  • Mr. Deresiewicz has written a very good, percipient and accurate review of The Echo Maker, which has some excellent writing and good ideas, but does not hang together as a very good novel. I feel that a decent editor would have improved it considerably by reducing it by several hundred pages (an opinion I also have regarding much of DeLillo's work) and eliminating much unnecessary cuteness. Seems novels' value these days has much to do with the weight of the paper they're printed on. As a neuropsychologist I would prefer to read Richard Powers's writing in non-fiction essays.
