  • Mr. Hayden clearly has not read the books on counterinsurgency that he mentions in the article and displays an obvious ignorance of what is involved in fighting a successful counterinsurgency. The gated communities and new villages that he writes of with an academic's moral derision are what provide the security that the population must have it if is to work against the insurgents. It is the lack of security that has fueled the sectarian violence that has become the single greatest threat to a stable Iraq.
