Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama appears Sunday morning on ABC's "This Week.
Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden appears on NBC's "Meet the Press."
Republican presidential nominee John McCain appears on CBS' "Face the Nation."
And Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin appears to be in hiding.
Though she is surely newsworthy -- her face is on the covers of the new editions of People, US Weekly, OK! and Time -- Palin's people have turned down all invites as part of a broad initiative to isolate the Alaskan governor from the sort of scrutiny that national candidates typically face.
Apparently, the Republicans who just nominated Palin for the vice presidency do not believe their newly-minted candidate is quite ready for prime-time.
A question then: If Sarah Palin is not skilled enough, experienced enough or tough enough to face a few questions from America's hyper-cautious and complacent media on a Sunday morning, what is it exactly that makes the Republicans think she has what it takes to assume the presidency at a moment's notice?

Happy-You do come up with some funny stuff.Of course, you know that Fox,like MSNBC, is, hardly, fair and balanced and you know that your candidate is hiding because she doesn't know anything beyond Alaska which makes your mindless support of this unknown even more insane

Happy-Yes,Happy.Fox news is fair and balanced just like Olberman is fair and balanced and no one is whining.Just pointing out that you guys became instantly energized by an unknown person who, now, has to be taught that there is a world outside of Alaska.Tell us,again how she is experienced enough to run a world power? You may now mention Obama rather than answer the question.

Happy-You don't have a powerful and magical weapon. You have someone who is hiding because they can't answer questions on any subject that does not pertain to Alaska, but you knew that and are making things up in order to make it seem that you guys aren't as mindless as you are.

Obama blew off Fox News because of the sleazy (and frequently counter-factual) way they have reported on him. I can recall no other media outlet to which he refused to make himself available. (And, of course, he just did an interview with O'Reilly.)
Governor Palin, on the other hand, is being hidden from the media almost entirely, although some here seem to think that she will eventually agree to be interviewed by Fox.
I'm open to hearing why these two scenarios should be compared.
Posted by drhammer at 09/07/2008 @ 12:12am

All ideologies to the side... let's be fair.
McCain's in this to win, which means that he's still considering what kind of nails to buy for the new Republican platform that he's building... from scratch.
He just picked Palin last week... who's... very experienced provincially... a lightening rod for the base... new to the ticket... smart... a great speaker...
...and... she arrives at America's 'national scene' door with an assortment of 'checkout' baggage that seems mismatched somehow... a working knowledge of world affairs that seems 'sketchy' at best... no previous experience with McCain... and is more than willing to slander her opponents in front of millions of viewers...
...but most of all... she needs to be thoroughly briefed.
Why so impatient? Are you scared?;^p

Look for Palin to break with orthodoxy in the Biden debate by showing up in camo & after drawing back a curtain on the stage, begin to field dress a moose as the moderator poses questions. If tried with a particularly tough one, she can stoop to her task & feign preoccupation, knife flashing in the studio glare, the chuck piling up, making everyone else look like do-nothing suited desk jockies. The word will get around to "stay away from 'ol Sarah when she's workin', the pundits will declare her the winner "on substance". Some will say she got down to the '''red meat" of the questioning & with the scent of Alaskan spruce BBQ smoke in the air, all that's needed will be the mirrors.
Posted by Sorelish at 09/07/2008 @ 01:15am
She needs to be on "Meet the Press" the week after she is picked?
She will be bombarded with the "experience" questions. Obama will not.
She will probably get ambushed, like Bush in 2000, asked to name the rulers of a few obscure third world s--t holes. Obama, of course, will not.
She will be asked why she is abandoning her kids in their time of need. A question that is never asked of a male candidate.
So, I'm willing to give her a few weeks to get up to speed on national issues.

