  • Water is second only to land in Israel's strategic thinking. It has coveted the waters of the Jordan river, and its longstanding fantasy of controlling Southern Lebanon is, in large part, based on a wish to control the waters of the Litani River.

In the West Bank, stealing Palestinian water, like stealing their land and pauperizing their economy, is meant to make life so miserable for them that they will leave ("voluntary transfer") while making subsidized housing in the settlements more attractive by providing green lawns. None of this is new--only the attention it is beginning to get in a few American journals.
