Katrina vanden Heuvel: Your appearance on The Colbert Report was fantastic. It takes a lot of courage, or balls as Colbert would say, to go on his show with any liberal opinion and try to get a serious point across. Especially with the random assortment of seemingly mocking questions he will throw at his guests. You handled it perfectly. As someone who has seen most if not all of Colbert's shows over the past year and a half I think that was one of the best interviews yet. I loved the last line of yours. Any time Colbert has no great comeback that just means you "nailed" him.

Sorry, but I do not think that an appearance on the Colbert show does anything but make you look rather juvenile. Why do you have to come down to that level? I do not understand how this elevates The Nation of the national debate. Maybe there are a few more people that know about the magazine, but hardly ones that will take the trouble to read it.

Colbert is so good at replicating the Oreally and Limbaughstic inhannity that he needs someone who can fire back with the kind of clarity of thought that Katrina displays.

Now, if your magazine was as open and honest about history as it is about the current political situation, I'd be even more impressed.

The John F. Kennedy assassination, for example. It was the story of the century, and was blown by every media outlet. Will the Nation be the one to finally take a look at the skeletons in the closet? Somehow I doubt it.
