  • What the House baseball hearings really showed was how shallow the American fascination with sports really is. Not only are sports figures little more than teenagers who have grown fat, the members of Congress largely share the popular delusion about them. Sports is the way males avoid real relationships. Just look at the relationships between Pettitte, Clemens, and the rest: talking about flyballs and strikeouts is a way of avoiding talking about real things. America is in a dream world. Its political leadership is just what we deserve.
