RedditHouse Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi ought to find a quiet place where she can sit down and recount the election. She was not chosen by her friends in Silicon Valley or by the friendly investment bankers on both coasts. They no doubt contributed generously to the party's candidates. But her House majority was made possible by millions of fed-up Americans ready to gamble that Democrats might try something new--on Iraq, on the soggy economy for working people and other grievances.
So why does Pelosi begin the education of her freshman members with a seminar on Rubinomics? Robert Rubin, the Citigroup executive and former Treasury secretary, will appear solo next week before the party caucus to explain the economy. Pelosi has scheduled another caucus briefing on Iraq, but that includes five expert voices of varying viewpoints. Rubin gets the stage to himself.
When labor officials heard about this, they asked to be included since they have very different ideas about what Democrats need to do in behalf of struggling workers and middle-class families. Pelosi decided against it. This session, her spokesman explains, is only about "fiscal responsibility," not globalization and trade, not the deterioration of wages and disappearing jobs. Yet those subjects are sure to come up for discussion. Rubin gets to preach his "free trade" dogma with no one present to rebut his facts and theories.
A fundamental debate is growing within the party around these economic issues and Pelosi knows this. It is seriously unwise for this new Speaker to leave an impression she has already chosen sides. The interpretation by Washington insiders will be: Pelosi is "safe;" she is not going to threaten Rubin's Wall Street orthodoxy. Far-flung voters will begin to conclude Democrats are the same-old, same-old money party. This is the sort of party "unity" that can earn Pelosi a very short honeymoon.

Most of us on the right knew that the far left posters here who constitute the majority of leftist bloggers on this site would quickly pounce on the Dems once the savor of the elections were over.
The daily moaning and groaning from the Nation writers and the hardcore leftist bloggers is sweetness to this conservative. The train seems to have derailed before it ever left the station.

I mean, six months ago you were describing the "Nation writers and hardcore leftist bloggers" as the core constituency of the Democratic Party which ensured they would remain a minority party until they became more like the righty-right wing of the Republican Party.
Any explanation yet of why the American people kicked your political dodo asses out of the US Congress? Other, that is, than your previous declaration right after the election that the American people are "evil"?

I don't expect the Democrats to get us out of Iraq anytime soon. Notice the anti-Bush war "liberals" here who suddenly became "finish the job" liberals when the Democrats won. One thing is certain, though. The occupation is doomed. The "centrists", however, will probably drag it out until it looks like the political rug is going to get pulled out from under them, too.

What else could she be when they are her lifeblood? The Democrats who got elected by the antiwar upsurge on their antiwar credentials are now being told by the DLC vultures, conspicuously waving a checkbook, that they must continually raise money if they hope to keep their seat.
The real acid test for Democrats is publicly financed elections of some kind. All they'll do is peck around the edges while emitting volumnious amounts of noise and gas.

I have decided, while the troops are in Iraq sweating, to give up a few comforts. AS LONG as our troops are stuck in Iraq, I will personally not eat any eclairs, bon bons, no dairy queen peanut buster parfait; NO frappucinos, NO cream puffs, NO exceptions.
The other day, I was at the mall, there in the food court I saw a right wing Republican Conservative - he had on a T-shirt that said Liberal = Terrorist AND a baseball hat that said Nancy Pelosi Hates Our Troops. So here is this Bush supporter, I could just picture his SUV with the two big ass flags on either antennae, yellow ribbons all over it.
Anyway, this anti-American George Bush supporter is seated in the food court, LITERALLY STUFFING himself with an eclair. Then he starts feeding his face with some chocolate whip cream filled things. Later I saw at the pastry stand nearby what they were, they were CREAM PUFFS - actual cream puffs - I heard the term before but I never knew what they were in real life. There is an actual pastry called a cream puff - whoa - they sure looked good. Pretty tasty looking, it made my mouth start watering - but then I remembered the anti-American Iraq war zealot eating them.
I saw the right-winger guy get up - oh I forgot to mention he had a plasma tv he just bought - big huge thing - on the table with him. So anyway he gets up and goes over to the Starbucks, and I followed him over there to see what he orders. Sure enough, its something right in line with the cream puffs and eclairs he`s been mass feeding himself with - he goes and orders a: double-tall-mocha-valencia-frappucino-with-whip-cream.
Whoa - hey man, our troops are in Iraq, in the 100 degree heat, carrying 100 pound backpacks, getting shot at over George Bushs lies.
As long as our troops are in Iraq, I WILL NOT EAT ANY: bon bons, eclairs, frappucinos, peanut buster parfaits, cream puffs, in fact nothing with whip cream AT ALL. When our troops come home, I`ll stuff my face with cream puffs just like the Conservative Republicans are doing right now, but until they do, its nothing but TOTAL SOLIDARITY for me.

