  • Thanks so much for reporting this. Ever since seeing Paul O'Neil blubbering in the clubhouse over the 2001 World Series loss while cradling a NYC firefighter's hat (as if to say: we suffered enough), I find the mix of patriotism, big bucks and sports a bit repugnant.

  • My father was a member of the US Army from 1940-1946, going to war in Europe in 1941 at the age of 37. He received two Purple Hearts and a DSC. After VE day, he enlisted for the invasion of Japan. He refused to stand for the national anthem. He said, "A sporting event is not the time for shows of patriotism."

    I would have enjoyed seeing New York's finest trying to arrest him.
