  • While such items as "freedom from hunger" are obviously quite important within the functioning of a society, it makes no sense to try to pretend they can be effectively codified into the legal system. The right to earn goods and services does not imply a right to have someone else pay for them, and when you twist and warp things across that line, you destroy the healthy economic base and impoverish everyone, as happened in the communist nations. Cuba is a great example today.

  • Barbara Crossette is stuck in a time warp. There are many commentators with a much deeper and more nuanced undertanding of these issues. The Nation disserves its readers and the issues by not choosing one of them to write this piece.