No one is really surprised that the socially liberal wing of the one party that rules this nation still kowtows to its true masters, are they? After all, the two wings of the Plutocrat Party are just beholding to different sets of corporations and billionaires. The so-called liberal wing of the PP is generally more palatable but, it is simply the lesser of two evils. Most of the Dems who claim to be progressive are lino, liberals in name only. [Couldn't resist that, although it will undoubtedly arouse predictable comments.]
When one examines the political agendas of most political parties in functioning democracies, it becomes clear how profoundly shifted to the right the US political parties are. The US' "left" party would be the center in the political spectrum of almost any other nation.
Actual liberals must support the Dems, but should do so only for the purpose of buying time. For what? For forming a party with a real and stated liberal agenda that can actually offer the electorate a true choice. [I expect this sentence to produce a plethora of posts by the radical reactionaries' screeching that the US voters will never support such a party - just like they howled that the voters would support the GOP for the next decades.] It may be possible to transform the Dems, just as the rr's took the GOP away from the conservatives, but I would not depend on it. It is my suspicion that many liberals gave money to Dems, but gingerly, and with no commitment to the party itself. For example, some just could not bring themselves to give any support to Casey or Ford, Jr.
Perhaps the liberal organizations that were created in reaction to the present radical reactionary regime can get their act together, realize that unless there is a true alternative there will be no essential change, and start working on a true progressive choice. It is undoubtedly very difficult for rr's to understand how liberals can be so critical and negative about the Dems for they cannot see how far apart the two groups are.
Liberals have to support the Dems (which the Dems well know) to prevent the nation from becoming a fascist state and to have some protections of the rule of law. Support of the Dems is only a holding action, and progressives must continue with that policy until a real liberal party can be formed or the Dems transformed. Alas, given the independent and argumentative nature of most liberals, that may be a long time coming.
Perhaps the reason the rr's so vilify the Dems is the well-known psychological phenomenon where the greatest hatreds are between those who are almost the same rather than those who are radically different. That would explain a lot of the invective and unreasoned emphasis on the lesser issues that divide the parties and not recognition of the crucial one that unites them: obsequious allegiance to the plutocracy.

I don't think you find the same slavish adherence to party with the dems than with the repubs. the Bush rallies with their question and answer, or the convention thing with the flip flops and worse the bandaids did remind me a little of Triumph of the Will, or at least the Popeil slogan "set it and forget it." come to think about it, that sounds just like Bush's Iraq policy.

Well, Rubin was the Treasury Secretary under a successful Democratic President during an economic boom....and I'm sure Mr Greider doesn't want her to use any REPUBLICAN Treasury Secretaries....so that only leaves...
Werner Michael Blumenthal or George William Miller.
Now, history buffs...let's look at Blumenthal's economic records under Jimmy Carter....or the wonderful personality of Mr Miller and see what we get.

I have been telling the far right for quite some time that there are no differences (except maybe cosmetic ones) between Dems and Reps. It makes me wonder why any of you on the right fight so hard to win elections, especially through fear and smear campaigns. Regardless of who "wins" the end result will be extreme rightwing policies on both domestic and foreign policy. So you people should just sit back and relax. What Congressional Democrats really need to hear is that taxes have to be raised on CAPITAL, in order to close deficits and reform the AMT. Why should wages and salaries be taxed at higher rates than capital gains and dividends?
Conservative economists have sold us a bill of goods. There is only one kind of capital that actually "creates jobs," or increases productivity and that is money invested directly in physical plant, training, equipment, and research and development. Money in stocks (after the IPO) and trade in bonds are one to many steps removed from actually increasing jobs or productivity. They may maintain liquidity of capital, but liquidity is not such a problem that it should be given a preference. Therefore profits from them (stock capital gains, dividends, interest) should be taxed as least as highly as wages and salaries.
Further, money invested in any foreign operations may produce jobs somewhere else, but by doing so will usually subtract jobs, or production from the US. Therefore that kind of investment should be taxed at higher rates than ordinary income.
If Rubinomics prevails, then we'll continue on the path we're already traveling--toward what happened to Rome in 476, driven there by the rapacity of the monied class, and the bankruptcy of the state. See my website:Linked text [roman-empire-america-now.com]

Jeff is very upset with Detective Bill Zimmerman for doubting him. Mr. Zimerman insulted Agent Bellami and the agent has a temper unlike Mr. Fisher who is a pacifist. Jeff told me he lived just behind the Oakdale Mall. He said he used to ride a friends dirt bike, Honda and/or Kawasaki, in the hills before they made it into the mall. That was in the late 60's early 70's.
His name back then was Jeffrey Joseph Rogoff. Jeff had intentionally failed courses to conceal how bright he was. He actually got a grade of 25 in Geometry on his report card. He just didn't take any tests or do any homework. Everyone should email Pastor Craig Soaries at cesoaries@aol.com . The pastor met Jeff last Sunday prior to church. The pastor service talked about many things including all about the power of the Internet. One of the ushers was having a hissy fit because Jeff was calling overseas to his love of his life so she could hear everyone praising God the Father. The usher just doesn't understand that anyone can spread the word, not just the pastor. Jeff walked out of the church and called his friend Jeremy and talked about God for more than 30 minutes. His friend understands what Jeff represents. I can't' yet because I am Jewish but I know he is very special.
Jeff needs the pastor to make sure that all the people Jeff met at the recovery house stay put while he awaits the loan and the other lawsuit against Wesley Townsend Apartments (contact letter) to happen with Joel David Associates representing (email address to Joel David) Mr. Fisher who at the present moment is residing no longer on the streets of Buckhead, Atlanta because he is helping me until the newspapers and CNN start to report the truth. Dr. Greer lives not far from where Coretta Scott King used to live. God Bless her soul. The firm is just taking there sweet time. They have no idea how much money they can make. At least 100 million dollars could be the settlement. They want 37%. Jeff says that's usury so he offered them 44% instead and they still are not reacting. How arrogant can they get? The case is based upon a security officer throwing steaming hot coffee in Jeff's face which was captured on security cameras and many of the people in the complex know all about it.
The good thing is Jeff 7left for Florida this morning for Sarasota around seven7 to some protest about this past election. For some reason they loved to complain about things against Mark Foley but they never wanted him to lose any election. Anyone who stood up against AIPAC always got harmed in some way or another. Someone should contact Jean Elliott Brown from the 2002 election and find out what Mark Foley was holding over her in that race.
Jeff told me that she and her son told him on the phone in 2003 about some kind of blackmail he used against her close to the November 2002 General Election.