"Palin got more votes in (Wasilla) AK than Joe got in the primary"
patently false .... Biden got more vote in Iowa alone than moose-momma did in Wasilla
"Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee got a big laugh from the crowd at tonight's convention when he said that as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin outpolled her Democratic counterpart, Joseph Biden.
"She got more votes running for mayor of the town of Alaska than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States," Huckabee declared, sparking applause.
There's just one problem with Huckabee's statement: it's not true. Biden collected a total of 63,157 votes during the Democratic primaries and caucuses this year. By contrast, Wasilla boasts a population of 9,780."

C'mon, folks, give the gal a break.
It took the divine Sarah 6 years & 5 colleges to get one bachelor's degree in communications.
Communications.
After all that long hard study, you don't expect her to start communicating with the press right off the bat, do you?
That's unreasonable.
Besides, she needs all the time she can get (especially in view of those 6 years earning a single degree), to get herself up to speed for her debate with Biden, what with all her photo ops, autograph signings, parental duties, legal investigations.
And now less than 4 weeks to debate time.

"There was a lot of flack from the black posters here calling me a racist for pointing out Obama's base"
Actually you were called a racist because: you referred to a 46 year-old black man as a "boy", you told a racist robot joke, you actually referred to Obama as "shuffling" somewhere, etc.
"I warned everyone who could pay attention that John McCain would be a formidable opponent and that Hillary was the only one who could beat him, maimly because of the female vote."
And you were wrong then. Clinton had no advantage over Obama against McCain in the head-to-head polls that came out at the time.
"So, I'm willing to give her a few weeks to get up to speed on national issues.

Pontificus al-Tikriti, spokesman for Hubris Motors, sponsor of this months FOX interview with Sarah (my family values are off limits) Palin has released the list of hard hitting questions that will be asked of her;
1: What is it about George Bush that you love the most?
2: What part of the Iraq war has been the most successful?
3: When would you open ANWR to drilling?
4: What do you put on your mooseburger?
5: What do you use to cut the windpipe out of a moose?
6: What Bush tax cuts would you keep in place? (don't worry about why, just which ones)
7: Who is the current president of the United States?
8: Moving to international affairs, where is Great Britain?
9: Talk to us a little about the successes of abstinence only education?
(What? Can't ask her about that? OK, Sarah, my apologies, I guess the lefty that runs FOX does not want to hear about the success of abstinence only education and the benefits to our young daughters)
10: Why do you think asking US citizens to save energy will kill our economy?
11: When you heard about Saddam Husseins wmd programs being dismantled by George Bush, were you convinced the link between Al Qaida and Saddam had been severed, and how proud are you of George Bush's accomplishment in removing the threat of 20,000 liters of Anthrax from the hands of Ubama bin Laden....oops, did I say Ubama...of course I meant Usama. Sorry.
12: Talk to us about the stress of commanding the AK NAtional Guard and how you handled it while fighting off the lobbyists for the Road to nowhere.

3: She knows jack shit about anything related to the job of Vice President

oh no ponty. sarah palin is a long time member of a church, a major and inextricable aspect of who's theology include...
1. enthusiastic, belief in and specific hope for the destruction and damnation of all us non christofascist heathens who dont share their angry, anachronistic, bassackwards set of cultish beliefs...
2. belief in a creation myth that denies most of the findings of modern science as expounded for the last century and a half - AND wants such religion specific myths taught in all our public schools...
3. is opposed to anything other than abstinance only sex ed in our public schools and opposed to the genital warts vaccine (ie would rather their own daughters get genital warts and possibly cervical cancer than admit to a little reality)...
sara palins entire religious orientation is hate filled, anti-science, regressive, exclusionary, cultish, disrespectful of anybody elses beliefs, and consistantly attempts to insinuate itself into government in order to use such to coercively proselytize their dangerous, backwards cultish beliefs on everybody else...

in 2003 i remember walking through a local mall and seeing rightwing screeds prominantly displayed in bookstores calling me a treasonous traitor because...
I WAS CORRECT ABOUT MY DEEP RESERVATIONS CONCERNING OUR IRAQ POLICY as well as whatever other set of beliefs that conflicted with the christofascist/satano-aynrando coup that had taken over my country...
hate? didn't start here. i'm just reacting to the hate of others and am disgusted with the stupidity of the worst haters of the right and their bassackwards legions of braindead marching morons.
you see...when people threaten me, wish violence on me, and have some power...
i recognize such and fight back - and being nice to evil is only acceptable when doing so buys one enough time to
a) prepare one's own defence in order to secure one's self so that on can...
b) work for the destruction/neutralization of those who threaten one...
simple, really...

