Power Shift 09

posted by Peter Rothberg on 02/13/2009 @ 11:58am

As the battle to pass the stimulus bill demonstrates, real change will not come easily. And it won't come at all without popular pressure pushing the White House and Congress on numerous fronts.

There are currently countless efforts among progressive groups to harness the energy of young people engaged by politics during the last election. At StudentNation, Kristina Rizga has been spearheading a new series of activist profiles looking at different issues young activists are taking on. Few issues have engaged young people more than saving the planet and few green organizations have been more successful at engaging young people than the Energy Action Coalition, the group behind the PowerShift conferences.

In two weeks Power Shift '09 will bring more than 10,000 youth leaders to Washington DC to get inspired, trained, networked and to lobby their members of Congress.

Go here if you want to register for the conference. There'll be a raft of panels, workshops and seminars and speakers like Van Jones, Rocky Anderson, James Hansen, Majora Carter and Jerome Ringo, among many others.

One of the best things about the Energy Action Coalition is the depth and breadth of its outreach, making it one of America's most diverse environmental coalitions and one as sensitive to issues of class as it is to more traditional ecological concerns.

Some of the young activists in attendance will include:

*A busload of Indigenous youth from the US and Canada who have been active in sustainability initiatives on tribal campuses and in their communities.

*A group of 50 Washington-area public and private high school students who have been lobbying to get the Board of Education to commit to making Montgomery Co Public Schools energy self-sufficient by 2050.

*A group of sixty students from Kentucky who are lobbying for a statewide moratorium on mountaintop coal removal, passing sustainability measures on their campuses, and creating innovative clean energy corps program models.

*Groups of students from fifteen of the country's leading Historically Black Colleges and Universities are coming to Power Shift '09.

*A sorority in Texas which rescheduled its initiation because it conflicted with Power Shift 09.

If you're not going to attend PowerShift but want to help, the EAC has some suggestions.

1. Recruit: Are there young people in your life (or part of your organization) that could be inspired by this event? Please spread the word far and wide.

2. Leverage: On March 2nd, roughly 7,000 youth leaders are expected to go up to Capitol Hill to lobby their members of Congress, in what would be by far the largest lobby day on climate/energy issues in US history. Is there anything you or your organization can do to back them up throughout that week? Can you generate calls or letters to Congress? Write a letter to the editor or a blog post?

3. Sponsor: The EAC is trying to raise $150,000 in scholarship funding to make sure Power Shift is as diverse as possible and that talented young people can attend regardless of financial constraints. Pitch in if you can.

  6. While it is always good to see young people get involved, it's shame their energy (lol) is wasted on this effort.

Why don't they get involved with starting businesses or joining with existing businesses to further their goals?

That is the best and most productive impact they could have.

Because they use the Ol' Jesse model of protests and acheiving goals...bus loads of people driving around, protesting or holding meetings for months ....and one is left wondering..don't these people have jobs or something important to do...who pays for the bus tours..who is sponsoring these grass roots initiatives...

The answer is these people are not interested starting a business or even learning what it takes to run one...they are interested in getting money from existing business or shut them down to save the planet.....holding seminars on how to extort money from on going business in order to support their causes and goals(see Ol' Jesse yet again)..they are learning how to lobby..GREAT, more lobbyists..future K street residents..

If you want to see young people at their best..go to a young entrepneur group and be amazed at the drive, initatives and great ideas for future business and economic growths... and forget those who spend their days at seminars on how to extract money from the future entrepeneur groups...

  10. There is nothing more energizing than working with a group of young people to organize, spread the word, motivate, and proceed to action. They BELEIVE in what they are doing and saying, and, if they succeed, they come away with the understanding that life ISN'T all about using all of your time and energy to suck whatever you can out of the world for your own selfish gain...that when it comes to actually doing something to make the world a better place...

So your point (wrapped in jibberish as it is) pretty much to boils down to 'greed is good', right John?

