Bush's nominee for surgeon general, Dr. James Holsinger, has come under fire this week for his anti-gay politics (first documented by Bible Belt Blogger Frank Lockwood). By day Holsinger teaches health sciences at the University of Kentucky where he was chancellor of the Chandler Medical Center. By night, however, the good doctor is a bible-thumping Reverend with a degree in biblical studies from Asbury Theological Seminary and a seeming fascination of antipathy towards homosexuals.
Holsinger founded the Hope Springs Community Church, a "recovery ministry" that caters to alcoholics, drug addicts, sex addicts and those seeking to "walk out of that [homosexual] lifestyle," according to its pastor Rev. David Calhoun. When not busy endorsing ex-gay conversion therapy, Holsinger served on the highest court of the United Methodist Church where he voted to remove a lesbian pastor from her position.
And today, the Human Rights Campaign released a document Holsinger authored in 1991 as a member of the United Methodist Church's Committee to Study Homosexuality. Titled Pathophysiology of Male Homosexuality, Holsinger's religious tract-cum-scientific paper is a fascinating window into the perverse imagination of homophobia. In essence, Holsinger argues that male-female "reproductive systems are fully complementary" because "anatomically the vagina is designed to receive the penis." The remainder of his paper is a graphic account of the "delicate" rectum which is "incapable" of "protection" if "objects that are large, sharp, or pointed are inserted" into it. From there Holsinger continues to discuss what he imagines are the pains (and pleasures?) of anal sex, from "fist fornication" and "sphincter injuries" to "lacerations," "perforations" and "deaths seen in connection with anal eroticism."
Sharp objects! Deaths seen in connection with anal eroticism! Gadzooks! Now, I've been around the block one or ten times, and I don't know any gay men who have put scissors up their ass, much less died from it. Of course, the barely mentioned but palpably anxious context in which Holsinger connects "death" with "anal eroticism" is the AIDS epidemic. And it should come as no surprise that his paper was part of a larger, pseudo-medical, moral discourse in which gay men's mode of sex (and by extension gay men) were blamed for AIDS - the death we deserved, the sexual suicide we courted.
The flip side of Dr. Holsinger's lurid speculation is the dangerous presumption that because heterosexual sex is "natural," it is safe -- safe from HIV, other sexually transmitted diseases and the trauma and injury that Holsinger seems so feverishly eager to attribute to gay anal sex. We now know, tragically and beyond any possible doubt, that heterosexual sex is not safe unless one practices it as such. And no amount of wishing and praying by our next Surgeon General on the "complementarity of the human sexes" will make it so.
A few years after Dr. Holsinger wrote his little brief against male-male anal sex, then Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders suggested, at a UN Conference on AIDS, that masturbation might be taught to young people as a mode of reducing sexual risk. On this point she was absolutely correct, but for even daring to mention the M-word, she was lampooned by the Christian right and eventually asked to resign by a cowardly Bill Clinton who, in retrospect, might have paid more attention to Dr. Elders and spent less time inserting foreign objects into inappropriate places.
But no matter. The doctor who gave sound, clinical medical advice was fired, while the doctor who engaged in wild, graphic and unsubstantiated fantasies about gay sex will most likely assume the helm as "America's chief health educator." And you wonder why we have a health care crisis in this country.

Why doesnt Doctor James Holsinger pray to Jesus to cure Dick Cheney's daughter and daughter in law of lesbianism. Isnt Jesus supposed to grant miraculous powers to anyone who prays to him?
The Bible contains the lie, that anyone who prays to Jesus can cure the sick. Jesus said, "If you have the faith of a mustard seed" (now maybe Dr. Holsinger is a bad christian and doesnt even have that much faith). Why doesnt this christian pray for Dick Cheney's grandson, and save little Sammy Cheney from having to grow up with a lesbian for a mom and another lesbian for a dad. Why dont you pray, Christian?

