Hungry for Change

posted by Peter Rothberg on 07/13/2009 @ 12:03pm

With a nod to the wonderful Nation magazine feature conceived by Walter Mosley, here's a list of ten simple things you can do to help change our food system for the better, drawn largely from the Hungry for Change campaign.

1. Stop drinking soda.
(Great way to lose weight too.)
2. Eat at home more than you eat out.
(Save money; eat healthier.)
3. Support the passage of laws requiring chain restaurants to post calorie information on menus and menu boards. (Knowledge is power.)
4. Help get schools to stop selling junk food. (Our tastes start young.)
5. Go without meat at least one day each week -- Meatless Mondays? (Single best way to help the environment is to become a vegetarian.)
6. Buy organic and/or sustainable foods without pesticides. (Chemicals kill.)
7. Support family farms by shopping at farmer's markets and CSAs. (Take market share away from the corporate sector.)
8. Know where your food comes from. Read labels! (Knowledge is power #2.)
9. Tell Congress that food safety is critical. (Regulations need to be expanded.)
10. Demand job protections for workers along each point of the food processing chain. (Labor rights are a critical part of food safety.)

I know I've missed lots of stuff. Add your own ideas in the comments field below.

"2. Eat at home more than you eat out. (Save money; eat healthier.)"

    Obviously true but...

given our service economy, if done on a massive scale (as you'd need to effect "change")...

wouldn't that unemploy an awful lot of food servers, hosts/hostesses, cooks, and dishwashers?

How is the single best way to help the enviroment becomming a vegetarian? That seems a bit overstated and lacking nuance. If most of meat is comming from feed lots, packed with hormones and using GM corn, I could agree. But I can avoid those thing with out sacrificing my happiness and becoming a vegetarian.

I think ol' PETER is dipping a bit into the "We vegetarians are more moral than you carnivores" trough.

As relates to "the environment", as much as urban liberals and anti-hunting advocates desire, by NOT hunting deer, we're looking at a massive population spike and places like New Jersey offering incentives to get people to COME to NJ to cull the herds.

It may sound like NRA pap, but it's true. The environment is actually made WORSE (destroyed tree seedlings, farms ((even organic ones)) having crop losses, over-feeding to the detriment of other species) by NOT hunting deer.

And if you hunt them, you should eat them.

Posted by Mask at 07/13/2009 @ 12:35pm Maybe so. I stopped eating cows for a while in college because I hated the effects that grazing on public land had on the ecosystems. There are ways to choose the meat you eat. Being a vegatarian does not inherently benefit the environment. Large farms can use a ton of pesticides, over utilize water, etc. Just eating plants is not nessarily better.

The argument that eating animals is morally wrong, is just silly. Because as we all know if animals were not meant to be eaten they would not have been made out of meat. :D

  8. Any list that involves doing Ten things is suspect.

Sounds a bit like a "to do" list that smacks of "new age" help books. Yuk!

I imagine people jogging and riding bikes on pristine bike trails in their lycra spandex suities. Properly helmeted and equipped with a GPS system and an Emergency Survival Kit.

And then I wake up in a cold sweat. And reach for the warm bourbon and cigarettes that sit on my side table. Line myself out a fattie and snort.

Then lay back and realize that it was all just a bad dream...

Kind of curious on that, too, Larry. One by one-

Okay #10, I know you'd hate....after all, you got no problem with 9 year olds working in unsafe coal mines.

#3....PETER didn't say FEDERAL laws, so why would you have a problem with States passing such laws?

#4---No mention at all of legislation, State or Federal.

#9---Not sure on this one. You DID support earlier (pre-1938) Food Safety Acts, didn't you?

C'mon Bench! If we take a walk in the woods it shouldn't be like a ride at Disneyland should it? Where everything is all safe and secure.

We should be able to experience the feeling of being hunted and stalked. It is good for us to shed the hubris of our existence and identify with the very real prospect of being eaten, digested and turned to scat.

Makes one feel alive. The more mountain lions the better. As far as I am concerned.

That's all fine and dandy until it's a child, or your child, that is a victim of a death that is painful and gruesome.

Or they survive, mutilated for life.

I could care less about adults, or pets, let em eat all they want.

F the mountain lions and keep their numbers low.

It's called predator control, and it's worked just fine for many years.

Funny how you are concerned about the unlikely event that a child should be eaten by a wild animal.

And seemingly unconcerned about the very likely event that children are just now being eaten by a world out of control.

What sort of future would you rather leave the children?

it will only become more frequent in Calif. as humans explode in their territory and the lions population remains unchecked.

  24. Is the kind of "Change" missing from from our kids' pockets, from the WSJ:

    By JOHN D. MCKINNON

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. federal budget deficit broke through the $1 trillion mark in June, potentially complicating the Obama administration's efforts to revive the economy and enact its longer-term policy agenda.

The U.S. Treasury Department on Monday said the government's annual deficit reached almost $1.1 trillion by the end of June, a once-unthinkable level that could threaten any nascent economic recovery by undermining the dollar and driving up interest rates....

Great point! I assume most every state has a similar program and its an excellent way to supplement the diets of the homeless and poor while aiding the "feeding the hungy" charities that always need substative protein for those they serve and help!

By far, the most common causes of food poisoning has little to do with the food per-say, it has to do with improper preparation of said food - ie, leaving the tuna salad out too long. Eating stuff that has turned green that isn't normally green. Not washing your hands after using the bathroom. In other words, process.

School lunches in New Orleans are always white, starchy, full of meat and preservatives, and come with very little nutritional worth. No wonder Louisiana is ranked the least healthy state -- we program our kids from a young age to eat the equivalent of pure garbage every single day.

also, it's a false premise for vegetarians to say carnivores aren't as happy as they are b/c carnivores eat fast food burgers, etc. I eat meat, almost always at home, and it's usually chicken, less often lean steak or ground chuck, and even less often pork. Meat is not bad for you. Eating 1000 calorie fast-food meals that leave you hungry an hour later is bad for you, but the choices aren't limited to being a vegetarian or eating fast-food.

"the coyotes have brought themselves back.

They never left. Not a pinnacle predator like the wolf. $35 a winter pelt keeps them in check.

"and the bears are coming, too."

Bears are omnivores and tend not to be a threat to livestock .

Oklahoma will have it's first bear hunting season this year. 400 pound plus bears available to make into rugs.

    "just a matter of time."

When the first tagged and collared wolf pack was released in Idaho, the last one hit the ground just eight days later. Seems the Feds forgot the people who live there didn't want wolves in their backyard.

Even the governor supported shooting them on sight and said so publicly.

Hmmm...well, the status quo has a lot of real peopl and real JOBS involved with it.

Radical change has a lot of "We need to all eat soy and home-raised veggies...who cares actual impact on people's lives, it sounds cool" involved with it.

It's also kind of EASY to say "bring back the wolves", when you're living in downtown Toronto or Windsor and the nearest forestland is 100 miles away....near OTHER PEOPLE's houses and farms.

Until the pro wolf people have a majority of the resident's PERMISSION to release wolves in their backyard, they will just continue to use them for target practice and feeding the coyotes.

  65. explain to me what a soul is frosty

    Posted by urmygyro at 07/14/2009 @ 9:43pm

  66. The Soul is a trendy five-door "urban crossover vehicle" based on the Kia Rio. The styling, standard equipment, value price, and overall usefulness, all contribute to make the Soul very appealing, especially to the youth market.

    Hope that helps.
