Satanic Verses: For This, They Want to Kill Him?

posted by Jeff Kisseloff on 02/26/2009 @ 12:52pm

In her column in the March 9 edition of The Nation magazine, Katha Pollitt sardonically celebrates the twentieth anniversary of the fatwa issued against Salman Rushdie for his satirical treatment of the prophet Mohammed in his novel, The Satanic Verses.

I thought I'd join in the festivities by offering up our original review of the book by the late John Leonard, who wrote it shortly after, as he put it, "the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, with Rocks in his Dome, took out a $5.2 million contract on the novelist."

Read Leonard's review here.

  1. It is truly ironic that the Nation would run a piece defending Salman Rushdie in the very same issue that condemns Sean Delonas's chimp cartoon for being offensive. The same piece cites Katha Pollitt, who, by her own admission, owes her hiring at the Nation to the imbroglio caused by Carlin Romano's review of Catherine MacKinnon's "Only Words".