Do you really think that, if we want to make the world a **better** place, we just need to get our young people to focus all of their time and energy on being more...

It s jibberish if you have a short view...

    Most libs..and especially your types...

    ALWAYS..and I mean ALWAYS..confuse greed with drive....

Greed to you is when I work hard to better myself and in the process earn more than $10 an hour....should I earn a ton of money for my efforts...greed to you is when I want to keep more than 50% of what I earn and using it for the betterment of my family and as I see fit...

Greed to me is when YOU and your "govt is great types who know better" want to take the fruits of my labors and give it to someone or someplace else.

I find you GREEDY and not very far from a theif.

The young people would do better for their fellow Americans by learning how to create jobs for the person next to them, rather than destroy the incentive of the man next to them who IS creating jobs with his efforts..

The young should avoid some idiot beaurocrat, say ALGORE TYPES or professor egg head, who decided he has a great idea to make everything fair if only he had some money...now where do I get it....

That to me is GREEDY, also.

John, to the surprise of absolutely no one, you couldn't actually discuss the point I made, which was about altruism and the benefits to **everybody** of young people discovering there are rewards in life that have nothing whatsoever to do with your personal bank account.

No John, instead, you channel your cohort SJerk and not only pretend you know what I think - you try to **define** what I think - and then present an arguement against your own, made-up, BS definition of what I think.

I understand perfectly the difference between drive and greed, as does every 'lib' I know. That's why I laughed out loud when I read your pathetic attempt to present that stunningly lame pretense about kids being motivated to "create jobs for your fellow Americans"...as if we have EVER been awash in businesses created and led by people who's sole purpose was to create jobs for their fellow Americans...

...instead of in the midst of an ecomomic meltdown, brought to the brink by those who, at every turn and juncture, were driven by their own greed and lust for more, to grab everything of value for their own enrichment.

    Posted by Lillian at 02/13/2009 @ 4:54pm

  21. LIL,

That sound you heard was the point rushing past you like a train...

the Altruism is in the ability to help your neighbor get and hold a job so he can take care of his loved ones...regaqrdless of bank account of the guy who created a job..

no one even mentioned bank account in the altruistic thread of yours...

You brought up greed and defined it as something that all who work harder and drive for better lives and end up with money are indeed greedy and that is all oit takes to get there.

I have a differnt view as to what will help the economy or the individual in a tight spot, and I define that as letting him keep more of his own money..this not greed.

    nice try, but don't worry...

the repubs lost, are out of the way,and your guy can now run the show...you should not be surprised the repubs backed away from something they do not believe in, (character in my opinon)..

and enjoy what you should now see as an open road to success for the "stimulus" proram.

Watch the results of your faith unfold for all to see.

Enjoy...and spare me the sanctimonious crap about altruism from yet another lib loon who believes she has seen God and he ow lives in Washington as long as he is not conservative

"This legislation will modernize our financial services laws to better enable American companies to compete in the new economy," Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers said in a letter Wednesday to House and Senate leaders of both parties. "The bill will stimulate competition, thereby increasing choice and reducing costs for consumers, communities and businesses," . Americans spend more than $350 billion a year on fees and commissions for banking, brokerage and insurance services, Summers said. He suggested that if enhanced industry competition brought consumers savings of even 5 percent, they would save more than $18 billion annually. Several securities company stocks were trading higher Thursday ahead of the vote.

Larry Summers, now where have we heard that name recently? Wasn't this a congressional bill signed by PRES. BILLY BOY CLINTON who did no wrong and gave us this great economy?

  35. Global Warming Propaganda Worse Than Predicted, Analysts Say

Today's alarmist headline from Reuters: "Global warming seen worse than predicted". Here is the story behind the headline:

The climate is heating up far faster than scientists had predicted, spurred by sharp increases in greenhouse gas emissions from developing countries like China and India, a top climate scientist said on Saturday.