"Ponti-You claim that the war in Iraq is over and we won.You need to go and tell the families of the troops that recently died in Iraq that their kids aren't dead because the war is over and we won."
Yes, for those whose husbands, sons, and daughters were killed, the war will never be over. That's a valid point. But soldiers are killed in every war. That's why they call it war. This is not to diminish the sacrifice of those who gave their lives to defend this country, they're better than the whole lot of people on the left.

Oh, so you do agree that it did happen, and, presumably, that one might fear that it could happen again. Good. Very good! We're making progress.
Now, I presume the answer to your question is, that the reason why we were attacked is because America does not apologize enough to the rest of the world for its existence. Is this where we're going?

here is where you and i come close to anagreement, PONTY. i firmly disagree with many of my honorable progressive lefty co partisans.
i think they do minimize the threat of islamo-fascism in reaction to the foolish, incompetant, and cynical use of such a threat by the worst of the rightwing.
their impetus toward fairness and toleration, laudable as it is and exacerbated by opposition to your christofascist, satano-aynrando heros, leads them to fail to realize the true intentions of a large segment of the true believing islamic world toward the kufar heathen modern post enlightenment world.
my problem with the past 8 years of rightwing response to this very real threat revolves around the following...
1. many who oppose islamo-fascism are indeed christo-fascists...
2. the fight agaisnt islamic extremism has been incompetantly and wrong headedly prosecuted and has thereby done more harm than good, and
3. the same fight has been used as a weapon against domestic ideological political opponants (like librool demoncrats and all non rightwingers) in a domestic culture war that threatens our democratic, pluralistic, enlightenment society as much as violent islamofascist fantasies of world caliphate and forced conversion of us kufar infidels...

In a 2007 survey titled Muslim Americans: Middle Class and Mostly Mainstream, the Pew Research Center found Muslim Americans to be:
"largely assimilated, happy with their lives, and moderate with respect to many of the issues that have divided Muslims and Westerners around the world.
47% of respondents said they considered themselves Muslims first and Americans second. However, this was compared to 81% of British Muslims and 69% of German Muslims, when asked the equivalent question. A similar disparity exists in income, the percentage of American Muslims living in poverty is 2% higher than the general population, compared to an 18% disparity for French Muslims and 29% difference for Spanish Muslims.

i'm not denying the efficacy of jobs and justice, but neither am i denying the reality of the existance of millions of intolerant muslims here and abroad at least as hardcore as christofascists in their intolerance of others and other lifestyles.
would a job and justice (as defined by anyone other than a co-religionist of his) have stopped osama bin laden from doing what he did? do jobs, justice, and shopping malls blunt the fanaticism of the legions of marching morons of the christofascist right in this country? many of the worst cultish fanatics here seem to be doing right well for themselves financially, have good jobs and plenty of disposable income to go blow at malls and big box stores around our great imperial republic.
yet they still fantasize about the death and destruction of us heathens and still work tirelessly for their orwellian version of justice and decency (ie - injustice and opression).
words have meaning and wicked violence prone beliefs are not always blunted by a comfortable standard of living.

Locke denies toleration to those who entertain opinions contrary to those moral rules necessary for the preservation of society; as for instance, that faith is not to be kept with those of another persuasion, … that dominion is founded in grace, or who will not own & teach the duty of tolerating all men in matters of religion, or who deny the existence of a god (it was a great thing to go so far--as he himself says of the parliament who framed the act of toleration … He says 'neither Pagan nor Mahomedan nor Jew ought to be excluded from the civil rights of the Commonwealth because of his religion.' Shall we suffer a Pagan to deal with us and not suffer him to pray to his god? Why have Christians been distinguished above all people who have ever lived, for persecutions? Is it because it is the genius of their religion? No, it's genius is the reverse. It is the refusing toleration to those of a different opinion which has produced all the bustles and wars on account of religion. It was the misfortune of mankind that during the darker centuries the Christian priests following their ambition and avarice combining with the magistrate to divide the spoils of the people, could establish the notion that schismatics might be ousted of their possessions & destroyed. This notion we have not yet cleared ourselves from.

