Web Letters: Alterman's Arrest

I was sorry to hear that well-regarded journalist and writer Eric Alterman would be detained by police at a Democratic post-debate event. Even worse, not a single Democratic operative would vouch for him. With a legitimate press credential, one would believe he would be welcome to such events. It sounds like the Democrats simply did not want one of the top political and media journalists poking around their event.

Why Is Eric making a big deal of his arrest? The point of this article and his description of the event on Huffington Post is that other people/organizations have made a big deal out of this and he's entitled to tell his version of the story. That's all.

It sounds like Mr. Alterman was arrested for failing to obey the lawful order of a policeman. Mr. Alterman might not like it, but the police are empowered by the people (you and me) to make such an arrest. If he doesn't like the law, then he should work to change it. Whining like a crybaby won't change a thing.

On the day a terrorist plot to attack JFK is revealed, Mr. Alterman is asked to leave a party. Even worse, he's "hassled" and "interrupted" by a police officer too stupid or vicious to accord Mr. Alterman the deference he merits. (Officer, do you have any IDEA who you're hassling?)

Shame on you, Eric and Joan, for thinking this silly dust-up should matter to anyone.