What a shock! Liberals upset that someone who doesn't support their efforts to make perversion normal may be in a position of authority.
If we could just get every lib to go queer, we could clean up the country in as little as one generation. AIDs would get most and then the rest would slink back into the closet

What is it about Xters these days needing confirmation that their faith gives them license to spend half their lives dreaming up sick fantasies about the sex lives of total strangers? And to berate others who fail to share their ignorance and bigotry? Speaking of "shoving your lifestyle in my face."
BTW, I wonder how many of Freiheit's little Jesus bunny girlfriends back in the Eighties believed all James Dobson's lies about the uselessness of condoms and wound up pregnant--or (news flash to heteros!) with AIDS themselves.

I'll tell you another organ that's not "anatomically designed to receive the penis": a woman's throat. Remember, breeder boys: every time that sweet thing gives you a hummer, Jesus weeps.
P.S. I'm straight/married, but I do have friends who are gay, and I don't feel like I have any reason or right to judge whether or not their private sexual lives are "normal"--anymore than I wonder whether my straight friends are into leather. These are human beings, not beings-who-have-sex, and I think it's dehumanizing to focus on that one dimension out of a million.

there is nothing unnatural about homosexuality. it has been practiced in every culture and by every animal.
Posted by johannesrolf at 06/07/2007 @ 07:04am
Freiheit, Ever thought about the fact, that homosexuals get the heterosexual livestyle shoved in THEIR faces on a minutely basis, in virtually every situation they are entering? That, just because they are a part of a minority group, their sexual orientation is 'on the table' much quicker and much more easy? That they very often are 'homosexuals' first and AFTER THAT human beings? That they have to justify and explain their oriantation in numerous ways and more often than any heterosexual can imagine? That because of that, your problem with them 'shoving their attitude in your face' actually is a direct result of your (and the mainstream's) treatment of them, i.e. not treating them as completely normal citizens with equal rights and responsibilities but constantly reducing them to their sexual orientation and shoving them in their minority corner??? Please, think about that! ...and talking about your handle: The best thing anyone has ever said about 'freedom', was the following quote of Rosa Luxemburg: "Freedom always is the freedom of the one who thinks or is different". It's really, really sad, that US politics, media and mainstream has such a twisted, limited and exclusive understanding of that basic democratic value...

In the spirit of correct doctrine:
What is it about "christian" conservative males -- who loudly claim to fuck their brow-beaten wives missionary style within the covenant of marriage -- these days needing confirmation that their behavior is okay and accepted by everyone? I will never think conservaLoser sex is natural. It isn't in my opinion. But if you have desire to engage in it, go for it, a copy of How Jesus Treated Women jammed into the orifice and all! What you do in private is your business and a conervaLoser's business is to make private profit off of public entities like governments and invasions.

I bet he thinks that smoking is good for you and that the Doctors and HMO's are charging fair and reasonable prices. And if confirmed will probably set us back on those issues. But all in all the Surgon General is not really a position that makes policy, they are usually there to be a puppet for the administration and this nut would not be in the position for very long. The next president will be able to replace him before the troops get on the plane to come home. Heck a good short term replacement for the guy could be a monkey (hopefully one who masterbates instead of practicing gay sex). Just a thought.

Ok old man, care to explain what's so "natural" about homosexuality?
Also, your "every animal" remark is too broad. Homosexual behavior has only been witnessed in a few mammalian species (outside of humans) and a hand full of bird species. Now, had you said "incest" is practice in every culture and in every animal, then you would be correct in that assessment.