The content of The Nation's various blogs today gives testimony to the profound vulnerability the Obama/Biden ticket as events progress. Everything but everything here is about McCain/Palin, and of that, mostly Palin. And the reason, the shameless backing and filling on the progressive positions Obama took during the primaries. Today, the "surge", anathema to any legitimate war critic and an absolute disaster by any measure is now reported to have "succeeded beyond our wildest dreams". Talk about Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, I mean why not concede the election to McCain right now and be done with it? Together with the flip-flops on FISA, campaign finance reform, NAFTA, among others, this new reversal on the "surge" nauseates. The man's word is now less reliable than is that of George Bush. Here's a url that sums up the "surging" Obama:

sure, frosty...any religion can indeed be twisted to nefarious ends and indeed certain psychological types will always be attracted to the ugliest, most chauvinist forms of faith, but....
i've read a lot of religious texts, researched all sorts of belief systems, and i tell you i have found certain elements which make certain religions far more dangerous to non-believers than others, and islam is the worst.
islam not only creates a de-facto double bind as in literalist christianity where a set of faithful must struggle against a world which does not necesarily accept the draconianly dire consequences of failure to accept its dogma, but in fact actually spells out an apocalyptic pogrom against all other faiths or non-faiths, specifies how such kufar are to be conquered, enslaved, and coerced into conversion, exhorts its followers to resist any and all laws and systems other than its own (sharia), and even specifically encourages its followers to lie and hide their true desires to non-believers in order to survive until they are powerful enough to stop pretending and enforce their beliefs de jure, by violence if necesary.

these dudes AREN'T muslims:
The two Handsworth Riots occurred in the Handsworth suburb of Birmingham, England, during the summers of 1981 and 1985. The riots were allegedly caused by heavy-handed policing and drug-related problems in the suburb, fueled by a nationwide wave of uprisings in the wake of the April 1981 Brixton riot. Other sources claimed that the local Black British felt aggrieved at the increase in Asian owned businesses that were prospering in the area. Violent racism existed in the city from both cultures. It has been argued that the riots really arose from poor social conditions, racial discrimination, poverty, unemployment and dilapidated housing. Since then much has been done to improve the local amenities and housing conditions.
nor are these:
The Los Angeles riots of 1992, also known as the Rodney King uprising or the Rodney King riots, were sparked on April 29, 1992 when a jury acquitted four police officers accused in the videotaped beating of black motorist Rodney King following a high-speed pursuit. Thousands of people in the Los Angeles area rioted over the six days following the verdict. Widespread looting, assault, arson, and murder occurred, and property damages totaled one billion dollars. Many of the crimes were gang-motivated or perpetrated. In all, 53 people died during the riots.

greenland mosque in birmingham, england, claims to be a moderate, tolerant representation of islam in britain, and is frequented by a wide variety of middle and upper class british muslims, yet as "dispatches", a solid investigative british news show proved by the presence of its hidden cameras and mikes carried by courageous journalists...
it preaches
1. that gays should be brutally murdered 2. that women are inferior to men 3. that liberal western secular democracy is an abomination 4. that good muslims should follow the laws of the land and pretend to be loyal citizens until they are strong enough to overthrow the government and enforce their own theocracy onto the kufar, by violence if needed...
as well as a plethora of other notions diametrically opposed to our enlightened, secular ideas of justice and decency.

As for Palin ... aside from being a politically corrupt (or at best "questionable") religious extremist ... McSame would be the oldest 1st term POTUS ever and while he is in "good shape for a 72 year old" he has had issues that should concern Americans about the potential of a POTUS Palin succession. Regardless of your opinion it is a valid concern to myself and many Americans.

