  • Listening to Sarah Palin, like when I listen to John McCain, I am reminded of Jerzy Kosinski's brilliant Being There. And again, fiction has become frightening reality. Chauncey Gardner, a mentally challenged butler, was elected president entirely on the basis of how popular he was on the late-night TV circuit . Hearing Sarah Palin, I now know that Down's Syndrome is congenital--and I know who is carrying the gene in the Palin family.