I don't know who you are, MadDog13, but I love you! I can't tell you how many times I've said some version of this this to some homophobic prick that's trying to make the life of one of my gay, male friends miserable.
Let's be honest guys. If the Supreme Court hadn't overturned Texas' sodomy law, many of you menfolk would be crying in the streets because your girl told you, "I can't do that. It's against the law" when you asked for a blow job.
As for this latest Bush nominee, I'm not surprised. I live among staunch religious conservatives and I can tell you, there is no group more obsessed with homosexuality, and most importantly homosexual sex, than religious conservatives.
I'm thinking that's because so many of them are in closets to die for.
I've always been a live and let live kind of person. If someone is gay, straight, transgendered, or bisexual, that's their business. That's between themselves and their God. I have no say in it, nor should I. I love my friends for who they are, not for who they sleep with. Just so it doesn't involve doing things with animals that God did not intend, we're cool. (the thought of my cats being intimate with someone other than another cat just gives me the willies.)
I think that everyone who does take a minute to judge their fellow man for stuff that's none of their business needs to pull out their Bible and look up a verse that many conservatives seem to have forgotten about: "Judge not, lest ye be judged." I'm not sure where in the Bible that verse is, but it's one I've always remembered and lived my life by.
Now to me, there's just certain jobs where you should leave your religious beliefs at the door, except for the ones that include compassion. Attorney general is one. Surgeon General is another. For someone who has an illness, or for a health crisis, whether or not you believe that this is a Biblical plague brought down to cleanse the world of sin is totally irrelevant to the situation. In fact, getting in front of a live microphone and expressing these views will just add another layer of chaos to a situation that in no way needs it.
Hopefully, Congress will take that factor into consideration when it comes time for this guy to be confirmed.
Besides, anyone whose fantasies include scissors in places where nothing sharp should be is far too off the beam to be anywhere near the decision making process when it comes to this nation's healthcare policy.

No, in my viewpoint homosexuality is not genetic. I don't believe one is "born" into that type of behavior. I think neurological wires gets crossed once the onset of puberty starts. Perhaps it has more to do with chemical deficiencies...both internal and external.

Ed, hope will help you better understand who the judgement statement should be used...
"Matt 7:2-5 "For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged [if we judge with an evil heart or dark intent, His judgment of us will reflect it; if we judge nobly and honestly, His judgment of us will reflect that, too], and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you [if we use extremes or exaggerations or other unfair means, our judgment will reflect it]. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye [point out his sins, "minor" in Jesus' example here] and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye [our own sins, even and especially those we will not admit, magnified by our selective blindness]? How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' [tell him of his "minor" sins] when all the time there is a plank in your own eye [that there are greater or the same sins in our own lives which we do nothing about or think we are above]? You hypocrite* [pointing out the sins of others while by pretense we think of ourselves as above sin], first take the plank out of your own eye [sincerely ask the Lord for forgiveness and learn and live the Truth and Light by His Word], and then you will see clearly [be in a righteous position] to remove the speck from your brother's eye [to judge and to help him out of his bondage to sin]." At Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan, Jesus was talking to the multitudes gathered there after hearing of His message and of His healings to beseech them to not become like the pharisees and hypocrites who think they are above sin."

ED, you are million percent right. These conservaClwons endlessly ponder and emotively, obsessively pronounce on homosexual sex more than the most hormonally-enraged gay dude who has not gotten laid in far too long and who is all but inhaling any hardcore porno magazine he can get his sticky hands around.
Buy why?
Here is one asnwer form David Trimble's Nobel Prize acceptance speech:
Amos Oz also arrived at the same conclusion. Recently in a radio program he was asked to define a political fanatic. He dis so as follows, "A political fanatic", he said, "is someone who is more interested in you than in himself". At first that might seem as an altruist but look closer and you will see the terrorist. A political fanatic is not someone who wants to perfect himself. No, he wants to perfect you. He wants to perfect you personally, to perfect you politically, to perfect you religiously, or racially, or geographically. He wants you to change your mind, your government, your borders.

JOHANNES,
With all these gay animals prancing about and swishing aroud -- probably toe-tapping to the Village People as they do so -- we can see why it is necessary to bake the planet by another 5 or 6 centigrade: We must permit God's angry message to reach fudge-packing birds and salamanders.
Does the logic seem a little off? Not to the sick and evil likes of Jerry FarFailure and his apologists. One may read their heinous thoughts with one's jaw dropping as they convey their mixture of righteousness and glee at the 9/11 slaughter of innocent life as a key plank in their medieval "god's" platform.