But wait! The earth has cooled since 1998, so the statement that it is "heating up faster" is plainly false. What's going on here?

Field said "the actual trajectory of climate change is more serious" than any of the climate predictions in the IPCC's fourth assessment report called "Climate Change 2007."

Huh? Those (notoriously unreliable) climate predictions were made just over a year ago. And how can the "actual trajectory" be "more serious," since 2008 was cooler than 2007? This is the solution to the mystery:

"We now have data showing that from 2000 to 2007, greenhouse gas emissions increased far more rapidly than we expected, primarily because developing countries, like China and India, saw a huge surge in electric power generation, almost all of it based on coal," Field said.

There you have it! There is even more CO2 being emitted than had been predicted, even as the earth cools! So a better headline would have been, "Global warming theory disproved by empirical observation." Don't hold your breath waiting for that one, though.

California Weather Exposes Fiction of Global Warming Saturday, February 14, 2009 6:04 PM By: Lowell Ponte

The Golden State could become a desert wasteland, with no more winter salad greens from its parched Central Valley or wines from its withered Napa-Sonoma vineyards, before this century ends unless America takes drastic steps to slow global warming, warned U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu.

"We're looking at a scenario where there's no more agriculture in California," Chu told The Los Angeles Times, adding, "I don't actually see how they can keep their cities going."

Cities such as Los Angeles and San Diego could become sandstorm-blasted ghost towns, Chu seemed to be saying.

January had been unusually dry, the start of a third dry year in a row for California. But soon after Chu's interview, rain began falling. Rainstorm after rainstorm – an average of one every two days – rolled across and drenched much of the state. By Feb. 10, water-short San Diego had surged to 2 inches above its normal-to-date rainfall, and southland mountain ski lodges opened quickly.

This rain pattern continues, with huge storms expected to thicken the Northern Sierra snowpack that supplies much of California's water when it melts. The snowpack was only 61 percent of its usual thickness when Chu voiced concern about a drought.

The Chu Effect "It's the Gore Effect," says a laughing James Taylor, editor of the Heartland Institute think tank journal Environment & Climate News. "Almost every time global warming doomsayer Al Gore speaks or his movie is shown, unusual cold or blizzards happen. And now we have the Chu Effect. He warns of global warming-caused drought in California, and the heavens reply with almost nonstop rains.

"It's amazing how many big-mouth global warming alarmists get media attention who were never trained as climatologists," says Patrick Michaels, a research professor of environmental sciences at the University of Virginia.

Chu is the latest example. He is a brilliant physicist who shared a 1997 Nobel Prize for his research into how to manipulate atoms with lasers. He has been director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a professor of physics and molecular and cellular biology at the University of California Berkeley. But like most global warming doomsayers, Chu has no degree in atmospheric sciences, meteorology, or climatology.

Well, remember, Chu says that it's not 'Global Warming' that's the problem, it's 'Climate Change'. And since the weather's changing all the time, there's plenty to worry about. And of course, a huge need for more government programs, taxes, and research funding to find out why the weather keeps changing! It's a crisis I tell ya! And lookie here! We got a report from the UN that confirms it! What more proof do you need?

  41. I love it when they expose their basic misunderstanding of climate.

    Too much fun.

Tell us how the fringe creation care folks are being indoctrinated by the atheist leftists. I would love to read the take on why that is happening.

Next Ponti will tell us how Obama has not changed a single Bush policy, exhibiting his knowledge of govt.

  42. Here is a basic primer for you two peas in a pod:

    Weather is different than climate

  43. So, the question is, if God gave you the Earth, why don't you want to take care of it?

Ponti, are one of the "Earth is 6000 year old" club?

If not, how old is the Earth? If you think it is billions of years old, how did you determine that? Science or ideology? If you came to that conclusion through science, why are those same scientist so clueless about climate change?

