  • A good article with interesting analysis! Pushing into Russia's sphere of influence is a very bad idea. We have fairly recently survived one cold war, and we do not need another one. NATO's influence should be restricted to Europe. Similarly, I think it is a bad idea having too many Europeans appearing to be willing to a resume the "white man's burden" in Afghanistan or the Middle East. Washington's idea of temporary alliances in dealing with specific problems is increasingly attractive. It would seem to me a good idea to work with, not only Afghanistan but her neighbors too, including Iran. Except for Al Qaeda and the Taliban, most of our problems can be settled by diplomacy instead of the use of force.