"So, what is your view on homosexuals becoming parents, should it be encouraged? Should we support politicians who say it's "okay"?
Posted by MASK 06/07/2007 @ 1:27pm
My view on gay's being parents is limited in scope. I feel it would be ideal if a child or children were raised in a two-parent home where there is balance. I think it necessary for children to see how adult males and females interact with each other. Children have a different view when it comes to other children, but to understand what roles each parent plays is critical to their development into adults. Not to say it works all of the time, because it doesn't. Parents of today a totally selfish and very selfserving when it comes to their own offspring.
As far as encouraging them to parent, well, the point is moot if they got pregnant or impregnated the old fashioned way (without paying a sperm bank and not wanting to know who the father or mother is) and they're the biological parent.
Fostering and/or adopting is entirely different.
And, no, I will not support any candidate that endorses the gay lifestyle.
Posted by ACook at 06/07/2007 @ 2:02pm
there are gay high school students. you also seem to think that there are only male homosexuals.
they don't care if you accept them personally. it is society and this creep that we are talking about that is in their face. they are the last segment of society that many people, including you, look down upon and discriminate against.

Thanks for telling me where the verse is, ACook. I appreciate it.
Reading it also kind of makes my point, which is that since none of us are perfect, none of us has the right to judge anyone or to tell others how they should lead their lives.
Again, I think that instead of focusing so much on what folks do in their bedrooms, which is a private place, we should focus more on what folks do in their communities, which are public places.

now to the natural part. how can something be unnatural when it is practiced almost universally in nature?
Posted by johannesrolf at 06/07/2007 @ 5:18pm
Freiheit-Nature does provide ways to naturally control the population of all species and the Earth has way too many humans making homosexuality a natural form of population control by limiting procreation.Limiting procreation is just as natural as procreation as can be seen in the animal kingdom.
Posted by i'm nobody at 06/07/2007 @ 6:01pm
Freiheit-My too many humans comment is a statement of fact as was the statement that nature has built in population control.I don't care that I have no credibility with you since you can't dispute the facts and facts are all that matter. You desperately want to believe that homosexuality is unnatural in order to justify your bigotry so you ignore facts about nature. That's fine.Whatever you need to tell yourself.
Posted by i'm nobody at 06/07/2007 @ 6:56pm
Freiheit-Can you prove that nature,by itself, can feed 6 billion people? Are there that many buffalo and roots left?As far as nature is concerned there are too many people since nature is set up to provide for a limited population of all species and makes adjustments when it feels that any population is too large.

What a laugh...the liberal supporters of perversion all other themselves labelling anyone who doesn't support moral perversion as the ones with no credibility.
We don't endorse homosexual perversion anymore than we endorse adultery as a lifestyle choice or pedophelia, or murder.
Now people can legally (unfortunately) go around and engage in adultery without any legal consequence. So also they can engage in the equally morally bankrupt practice of homsexual sex. But that doesn't mean we who actually live normal lives have to accept their behavior.
It's no surprise that libs like Johannesrolf equate humans with every animal form. To them and most libs, that is all that people are, just another animal form. That is the first key step in downplaying and even legitimizing degenerate behavior.

ANTILIBERAL, thanks for your deep insights in your 7.30h post. You do realize, that about 65 years ago, the Nazi's built concentration camps and argued along the same lines as yourself to also slaughter off homosexuals in them. Your way of thinking is fascist to the core.
In fact, be glad that you're in the US (I assume). If this was a forum of an European magazine, I could get you in front of a legal court for your deeply discrimatory behaviour. And believe me, I would.
Luckily, unlike the US, the European Union is civlized enough to make an implicit equation homosexuals=adultrists=pedophiles=murders illegal and a reason for people to go to prison!