If it is only 6000 years old, then God made it, why not care for it? The worst that could happen is we save energy for following generations. Why would you oppose that?

    "Weather is different than climate"

So CRABBIE, apparently you've got a Climatology degree we've never known about. According to your latest dispatch from propaganda central, do we need to worry about 'Global Warming' or 'Climate Change'? And what ever happened to Global Warming, anyway? Is the Earth no longer warming? Or is the climate just changing? What's the difference? Hasn't the climate always changed? Please, I've not been fully indoctrinated into the dogma, help me out here.

  46. The one thing CERTAIN about weather is...we are gonna have some; our favorite saying here between the icestorms and tornados both in february as we had!

The fools that are the so-called leftist scientist are scratching around for a new theory trying to explain why the climate is COOLING off now and finding few straws to grasp at! They still haven't figured out how to blame the 30's warming and the 1500's glacial melts on automobiles and other carbon producers!

I'm well aware of the group. They consist almost entirely of liberal evangelicals. there are no prominent conservative evangelicals as signatories

Also, I have repeatedly said that I'm all for good stewardship and the development of green technology. But not because of climate change.

Our climate has been in continuous climate change cycles since it was created and they will continue whether mankind is here or not.

mankind has been seeking progress throughout it's history and there is no reason to stop that now.

What we don't need though are govt mandates and coercion, greater taxation or any other means of govt manipulation of our progress.

That is the surest recipe against progress and freedom.

How about the earth is older than 6000 years old and God made it. Just a thought. Aside from that, I see your point. I don't understand why some self-professed Christians(those that I see on tv) have no problems fighting for the life of fetuses but don't extend that fight to their environment. Some of them also have no problem with the death penalty, either. Oh well, whatever works for them.

First we take care of people's needs, then we take care of the planet. And no, the peoples' needs are not satisfied by treating them like slaves. I have a little different perspective than Nancy Pelosi.

    Posted by pontificus at 02/17/2009 @ 10:27pm

  53. You people do like to moan don't you?

"And no, the peoples' needs are not satisfied by treating them like slaves."

    American's and slavery.

You need to realise that the economic policies that Simian George pursued landed the world in the mess it's in. You will now have a period of contrition where you have to pretend that you know what your talking about and try something other than your failed "market led solutions" to solve peoples problems.

Greed has undone you once more and republican leaders were at the help so shut up whineing and accept that you're not going to get your way for the next few years. Thank f*** for that.

  54. comancheamerican,

Up above, you debunked the lib theories of a "parched Central Valley" in California.

I can tell you from personal experience, that Northern California is not "sunny California" in the winter.

    It rains, a lot!

The Russian River (north of San Francisco) floods a lot.

And, on top of this, libs would be surprised to learn that the city in the United States that is the second most susceptible to catastrophic flooding like they had in New Orleans, is SACRAMENTO.

If all the weather conditions broke wrong, tons of rain in the Central Valley, big snow pack in the Sierra, disrepair of levees in Sacramento and people living in flood prone areas, then Sacramento could be the next New Orleans.

Don't believe me, libs? (I am sure you don't). Then check the Bee website (www.sacbee.com) and search the archives for this topic, it has been there in the last few years.

The Bee is a lib-bias newspaper, so there is no reason for you libs to disbelieve the Bee, even if you don't believe me.

  55. I'm passionate that the best way to bring the changes we need in the economy and the environment is by creating local jobs to improve our infrastructure to lessen the impact on the environment. I feel really inspired after reading Thinking Big, especially the essay called An Inclusive Green Economy by Van Jones and Jason Walsh. They took the idea of green collar jobs farther and suggest a Clean Energy Corps be created that is a combined service, training, and job creation effort, concentrated in cities and struggling suburban and rural communities. Basically the idea is that price and the market are too slow to base the shift to a green economy on, which I totally agree with, and we should have a governing body put into place that coordinates green collar efforts to maximize efficiency and opportunity creation for Americans.
