Act Now!

Food, Inc.

posted by Peter Rothberg on 06/22/2009 @ 3:28pm

There are no seasons in the American supermarket. In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner explains what this means as he lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, the USDA and FDA.

Watch the film, spread the word, sign the petition to help ensure the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act, and check out the film's website for a range of suggestions on how to get involved in the fight against America's corporate controlled food industry.

  1. Can't wait to see the leftist lining up to wring chicken necks, dunk them in the boiling water to singe the feathers, pluck them, gut them, and learn where the joints are to cut them up and package for freezing!

Or, stun the steer w/.22 slug, mallet, stun gun, slit the throat bleeding them out, hang them by the hind legs, open them up and gut them, skin them, and saw them up and package for freezing!

Should be a real education to see them grow enough vegtables and blanch them, can them with the P.C.correct preservatives like salt, alum, vinegar etc. and find enough place to store them cooly for the winter! Start diggin those root cellars now!

Of course those of us know that leftists can tell the difference between the tractor and the cow....

the trouble is the leftists want to kill off everything to do with the tractor and save the cow.....:)

I have be eating organic for the most partand have had a garden for years....refined sugar is the real danger.

a good taste test is to compare garden grown broccoli with "store bought, even the color is different'...or try the comaprision test with raspberries...you will never go back.

So PETER, apparently, you've hit on a bipartisan issue that EVERYBODY can get behind...????

  9. Protein filled, low carb breakfast bars, fruits, brocolli for lunch with (diet) soda if you must, chicken and more veg's for dinner. Strike a nice balance between whats good for you someone like Darla's regimen.

And then, Gentlemen, (and Ladies) every so often go get yourself a steak: A big steak, from a once healthy cow. And enjoy every bite of it, without guilt. And when your finished, dedicate your meal to a health food nut.

    It'll do you some good.

  12. i think the *most* important thing is having food which:

    a) is close to you (geographically-speaking); and

    b) which is seasonal.

obviously, if you can grow your own food, it'll be organic. but if you can't grow your own food, and buying organic isn't an option, then try the farmer's markets for non-organic.

and least it will be local/seasonal, and fresh.

Life-long health nut. Grow my own as much as possible.

Even the Bible notes the good food that G-d gives mankind. Psalm 104:14,15

<He causes the grass to grow for the cattle,

And vegetation for the service of man,

That he may bring forth food from the earth,

15 And wine that makes glad the heart of man,

Oil to make his face shine,

And bread which strengthens man's heart.>

If you have wine, bread, and good olive oil, and the veggies, it's a winning combination.

  14. My wife and I gardens that produce more veggies than the family can eat. I bring in the balance of veggies to work and give it to my fellow employees. I figure, I'm sticking it to the man, helping my fellow workers out, and eating better all at the same time!

a Double Combo with a large fry from Wendy's....heheh Sorry, my granddaddy lived to be 90, eating greasy Southern food, smoking a pipe, and being a solid 30 lbs overweight since the Korean War....and as Hank Jr. said, I'm not about to break "a family tradition!!!".

BTW, Larry, whatever happened to Christian conservative support of temperance and opposition to alcohol? My grandma (the other guy's wife) was evangelical CoC and wouldn't allow even light beer in her house.

    Posted by Mask at 06/23/2009 @ 10:57am

  16. Michael Pollan's book "In Defense of Food" encourages us to "Eat food, not too much, mainly plants." There's no liberal-eco-politically-correct agenda in this. It's common sense. There is nothing unhealthy about questioning the fundamentally flawed food systems in the U.S. today. After all, we have become an obese, unhealthy nation in the last generation, in large part, because of the manufactured/industrialized food industry. One can hardly step into a grocery store without facing the tasteless, over-produced-out-of-season vegetables, the grain fed meats and chemically saturated processed foods. This isn't a debate about liberals and conservatives. It's a discussion about the sustainability and viability of our food. It's also about the aesthetics of being a thinking human being who appreciates the things he/she eats rather than existing as a "profit center" for large corporate interests.

That is a result of the Puritans and not really biblical.

What the Bible says is that Christians should not get drunk and Paul writes that one of the qualifications for a Pastor is that they not be "addicted" to alcohol. It never said do not drink. that would make Jesus a hypocrite.

Some temperance supporters try the "Jesus drank grape juice" route, but it doesn't line up. He was accused of hanging with drunkards at one point. The wedding of Cana, He turned the water into a vintage wine.

But I also caution Christians that our liberty is not a license to do as we please or to cause others to stumble. I would not drink in front of another who had struggled with alcohol if it might cause them to stumble again. but in another instance, we have friends where he was someone who really had a drinking problem, but isn't tempted by his wife having wine at home or with us or others.

If G-d says He gave us wine, it is good. But like any good thing it can be abused.

That "grape juice" thing was my grandma's church too....apparently the Lord and Welch's were on a first name basis...heheh

Just curious, for all the reasons you cited, how a temperance movement could find justification in the Bible for their support for Prohibition, when the exact opposite seems indicated.

Hmmm...wonder if maybe that could be applied to OTHER things????

There have been many things done in the name of Christianity that could not be supported by what the Bible says. That is always the case when power and the corruption of the human mind transcends the truths contained in the Bible.

Slavery, the Inquisition, and the Temperance Movement are good examples of that.

I think you have seen ample evidence by now that I don't subscribe to many of the bad teachings that I see in parts of the Evangelical movement. My stand on Christians and govt, marijuana, alcohol, mega churches, abortion and govt, to name a few are definitely not like what is normally seen in the media. Yet my views are very much inline with the Bible and where the focus of Christian is to be and what our liberties and limits should be.

What complete nonsense. The bible tells men to be a servant to their wives.

Again you have provided an example where people have done something in the name of Christianity that the bible does not say.

    Ephesians 5:25

<Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her>

  25. The ubiquity of corn in US food & drink is particularly striking when you live abroad, as I do mainly, and return on visits. Even a drink in a bar tastes of corn thanks to corn syrup in most mixers.

Americans get screwed in so many ways, it's quite amazing to observe the belief in No.1 when there's so little to bolster that belief & hasn't been for at least 30 years.

We are all waiting for you to tell us how to make a salad using your collection of Chia Pets.

I would say that 'those on the left' are probably more likely to be organic and eat organic than 'those on the right'. Monsanto and genetically modified foods have long been a point of argumentation between the factions, as well. I'm glad that some right wingers like to eat well, but as far as 'leftists' being less likely to garden or to eat right is just a weird and unsubstantiated 'wish list' vilification.

And the bible does NOT say that Jesus created a 'vintage wine'. Larry, of course, has a special translation.

There we go, good evidence again to illustrate that liberal advocacy for gay marriage isn't really about marriage at all, it is just an effort to diminish the importance of marriage and the family unit to society, thus weakening society. This clears the path for state centric collectivism.

You see, Darla has obvious contempt for marriage (the slavery of women by men). Why would she then support gay marriage as a civil right?
