    It is important that white America understand the position the church has held in the black community throughout history. As a civil rights leader, there's no doubt that Dr. King's activism was influenced and buoyed by his faith. As a candidate for public office, Mr. Obama's beliefs should be personal only.

    Upon choosing to run for public office, it became incumbent upon Obama to obey our Constitution, whereby no de facto religious test is permitted. As a presidential candidate, Obama has squandered numerous opportunities to remind us that this election is about the crucial looming issues that affect us all--not about a candidate's favorite Bible passage.

    Rick Warren and his ilk would like nothing better than to conflate the flag and the cross. It's a shame that Mr. Obama has not used his bully pulpit (pun intended) to set the record straight.
