Tuesday marked the start of my daily focus on the 2012 campaign, covering the latest news and controversies across a wide range of races and issues that progressives care about. As the author of three books about influential political campaigns, I also bring a certain historical perspective to this very topical task. 3:45 AFTERNOON DELIGHTS Men in masks attempted to break into the Pennsylvania home of Democratic Rep. Robert Brady, congressional spokeswoman says....Daily Caller recently ran piece hailing baseball star Bryce Harper for not answering question from "idiot" reporter.... Even Fox--well, Shep Smith and Chris Wallace--hitting "reporter" who heckled Obama today. Wallace claims Tucker Carlson "knows better"--which is a reach.
2:30 CRANK CALLER If you have somehow missed creep from, where else, the Daily Caller, interrupt Obama multiple times within one minute during a Rose Garden speech on his anti-deportation move today. (Alternate headline: "Obama Gets Prick in Rose Garden.") Get used to it during campaign, even if Breitbart gone. And to make it official, the Daily Caller feed tweets: "We are very proud of,
@NeilMunroDC for doing his job." Munro now claims he simply "mistimed" questions for Obama, thinking he was finished talking--clearly false based on video. And he "mistimed" the three followups.
12:35 McCAIN HITS ADELSON Quote of the Day from Sen. John McCain, who says Sheldon Adelson "is indirectly injecting millions of dollar in Chinese foreign money into Mitt Romney's presidential election effort....Much of Mr. Adelson's casino profits that go to him come from his casino in Macau, which says that obviously, maybe in a roundabout way foreign money is coming into an American political campaign... That is a great deal of money, and we need a level playing field and we need to go back to the realization... that we have to have a limit on the flow of money and corporations are not people."
12:15 STUCK INSIDE A MOBILE (WITH THE MITTENS BLUES AGAIN) MoveOn promoting new "RomneyMobile" (an Escalade, "for you, Ann") that will travel country stalking Mitt.
11:45 TENSE AVENUE FRIESS OUT Foster Friess, the gaffetastic former Santorum backer (watch this aspirin-between-the-knees bit if you need a refresher), told BuzzFeed he's going to donate to Romney's Super PAC by way of 501(c)4 organization so it's "not so high profile....If you give to a c4, it doesn't get disclosed," Friess said. "So if I give money to various organizations, nobody knows what I'm giving. Even my wife won't know." (h/t Zoë Schlanger)
11:05 EMAIL JUST NOW FROM THE PREZ These "personal" notes are getting more and more funny: "I'm about to sit down for lunch with a few grassroots supporters who are being flown in from Arizona, Maryland, Michigan, and Ohio. It'll just be me and these four supporters, with enough time to relax and have a real conversation. I can't wait. I'm not going to get to do too many more of these before November. That's just a fact.
"So if you'd like to be there for one of the last ones, please chip in $3 or whatever you can—and you'll be automatically entered for that chance."
10:15 DREAM COMES TRUE Big news: Obama will push through by executive order a halt to deporting young immigrants, giving them work permits instead. It may apply to 800,000 or more. Certain to help Obama with Latinos. TPM's Polltracker already shows Obama leading among them by 29%. What will Romney and the GOP make of it? @DavidFrum has already tweeted seven objections, including alleged "exacerbation" of political "tensions."
But @ChuckTodd tweets: "Romney going to regret not backing the Rubio 'Dream Act' now? Imagine where the politics would be on immigration if more GOPers had." And @GlennGreenwald adds: "Like the same-sex marriage announcement, the DREAM Act EO demonstrates the value of applying political pressure."
10:10 ACCIDENTALLY, LIKE A MARTYR Paul Krugman today notes Romney's "accidental" truth-telling: "So the former governor of Massachusetts was telling the truth the first time: by opposing aid to beleaguered state and local governments, he is, in effect, calling for more layoffs of teachers, policemen and firemen. Actually, it’s kind of ironic. While Republicans love to engage in Europe-bashing, they’re actually the ones who want us to emulate European-style austerity and experience a European-style depression."
DEAD, WRONG Florida Gov. Rick Scott, now trying to purge voters, could not vote six years ago because officials thought he was dead.
