  • A good article! While I do not remember much about pre-war America, my father drove a 1937 Hudson Terraplane until about 1949, because you couldn't buy a new car during the war.

    Looking to the future, I believe we may see a deep split in the Democratic Party, because of the issues raised in this article and civil rights issues related to military commissions for trying detainees. I think we may need a new political party dedicated to the welfare of ordinary working Americans and the traditional values of the Democratic Party. I would like to see it centered around the union movement, because they are more in touch with ordinary Americans. I propose calling it the American Union Party. The union part would recognize the work of unions, but also recall how our country was saved under the "Union " banner during the Civil War. We certainly need saving now!