Sorry Happy, but you got it wrong. Carter's order required all 18-26 year olds born after 1/1/1960 to register. Obama would've been required to register at the end of July 1980, a few weeks after Carter issued the proclamation.

Which is the thrust of what he said. It was when he needed to register that he considered joining the military.
And no, I don't think Obama walks on water--but you clearly think YOU do.

But you try and tell the young people of today that... and they won't believe ya'."

Why LibZ & 2Hap, you say "voting liberal" like its a bad thing? Look, simple reality check here. The majority of the country think we are on the wrong track and McSame's voting record tells us volumes about his allegiance to the current political navigation. Has little to do with "conservative" or "liberal" except by cooincidence (which seems to be working against you BTW)
Look, LibZ I don't think the beer is working, try the thorazine.

I get it, I get it. Obama: "I'm my brother and sister's keeper". McCain: "screw you". Evangelicals belong to the "screw you" party. McCain, has just doubled down on George Bush. Why is he claiming the mantel of change? Maverick? He isn't refusing to brand his cows he is just hiding the brand on their tails.

Yep, in a multi sided attack...
first we ran for 16 years on Family Values...
then we surrounded our candidate with her family...
then our candidate appeared in People Magazine talking about her family...
tell us, oh wise one, what is it about Palins policy on health care that excites you the most?
Or maybe you could point me to her webpage where I could find a statement on the recent troubles in Georgia?
Or maybe it will be her ability to work with a democratic congress that gets you all giggly inside?
Or maybe her experience balancing her municipal budget....no wait... that won't work.
a hoot, you are....
Posted by crabwalk at 09/07/2008 @ 4:56pm
librulfreaks-I see that you are uninformed.Liberals did not open any can of worms that pertain to looking at a candidates family.Jefferson Davis(Palin) opened up that can of worms when she ran as a family values candidate and invited the world to come in and look at her family.

Lachatte, why he's being entirely honest.... if elected will Cindy will change the WH decor to something really garish, John will change his Depends, and Palin will change the Constitution and get rid of that pesky division between Church and State.
Is that enuff change?

"And also to get up to speed on what a Vice-President actually does. Posted by brunowe at 09/07/2008 @ 02:21am | ignore this person | warn this person"
Now, brunowe, we already covered this over on Pollitt's blog. What the vice president does, is up to the president. If I were being considered, I would sure want to find out what McCain has in mind for me.
"Yeah, that was before anyone had any real idea of how stupid W really is. To think, they actually tried to ambush him with trick questions. That's like having CC Sabathia pitch against my 6 yr old nephew's tee ball team." Posted by koroviev at 09/07/2008
Stupid or not, (and have you noticed how every Repub prez since Nixon has been variously characterized by the Left as bumbling, incompetent, or dumb? If they are, then how in the world have they won 5 of the last 7 elections?) we know that Obama won't be subjected to any "trick questions". Unscripted moments ("I'm in Kansas City.... no wait, St. Louis.") will be kept to a minimum, and underreported (relative to W) when they occur.

Except that there are precedents for what the Vice-President has done the last couple of administrations. She seems to have been off on those too.

LibZ ..
In the spirit of reaching across the aisle, I will donate my prize to LibZ!
There LibZ, don't say I never gave you anything!
make sure when you go hunting with Dickrod and Sarah to wear that brown cardigan and Bullwinkle hat ... I hear they like that sort of thing.

*gasp* Osama bin Laden's half-brother lives in Kenya? Quick Libz, you gotta pass this intel on to the DHS!
If you mean OBAMA's half-brother, I believe the lead in on those stories starts "long lost" which kinda defines the family gap dontcha think. In the same breath can you answer why Cindy McCain, Mrs Rich Beer-bitch, claims that she is an "only child" when she too has half-siblings?
Now wipe the spittle off, and remember .. both hands on the keyboard LibZ!