FLUKE OCCURENCE Sandra Fluke, the former law student termed "a slut" by Rush Limbaugh, has endorsed a man who supported her, President Obama. One reason: “On fair pay for women, Romney says he won’t do anything to make the situation worse; this is little comfort when he then says he won’t do anything to make it better.”
GRIN AND COLBERT IT Stephen last night on PACs, separate cable cables for candidates, whiter-than-white Tide nominee for GOP, and more:
BIG CASINO Eric Boehlert of Media Matters last night: "Amazing: Adelson now on record saying he'll spend $100M to defeat Obama. Nobody in the press is asking what he's demanding in return. Guaranteed: if George Soros committed to spending $100M on this campaign the GOP and Fox would be calling for Congressional hearings."....The New Yorker looks at Adelson here.
TEXAS THROWDOWN Giant fight for Senate nomination in GOP between RIck Perry successor and a Tea Party favorite. Enjoy it here. Still, prospects for Dem pickup very weak.
OBAMA CARRIES NEW YORK ABC reports from inside the famous Sarah Jessica Parker fundraiser for Obama in NY's West Village last night. Fifty big shots paid $40,000 apiece to dine with Barack and Michelle. Lifting a fork: Anna Wintour, Meryl Streep (who pretty much played Wintour as the devil in "The Devil Wears Prada," ouch), Andy Cohen, Olivia Wilde, Michael Kors. "As Obama spoke, holding a microphone in the small space, Parker’s 9-year-old son — sporting a short sleeve dress shirt and tie — looked on from a few feet away. When the president mentioned that U.S. automaker GM is 'back on top,' the child started clapping, impromptu."
"MAC" ROMNEY Andy Borowitz: "BREAKING...New, Improved Mitt Romney Has Retina Display." But no flash drive, for sure....
DIMON BUYERS Jon Stewart roasts Senators and Congrssman for their pathetic cozying up to "huge" JPMorgan chief Jamie Dimon—maybe because he is a big backer of their campaigns for re-election.
PUTTING ON YOUR SHORTS The cost of running for Congress—by the hour.... Former Romney adviser: Yes, GOPers rooting against the economy....Josh Marshall of TPM: "Most interesting fact of 2012 cycle so far is that Virginia is now more reliably blue than Ohio or Florida"....TPM has new Polltracker site....Nate Silver of NYT asks readers for help in projecting prez race, they come up with pretty much same numbers that he does... Ice T: America elected Obama because of—rap music...
From late Thursday
THE BALLAD OF MITT Just came across this incredible (because it's not a parody) song tribute to Romney—from 2008 but still hitting all the notes for today. He even "turned water into wine." Or maybe he meant "whine." Incredibly: There's even a slowed-down version for maximum "goosebump" potential. (h/t Zoe Schlanger)
POST-SPEECH REACTIONS The official @BarackObama feed tweets: "Turning back Citizens United loophole and restoring democracy must be priority for 2nd term.".... MSNBC's Jon Alter called speech "one of least successful" from Obama he's ever heard but Andrew Sullivan claimed he hit a "home run." So it goes. ....MoveOn pressing Romney to take clear stand on Florida vote purge....Who knew? The Daily Show has a separate "Election Center." New Obama-related music feature today.
WHATEVER Think Progress: GOP at its Latino outreach site uses stock photo of Asian kids at the top of the page. Update: They've now removed it.
HAMMER HITS EXECUTIONS MC Hammer (left) backing one of my pet issues: supporting California's ballot initiative to replace the death penalty with life without parole. He writes about it at Huffington Post.
LOOK OUT, CLEVELAND Obama starts allegedly "big" speech in Ohio. Chris Cillizza of Wash Post tweets: "Obama missed a chance not to start his speech with 'Hello, Cleveland.' Spinal Tap references = winning." Watch live here. Follow my live-tweet commentary @gregmitch. Next to address voters in Ohio: The Bush head from "Game of Thrones." Read about Romney bus folks taunting Obama fans outside arena.
COURTING DISASTER Major new piece by former Sen. Russ Feingold at Stanford Law Review site on how Citizens United decision pretty much wrecked everything. "Without a significant change in how our campaign finance system regulates the influence of corporations, the American election process, and even the Supreme Court itself, face a more durable, long-term crisis of legitimacy."
