  • A large part of the conundrum is that, if we build much-needed development projects, we must then put guards around them for years. It is very tough to find reasonable accommodations with people who have been known to have young girls publicly whipped for trying to learn to read and write. Many of the standard arguments just will not work in this environment.

    My wife's feminism has led her to a hawkish position on Afghanistan.
