Green Jobs Now

posted by Peter Rothberg on 09/17/2008 @ 5:40pm

You've probably heard of green-collar jobs. But what exactly are they? And what's the green economy being heralded by so many as the best route to a future of human prosperity absent ecological armageddon? This video produced by the Applied Research Center for Green For All -- a national organization dedicated to building an inclusive green economy -- offers some tantalizing answers.

On September 27, the day after the first presidential debate, tens of thousands of people nationwide are joining together for a national day of action to let the candidates, and the country, know that they're ready for the green economy now. Organized by Green for All, 1 Sky and the We Campaign, this day of action currently includes 353 events in 45 of the states of the union and the list is growing. The events run the gamut -- from block parties, house parties, teach-ins, living room discussions, service and work projects, public programs with food, music, poetry......and much more.

Check out this Google map to find an event near you. Can't find one? Then, organize something yourself. Not sure how to do it? Check out this quick-and-dirty guide to hosting a Green Jobs Now event in your community and watch this useful video.

If you can't make it to an event in your area, you can still sign the "I'm Ready" petition and spread the word about Green Jobs Now to your friends via phone calls, emails, Facebook, and, even in this mediated age, in person.

  1. hey peter - this wall street stuff is getting skeery and eery...

    anybody jumping yet?

  3. Why, we don't need "new Green Jobs" ...

Senator McCain says the "fundamentals of the economy are good"....

    then again...

he also says "the economy is in crises"....

of course he also said we'd all get high-paying jobs drilling, drilling, drilling....

of course if we don't do what "Vice-President Palin" wants....we'll get fired!

  4. Nothing wrong with seeing green technology development as long as we keep the Fed out of the picture.

I'm looking next year to add a wind generator in addition to my current solar assisted hot water heater.

  5. So I guess only Fed support in only for "important stuff" like oil and insurance companies?

Wouldn't want to subsidize a sane future after all ... that's "later's" problem.

This very mindset is WHY we need change. To get our heads out of the sand

Now if you could only interest someone to place a toxic waste dump on your property, you could recoup your investment.

You can go as low as a reliable kit for about $1200 up to about $36k plus installation. Plus here in CA where I know you are also, there are a number of rebate programs that can be used together to greatly reduce the cost.

Start with the American Wind Energy Association

I am looking at either the Skystream 3.7 which is one of the most reasonably priced at around $8000 installed and is considered one of the quietest home units.

Blue Wind makes the best kits for DIY. You can build your own for about $1200 plus the tower and installation tie in to your grid..

Try also www.freetreecity.com who is making a roof top unit at around $3k

The Windmax Hybrid is another unit I am looking at because it also has 2 solar panels. I would need 2-3 of these for my home needs.

I'll have to check these out to see how much power they output. Thanks for the websites.
