to the commands of Mohammad and "Allah".
Again, read Spencer's book and then tell me where he is wrong.
Show me where the New Testament orders the murder of unbelievers, or their being subjected to subservience under the dictates of Dhimmitude. Read books like The Dhimmi: Jews and Christians under Islam or Islam and Dhimmitude: Where Civilizations Collide both by Bat Ye'or. Read Jihad in the West: Muslim Conquests from the 7th to the 21st Century by Paul Fregosi.
Read what the Islamic Clerics maintain even today about Dhimmi and unbelievers;
If the unbelievers live among the Muslims, in accordance with the conditions set out by the Prophet-there is nothing wrong with it provided they pay Jizya to the Islamic Treasury. Other conditions are...that they do not renovate a church or a monastery, do not rebuild ones that were destroyed, that they feed for three days any Muslim who passes by their homes...that they rise when a Muslim wishes to sit, that they do not imitate Muslims in dress and speech, nor ride horses, nor own swords, nor arm themselves with any kind of weapons; that they do not sell wine, do not show the cross, do not ring church bells, do not raise their voices during prayer, that they shave their hair in front so as to make them easily identifiable, do not incite anyone against the Muslims, and not not strike a Muslim...if they violate these conditions, they have no protection.

I seem to remember christianity being marred by just a FEW things LVLIB, do I need to present you with a list of offenses that would condemn you and every god-fearing American if we were to follow your logic?
Posted by MADLIB 11/09/2007 @ 3:51pm
Offenses occur and should not be condoned. However that is separate from having your religious text command such offenses. Can you site similar commands in the Bible towards unbelievers?
Posted by lvliberty1 at 11/09/2007 @ 4:18pm
I hope everything works out for you in the end.

It will, it's called heaven.

EVERY Muslim, as he'll tell you, even those "so-called" liberal ones....is a potential bin Laden...just chomping at the bit to blow themsleves up in the Mall of America!
Duh!

Same challenge to you Mask. Simply show me where the NT Bible requires Christians to kill unbelievers or to make them live in subservience to Christians. Show me where Christ commanded his followers to take "booty" (Mohammad's words, not mine) when conducting war against the infidels?

LVLIB...do you EVER quote the Old Testament to support some contention for your sermons? Ever?
If I asked you about the "Christianity" of "nuking 3-5 Chinese cities" or "Dresdenizing a few cities in the Middle East"....which YOU as not only a Christian but a Christian minister ENDORSE...
what would you quote from the Bible? Luke?....Acts?...maybe Revelation of St. John?
So....you want to wrap yourself in the love and inclusiveness of the NT, when you want to compare Christians to Muslims....but on other occasions, you're perfectly happy to quote Exodus, Leviticus, etc. when you want to vaporize a few million people (who JUST HAPPEN to be "non-believers" like atheist Communist Chinese or "Mohammedans"!).

I pointed out LVLIB's main hypocrisy above, MAD.
Compare Christianity to Islam...he pulls "jihad" quotes from the Qu'ran and says "Compare that to the NEW Testament!!!!"
Ask him about fighting war or Who Would Jesus Nuke?....and he'll pull out enough OLD Testament quotes to strangle a horse.
Oh, but those Muslims only want to kill people....Christians (like LVLIB) want to liberate them...well, the survivors anyway.

I'm sorry Mask, but I don't have time right now, I'm late getting on the road and I have a 4 hour drive ahead of me. I'f I don't respond by Tuesday when I get home, remind me (I'm sure you will).
BTW, my nuke quotes were not based upon scripture but from my military experience and political judgment. I am also a citizen besides being a Christian.

no reply from CPT regarding his complete disregard for his superior officers?
Imagine some special ops captured by the Iranian version of the CIA, CPt would have to stand aside as they tortured his men. All perfectly acceptable.
I note that the folks CPT and LUVVY resemble are the POL Pots and such in their regard for the laws of man. Tyrants like Pot used waterboarding to gain information too. Lets apply CPT logic and extrapolate from there.
boy do these guys make it easy. Situational logic/ethics

He's mostly honest...if hypocritical, MATT.
I think he WILL answer me on Tuesday. But it'll be self-serving and self-incriminating.
Notice what he tried...he wanted us to compare NEW Testament Christianity to the whole of Islam/Qu'ran.
Yet, do you think LVLIB ONLY uses the New Testament in his sermons and writings? When it comes to war, homosexuality, etc....how much "OT" and how much "NT" you think his ratio is?

Simple question for CPT, CRAB....
What does the US Army Field Manual say about water-boarding?
Just that...no elaboration, no attack....just try to get him to answer it, then ask the next logical question...."Why?"

Gee, bet it corresponds to what the JAGS say. But we know that source is tinted, regardless of rank.

Next up, new book on the Anti-abortion movement, titled " Doctor Killing Scum!" And then one about veterans: "Child Care Bombers!".
Always a right wing American Taliban.
coincidence?
such fun logic!!!

Then one about a soldier who has no regard for rank, law or morality, title "Traitor!"
Law suit to be filed by the Ghoul coulter, causing the ranks of wealthy lawyers to swell by one.

Show me where the New Testament orders the murder of unbelievers, or their being subjected to subservience under the dictates of Dhimmitude.
Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Matthew 7: 19-20.
It is a fact that people that have claimed to be Christians brutally suppressed people they considered to be heretics or infidels - whether fellow Christians, Jews, Muslims or those not part of the Judeo-Christian tradition. In many of these circumstances, people asserted that the NT condoned their actions.
But the really interesting part for me is that the concepts of Dhimmitude are part of the sharia - or Islamic Law. So, in order to have an apples to oranges comparison, we can't just look at the New Testament but instead need to consider the Canon Law of the Catholic Church and/or the by-laws of Protestant churches.
Now, that we have changed it to the appropriate scope, are you feeling as confident that the same cannot be said of Christianity? I don't.

"Then the LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid or discouraged. Take the entire army and attack Ai, for I have given to you the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land. You will destroy them as you destroyed Jericho and its king. But this time you may keep the captured goods and the cattle for yourselves. Set an ambush behind the city."
"While the Israelites were in the desert, a man was discovered gathering wood on the Sabbath day. Those who caught him at it brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly. But they kept him in custody, for there was no clear decision as to what should be done with him. Then the Lord said to Moses, "This man shall be put to death; let the whole community stone him outside the camp."
"As soon as Jehu had finished sacrificing the burnt offering, he commanded his guards and officers, "Go in and kill all of them. Don't let a single one escape!" So they killed them all with their swords, and the guards and officers dragged their bodies outside. Then Jehu's men went into the fortress of the temple of Baal. They dragged out the sacred pillar used in the worship of Baal and destroyed it. They broke down the sacred pillar of Baal and wrecked the temple of Baal, converting it into a public toilet. That is what it is used for to this day." 2 Kings 10:18-27 NLT
Sure, that's "old testament", but it is all the same to us non-superstitious folks....and to you superstitious whackjobs, when it suits your (reasonless) argument.
Big bunch of dangerous, contradictory fairy tales.
Xtians, muslims, jews, hindus...whatever....superstitious, dangerous (by virtue of lack of thought or reason) bullshit.

The problem with most people that don't like religion is that they are too busy disbelieving in a different God than the one I believe in.
