Counterproductive mistake

The existence of nuclear weapons has provided the longest period in all of history in which no major wars have happened. Nor, under the current international balance, is there likely to be any. Removing the protective lid is unlikely to improve matters. Banning nukes also increases the payoff for a nation or other group building or retaining them in secret. When I was in college, I took a course on this exact point, and these highly calculated facts have not changed since then, forty-tw0 years ago.
