Web Letters: The Problem With Cheap Oil

A headline in todays local paper said,"Despite relatively low gas prices, area public transit use growing." People are being laid off, and you are lucky if you have a job. Working people have no disposable income to waste on gas or long vacation trips in their cars. We are also seeing locally a rise in gas prices, and it has been predicted that they will be $3 a gallon by the summer. I think we may be looking past $3 a gallon by summer. Gas has become a luxury item for the general public. People can't find work, and if they can find a job, it doesn't pay enough for luxuries! The American market is shrinking, because the American and, for that matter, the world's standard of living is shrinking. I would suggest that those countries who depend trade turn to internal development. Russia, India, China and Indonesia have very large populations, and if they would have a booming economies if ordinary people were paid a living wage. They do not need trade! They need internal development and control of their own economies.
