  • In "The Dialogue of Democracy" by Robert Atwan, the first paragraph says that the more politically active a citizen is, the healthier the political system becomes. As a college student, it's within my duty to use my evolving mind to learn about what is going on in our country and in the world. I feel free to state my opinion on things that I think are important to society, which is why I'm writing to you now. I believe the recent ban on partial-birth abortion indicates something larger than who wins. America is founded upon many fundamental beliefs, one of which is the idea of liberty, but the Supreme Court took away some of women's liberty when this ban was ruled.

The reasons I don't agree with this ban is that it is an unjust restriction and violates privacy and personal freedom. Although I'm personally not sure if I would ever decide upon a partial-birth abortion, I strongly believe that a woman should have that choice to make on her own. Part of the concept of liberty, among others, is personal choice. And the Supreme Court, the same court that promotes life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness infringed upon that when they ordered a federal ban on this type of procedure.

This ban is an unjust restriction and infringes upon private decisions and personal freedom. The government promotes life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It also upholds the Roe vs. Wade ruling, but it's telling a woman what she can and can't do when it comes to her pregnancy. It seems as if Uncle Sam is a little confused on the meaning of privacy and personal freedom. This ban is wrong because, among many other things, it confines a woman's liberty.

  • During his confirmation hearings, Chief Justice John Roberts said -- falsely, as it turns out -- that the matter of abortion was "settled law." And, as always, we see yet another Bush crony exposed as a liar. Roberts has ruled in favor of George W. Bush's fascist policies on virtually every case, proving himself nothing more than just another extension of the Bush White House. Samuel Alito, another liar and Bush crony, also sided with his master against the American public.

This is what we can expect as long as the Bush regime and its minions in the federal courts maintain their stranglehold on power.

  • The article was an admirably succinct report and summary of opinions regarding the decision. My only quarrel is that the term "Pro-life" was used to describe the conservative judicial activists on the Supreme Court. We're all "Pro-life", aren't we? The justices who trampled precedent in their rush to judgement are "Anti-choice."