Article trivializes injuries caused by putting objects into the rectum. This is a real problem. I have heard of one case from my wife, who is an emergency room nurse. Patient came in complaining of pain in rectum. X-ray showed small hammer in rectum. Operation removed hammer, but rectum was not salvaged. Patient was discharged with colostomy bag.
I do not know whether injuries to the rectum because of foreign objects are common. Or, for that matter, whether penile insertion causes trauma.

Your comment displayed a typical lib inability (or unwillingness) to actually respond to the comments made.
I made not inference or direct suggestion regarding legal status of homosexuals. My comments were all in regards to moral behavior. As I noted, we do not take legal action against adulterers even though their actions are morally reprehensible.
Similarly, moral people can make comments on moral behavior that they find repugnant without it being translated into legal actions. That is part of our freedoms which you don't seem to comprehend in your European snobbery.

The health care crisis in this country is at least partly due to leftists, like Mr. Kim, who make light of the science on same-sex behavior.
The fact is that same-sex behavior is extremely unhealthy, like smoking. Homosexuals, primarily males, are disproportionately at risk for serious disease. For males, these diseases are HIV/AIDS (to which they're nine times more susceptible than straight males), Kaposi's Sarcoma, human papilloma virus, hepatitis A and B, anal cancer, non-hodgkins lymphoma, hodgkins disease, gonorrhea, syphilis, proctitis, proctocolitis, and enteritis. Prophylactics offer males mitigation of, but not complete protection from, these diseases. , , , , In comparison, lesbians are generally at lesser risk for disease but are still more prone than heterosexual women to some health concerns. Examples include breast cancer, ovarian cancer, HPV, BV, chlamydia, syphillis, trichomoniasis, and even AIDS/HIV. Of these diseases, HPV is at least as common in lesbians as in single heterosexual women, while BV is more so.
But disease is not the only risk associated with homosexual behavior. The others include physical damage for males and mental illness for both sexes. Among males, approximately 93% of homosexual activity involves anal receptive intercourse, which has a tendency to damage the voluntary and involuntary muscles surrounding the rectal area, including the lining of this area. Further, male homosexuals have a greater tendency to experience bowel control issues later in life. For both sexes, homosexuals have a greater tendency to experience mental and emotional disorders, such as major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, and substance abuse/ dependence.
Though the source of these disorders is not clear, social stigma is considered a possibility. Yet two studies appear to cast some doubt on this source. Showing no statistical significance, one study was inconclusive as to whether homosexuals early in life were more vulnerable to psychological morbidity caused by social stress. The other study showed that Dutch homosexuals were as likely to experience psychological morbidity as their American counterparts, even though the Dutch are either more tolerant of it or more likely to consider homosexuality an equal of heterosexuality.24
In either case, this elevated potential for psychological morbidity in homosexuals appears to contradict the position of the APA. Based on studies conducted in the late 1950's, showing little to no prevalence of psychological disorders among homosexuals, the APA de-listed homosexuality as a pathology in the early 1970's. Doing so, the APA turned from previous studies, suggesting that homosexuality was related to parental neglect.
Yet recent research suggests otherwise. In one paper, a researcher indicates that "…early experiences with childhood maltreatment may influence adult sexual orientation." In other words, more rigorous, modern day research suggests validity to earlier studies showing that parental neglect, primarily among fathers, heightened the potential for homosexuality. 24
So, unlike race or gender, homosexuality is not due solely to biological factors, nor is it a natural and fixed condition, over which individuals have no control. Instead, unlike these characteristics, homosexuality is a behavioral urge that is acted upon by choice, making it no different than any other human behavior. Further, like all other behaviors, the likelihood for it to occur is heightened through parental and societal influences - the cognitive and cultural factors mentioned by the American Psychological Association as two of the three reasons for homosexual behavior.
Unfortunately, due to an extreme bias that is devoid of science, Mr. Kim is a negative influence on the cultural factor.
