  • What I have learned from the HBO series on John Adams, and from John Freling's book on the 1800 election as well as Nancy Isenberg's book on Aaron Burr, is that our founders were no better, no more high-minded, no more heroic than the epigones of today. It was a miracle that men with the flaws of Jefferson, Adams, Hamilton and all the rest could create a republic such as ours.
