Like the national security state, Media Consortium reporter Brian Beutler is tough to stop. Straight from his hospital bed (well, OK, he finished the interview before he was shot), comes this great interview with Russ Feingold about the new FISA bill.

If liberal Wisconsin demographics and political views were the same as the rest of the country, Feingold may have a point. It is doubtful that Feingold would be saying this if he were running for re-election this year from West Virginia!

Yawn.....Feingold loses. To bad you liberals can't think with your brains only run with your ideas. Hard to believe any of you have a job. Feingold just had to face the reality music sooner than the rest of you.
Democrat for McCain08.
Would love to be a fly on the wall when the DNC receives my response to their quest to "get behind Obama." I actually let them pay the postage. :-)

Umm I think they won't get a response. When Obama wins I would love to be a fly on the wall for your response, I highly doubt the DNC gives a damn about you though.

and as for the group of people who are actively working to stop the FISA bill underway - which includes libertarians and liberals both - my thanks goes to them because in this idiotic and silly time, where the most serious of issues are ignored by fools following the preznidential horse race, these people are actually trying to do something important and good

Sample entry:
'...Dear DNC, I have voted Democratic since I cast my first vote for George McGovern in 1972, and I am still proud of that vote! However, 2008 is a different circumstance. Since Chairman Dean and the Rules and Bylaws of the Democratic Party stole votes from Senator Clinton, and gave them to candidate Obama. I will not, and cannot vote for Barack Obama because of the totally disrespectful treatment of Senator Clinton by the DNC, and the news media, not to mention the distortion of her views by Mr. Obama. Since Mr. Obama apparently has no intention of selecting Senator Clinton as his running mate, I will write in the name of Hillary Clinton for President on my Ohio ballot which is permitted in the State of Ohio. Hillary Clinton is the very BEST candidate prepared for the Presidency on day one, no on the job training, which Mr. Obama will require, much like the current President....' -- Jack McIntyre Jr, Ohio -- #175

Well, that sentence will go on my "dumbest things ever to be thought" list. It's getting to be a long list.

"coprolite"
Good one!

I know you can all go read the interview, but I am taken by this passage:
Sen. Feingold-"Now, the truth is that we could simply extend the bill for a year, sunset it. We could extend the orders. But as you get closer to these deadlines, the administration uses these intimidation tactics, and far too many Democrats fall for it. They think that somehow the administration's gonna win this argument. I don't think that's true. I think the Democrats did great the last few months when the House stood up to them. But there is this sort of inertia -- if that's the right word -- that leads to ultimately the caving of very large numbers of Democrats, even voting for an awful piece of legislation like this. That's the only way I know how to describe it. I don't know, the day-to-day pressure; it's like this constantly pulsating fear of being accused of being soft on terrorism."
RF: I think you show people that those who stand firm on this do just fine politically. I like to think of myself as an example of that. There are many people like that. The truth is that if you properly articulate that you want to balance national security and make sure we protect civil liberties at the same time. And take the time to go through the arguments -- which are very frankly easy to win -- these are not hard arguments. When anybody really listens to it, they just kinda shake their head. Then you can prevail and show people that you don't need to buckle at the knees on this. But it requires a little patience. It requires a little faith in peoples' willingness to listen. And that's how in the long run you prevail. And I'm hoping that a lot of people who run this time, unlike a lot of people who ran in 2006, are held accountable.
