  • There is no question that Bush is grabbing much more power then the founding fathers ever thought the presidency should have but he certainly isn't the first.

    John Adams put people in jail simply for insulting the president. Woodrow Wilson put people in jail for disagreeing with the US entry into the First World War.

    There is also no question that there is something in the nature of some people that makes them wish to have authoritarian power and Bush is most certainly infected with that particular virus.

    This is why we need a strong legislature that is willing to challenge the president and not simply be his lap dog and why we need an independent judiciary.
