AFTERNOON UPDATES

The great Daniel Schorr has died at 93.  Worked at NPR right up to July 10.  Rare media guy who got MORE hard-hitting as aged. Once had lunch with him and had a blast.

Good luck with that: Obama needs 8 Senate Republicans in order to pass his new arms control treaty with Russia.

Felix Salmon:  Why Obama, in the end, will nominate Elizabeth Warren.

Van Jones at Netroots Nation: Hey, lay off Obama a little bit.

Fun:  what Henry Rollins has to say about Breitbart, Vilsack and Sherrod.

See my new interview with Valerie Plame Wilson.

Because of a Senate 46-51 vote, House Dems have to give billions of aid meant for schools and students to war funding, foreign aid, medical care for Vietnam War veterans and the troop surge in Afghanistan.

THE LIFE OF FRIDAY

Good Morning America reports today that Obama has told its correspondent re: the Sherrod affair that they “jumped the gun, partly because we now live in this media culture where something goes up on YouTube or a blog and everybody scrambles. … I've told my team and I told my agencies that we have to make sure that we're focusing on doing the right thing instead of what looks to be politically necessary at that very moment. We have to take our time and, and think these issues through. … If there's a lesson to be drawn from this episode, it's that rather than us jumping to conclusions and pointing fingers at each other, we should all look inward and try to examine what's in our own hearts.”

So even  "An Inconvenient Truth" did not get us a climate bill this week and here's a take on the Democrats'  surrender, especially by  the centrists.  Kate Sheppard  on Democracy Now agrees.   So can new film  "Countdown to Zero" -- without Al Gore --  doom nukes?

Unlikely Dem candidate for U.S. Senate in S.Carolina, the legendary Alvin Greene, is subject of his first, hip-hop campaign ad--or so says NYT.  Does it pass the smell test? We're pretty sure it's not created by him. Even so, still fun:

Palin and others upset about possible mosque despoiling Ground Zero in NYC. What about the strip club two blocks away? ....  And did Palin just admit she's not tough enough to be president?

Day One impressions from NetRoots Nation in Las Vegas from FireDogLake. TPM has live coverage.

SECRET NOT  TOPS?  Tim Shorrock, who did earlier probes in this area, critiques the Wash Post  "Top Secret America" series.

D.C. COMICS?   Politico editors complain that Media Matters is "staffed like a mid-sized newsroom" and so is able to catch many errors and bias.   Now, why would they be complaining? Read whole article for self-revealing take on Web news focus today.....  Ezra Klein slams Tucker Carlson on his egregious JournoList coverage--and Tucker's attempt to join the List.....  Howie Kurtz declares: Sorry, consevatives, JournoList was not a vast leftwing "conspiracy" ...  CJR takes apart Wash Post's ombudsman's awful New Black Panther Party column.

THE BUSH IS BACK   Krugman: GOP now attempting to "rehabilitate" Bush -- on war, on economy, all of it.

RANGELING  WITH  RUSSERT   Luke not his friend: Rep. Rangel, in deep trouble in Congress, takes off after NBC's Luke Russert.

ANITWAR (KOREA) BOOK Respected historian Bruce Cumings with new book exploding Korean War myths, how that shapes North Korea today,  U.S. "genoicde,"  napalming, and carpetbombing in that war -- and a dig at David Halberstam.

GOING FOR THE GOLD  Rep. Anthony Weiner hits prime Beck sponsor, Goldline, over 17 formal complains in recent years... Remember U.S. attorneys scandal? Harper's Scott Horton on "Another Audacious Whitewash at DOJ."

AND JAMES BOND MAKES IT BIG  Mad Men spoiler: Some group named The Beatles make it big. LBJ swamps Goldwater. Dylan goes electric...  Meanwhile, creator Matthew Weiner invites you into his office.

SEEDY STUFF  Polar bears eating watermelons. Nuff said.

TODAY'S LAFF

Sarah Palin's geography lesson.
