Republicans Who Care (And Those Who Don't)

posted by Ari Berman on 10/18/2006 @ 11:46am

A group of venerable moderate Republican millionaires are starting a new group, Republicans Who Care. As Ellen Miller writes on TPM Cafe, "Does that mean that the rest of the Republicans are members of 'Republicans Who Don't Care'?"

And what precisely do the moderates care about? According to Bloomberg News, the group is raising money for "Republicans who favor balanced federal budgets and believe government should take a hands-off approach on such issues as abortion." The candidates they're planning to help include Senator Lincoln Chafee in Rhode Island and Reps. Chris Shays, Nancy Johnson, Rob Simmons, Martha Rainville and Deborah Pryce.

But do these candidates stand up on the aforementioned issues? Take abortion. Pryce had only a 40 percent rating from NARAL last year and is the fourth-ranking Republican in a GOP leadership that is adamantly pro-life.

The rest of the aforementioned Republicans voted for the Bush tax cuts that bloated the federal deficit.

And if Lincoln Chafee is re-elected to the Senate, he'll vote for Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, hardly a moderate.

It doesn't seem like the rich Republican "moderates" are getting too much bang for their buck.

Mr. Berman, are you in the second group?

  2. Speaking of Repuplicans who don't care, howzabout that Beauperez and the illegal use of criminal database info in the CO Gov race. They will stop at nothing it would seem. More corruption from the right in Colorado

That can't possibly be true, can it? Our incredibly intrusive homeland security databases are only there to protect us from terrorism, aren't they?

This is Kosspeak. Voting records don't matter. All that matters is who you support for majority leader. This lets any Dem, no matter how bad, off the hook because the Dems get to control the committees.

I'm not sure what good that does, because some Dems vote for Bush-sponsored legislation anyway. For all of their hyperventilating about "purity trolls" and single-issue activists, Kos and his buddies have no problem with being single-issue as long as that issue is power.

  6. Repubs waking upto where the voters are...the Middle.

  7. Moderate Republicans? You got to be kidding. One thing I do enjoy is watching that party tear into each other. The idea they will spend millions against each other is gratifying.
